RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Time-restricted eating (TRE), without calorie counting, has become a popular weight loss strategy, yet long-term randomized trials evaluating its efficacy are limited. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether TRE is more effective for weight control and cardiometabolic risk reduction compared with calorie restriction (CR) or control. DESIGN: 12-month randomized controlled trial. (ClinicalTrials.gov: NCT04692532). SETTING: University of Illinois Chicago from January 2021 to September 2022. PARTICIPANTS: 90 adults with obesity. INTERVENTION: 8-hour TRE (eating between noon and 8:00 p.m. only, without calorie counting), CR (25% energy restriction daily), or control (eating over a period of 10 or more hours per day). Participants were not blinded. MEASUREMENTS: Change in body weight, metabolic markers, and energy intake by month 12. RESULTS: Seventy-seven persons completed the study. Mean age was 40 years (SD, 11), 33% were Black, and 46% were Hispanic. Mean reduction in energy intake was -425 kcal/d (SD, 531) for TRE and -405 kcal/d (SD, 712) for CR. Compared with the control group, weight loss by month 12 was -4.61 kg (95% CI, -7.37 to -1.85 kg; P ≤ 0.01) (-4.87% [CI, -7.61% to -2.13%]) for the TRE group and -5.42 kg (CI, -9.13 to -1.71 kg; P ≤ 0.01) (-5.30% [CI, -9.06% to -1.54%]) for the CR group, with no statistically significant difference between TRE and CR (0.81 kg [CI, -3.07 to 4.69 kg; P = 0.68]) (0.43% [CI, -3.48% to 4.34%]). LIMITATION: Not blinded, not powered to detect relatively large differences in weight loss, and lack of adjustment for multiple comparisons. CONCLUSION: Time-restricted eating is more effective in producing weight loss when compared with control but not more effective than CR in a racially diverse population. Obesity is associated with low-grade inflammation. Weight loss, by means of dietary restriction, has been shown to reduce systemic inflammation. Intermittent fasting has recently gained popularity as a weight loss diet, but its effects on inflammatory markers in individuals with obesity have yet to be summarized. Accordingly, this review examined how the two main forms of intermittent fasting, i.e., time restricted eating (TRE) and alternate day fasting (ADF), impact body weight and key circulating inflammatory markers (i.e., C-reactive protein (CRP), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha), and interleukin-6 (IL-6)), in adults with obesity. Results from this review reveal that TRE with various eating window durations (4-10 h per day) has no effect on circulating levels of CRP, TNF-alpha or IL-6, with 1-5% weight loss. As for ADF, reductions in CRP concentrations were noted when >6% weight loss was achieved. However, ADF had no effect on TNF-alpha or IL-6 concentrations, with this degree of weight loss. Thus, intermittent fasting has little or no effect on key inflammatory markers, but more research is warranted to confirm these preliminary findings.

Catalytic formation of borylamines from atmospheric N2 is achieved for the first time using a series of homogenous (triphosphine)Mo complexes. Stepwise functionalization of the (triphosphine)Mo-nitrido complex with chloroborane led to the synthesis of the imido complex. Electrochemical characterization of the (PPP)Mo-nitrido and (PPP)Mo-borylimido complexes showed that the latter is much more easily reduced.

RESUMEN

This article reports data on the occurrence and spread of three invasive mosquito species: Aedes japonicus, Aedes koreicus, and Aedes albopictus in two regions of Northeast Italy; resulting from larval and adult collections performed during the 2011-2020 period in the framework of different projects. Routine species identification was performed using morphological characters and complemented by molecular methods when required. For the years 2019 and 2020, detailed data are reported which update previous information on municipalities and sites where these species have been detected. Geo-referenced information on the presence of invasive mosquitoes is reported and demonstrated on maps. Additional data on the nature of breeding sites and the finding of native mosquito species in the same collections are also provided.

In this work, we report the preparation of functional interfaces incorporating heterobimetallic systems consisting in the association of an electroactive carbon-rich ruthenium organometallic unit and a luminescent lanthanide ion (Ln = Eu3+ and Yb3+). The organometallic systems are functionalized with a terminal hexylthiol group for subsequent gold surface modification. The formation of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) with these complex molecular architectures are thoroughly demonstrated by employing a combination of different techniques, including infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy, ellipsometry, contact angle, and cyclic voltammetry measurements. The immobilized heterobimetallic systems show fast electron-transfer kinetics and, hence, are capable of fast electrochemical response. In addition, the characteristic electrochemical signals of the SAMs were found to be sensitive to the presence of lanthanide centers at the bipyridyl terminal units. A positive shift of the potential of the redox signal is readily observed for lanthanide complexes compared to the bare organometallic ligand. This effect is equally observed for preformed complexes and on-surface complexation. Thus, an efficient ligating recruitment of europium and ytterbium cations at gold-modified electrodes is demonstrated, allowing for an easy electrochemical detection of the lanthanide ions along with an alternative preparative method of SAMs incorporating lanthanide cations compared to the immobilization of the preformed complex.

INTRODUCTION: The Nursing Activities Score (NAS) measures the amount of nursing time required for each patient and it has been widely used across Europe since its first validation in 2003. OBJECTIVE: To determine the nursing workload within an Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) Centre using a dedicated scoring tool. METHODS: Retrospective observational study. Data from NAS were collected for seventy-two consecutive months from January 2010. RESULTS: A total amount of 2606 patients were enrolled. Their median NAS recorded at Intensive Care Unit's admission was 69.8 (IQR: 56.2-82.9), whilst the daily average NAS was 68.1 (IQR: 58.3-76.7). ECMO patients enrolled were 95 (4%), with 3141 ECMO days. The median NAS of the ECMO patients versus patients without ECMO support was 87.0 (IQR: 82-96) and 67.2 (IQR: 58-78) respectively (p < 0.0001). The number of daily ECMO treatments showed a slight correlation with the average daily NAS (r = 0.176-p < 0.0001). CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that in ECMO patients a nurse-to-patient ratio equal to 1:1, should be guaranteed in accordance to the national health regulations and organizations. The results of this study reinforce the current recommendation about the implementation of referral ECMO centres, in order to centralise patients, provide a dedicated clinical-technical support and also guarantee an adequate number of ECMO nurses supported by an accurate nurse management.

RESUMEN

Two carbon-rich ruthenium complexes bearing a dithienylethene (DTE) unit and a hexylthiol spacer were designed to be attached on gold surfaces. Both compounds display photochemically driven switching properties, allowing reversible conversion from open to closed forms of the DTE units upon irradiation in solution. In contrast, only the bimetallic complex undergoes an efficient electrochemical ring closure at low potential, (0.5 V vs. SCE), whereas the monometallic complex shows a simple one-electron reversible redox event. These appealing switching properties could be successfully transferred within diluted self-assembled monolayers (SAMs). Furthermore, the two immobilized organometallics exhibit fast electron-transfer kinetics. Therefore, this organometallic strategy allows us to obtain multifunctional surfaces with the possibility of combining switching events triggered by an electrochemical oxidation at low potential and by light at distinct wavelengths for a write-and-erase function, along with an access to different oxidation states. Importantly, a non-destructive electrochemical read-out is achieved at a sufficiently high scan rate that prevents any electrochemical closing. On the whole, the two surface-confined organometallic compounds exhibit appealing properties for application in molecular electronics.

A new series of ruthenium organometallic carbon-rich complexes, exhibiting fast electron transfer kinetics combined to a low oxidation potential, was synthesized for self-assembled monolayer (SAM) formation on gold surfaces. The molecules consist of highly conjugated ruthenium(II) mono(σ-arylacetylide) or bis(σ-arylacetylide) complexes functionalized with different bridge units with specific (protected) anchoring groups that possess high affinity for gold, such as thiol, carbodithioate, and isocyanide. Single component and mixed SAMs were prepared and fully characterized by wettability studies, infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy (IRRAS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and electrochemical analyses. By applying the Laviron's formalism, fast electron transfer kinetics (≈10(4) s(-1)) were found at the derived self-assemblies while no significant effect could have been evidenced with variation of the bridging unit and of the anchoring moiety. Interestingly, a hexyl aliphatic spacer in the bridging unit with a thiol group and dilution with suitable nonelectroactive thiols lead to better SAM organization and packing, in comparison with undiluted complexes with shorter spacers. Such features make these compounds suitable alternatives to the widely used ferrocene center as redox-active building blocks for reversible charge storage devices.

A new series of chiral ureas containing one or two redox-active ferrocene units was synthesised and studied in order to investigate the effect of planar chirality and central chirality on electrochemical chiral sensing. Binding of chiral carboxylate anions in organic solvents through H-bond formation caused a negative shift in the potentials of the ferrocene/ferrocenium (Fc/Fc(+)) couples of the receptors, demonstrating their use as electrochemical sensors in solution. While the presence of two ferrocene units gave no marked improvement in the chiral sensing capabilities of these systems, the introduction of planar chirality, in addition to central chirality, switched the enantiomeric binding preference of the system and also caused an interesting change in the appearance of some voltammograms, with unusual two-wave behaviour observed upon binding a protected prolinate guest.

RESUMEN

The presence of Pt(II) allows pre-organisation of 4,4'-dicarboxamidoindole-2,2'-bipyridine, enhancing anion affinity with the resulting complex displaying selectivity for dihydrogen phosphate in DMSO-d6-0.5% water. Moreover the Pt(II) complex behaves as a colorimetic sensor for fluoride.
