RESUMEN

Results of this multicentric study have shown that by giving 10 g (10 tablets) of Master Amino acid Pattern (MAP) as a substitute for dietary proteins, once a day, to 114 overweight participants undergoing the American Nutrition Clinics/Overweight Management Program (ANC/OMP), the participants' nitrogen balance could be maintained in equilibrium with essentially no calories (MAP 1 g=0.04 kcal), thereby preserving the body's structural and functional proteins, eliminating excessive water retention from the interstitial compartment, and preventing the sudden weight increase after study conclusion commonly known as the yo-yo effect. Study results have shown that the use of MAP, in conjunction with the ANC/OMP, has proven to be safe and effective by preventing those adverse effects associated with a negative nitrogen balance, such as oversized or flabby tissue, stretch marks, sagging of breast tissue, increased hair loss, faded hair color, and fragile or brittle nails. Also preventing those anomalies commonly associated with weight-loss diets, such as hunger, weakness, headache caused by ketosis, constipation, or decreased libido, the use of MAP, in conjunction with the ANC/OMP, allowed for mean weight loss of 1.4 kg (3 lb) per week.

RESUMEN

Results of this multicentric study have shown that by giving Master Amino acid Pattern (MAP) as a sole and total substitute of dietary proteins to 500 overweight participants undergoing the American Nutrition Clinics/Overweight Management Program (ANC/OMP), the participants' body nitrogen balance could be maintained in equilibrium with essentially no calories (MAP 1 g=0.04 kcal), thereby preserving the body's structural and functional proteins, eliminating excessive water retention from the interstitial compartment, and preventing the sudden weight increase after study conclusion commonly known as the yo-yo effect. Study results have shown that the use of MAP, in conjunction with the ANC/OMP regimen, has proven to be safe and effective by preventing those adverse effects associated with a negative nitrogen balance, such as oversized or flabby tissue, stretch marks, the sagging of breast tissue, increased hair loss, faded hair color, and fragile or brittle nails. Also prevented were those anomalies commonly associated with weight-loss diets, such as hunger, weakness, headache caused by ketosis, constipation, and decreased libido. The use of MAP in conjunction with the ANC/OMP also allowed for mean weight loss of 2.5 kg (5.5 lb) per week, achieved through reduction of excessive fat tissue and elimination of excessive water retention from the interstitial compartment.

RESUMEN

Three cases of immune thrombocytopenic purpura after the first dose of recombinant hepatitis B vaccine occurred in infants under 6 months of age. Other possible causes of this condition were excluded. Antiplatelet antibodies were present. A defect in platelet production was excluded in two children. Corticosteroid treatment was effective. Subsequent administration of other vaccines (against polio, diphtheria, and tetanus) did not cause relapse of thrombocytopenia.

RESUMEN

The terms "multicystic encephalomalacia" and "subcortical leucomalacia" (SCL) are used to describe the presence of areas of necrosis that develop into cystic lesions inside the brain. These lesions are generally due to severe asphyxia and/or hypotension. The designation SCL can also be used to describe the extent and the seat of the lesion in the brain or to distinguish subcortical lesions from periventricular and/or combined ones. In this study we give an account of our experience with eight newborns admitted to our neonatal intensive care unit, who presented clinical-neurological alterations and encephalomalacic lesions whose presence was documented by ultrasonography.

RESUMEN

The author describes two cases of full dental arches with only a few natural teeth in place that were treated with multi-dimensional, osseointegrated implants. The former case utilized the technique of titanium casting of the caps on natural teeth and on implants, with intra-oral welding of the caps to the implants. In the latter case, the techniques of welding and casting differ.

RESUMEN

Because nature has given humans from 14 to 16 teeth per arch, the author maintains that an implantologist ought to replace each missing tooth with an implant and calls this philosophical creed "implant isotopy". Three different prosthetic solutions are suggested for the cases of either complete or partially edentulous arches, where from 12 to 14 abutments are emerging from the gingiva. The first type consists of parallel protruding posts. The second type is a modification of the first method through the connection of all the posts (although they are not perfectly parallel) via a titanium wire-drawn bar to be welded via endoral welding. Finally, the third type consists of a laboratory cast titanium denture composed of different sections that can be connected to one another and to the implant abutments via endoral welding.

RESUMEN

The authors describe a rare case of congenital, bilateral arteriovenous fistulas of the lung, without other symptoms of hemorrhagic telangiectasis. The disease was diagnosed in a ten-year-old child, because of a chronic hypossiemia state. The angiography with digitalized technique defined, at the best, the vascular anomalies; the examen cannot be substituted by other imaging methods. First a therapeutic embolisation in angiography was tried without success because of the dimension of the arteriovenous shunt. Then a local excisional therapy was carried out, on one lung. One year after the operation, the oxygenative and clinical conditions of the patient are excellent.

RESUMEN

56 children, aged between 0-13 month, affected by chronic vomiting were evaluated both with ultrasound and radiological methods, in a double blind study. 22/56 children resulted to be affected by gastro-oesophageal reflux (GER) with upper GI series versus 18/56 with ultrasound. Four cases, ultrasound negative and X-ray positive, represented a borderline situation in which a mild gastro-oesophageal reflux is to be considered paraphysiological phenomenon. The accuracy and handleness of ultrasound evaluation in GER are emphasized.

RESUMEN

Eight 40-day pregnant gilts, previously treated with an adjuvanted-inactivated viral preparation (AIVP) obtained with a field strain of porcine parvovirus (PPV) together with 4 pregnant untreated controls, were subjected to challenge infection with a virulent strain of PPV at the 40th day of gestation. After challenge, all controls became febrile for 2 to 8 days, whereas only one gilt among those which had been treated with the AIVP experienced fever which lasted 4 days. Virus was consistently recovered from fecal swabs obtained from the controls and only sporadically from feces of AIVP-treated gilts. When the gilts were killed 53 days after challenge infection, no macroscopic lesions were found in any of the gilts in either groups, but fetal death was observed in the two groups of animals. However, the rate of dead fetuses was much higher among the control (70.5%) than among those from the AIVP-treated gilts (10.1%). Virus was recovered from 23 of the 24 dead fetuses in the control group and only from 3 among the 8 dead fetuses which were reported for the AIVP-treated gilts.

RESUMEN

Starting out from Oral Implantology pioneers, the Author comes down to the present situation, in an effort to show which values should be considered as the true ones. "Nothing new under the skies" is the Author's comment, when he examines all the techniques and materials presented as "new" for commercial purposes, whereas they are not new at all. To prove his statements he goes back to the work of some implantology pioneers, such as Formiggini, Perron Andrès, Cherchève, Strock, Pasqualini, Muratori, Tramonte, Linkow and others. In going over their most remarkable techniques, he maintains that what is being proposed nowadays as brand new was actually done long ago. Only names are now different: the process now called fibrous osseointegration used to be named osteofibrosis, and what is now called osseointegration was known as complete ossification. In order to remove the great confusion now prevailing in the dozens of implant systems, as well as in implant philosophy itself, the Author maintains that good implantologists should follow two fundamental principles: 1) implants should be built in a great variety of sizes, in order to take full advantage of cortical bones. They should be multicortical, generally quadricortical, since they should rest on the sinus floor cortical bone, on the alveolar ridge, the palatal and the buccal cortical bones (this is true for the elements implanted in the upper arch and in the front-mesial arch).(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

RESUMEN

An experienced implantologist introduces a new, flexible, and versatile endosteal implant system. Requiring only a single bur, the implant may be used immediately or permitted to osteointegrate. Since intra-oral welding techniques may be used, parallelism of implants is not a requisite for the successful completion of mesiostructure double-railed bars. A variety of prosthetic techniques may be incorporated into the Gimlet system, and the implants themselves can be used in a number of locations and employed for multiple purposes.

RESUMEN

The capacity of different preparations of inactivated porcine parvovirus to stimulate antibody response was studied. The adjuvants chosen were aluminium hydroxide gel [Al(OH)3, 30-50%], water-in-mineral-oil emulsion (w/Mo, 50%) alone or combined with Al(OH)3, and two synthetic products known as dimethyldioctadecylammoniumbromide (DDA, 0.16%) and an acrylic acid polymer resin (Carbopol 934P, 0.02%) respectively. For each preparation, swine and guinea pigs devoid of antibody to porcine parvovirus were inoculated. Among all the preparations tested, two of them i.e. emulsified Al(OH)3 adsorbed antigen and Carbopol 934P emulsified virus, gave the most significant antibody response in animals, without any difference being noted in the behaviour of the two animal species.
