RESUMEN

This report presents n-type single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNT) films with ultra-long air stability using a cationic surfactant and demonstrates that the n-type Seebeck coefficient can be maintained for more than two years, which is the highest stability reported thus far to the best of our knowledge. Furthermore, the SWCNT films exhibit an extremely low thermal conductivity of 0.62 ± 0.08 W/(m·K) in the in-plane direction, which is very useful for thin-film TEGs. We fabricated all-carbon-nanotube TEGs, which use p-type SWCNT films and the n-type SWCNT films developed, and their air-stability was investigated. The TEGs did not degrade for 160 days and exhibited an output voltage of 24 mV, with a maximum power of 0.4 µW at a temperature difference of 60 K. These results open a pathway to enable the widespread use of carbon nanotube TEGs as power sources in IoT sensors.

RESUMEN

A spot periodic heating method is a highly accurate, non-contact method for the evaluation of anisotropy and relative thermophysical property distribution. However, accurately evaluating thermal diffusivity is difficult due to the influence of temperature wave reflection from the whole surface of the sample. This study proposes a method to derive thermal diffusivity using a parameter table based on heat transfer equations using the concept of optimum distance between heating-point and measurement point. This method considers finite sample size, sensitivity distribution of infrared ray detector, intensity distribution of heating laser and sample thickness. In these results, the obtained thermal diffusivity of pure copper corresponded well with previous literature values. In conclusion, this method is considered highly effective in evaluating the thermal diffusivity in the horizontal direction.

RESUMEN

The present study aimed to investigate the therapeutic efficacy of post-inflammatory treatment with luteolin on endotoxin-induced uveitis (EIU) in rats. Intraperitoneal injection of 10 mg/kg luteolin or 1 mg/kg prednisolone (Pred) at 4 hr post-lipopolysaccharide (LPS) injection (200 µg) was associated at 24 hr post-LPS injection with decreased clinical severity scores, number of inflammatory cells, protein levels and levels of tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, nitric oxide (NO) and prostaglandin (PG) E2 in the aqueous humor (AqH) and degrees of histological ocular tissue injury. The anti-inflammatory potency of luteolin was comparable to that of Pred. Luteolin exhibited robust efficacy in the treatment of EIU in rats, indicating its potential clinical utility in treating uveitis.

RESUMEN

The aim of the present study was to investigate the efficacy of luteolin on endotoxin-induced uveitis (EIU) in rats. EIU was induced in Lewis rats by subcutaneous injections of lipopolysaccharide (LPS). One hr before the LPS injection, 0.1, 1 or 10 mg/kg luteolin or 1 mg/kg prednisolone was intraperitoneally injected. We investigated its effect upon clinical scores, cellular infiltration and protein leakage, as well as on the level of tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, nitric oxide (NO) and prostaglandin (PG) E2 in the aqueous humor (AqH). Histologic examination and immunohistochemical analysis in the iris-ciliary body (ICB) were performed to determine the expressions of cyclooxygenase (COX)-2 and inducible NO synthase (iNOS), and then the activated nuclear factor (NF)-κB p65, I kappa B (IκB)-α degradation, phosphorylated (p)-IκB kinase (IKK) α/ß and activator protein (AP)-1 c-Jun. Luteolin suppressed, in a dose-dependent manner, the clinical scores, number of inflammatory cells, the protein concentration, and the TNF-α, NO and PGE2 levels in the AqH and improved the histiologic status of the ocular tissue. Luteolin suppressed the expression of iNOS and COX-2 and the activated NF-κB p65, IκB-α degradation, p-IKKα/ß and AP-1 p-c-Jun in the ICB. The anti-inflammatory potency of 10 mg/kg luteolin was as strong as that observed with 1 mg/kg prednisolone. These results demonstrate that luteolin attenuates ocular inflammation by inhibiting expression and release of inflammatory markers, along with the inhibition of the activated NF-κB pathway and at least partly AP-1 activity in the ICB.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Snodgrass tubularized incised plate urethroplasty (SUP) is versatile and has good cosmesis. However, postoperative meatal/neourethral stenosis (M/N-S) is common enough for some surgeons to add a dorsal inlay graft (DIG) harvested from the inner prepuce and sutured to cover the longitudinal midline incision of the urethral plate. This is the first formal assessment of the effectiveness of DIG for preventing M/N-S. METHODS: We reviewed the medical records of 100 consecutive SUP cases performed by a single surgeon between 2003 and 2010 comparing SUP + DIG (S + D group, n = 50) with SUP - DIG (S - D group, n = 50). Mean follow-up was 3.6 years. Data were analyzed statistically using the χ(2), 2-way ANOVA, and Mann-Whitney tests, with P < .05 considered significant. RESULTS: Severity of hypospadias and type of SUP were similar. Mean age at SUP was 3.3 years in S + D and 3.6 years in S-D (P = NS). There were 4 complications in the S + D group: urethrocutaneous fistula (n = 3) and neourethral stenosis without diverticulum (n = 1). There were 15 complications in the S-D group : meatal stenosis (n = 2), neourethral stenosis with or without diverticulum (n = 6), urethrocutaneous fistula (n = 7) (P < .01). M/N-S was significantly less in the S + D group (1 vs 8; P < .05). CONCLUSIONS: We strongly recommend that DIG be performed routinely during SUP.
