RESUMEN

Histocompatibility antigens (A, B & C loci) and 23 other single gene characters were studied in 204 pulmonary tuberculosis patients belonging to a single endogamous group in South India. None of the previously reported associations with HLA antigens was confirmed, nor any new one found. The blood O and Rh negative associations were also not confirmed, although a new association with the Jk blood group system appears possible. Of particular interest is the association with the phosphoglucomutase (PGM1) system, which parallels that found in a different population located some 1000 km away. Relative risks were calculated to measure the resistance of individuals with the PGM1*2+ allele.

RESUMEN

Possible differences in the growth of boys of four language groups were investigated by anthropometric measurements in a sample of 582 boys of documented age from a Hyderabad school. Correlation of all body measurements with age was sufficiently close over the age range studied to allow linear regressions on age to be fitted. Covariance analysis suggested a difference in trunk length, with Telugu speakers having longer trunks than the other language groups, both absolutely and after stature was taken into account.

RESUMEN

Phenotype and gene frequencies of 10 blood group and 12 red cell enzymes are examined in urban Hindu and Muslim and tribal Lambadi samples of Andhra Pradesh, South India. Genetic heterogeneity is suggested between the tribal and the urban samples, both in their gene frequencies and in their breeding structure.
