RESUMEN

To evaluate the potential of perennial buckwheat (Fagopyrum cymosum; FC) as a food source, rutin concentration was investigated. FC contains more than 1% (w/w) rutin and 0.03% quercetin in the leaves, flowers, and seeds. In particular, rutin and quercetin concentrations were high in plant seeds. Therefore, FC is useful as a rutin- and quercetin-rich material. In contrast, the FC seed contained a large amount of rutinosidase. Purified rutinosidase in a homogenous mixture consisted of only one isozyme with M.W. of 58.4 KD and low Km for rutin (0.367 mM). The rutin concentration in the FC dough decreased to almost zero, 10 min after the addition of water. Parallel to the decrease in rutin, quercetin was increased, and strong bitterness was generated, whereas steam-heated flour in which rutinosidase was inactivated did not have rutin hydrolysis and bitterness. These results indicate that rutinosidase is a major cause of rutin hydrolysis and bitterness. The in vitro rutinosidase is inactivated at pH 8.0 and 65 °C. Therefore, the control of dough pH and temperature should be useful in preventing rutinosidase activity.

RESUMEN

We analyzed the internal structure of the nasal cavities of hawksbill, olive ridley and black sea turtles from computed tomography images. The nasal cavities of all three species consisted of a vestibule, nasopharyngeal duct and cavum nasi proprium that included anterodorsal, posterodorsal and anteroventral diverticula, and a small posteroventral salience formed by a fossa of the wall. These findings were similar to those of green and loggerhead sea turtles (Cheloniidae), but differed from those of leatherback sea turtles (Dermochelyidae). Compared to the Cheloniidae species, the nasal cavity in leatherback sea turtles was relatively shorter, wider and larger in volume. Those structural features of the nasal cavity of leatherback sea turtles might help to suppress heat dissipation and reduce water pressure within the nasal cavity in cold and deep waters.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The baseline data obtained in the CKD-JAC demonstrated that insufficient treatment was being provided for renal anemia by institutions specializing in renal disease. The objective of this study was to investigate the status of treatment for renal anemia, including renal/cardiovascular outcomes and mortality, at regional medical facilities since the development of long-acting erythropoiesis-stimulating agents (LA-ESA). METHODS: Non-dialysis outpatients with chronic kidney disease and renal anemia were eligible. Anemia was treated based on the clinical condition of each patient and targeted hemoglobin (Hb) levels. RESULTS: A total of 283 patients from 21 institutions were enrolled and followed up for a maximum of 3 years. A doubling of the serum creatinine level was observed in 89 patients, and renal replacement therapy was initiated in 57 patients. Multivariate Cox regression analysis revealed that a lower mean Hb level (mHb) and receiving fewer frequency of ESA during the follow-up period were independent determinants of the composite renal outcome and overall mortality. During the follow-up period, the percentages of patients with mHb of 10-10.9 g/dL and ≥ 11 g/dL were increased. Similar trends were seen regardless of whether the patients were treated by nephrologists or non-nephrologists. The frequency of ESA treatment was increased among the patients treated by non-nephrologists; however, it was much lower than nephrologists. CONCLUSION: This study demonstrated that, in the era of LA-ESA treatment, higher Hb levels are associated with reduced composite renal outcomes at regional medical facilities. The importance of renal anemia management should be highlighted, even among non-nephrologists.

RESUMEN

Case 1 : A 65-year-old man visited withfrequent urination and dysuria. Pyuria and bacteriuria were observed and prostate specific antigen (PSA) was elevated to 5.69 ng/ml. Prostate cancer and urinary tract infection were suspected. A antibiotics were administered and prostate magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was performed. Massive prostate cancer was strongly suspected from the MRI findings and prostate needle biopsy was performed. The pathological examination revealed nonspecific granulomatous prostatitis. Case 2 : A 69-year-old man visited withfrequent urination. Urinalysis was normal and PSA was elevated to 4.52 ng/ml. Diffuse prostate cancer was suspected from the MRI findings and prostate needle biopsy was performed. Pathological findings were similar to those in case 1. Case 3 : A 61-year-old man presented withno urinary symptoms. Urinalysis was normal and PSA was elevated to 11.64 ng/ml. Medical history was renal pelvic cancer and bladder cancer. He had undergone a transurethral resection of the bladder tumor (TURBT) and intravesical Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) immunotherapy. Prostate cancer was suspected from the MRI findings and prostate needle biopsy was performed. Pathological findings were granulomatous prostatitis. In these three cases, the structure of these prostate capsules was preserved although extensive prostate cancer was suspected from the findings of MRI T2-weighted and diffusion weighted images. Although histopathologic examination is mandatory for differential diagnosis between granulomatous prostatitis and diffuse prostate cancer, prostate MRI may help to distinguish these diseases.

RESUMEN

We demonstrate the iron-catalyzed intermolecular coupling of internal alkynes and thiosalicylic acid derivatives. The reaction was effectively catalyzed by the Fe(acac)2/1,10-phenanthroline catalyst in toluene/HFIP (hexafluoroisopropyl alcohol) as the reaction solvent and afforded several types of 1,3-oxathiine derivatives in moderate to high yields through the intermolecular hydrothiolation and sequential intramolecular cyclization.

RESUMEN

A distributed catchment hydrologic model (Hydrological Simulation Program--FORTRAN; HSPF) with improved sediment production processes was used to evaluate the effect of restoration of cultivated land to forest on the reduction of runoff and sediment load in the Jialingjiang basin, which forms part of the Yangtze River basin, China. The simulation results showed that restoration to forest reduced sediment production even in the case of minimum restoration at a threshold catchment slope of 25°, as advocated in the "Gain for Green Program " planned by the Chinese government, even though reduction of the peak flow rate in the river channel was small. The increase in forest area resulting from lowering of the threshold catchment slope reduced sediment production further.

RESUMEN

This cross-sectional study examined the prevalence of screening-based depression and compared the scores of activities of daily living (ADL) and quality of life (QOL) between community-dwelling elderly subjects with and without depression in Japan. Elderly subjects aged 65 or older living in four rural towns participated in 2000 or 2001 (n = 5363, female 58.3%, mean (S.D.) age 74.6 (7.0) years). Depressive symptoms were assessed using a 15-item Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS-15) and ADL, higher functions, and medical and social histories were assessed by self-report questionnaires. For assessing subjective QOL, a 100 mm visual analogue scale was used. One thousand seven hundred ninety-eight participants (33.5%, range, 32.3-34.6%) had suggestive depression using cutoff 5/6 of GDS-15. Subjects with depression revealed significantly lower scores for ADL and QOL than those without depression. Prevalence of screening-based depression was similar in the four different rural Japanese towns. However, the reported prevalence of depression varies enormously in different country. Primary physicians and caregivers should pay more attention to depression in the community-dwelling elderly population, especially below the threshold of major depression as minor depression or dysthymia.

RESUMEN

As a step towards investigating the chronome (i.e. the inferential endpoints of chaos, trends and rhythms) of heart rate (HR) variability (HRV), we investigated whether the fractality or complexity of HRV is affected by a head-up tilting (HUT) test in the morning after an overnight fast. Spectral and non-linear analyses of HR were performed on data gathered during an 80 degrees passive HUT test in 15 men and 28 women 32.8 +/- 11.5 years of age. The non-linear endpoints included the scaling exponents alpha1 (<11 beats) and alpha2 (>11 beats), which indicate fractal properties, calculated with detrended fluctuation analysis, and the approximate entropy (ApEn), a measure of overall complexity. Passive HUT increased alpha1 (from 0.986 +/- 0.217 to 1.370 +/- 0.185; P = 0.0001), but did not alter alpha2 (from 0.925 +/- 0.110 to 0.958 +/- 0.130; P = 0.19). A slight but statistically significant decrease in ApEn was seen during HUT (from 1.114 +/- 0.131 to 1.013 +/- 0.197; P = 0.002). In the tilt-up position, there was a statistically significant negative correlation between alpha1 and ApEn (r = -0.490; P < 0.05). In both the supine and the tilt-up position, alpha1 was correlated weakly with HF (r = -0.343 and r = -0.322, respectively), and strongly with LF/HF (r = 0.557 and r = 0.795), respectively. There was also a negative correlation between ApEn and LF/HF (r = -0.406 and r = -0.357, respectively). alpha2 did not correlate with any spectral or non-linear measures of HRV. Short-term fractal properties and complexity of HR were lowered with orthostatic stress. Alterations of the autonomic activities could be partly responsible for these changes and await extension of such studies to assess the broad spectral element of HRV, that includes, with components of approximately 3.6 and approximately 10.5 s, cycles with very much lower frequencies, along the scales of hours and even years, that critically modulate the mislabeled (only relatively high- and low-frequency) components in the range of seconds or minutes.

RESUMEN

The article used two NOAA-14 Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) datasets to assess flood damage in the middle and lower reaches of China's Changjiang River (Yangtze River) in 1998. As the AVHRR is an optical sensor, it cannot penetrate the clouds that frequently cover the land during the flood season, and this technology is greatly limited in flood monitoring. However the widely used normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) can be used to monitor flooding, since water has a much lower NDVI value than other surface features. Though many factors other than flooding (e.g. atmospheric conditions, different sun-target-satellite angles, and cloud) can change NDVI values, inundated areas can be distinguished from other types of ground cover by changes in the NDVI value before and after the flood after eliminating the effects of other factors on NDVI. AVHRR data from 26 May and 22 August, 1998 were selected to represent the ground conditions before and after flooding. After accurate geometric correction by collecting GCPs, and atmospheric and angular corrections by using the 6S code, NDVI values for both days and their differences were calculated for cloud-free pixels. The difference in the NDVI values between these two times, together with the NDVI values and a land-use map, were used to identify inundated areas and to assess the area lost to the flood. The results show a total of 358,867 ha, with 207,556 ha of cultivated fields (paddy and non-irrigated field) inundated during the flood of 1998 in the middle and lower reaches of the Changjiang River Catchment; comparing with the reported total of 321,000 and 197,000 ha, respectively. The discrimination accuracy of this method was tested by comparing the results from two nearly simultaneous sets of remote-sensing data (NOAA's AVHRR data from 10 September, 1998, and JERS-1 synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data from 11 September, 1998, with a lag of about 18.5 hr) over a representative flooded region in the study area. The results showed that 67.26% of the total area identified as inundated using the NOAA data was also identified as inundated using the SAR data.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Although heart rate variability (HRV) has been found to be associated with increased mortality in the elderly, the association of HRV and cognitive function and activity of daily living (ADL) capacity in the very elderly are not clear. METHODS: A sample of very elderly people (N = 138), aged 75 years and older, living in Urausu, Hokkaido, participated in this study. Participants were classified into three groups: normal, borderline, and dementia. Time and frequency domain measures of HRV were compared with behavioral and cognitive functions. RESULTS: HRV components, except for the LF/HF ratio, did not correlate with age in the very elderly. The LF component showed a statistically significant correlation with all the variables of behavioral functions. Most HRV components showed statistically significant and positive correlations with the flexibility of the back. The LF and LF/HF ratio were significantly lower in the dementia group than in the normal group. CONCLUSION: Although the meaning of the LF component is still controversial, we foundadefinite relationship between the LF component and behavioral functions. A positive relationship between most HRV components and the flexibility of the back may suggest that reduced flexibility leads to deteriorated cardiopulmonary function and reduced HRV. A further prospective study is needed to examine whether HRV and neurobehavioral functions are independent predictors of morbidity and mortality in very elderly people.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: Effects of environmental conditions on blood pressure (BP) and heart rate (HR) variations as putative factors underlying the onset of vascular events. METHODS: BP and HR were monitored around the clock for 7 days on 54 residents from Urausu, Hokkaido, Japan. Daytime, night-time, and 24-h means served to identify dippers and non-dippers. Questionnaire-assessed depression and subjective quality of life were related to BP and HR by analyses of variance and linear regression. Statistical significance was at 5%. RESULTS: A circaseptan (about 7-day) component characterizes the 24-h mean and standard deviation (SD) of HR, and the daytime and day-night ratio of systolic BP. The SD of HR is higher on weekends and lower on Mondays and Thursdays. When awake, systolic BP is lowest on Sundays and the day-night ratio is optimal on weekends (Saturdays: 15.7 +/- 9.4%; Sundays: 14.0 +/- 13.2%). Depression was detected in 15 subjects, who had higher mean systolic and diastolic BP values (systolic BP: P = 0.028 Fridays, P = 0.021 Tuesdays; diastolic BP: P = 0.022 Mondays, P = 0.006 daytime Mondays) and a lower day-night ratio of diastolic BP (P = 0.012 Tuesdays, P = 0.005 Wednesdays, and P = 0.038 Thursdays). A depressive mood correlated positively with 24-h averages of systolic (P = 0.037) and diastolic (P = 0.030) BP. CONCLUSIONS: Depression (and subjective quality of life) can affect BP and HR variability. The results indicate the role that psychological factors may play in the pathogenesis of cardiovascular disease. Therapeutic implications are suggested for primary and secondary prevention.
