[The usefulness of neo- and adjuvant therapy in the treatment of cutaneous melanoma].

One hundred-thirty seven patients with recurrences and metastases of skin melanoma (stage II-III) were divided into four groups in a retrospective study. In group I, there was no adjuvant therapy (47); it was given for 35 +/- 5 days after surgery in group II (31); for 1-2 days after surgery in group III (31). In group IV, neoadjuvant therapy (NAT) was administered by way of preparing for surgery and adjuvant therapy (41). During both procedures, standard CVD regime of cytostatics pre-incubated in patients' autoblood was used: it involved distant gamma-therapy with single focal dose of 3Gy-total dose of 40 isoGy per primary focus and areas of regional metastasizing spread. The rate and nature of tumor progression being similar, signs of skin melanoma generalization correlated with terms of adjuvant therapy administration: in group I, cell dissemination was detected after 8.7 +/- 2.3 months; group II - 9.5 +/- 1.5 months; group III - 18 +/- 3.1 months (p < or = 0.05 groups I and II); group IV - 28 +/- 2.3 months (p < or = 0.05 for all groups), respectively. Use of NAT and urgent adjuvant therapy is expedient at advanced stages of skin melanoma.

[Sweat gland polyneoplasia with extensive metastases].

The paper describes a case of sweat gland polyneoplasia with extensive metastases in a 47-year-old woman, which is indicative of extreme malignancy of this tumor.

[Prognostic significance of some markers in cutaneous melanoma treated with different therapeutic modalities].

The paper discusses the prognostic significance of Ki-67, bcl-2 and HMB-45 markers in skin melanoma in the course of different modalities of chemotherapy involving autoblood. Recurrence-free and 3-year survival among patients receiving autoblood preparations was significantly higher than in controls (p < or = 0.05).

[Pathologoanatomic characteristic of primary and metastatic liver carcinoma].

Results of the analysis of primary and metastatic liver carcinoma, by using autopsied specimens in Rostov-on Don over 20 years are presented. The frequency of hepatocellular carcinoma was 0.4% among the deceased and 3.8% among all malignancies. There was a 1.8-fold rise in the frequency of hepatocellular carcinoma. The increase in the frequency of liver cancer correlated with that of liver cirrhosis on the autopsy specimens. 51.7% of cases of primary liver carcinomas developed in the presence of hepatic cirrhosis of various, including viral, etiology, 14.3% did in the presence of viral hepatitis. The paper presents the results of an immunohistochemical study and characterizes the markers that permit differentiation of primary and metastatic hepatic legions.

[A comparative study of free radical-assisted processes and antioxidant protection of certain areas of liver involvement].

Light sum of chemiluminescence, concentrations of malonic dialdehyde, superoxidismutase and catalase were studied in intact liver tissue. The rate of free radical processes and super-oxidismutase level in liver metastases were lower than in intact tissue. Free radical concentration in the perifocal zone of liver metastases was lower too, which might have stimulated proliferation in metastatic foci.

[Clinico-morpho-sonographic parallels in skin melanoma].

Data on sonographic features of different variants of skin melanoma are presented. Relationship between skin to tumor thickness ratio and invasion depth (Clark) or tumor thickness (Breslow) were found. Tumor extent was effectively identified by ultrasound tomography of primary focus preoperatively. Such patterns of melanoma blood supply as "avascular" (superficial tumor) and "vascular" (node-like tumor) were established. A "tree-like" vascular pattern was typical of melanoma in color Doppler imaging. Tumor with such pattern had poor prognosis.

[Tropical malaria with a fatal outcome in the Rostov region]. / Tropicheskaia maliariia s letal'nym iskhodom v Rostovskoi oblasti.

Epidemiological data on malaria in the Rostov region are presented. An autopsy case of tropical malaria in a 63-year-old man infected in Uganda is described. Treatment was ineffective. Postmortem examination found erythrocytic stasis in the viscera, shysonts, deposits of hemomelanin.

[Generalized Kaposi's sarcoma after allogenic transplantation of cadaver kidney]. / Generalizovannaia sarkoma Kaposhi posle allogennoi transplantatsii trupnoi pochki.

A case report of generalized Kaposi's sarcoma in a 41 year old patient, which developed 3.5 years after allogenic cadaver kidney transplantation with terminal chronic kidney insufficiency caused by chronic intracapillary glomerulonephritis. The peculiar feature was a visceral form of the disease with affection of the stomach, intestinal mesentery and cerebral dura mater without skin manifestations. Clinical signs of Kaposi's sarcoma were absent and were found at the necropsy. Concurrent diseases were highly active hepatitis B and chronic hepatitis C.

[Importance of urgent histological investigation in surgical treatment of biliopancreatoduodenal zone carcinoma]. / Znachenie srochnogo gistologicheskogo issledovaniia v khirurgicheskom lechenii raka biliopankreatoduodenal'noi zony.

Urgent intraoperative investigation allows a surgeon, depending on the morphological conclusion, to conduct individual surgical intervention in the form of anastomosis with penetration into the tissue of the pancreas. The method decreases the rate of surgical complications, improves immediate results of patient treatment and reduces postoperative lethality. This proves the importance of morphology in the surgical treatment of tumours in the zone concerned.

[Pathologic morphology of cervical carcinoma with endolymphatic infusion of immuno-modulating drugs]. / Patomorfoz raka sheiki matki pri éndolimfaticheskom vvedenii immunomoduliruiushchikh preparatov.

Prior to standard therapy, an immunomodulator was administered by endolymphic infusion to 85 patients with cervical carcinoma (T3NxMo), with a view to reinforce treatment. The drug was fed to lymph collectors which were regional and aregional with respect to tumor. Also, the treatment was supplemented with regional infusion of considerable doses of cytostatic mixes. Our morphological evidence pointed to the stimulation of cytostatic effect by immunomodulation.

[Histologic tissue processing in an automated microwave histoprocessor]. / Gistologicheskaia provodka tkanei v avtomaticheskom mikrovolnovom gistoprotsessore.

A new vacuum histoprocessor has been tested as well as new more effective protocols to work with this processor. The device allows histoprocessing of 50 samples simultaneously of surgery, biopsy or autopsy material during 1-1.5 h. Apart from the standard protocols, new protocols with a much lower (5-10 times) expenditure of the chemicals can be implemented due to combination of microwaves and vacuum. Each protocol was tested repeatedly (20 and more times) with stable good quality of microscopic image.

[Superoxide-neutralizing activity of blood serum in cases of primary multiple malignant tumors]. / Superoksidustraniaiushchaia aktivnost' syvorotki krovi bol'nykh pri pervichno-mnozhestvennykh zlokachestvennykh opukholiakh.

An earlier investigation of the superoxide-neutralizing activity of blood serum sampled from patients with primary multiple malignancies detected for the first time RF-proteins as well as their tropism to the target organ from which tumor was removed 2-30 years before. A possible explanation may be that a general reaction of the body presented itself. The present study has led to a conclusion that, in cases of polyneoplasia, successful complex treatment of primary malignancy, carried out however for back, might be masked by RF-protein function: the latter "indicates" the presence of foci of malignancy which are not there any longer.

[Melanoma of the mucosa of the mouth and upper respiratory tract]. / Melanoma slizistoi polosti rta i verkhnikh dykhatel'nykh putei.

3 cases of extracutaneous melanoma are described: those of the alveolar process of maxilla, nose septum and ethmoidal cavity. Clinical symptoms were nose haemorrhages, difficulties of the nose respiration, pains in the month. Histologically melanomas were of a typical structure being formed of the epithelioid and naevus-like cells with high content of melanine with an extra- and intracellular location.
