RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: Evaluate the assimilation capacity and ease of handling of the Fox plane accessory by dentistry students, through a questionnaire about the experience in using this device compared to the conventional one. Its intention is to minimize possible interpretation errors and challenges that the traditional method determines. METHODS: After approval by the Research Ethics Committee, registration at Sistema Nacional de Informações sobre Ética em Pesquisa/National Information System on Research Ethics (SISNEP) and signing of the free and informed consent form, 51 undergraduate students treating patients in need of complete dentures at Instituto de Ciência e Tecnologia/Institute of Science and Technology (ICT) Unesp in São José dos Campos completed a questionnaire to evaluate the technical ease of use and provider acceptance. The obtained data were submitted to statistical analysis, evaluating technical ease and acceptance by operators. RESULTS: The results were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics using the Jamovi 2.2.5 software. From the responses, the frequency was obtained for each question in the questionnaire, then the weighted mean was calculated, average rating and percentage. With the results of these analyses it was possible to measure the level of satisfaction of the participants in relation to the use of the device. CONCLUSION: It was concluded that most students have difficulty using the conventional Fox plane and that the accessory facilitated the process of determining the superior orientation plane, and its ease of use.

RESUMEN

The present study aimed to review the literature on the main complications of antineoplastic therapies and the degree of knowledge of dental surgeons about these complications. A bibliographic search was conducted in the main health databases PUBMED (www.pubmed.gov) and Scholar Google (www.scholar.google.com.br), in which studies published from 1987 to 2023 were collected. Laboratory studies, case reports, systematic and literature reviews, which were developed in living individuals, about the main neoplastic genes and their relationship with the cells of individuals affected by neoplasms in the head and neck region, and studies on the care with this group of patients, were included. Therefore, articles that did not deal with neoplasm and the main complications of antineoplastic therapies were excluded. Neoplasm is a clonal disorder, caused by mutations, resulting from changes in the genetic structure of cells. Each healthy cell has instructions on how to grow and divi de. In the presence of any error in these instructions (mutation), it can result in a diseased cell that, when proliferating, may cause a tumor. Countless knowledge has been accumulated over the years on the main characteristics of neoplasms, whether they are cancer cell biology, carcinogenesis mechanism, neoplasms of the maxillofacial system and sequels of antineoplastic treatments. In this context, methods have been developed that offer a better quality of life for patients diagnosed with this pathology, as well as preventive vaccine models that may, in the not too distant future, contribute to this goal to be successfully achieved.

This study aimed to evaluate the use of bioengineering tools, finite element analysis, strain gauge analysis, photoelastic analysis, and digital image correlation, in computational studies with greater validity and reproducibility. A bibliographic search was performed in the main health databases PUBMED and Scholar Google, in which different studies, among them, laboratory studies, case reports, systematic reviews, and literature reviews, which were developed in living individuals, were included. Therefore, articles that did not deal with the use of finite element analysis, strain gauge analysis, photoelastic analysis, and digital image correlation were excluded, as well as their use in computational studies with greater validity and reproducibility. According to the methodological analysis, it is observed that the average publication of articles in the Pubmed database was 2.03 and with a standard deviation of 1.89. While in Google Scholar, the average was 0.78 and the standard deviation was 0.90. Thus, it is possible to verify that there was a significant variation in the number of articles in the two databases. Modern dentistry finds in finite element analysis, strain gauge, photoelastic and digital image correlation a way to analyze the biomechanical behavior in dental materials to obtain results that assist to obtain rehabilitations with favorable prognosis and patient satisfaction.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effect of irradiation with an optical-fiber device on the bond strength of hollow and partially opaque intraradicular posts. MATERIALS AND METHODS: An optical-fiber accessory tip was attached to a light-curing unit to emit light through the central hollow of an experimental fiberglass post. The samples were divided into 4 groups (n = 80) according to the protocol (Variolink N [light cured] or Multilink N [dual-curing luting material]) and the light-curing mode (performed conventionally or with the optical fiber): GF: light-curing luting material; GFF: light-curing luting material and optical fiber; GD: dual-curing luting material; GDF: dual-curing luting material and optical fiber. The samples were tested immediately or after aging. Push-out bond strength, failure mode, degree of conversion (DC, assessed at the peak of 1750 cm-1), and stress distribution by finite element analysis were performed. Quantitative data were analyzed using 3-way ANOVA (luting material x light curing x depth) and 2-way ANOVA (aging x luting material), followed by Tukey's test. RESULTS: Bond strength was significantly affected by the luting material protocol (p < 0.001), depth (p = 0.010), and light curing mode (p = 0.031). The GFF group revealed higher bond strength in the middle and apical portions. The most frequent failure modes were adhesive in the apical portion for the GFF and GDF groups. The DC was higher for GF and GFF groups. CONCLUSION: Using the optical-fiber device led to superior bond strength results when a dual-curing luting material was used.

RESUMEN

This study aimed to evaluate the biomechanical behavior, stress distributions and bone microstrain of fixed partial dentures (FPD) with ceramic abutments supported on monotype zirconia implants, titanium implants and two-piece zirconia implants, using finite element analysis. A three-dimensional model of the jaw was simulated containing 1.0 mm thick cortical bone and cancellous bone tissue. A FPD and implant models (4.1 x 10 mm) were modeled containing a cement-retained implant abutment. These models were replicated in three groups with similar geometries: Titanium Implant and Zirconia Abutment (Ti-Zr); Zirconia Implant and Zirconia Abutment (Zr-Zr) and Monotype Zirconia Implant (Zr-S). An axial load of 300 N was applied to the center of the first premolar. The microstrain (µÎµ) and the Von-Mises stress (MPa) were assumed as failures criteria. For the three groups, a higher stress concentration was observed in the region of FPD connectors. The Ti-Zr group showed a higher stress concentration in the prosthesis and implant when compared to the other groups. However, the smaller elastic modulus of the titanium implant, in relation to the zirconia, provided a lower stress in the abutment and in the prosthetic screw. The monotype implant system allowed a more homogeneous stress distribution and its strain were predominantly located in the cervical region of the peri-implant bone tissue. Monotype or two-piece zirconia implants can be used for rehabilitation with FPD. However, the absence of separation between implant and abutment in the monotype system avoids the stress concentration in the prosthetic screw and reduced the peri-implant bone strain.

The present study aimed to evaluate the flexural strength of an experimental hollow glass fiber post, and the bond strength between this experimental post and root dentin, associating the use of an optical fiber illuminating device, under the aging process, in addition to determine the stress distribution by Finite Element Analysis (FEA). The experimental post and optical fiber illuminating device are intended to increase the polymerization effectiveness of resin cements in the middle and apical regions of root canals. For the 3-point bending test, strictly of the fiber post, the samples were divided into 4 groups (n=10): conventional post (pc), experimental post without filling (pp), with resin cement filling (ppc) and with optical fiber filling (ppf). For the Pull-out test, 100 roots of bovine teeth were restored with intraradicular retainers and composite resin crowns, distributed into 10 groups (n=10), with the following variables: glass fiber post type [conventional (C) or hollow (P)], the photocuring system [with or without the optical fiber illuminating device (O)], the type of resin cement [light cured (F) or dual cured (D)] and aging of the samples [with and without mechanical cycling (C)]. The aging process was performed by mechanical cycling and the samples were submitted to the Pull-out bond strength test. Failure mode analysis was performed using a stereomicroscope. Finite Element Analysis evaluated the stress distribution by von Mises analysis, total strain and maximum principal stress in Ansys Software 19.3. Statistical analysis consisted of the Shapiro-Wilk normality test, 1-, 2- and 3-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey test 5%. The means and standard deviations of flexural strength were (MPa): pc = 677 ± 81.1; ppc = 419 ± 23.2; ppf = 200 ± 32.5 and pp = 177 ± 32.8. The means and standard deviations of bond strength were (MPa): CD = 12.2 ± 1.21; PD = 11.1 ± 1.32; PF = 10.9 ± 1.29; POD = 13.7 ± 1.16; POF = 11.9 ± 1.48; CDC = 10.1 ± 1.33; PDC = 9.25 ± 1.11; PFC = 8.37 ± 1.25; PODC = 10.8 ± 0.95 and POFC = 9.82 ± 1.02. The failure mode results were: adhesive between post and cement (56%), mixed predominantly adhesive between cement and dentin (22%), adhesive between cement and dentin (14%) and mixed predominantly adhesive between post and cement (8 %). It was concluded that among the experimental posts, the hollow post group filled with resin cement obtained the highest flexural strength value, the use of the illuminating device increased the results of bond strength in the hollow post groups and there was no difference in the stress distribution among the groups (AU)

RESUMEN

ABSTRACT: The present study aims to describe through a literature review, the main types of noble and non-noble alloys in dentistry looking to identify the adhesion mechanisms, compositions and mechanical properties, and its applicability as a rehabilitation resource nowadays. A bibliographic search was conducted in the main health databases PUBMED (www.pubmed.gov) and Scholar Google (www.scholar.google.com.br), in which studies published from 1971 to 2021 were collected. Laboratory studies, case reports, systematic and literature reviews, which were developed in living individuals. Articles that did not deal with metal alloys and its use in dentistry were excluded. Through the review, it was possible to ver ify that all works presented the metal alloys and their main properties, indicating that they are divided into three main types: hi gh noble alloys, noble alloys and base metal alloys differing in their levels of constituent noble metals. Several alloys and meta ls are available for the dental market each presenting advantages and disadvantages, mainly based on its specific composition.Continuous research and development are resulting in the production of new technologies and products, giving dental surgeons even more options in the design and manufacture of restorations using metal alloys and understanding that these resources will still be viable alternatives in oral rehabilitations. However, further studies on metal alloys are needed to better understand this subject.

This article describes an alternative open tray technique for implant impressions using a novel reinforced silica-nylon mesh covered with acrylic resin as a splitting system in assembling the abutment complex. The purpose of the procedure is to simplify the technique and improve the resin contraction during clinical procedure, and also optimizes and reduces the chairside time for the patient. The clinical report was supported by an in vitrostudy where an analysis tool, Strain Gauge Analysis, was used to prove the clinical effectiveness of the technique. The peri-implant strain was determined on polyurethane casts with the torqued prosthesis, and statistically there was no difference in strain under torque of transfers or in the final prosthesis. The nylon mesh attached to acrylic resin represents a promising option for open tray impression technique, creating a resistant union to transfer in an excellent procedure time(AU)

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Nylon is a polymer that its use to reinforce dental resins has shown positive results such as increased flexural strength. The aim of this study was to evaluate the bond strength between dental resins and a nylon reinforcement. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Forty cylindrical nylon blocks with 13 x 23 mm with 0.5% by volume of silica and 40 without were made. Half of the samples of each nylon composition were sandblasted with aluminum oxide (50µm) for 3 s (2.8 bar pressure, distance: 20 mm, incidence angle: 90o). On the nylon blocks, cylinders of chemically activated acrylic resin and indirect composite resin were made, with a bonding area of 6,28 mm2. Eight different groups were obtained according to the material used and the surface treatment (n = 10): Acrylic Resin + Nylon; GAS: Acrylic Resin + Nylon with Silica; GAT: Acrylic Resin + Nylon (Al2O3); GAST: Acrylic Resin + Nylon with Silica (Al2O3); GC: Composite Resin + Nylon; GCS: Composite Resin + Nylon with Silica; GCT: Composite Resin + Nylon (Al2O3); GCST: Composite Resin + Nylon with Silica (Al2O3). The shear test was carried out. The Student's and the Kruskal-Wallis test was adopted. RESULTS: There was no statistically difference in the bond strength for nylon with silica for the acrylic resin group. For the composite groups, nylon with silica did not present a statistically difference without surface treatment (p = 0.10) and with surface treatment the bond strength decreased (p = 0.000). The GCT showed a higher bond strength (0.89 MPa). The surface treatment improved the bond strength for the both groups. CONCLUSIONS: The presence of silica in the nylon composition did not influence the bond strength between materials evaluated. However, the surface treatment with aluminum oxide proved to be favorable for this adhesion. Key words:Nylons - Resins, Synthetic - Structures Strengthening - Dental Research.

RESUMEN

Systemic scleroderma is a relatively rare, autoimmune, chronic, and debilitating disease, and its etiology is unknown. The disease is characterized by vasomotor disturbances causing skin and mucosa hardening, hand stiffness, excess production of collagen fibers, and impairment of the internal organs associated with the immune system. Extreme mouth-opening limitation is one of the symptoms in the oral cavity, and compromises dental intervention. One of the fundamental steps when performing a dental procedure is dental arch impression. In the presented clinical case, limited mouth opening hindered the impression accuracy. The objective was to present an alternative impression technique for a patient affected by scleroderma, with limited mouth opening and the need for oral rehabilitation with a removable partial prosthesis in the maxillary arch. An individualized tray was developed with design characteristics that allowed access to the oral cavity and removal, after which it was possible to perform the oral impression, reproducing the areas of interest without causing injury to the oral tissues. The orientation plan was elaborated after obtaining the cast. The teeth were assembled, tested in the mouth, and sent to the laboratory for acrylization. The prosthesis was placed once ready. The alternative impression technique enabled oral rehabilitation of the patient despite the mouth-opening limitation, and provided an accurate impression and a good prosthetic result.

RESUMEN

ABSTRACT: This study aims to evaluate the physical, chemical, mechanical and optical properties of Bulk-Fill resin, in relation to the literature and its proper clinical uses. A bibliographic search was performed in the main health databases PUBMED (www.pubmed.gov) and Scholar Google (www.scholar.google.com.br), in which articles published from 1994 to 2020 were collected. Laboratory studies, case reports, systematic reviews and literature reviews, which were developed in living individuals, were included. Therefore, articles that did not deal with the characteristics of the Bulk-Fill resin and its proper clinical uses were excluded. The use of Bulk-Fill resin has been progressively increasing over the years, presenting good properties, achieving success in clinical performance, ease of handling and thus has become the material of choice for dentists. In addition, its longevity demonstrates durability with mechanical properties and resistance to tooth structure. Bulk - Fill resins have characteristics similar to traditional composite resins, when performed according the usage protocol. With the use of this group of resins in a single increment, possible failures that occur during the restorative procedure can be minimized, such as: less chance of incorporating bubbles and a volumetric contraction with less stress on the interface.

RESUMEN

ABSTRACT: To evaluate Knoop microhardness and diametral compression strength at different polymerization times. A total of 80 cylindrical samples with Filtek resin™ One Bulk Fill were made to perform the in vitro study, using half of total samples (n=40) for each test and divided equally between groups (n=10). All samples were made according to ISO 4049 using 2 mm thickness Teflon matrix and a central orifice with 4 mm diameter. Four different times of light-curing in Standard mode suggested by the light-unit manufacturer were selected, therefore, group 1 samples (G1) were light-cured for 5 seconds; group 2 (G2) for 10 seconds; group 3 (G3) for 15 seconds, and group 4 (G4) for 20 seconds. A radiant display, which means a power in mW/cm2 by time in seconds was expressed in Joules (J). The samples were stored in a dark container with distilled water at a temperature of 37°C for 48 hours before testing. One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) with T-Test (LSD) of multiple comparisons of the mean values of Knoop hardness and diametral compression strength was performed, with significance index α=0.05. Regarding the Knoop microhardness test, G1 (35.73 ± 6.2) presented the lowest values, followed by G2, while G3 and G4 did not present statistical differences between them. For the diametral compression test, G1 (1387.76 ± 190.51) obtained the lowest value when compared to the other groups. G2, G3, and G4 did not present significant statistical differences. The different polymerization times influenced the Knoop microhardness and the diametral compression strength of Bulk Fill resin.

G2, G3 y G4 no presentaron diferencias estadísticamente significativas.

This study investigated the influence of silica-nylon reinforcement on the stress distribution and fracture load of a resin-bonded fixed partial dental prosthesis (RBFDP). Three-unit RBFDPs (N = 60) were inserted between the first premolar and the first molar of a maxillary model. The groups were divided according to the nylon reinforcement (n = 20/group): conventional fixed prosthesis (without reinforcement), prosthesis with silica-nylon reinforcement positioned vertically, and prosthesis with silica-nylon reinforcement positioned horizontally. Half of the specimens were tested after 24 hours in a universal testing machine until fracture (1,000 kgf; 1 mm/minute) to determine the single load to fracture. The other half was submitted to mechanical aging during 106 cycles (100 N, 2 Hz), totaling 6 groups (n = 10/group). The results were analyzed by two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) (α = 5%). The stress distribution for non-aged groups was simulated using finite element analysis. The numeric prostheses were modeled similarly to the in vitro assay. ANOVA showed no statistical difference between groups (P < .05) for load to fracture. However, the use of the reinforcement provided stability even after the failure, as the parts did not separate. The computational analysis showed similar biomechanical behavior among the groups. The use of the nylon reinforcement does not influence the fracture load or the stress distribution, but it does enable the prosthesis to remain in position after failure.

RESUMEN

ABSTRACT: The present study aims to describe, through a case report, the functioning of bone grafts, where they are obtained including bone banks and the different dental areas in which it is used. A 50-year.old female patient HMR, sought the postgraduate college of dentistry CECAPE for oral rehabilitation. The initial clinical examination revealed the absence of several dental elements in both the maxilla and mandi ble, bone resorption in the entire maxillary extension where there was an absence of elements in the anterior region and the presence of a torus in the palatal region. Initial tomographic examinations of the maxilla and mandible were performed, looking for the best conduct regarding the diagnosis and planning of the case. After the clinical and radiographic examinations was performed, and the diagnosis was reached, it was determined as a treatment for oral rehabilitation of the maxilla, bone grafting and an Implant-supported Removable Partial Prosthesis and for the mandible a Dento-muco-supported Removable Partial Prosthesis. Dental treatments and oral rehabilitation from the use of bone tissues and bone grafting have become commonly used. Procedures that would normally lead to failure started to increase the percentage of successes due to the use of these biomaterials. The use of bone grafts in dentistry has been shown to be a very effective and useful resource, considering its great applicability in bone reconstructions in different areas of dentistry.

Objective: to evaluate the main characteristics of dental ceramics, resin cements, surface treatments and verification of their failure modes, in relation to the literature and their respective clinical uses. Material and Methods: a bibliographic search was conducted in the main health databases PUBMED (www.pubmed.gov) and Scholar Google (www.scholar.google.com.br), in which studies published from 2002 to 2020 were collected. Laboratory studies, case reports, systematic and literature reviews, which were developed in living individuals, were included. Therefore, articles that did not deal with the main characteristics of dental ceramics, resin cements, surface treatments and verification of their failure modes, in relation to the literature and their respective clinical uses were excluded. Results: ceramics can be classified into glass-matrix ceramics, polycrystalline ceramics and hybrid ceramics. Just as there are different compositions of ceramics and bonding agents, there are also some surface treatment protocols that vary according to the choice of these materials. Conclusion: several ceramic systems are available, making professionals in the prosthetic area need a constant update about their properties and indications, since good results are not due exclusively to the type of material used, but also to the selection of the best material, type of preparation, professional's skill, resin cements, surface treatments and verification of their failure modes. In this context, further studies are needed in relation to dental ceramics and their proper clinical use

Objective: analyze the influence of bond strength between resin cement and feldspathic ceramics using different concentrations and application times of hydrofluoric acid (HF). Materials and Methods: 18 feldspathic ceramic discs (Ø10mm - 2mm thickness) were made through the incremental technique, which were included in acrylic resin and regularized with silicon carbide sandpaper with granulations of 600, 1200 and 2000 through a polishing machine with a speed of 600 rpm. Soon after, they were immersed in distilled water for 10 minutes in an ultrasonic bath. All specimens were conditioned with HF and silanized. Four cement cylinders were made on each specimen (n=12), manufactured with Relyx ARC resin cement. After that, it was divided into six groups according to the surface treatment protocol: G1 (5% - 40s); G2 (5% - 60s); G3 (5% - 80s); G4 (10% - 40s); G5 (10% - 60s) e G6 (10% - 80s). The specimens were subjected to the Microshear Test, with vertical force at a speed of 0.5 mm min on the specimen. The microshear bond strength was calculated and expressed in Megapascal (MPa). The data were submitted to two-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey's test for multiple comparisons, with a significance level of 5%. Results: when the concentration of HF was analyzed, there were no statistical differences (p>0.05). In the comparison of application times, G3 (5% - 80s) and G6 (10% - 80s) obtained higher results of microshear resistance than the other groups. Conclusion: The different concentrations of HF did not influence the bond strength between feldspathic ceramics and resin cement. However, the increase in the time of HF conditioning affected in the bond strength.

The use of resin-bonded fixed dental prostheses is a rehabilitative treatment option in cases of missing teeth. Composite resin is a material with good mechanical and aesthetic characteristics, but it is necessary to use reinforcements to provide greater resistance to the prosthesis. The present study aims to evaluate the maximum fracture load using a silica-nylon reinforcement system on resin-bonded fixed dental prostheses made of indirect composite resin. In vitro test simulated an anterior (A) and posterior (P) three-element resin-bonded fixed dental prostheses. Thus, 80 specimens were made in 8 experimental groups (n = 10), with variables the presence of the silica-nylon reinforcement system (R) and the mechanical cycling of the prosthesis (C). The aging process was performed through mechanical cycling for 106 cycles at 4 Hz (ERIOS ER-11000 Plus, São Paulo, Brazil). The samples were tested by maximum fracture load in the universal test machine (EMIC DL 1000, EMIC, Brazil) with a 1000 Kgf load cell and analyzed by stereomicroscope (Discovery V20 CarlZeiss, Jena, Germany) and Scanning Electron Microscopy (Inspect S 50, FEI Company, Brno, Czech Republic). Statistical analysis consisted of analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey test 5%. In silico study was performed by Finite Element Analysis (FEA), where the abutment teeth and the prostheses were scanned (Ceramill Map 400, Amann Girrbach) and transferred to the CAD Rhinoceros (version 4.0SR8; McNeel North America, Seattle, WA) for the elaboration of the 3D volumetric model and the analysis test was made in the Ansys Software 19.3 (ANSYS, Canonsburg, PA, USA). The results of resistance to the maximum fracture load were (N): A=163,55; AC=184,48; AR=198,81; ARC=192,24; P=539,99; PC=359,61; PR=541,74 and PRC=608,74. It was found that there was a statistical difference in the presence of reinforcement in both the anterior region (p=0,025) and posterior region groups (p=0,001). The maximum main stress results obtained in the FEA were (MPa): A=53,24/122,40; AR=55,07/117,70; P=33,28/36,18 and PR=28,06/42,87. It was concluded that the incorporation of the silica-nylon mesh increased the resistance to maximum fracture load of the resin-bonded fixed dental prostheses regardless of the area it is located, and the results obtained in the FEA corroborated the results of in vitro test, which allows to conclude that the in silico test was validated(AU)
