RESUMEN

First principles based beyond Born-Oppenheimer theory has been implemented on the F + H2 system for constructing multistate global diabatic Potential Energy Surfaces (PESs) through the incorporation of Nonadiabatic Coupling Terms (NACTs) explicitly. The spin-orbit (SO) coupling effect on the collision process of the F + H2 reaction has been included as a perturbation to the non-relativistic electronic Hamiltonian. Adiabatic PESs and NACTs for the lowest three electronic states (12A', 22A', and 12A″) are determined in hyperspherical coordinates as functions of hyperangles for a grid of fixed values of the hyperradius. Jahn-Teller (JT) type conical intersections between the two A' states translate along C2v and linear geometries in F + H2. In addition, A' and A″ states undergo Renner-Teller (RT) interaction at collinear configurations of this system. Both JT and RT couplings are validated by integrating NACTs along properly chosen contours. Subsequently, we have solved adiabatic-to-diabatic transformation (ADT) equations to evaluate the ADT angles for constructing the diabatic potential matrix of F + H2, including the SO coupling terms. The newly calculated diabatic PESs are found to be smooth, single-valued, continuous, and symmetric and can be invoked for performing accurate scattering calculations on the F + H2 system.

OBJECTIVES: To assess the preoperative serum levels of CA 125 with its diagnostic role and to evaluate the p53 expression in patients of primary ovarian neoplasms. We also wished to judge their relationship with other parameters like clinical staging and histopathologic tumor type. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The present study was conducted on 86 patients during the study period of 2.5 years. Preoperative CA 125 levels were evaluated by an automated immunoassay analyzer. p53 expression was judged immunohistochemically with pre-diluted monoclonal antibody. An objective scoring was done depending on distinct nuclear immunopositivity. RESULTS: Median value of preoperative CA 125 levels was 32 U/mL in benign surface epithelial-stromal tumors (BSEST), 53 U/mL in borderline surface epithelial-stromal tumors (BOT), 346 U/mL in malignant surface epithelial-stromal tumors (MSEST) and 560 U/mL in serous adenocarcinomas (SAC). Most of ovarian tumors were in the FIGO stage I (64 cases, 74.4%), but higher stages (II, III, IV) were observed mostly in MSESTs. SACs displayed the maximum p53 expression. Considering the cut-off value of more than 35 U/mL in CA 125 levels, the sensitivity to diagnose MSESTs was 94.7%. Preoperative CA 125 levels strongly and positively correlated with FIGO staging and p53 expression. Similarly p53 expression strongly and positively correlated with FIGO staging and histopathological categories. CONCLUSION: Higher values of preoperative CA 125 levels and higher expression p53 are associated with MSESTs and BOTs especially of serous type. They strongly correlate with each other and with tumor stage. But there is no serum CA 125 concentration that can clearly differentiate benign and malignant ovarian masses.

RESUMEN

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT) is a rare neoplastic lesion with tendency toward local aggressive behavior and recurrence. It is primarily a visceral and soft tissue tumor; however, involvement of pancreas is extremely unusual. A localization in the pancreas needs differentiation from other tumors and chronic pancreatitis. We report a case of inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor arising in pancreatic head in a 32-year-old female who underwent Whipple's procedure.

Hemoglobinopathies are common genetic disorders of haemoglobin. Identification of these disorders is immensely important epidemiologically and they can be prevented by population screening. The present study was carried out to evaluate the spectrum of hemoglobinopathies in the state of West Bengal by the cation-exchange high-performance liquid chromatography (CE-HPLC). A retrospective, single-center, cross-sectional study was conducted on consecutive 10,407 participants. Out of 10,407 subjects, 8,898 (85.5 %) were diagnosed as normal, 579 (5.6 %) were as ß-thalassemia trait (BTT) and 522 (5.0 %) were detected as HbE carrier on HPLC study. Apart from BTT and HbE carrier ten additional variants were encountered. The present study showed that CE-HPLC is a convenient, high-throughput, labour-saving and objective screening tool for early detection and management of hemoglobinopathies.

Coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) with cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) is associated with intense activation of hemostatic mechanisms. But the precise knowledge of the effects of eliminating CPB in patients undergoing off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) are not well established. The present study was carried out to compare and document the changes in selected coagulation and fibrinolysis variables in patients undergoing on-pump and off-pump CABG (OPCAB). A total of 42 patients of on-pump and 31 patients of off-pump CABG were selected for the study. Platelet count, prothrombin time (PT), activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT), thrombin time (TT), Fibrinogen and D-dimer levels were measured immediately, 24 h and 7 days after operation and compared with the baseline preoperative values. Statistical analysis was done by mixed ANOVA for repeated measures and Post-hoc tests using the Bonferroni correction, Chi square and unpaired t test. All the parameters were significantly changed (P < 0.05) with the time. Platelet counts, fibrinogen and D-dimer levels were significantly different between on-pump and off-pump CABG patients on immediate and 24 h postoperative period and attained almost same level after 7 days of operation. Fibrinogen level and platelet counts were increased after a sharp fall in the immediate post-operative period whereas D-dimer levels were persistently increased with a sharp peak of rise in the immediate post-operative period in on-pump group. On-pump surgery was associated with excessive fibrinolytic activity immediately after operation. The off-pump group demonstrated less activation of coagulation and fibrinolysis and delayed postoperative response that became almost equal to the on-pump group in the later postoperative period.

We calculate the adiabatic Potential Energy Surfaces (PESs) and the Non-Adiabatic Coupling Terms (NACTs) for the three lowest singlet states of H3 (+) in hyperspherical coordinates as functions of hyperangles (θ and ϕ) for a grid of fixed values of hyperradius (1.5 ⩽ ρ ⩽ 20 bohrs) using the MRCI level of methodology employing ab initio quantum chemistry package (MOLPRO). The NACT between the ground and the first excited state translates along the seams on the θ - ϕ space, i.e., there are six Conical Intersections (CIs) at each θ (60° ⩽ θ ⩽ 90°) within the domain, 0 ⩽ ϕ ⩽ 2π. While transforming the adiabatic PESs to the diabatic ones, such surfaces show up six crossings along those seams. Our beyond Born-Oppenheimer approach could incorporate the effect of NACTs accurately and construct single-valued, continuous, smooth, and symmetric diabatic PESs. Since the location of CIs and the spatial amplitudes of NACTs are most prominent around ρ = 10 bohrs, generally only those results are depicted.

RESUMEN

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor occurring at intra-abdominal sites in children can be confused with malignancy because of its large size and location. It is a tumor classified as 'intermediate' between benign and malignant, but usually benign, with a strong tendency for recurrence. Treatment is surgical excision. Here, we present a brief outline of three such cases presenting as abdominal mass in infants.

Abnormal abundance of HNC in interstellar spaces has been the motivation of many experimental as well as theoretical studies of the branching ratio [HNC]/[HCN] in the dissociation of HCNH, right after its formation from electron capture by HCNH(+), available in the upper atmosphere. In the present work we were interested in nonadiabatic studies involving the dissociation channel of HCNH leading to the formation of HNC. This study reports for the first time that the conical intersection (CI) between the states 1(2)Σ(+) and 2(2)Σ(+) exists only in some bent geometry (and not in the collinear geometry) where both of these states have A' symmetry. This finding is important as this CI is crucial in the dissociation of HCNH. We further report that these two states strongly couple with 1(2)Π, the lowest electronic state of collinear HCNH. Hence we construct a three-state Hilbert subspace (HSS), comprising of the states 1(2)Π, 1(2)Σ(+), and 2(2)Σ(+), in a configuration space where these states interact very strongly and the adiabatic-to-diabatic transformation angles (mixing angle) yield meaningful values of topological (Berry) phase. This leads to the construction of the corresponding three-state diabatic potentials. We advocate that these diabatic potentials, considering both the linear as well as bent configurations, nicely elucidate the formation of the HNC molecule by the CH bond dissociation of HCNH molecule.

We follow a suggestion by Lipoff and Herschbach [Mol. Phys. 108, 1133 (2010)] and compare dressed and bare adiabatic potentials to get insight regarding the low-energy dynamics (e.g., cold reaction) taking place in molecular systems. In this particular case, we are interested to study the effect of conical intersections (ci) on the interacting atoms. For this purpose, we consider vibrational dressed adiabatic and vibrational dressed diabatic potentials in the entrance channel of reactive systems. According to our study, the most one should expect, in case of F + H(2), is a mild effect of the (1, 2) ci on its reactive/exchange process--an outcome also supported by experiment. This happens although the corresponding dressed and bare potential barriers (and the corresponding van der Waals potential wells) differ significantly from each other.

Demonstration of onset of Jahn-Teller (JT) intersections, characterized by a topological phase of π, on introduction of bending in the collinear tetra-atomic C(2)H(2)(+) cation, originally a Renner-Teller (RT) system, has raised interest in the study of the generality of this phenomenon. This interest has initiated similar study by shifting one external light atom from the collinear molecular axes of systems such as HCNH and HC(2)O. Recent studies have revealed that slightly bent HCNH poses a specialty in this regard and thus demands focused attention. In the present work we performed a combined study using both the potential intersections and the angular nonadiabatic coupling terms (NACTs) and report two new results: (i) The first result is the appearance of the JT conical intersections (ci's) between the two lowest states of a slightly bent HCNH molecule (1(2)A' and 1(2)A", originated from collinear X(2)Π state) only with certain nonplanar configurations, in contrast to its appearance in C(S) configuration space (molecular plane) for slightly bent C(2)H(2)(+), HC(2)O, or some other tetra-atomics. This is also associated with the first time demonstration of Berry phase for such a single isolated ci for HCNH molecule. (ii) For energetically higher potentials of slightly bent HCNH, the present study reveals the existence of the intersection of the state 1(2)A" with the state 2(2)A' (originated from the collinear 1(2)Σ(+) state); in contrast to the (1,2) ci this appears in the molecular plane. The search for ci's has been performed by varying the distances of the two H-atoms (designated as H(C) and H(N)) from the C-N axis as well as the dihedral angle φ between the two planes (H(C),C,N) and (C,N,H(N)). Existence of these JT ci's results in deterioration of a two-state Hilbert subspace (HSS) model in diabatization, while the proper choice of an n (>2)-state HSS circumvents this problem.

We perform ab initio calculation using quantum chemistry package (MOLPRO) on the excited states of Na(3) cluster and present the adiabatic PESs for the electronic states 2(2)E' and 1(2)A(1)', and the non-adiabatic coupling (NAC) terms among those states. Since the ab initio calculated NAC elements for the states 2(2)E' and 1(2)A(1)' demonstrate the numerical validity of so called "Curl Condition," such states closely form a sub-Hilbert space. For this subspace, we employ the NAC terms to solve the "adiabatic-diabatic transformation (ADT)" equations to obtain the functional form of the transformation angles and pave the way to construct the continuous and single valued diabatic potential energy surface matrix by exploiting the existing first principle based theoretical means on beyond Born-Oppenheimer treatment. Nuclear dynamics has been carried out on those diabatic surfaces to reproduce the experimental spectrum for system B of Na(3) cluster and thereby, to explore the numerical validity of the theoretical development on beyond Born-Oppenheimer approach for adiabatic to diabatic transformation.

BACKGROUND: Intraoperative cytology is an important diagnostic modality improving on the accuracy of the frozen sections. It has shown to play an important role especially in the intraoperative diagnosis of central nervous system tumors. AIM: To study the diagnostic accuracy of squash preparation and frozen section (FS) in the intraoperative diagnosis of central nervous system (CNS) tumors. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This prospective study of 114 patients with CNS tumors was conducted over a period of 18 months (September 2004 to February 2006). The cytological preparations were stained by the quick Papanicolaou method. The squash interpretation and FS diagnosis were later compared with the paraffin section diagnosis. RESULTS: Of the 114 patients, cytological diagnosis was offered in 96 cases. Eighteen nonneoplastic or noncontributory cases were excluded. Using hematoxylin and eosin-stained histopathology sections as the gold standard, the diagnostic accuracy of cytology was 88.5% (85/96) and the accuracy on FS diagnosis was 90.6% (87/96). Among these cases, gliomas formed the largest category of tumors (55.2%). The cytological accuracy in this group was 84.9% (45/53) and the comparative FS figure was 86.8% (46/53). In cases where the smear and the FS diagnosis did not match, the latter opinion was offered. CONCLUSIONS: Squash preparation is a reliable, rapid and easy method and can be used as a complement to FS in the intraoperative diagnosis of CNS tumors.

The tetra-atomic C(2)H(2)(+) cation is known to form Renner-Teller-type intersections along its collinear axis. Not too long ago, we studied the nonadiabatic coupling terms (NACTs) of this molecule [G. J. Halász et al., J. Chem. Phys. 126, 154309 (2007)] and revealed two kinds of intersections. (i) By employing one of the hydrogens as a test particle, we revealed the fact that indeed the corresponding (angular) NACTs produce topological (Berry) phases that are equal to 2pi, which is a result anticipated in the case of Renner-Teller intersections. (ii) However, to our big surprise, repeating this study when one of the atoms (in this case a hydrogen) is shifted from the collinear arrangement yields for the corresponding topological phase a value that equals pi (and not 2pi). In other words, shifting (even slightly) one of the atoms from the collinear arrangement causes the intersection to change its character and become a Jahn-Teller intersection. This somewhat unexpected novel result was later further analyzed and confirmed by other groups [e.g., T. Vertesi and R. Englman, J. Phys. B 41, 025102 (2008)]. The present article is devoted to another tetra-atomic molecule, namely, the H(2)CN molecule, which just like the C(2)H(2)(+) ion, is characterized by Renner-Teller intersections along its collinear axis. Indeed, we revealed the existence of Renner-Teller intersections along the collinear axis, but in contrast to the C(2)H(2)(+) case a shift of one atom from the collinear arrangement did not form Jahn-Teller intersections. What we found instead is that the noncollinear molecule was not affected by the shift and kept its Renner-Teller character. Another issue treated in this article is the extension of (the two-state) Berry (topological) phase to situations with numerous strongly interacting states. So far the relevance of the Berry phase was tested for systems characterized by two isolated interacting states, although it is defined for any number of interacting states [M. V. Berry, Proc. R. Soc. London, Ser. A 392, 45 (1984)]. We intend to show how to overcome this limitation and get a valid, fully justified definition of a Berry phase for an isolated system of any number of interacting states (as is expected).

RESUMEN

Producing and controlling nonclassical light states are now the subject of intense experimental efforts. In this paper we consider the interaction of such a light state with a small molecule. Specifically, we develop the theory and apply it numerically to calculate in detail how a short pulse of nonclassical light, such as the high intensity Fock state, induces photodissociation in H(2)(+). We compare the kinetic energy distributions and photodissociation yields with the analogous results of quasi-classical light, namely a coherent state. We find that Fock-state light decreases the overall probability of dissociation for low vibrational states of H(2)(+) as well as the location of peaks and line shapes in the kinetic energy distribution of the nuclei.

RESUMEN

A 24-year-old female presented with swelling in the left breast for one-and-a-half years associated with pain for last 4 months. During this period, she was operated twice and once again there was local recurrence, the biopsy was interpreted as benign vascular lesion. The case was diagnosed by preoperative cytology as angiosarcoma of breast, after which, she underwent modified radical mastectomy. Angiosarcoma of breast is uncommon with extremely bad prognosis. Familiarity with the clinical and pathologic features is critical in avoiding underdiagnosis and delayed treatment.
