RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: There is no standard of care for ≥ 3rd-line treatment of metastatic pancreatic adenocarcinoma (PDAC). CBP501 is a novel calmodulin-binding peptide that has been shown to enhance the influx of platinum agents into tumor cells and tumor immunogenicity. This study aimed to (1) confirm efficacy of CBP501/cisplatin/nivolumab for metastatic PDAC observed in a previous phase 1 study, (2) identify combinations that yield 35% 3-month progression-free survival rate (3MPFS) and (3) define the contribution of CBP501 to the effects of combination therapy. METHODS: CBP501 16 or 25 mg/m2 (CBP(16) or CBP(25)) was combined with 60 mg/m2 cisplatin (CDDP) and 240 mg nivolumab (nivo), administered at 3-week intervals. Patients were randomized 1:1:1:1 to (1) CBP(25)/CDDP/nivo, (2) CBP(16)/CDDP/nivo, (3) CBP(25)/CDDP and (4) CDDP/nivo, with randomization stratified by ECOG PS and liver metastases. A Fleming two-stage design was used, yielding a one-sided type I error rate of 2.5% and 80% power when the true 3MPFS is 35%. RESULTS: Among 36 patients, 3MPFS was 44.4% in arms 1 and 2, 11.1% in arm 3% and 33.3% in arm 4. Two patients achieved a partial response in arm 1 (ORR 22.2%; none in other arms). Median PFS and OS were 2.4, 2.1, 1.5 and 1.5 months and 6.3, 5.3, 3.7 and 4.9 months, respectively. Overall, all treatment combinations were well tolerated. Most treatment-related adverse events were grade 1-2. CONCLUSIONS: The combination CBP(25)/(16)/CDDP/nivo demonstrated promising signs of efficacy and a manageable safety profile for the treatment of advanced PDAC. CLINICAL TRIAL REGISTRATION: NCT04953962.

RESUMEN

Cut carrot pieces are popular convenience foods, which enable the use of misshapen or physiologically imperfect produce. Cut carrots curl due to residual stress, which limits their shelf life and causes unnecessary food waste. The aim of this study is to identify the geometrical and environmental factors which have the most influence on their longevity. An analytical equation was developed using compound cylinder solutions, and this was used to define carrot-specific finite element (FE) models. Over 100 longitudinally cut Lancashire Nantes carrot halves were characterized, each was modelled analytically and verified using FE models. This model was evaluated by comparing predicted curvatures to ones experimentally measured over a week. The average radius of curvature decreased from 1.61 to 1.1 m a week after. A 1.32× reduction in the elastic modulus after 7 days was observed. The moisture content reduction relates to 22% weight loss, correlating to the decreasing radius of curvature. Subsequently, carrots are recommended to be stored in humidity-controlled environments. The experimental results from this study match the predictions made using mechanical principles. The research provides a methodology to predict the deformation of cut root vegetables, and the procedure is likely to be applicable to other plant structures.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Evidence on the (long-term) safety of systemic immunomodulating therapies in atopic dermatitis (AD) generated by real-world data is sparse. OBJECTIVES: To describe real-world reported adverse drug reactions (AEs) related to systemic immunomodulating therapy in patients with AD and to compare the incidence rates of AEs with the Summaries of Product Characteristics (SmPCs). METHODS: We conducted an observational prospective multi-centre cohort study, using the TREAT NL registry. All severe AEs, AEs of special interest and serious AEs in adult and paediatric patients on systemic immunomodulating treatment (ciclosporin, methotrexate, azathioprine, mycophenolic acid, dupilumab, tralokinumab, baricitinib and upadacitinib) were assessed. Incidences rates of all (potentially) drug-related AEs were standardized in patient years and compared to the cumulative incidences in the associated SmPCs. RESULTS: We collected 422 patient years of safety data from 266 patients, of whom 129 (48.5%) reported a total of 224 (potentially) drug-related AEs. Compared to dupilumab's SmPC, higher incidence rates were found for four AEs (reported ≥5 times): eosinophilia, blepharitis, dry eyes and head and neck erythema (i.e. dupilumab facial redness). A higher incidence rate of fatigue was found in patients on oral methotrexate in our cohort compared to the SmPC. Two new drug-related AEs (reported ≥5 times) were found in patients on dupilumab, including non-infectious conjunctivitis and meibomian gland dysfunction. CONCLUSIONS: Real-world reported AEs captured in AD patient registries can add information on the estimated incidence of AEs and benefit clinical decision aids. Future studies using data derived from the TREAT NL registry combined with data from other registries within the TREAT Registry Taskforce will provide more information on (rare) AEs associated with immunomodulating therapy in AD patients.

RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: Similar Patient-Reported Outcomes (PROs) at diagnosis for localized prostate cancer among countries may indicate that different treatments are recommended to the same profile of patients, regardless the context characteristics (health systems, medical schools, culture, preferences…). The aim of this study was to assess such comparison. METHODS: We analyzed the EPIC-26 results before the primary treatment of men diagnosed of localized prostate cancer from January 2017 onwards (revised data available up to September 2019), from a multicenter prospective international cohort including seven regions: Australia/New Zealand, Canada, Central Europe (Austria / Czech Republic / Germany), United Kingdom, Italy, Spain, and the United States. The EPIC-26 domain scores and pattern of three selected items were compared across regions (with Central Europe as reference). All comparisons were made stratifying by treatment: radical prostatectomy, external radiotherapy, brachytherapy, and active surveillance. RESULTS: The sample included a total of 13,483 men with clinically localized or locally advanced prostate cancer. PROs showed different domain patterns before treatment across countries. The sexual domain was the most impaired, and the one with the highest dispersion within countries and with the greatest medians' differences across countries. The urinary incontinence domain, together with the bowel and hormonal domains, presented the highest scores (better outcomes) for all treatment groups, and homogeneity across regions. CONCLUSIONS: Patients with localized or locally advanced prostate cancer undergoing radical prostatectomy, EBRT, brachytherapy, or active surveillance presented mainly negligible or small differences in the EPIC-26 domains before treatment across countries. The results on urinary incontinence or bowel domains, in which almost all patients presented the best possible score, may downplay the baseline data role for evaluating treatments' effects. However, the heterogeneity within countries and the magnitude of the differences found across countries in other domains, especially sexual, support the need of implementing the PRO measurement from diagnosis.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: There is a lack of studies establishing the association between allergic rhinitis (AR) and despair, suicidal thinking, and suicide attempts in adolescents and children at a population level. This study aimed to investigate whether there are associations between allergic rhinitis and despair, suicidal thinking, and suicide attempts. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The study utilized data from middle through high school adolescents from 2005-2021 who enrolled in the Korea Youth Risk Behavior Web-based Survey (KYRBS; 1,067,169). We assessed despair, suicidal thinking, and suicide attempts in the context of both non-atopic and atopic AR. Multivariable analysis was used to determine the association of variables. RESULTS: The prevalence of allergic rhinitis was 28.0%. 1,067,169 enrolled participants were included in the final analysis. There were 299,468 individuals with allergic rhinitis and 767,701 without. In the context of AR, adolescents were more likely to have despair [adjusted odds ratio (aOR), 1.16; 95% CI, 1.15-1.17], suicidal thoughts (aOR, 1.12; 95% CI, 1.11-1.13 for model 2), and suicide attempts (aOR, 1.13; 95% CI, 1.10-1.15 for model 2). Individuals with atopic AR were more likely in almost all measures to have despair, suicidal thinking, and suicide attempts than individuals with non-atopic AR. Females with AR were more likely to have suicide attempts and middle school students were more likely to have despair, suicidal thoughts, and suicide attempts. CONCLUSIONS: The results of this study warrant future studies investigating why AR is so closely associated with despair, suicidal ideation, and suicide attempts, with the goal of establishing suicide prevention strategies as well as improving overall mental health for adolescents.

RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: Retinal cavernous hemangioma (RCH) is a rare retinal vascular disease characterized by grape-like clusters of saccular aneurysms, usually unilateral, asymptomatic and non-progressive. The diagnosis is made by multimodal imaging including conventional fluorescein angiography (FA). The recent introduction of swept source optical coherence tomography angiography (SS-OCTA) has allowed new insight into vascular diseases, allowing non-invasive, more precise visualization of retinal and choroidal blood flow, and represents a possible alternative to FA. METHODS: We herein describe two cases of RCH with multimodal imaging, including SS-OCTA, and compare our findings with those previously described. RESULTS: On OCTA, the presence of a draining vessel, a reduction in flow signal in the SCP and DCP, and a fluid level can be observed. CONCLUSION: These OCTA signs are in accordance with those described on conventional fluorescein angiography, allowing this invasive exam to be avoided in typical cases.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Both pesticides and high magnetic fields are suspected to be childhood leukemia risk factors. Pesticides are utilized at commercial plant nurseries, which sometimes occupy the areas underneath high-voltage powerlines. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate whether potential pesticide exposures (intended use, chemical class, active ingredient) utilized at plant nurseries act as an independent childhood leukemia risk factor or as a confounder for proximity to, or magnetic fields exposure from, high-voltage powerlines. METHODS: We conducted a state-wide records-based case-control study for California with 5788 childhood leukemia cases and 5788 controls that examined specific pesticide use, magnetic field exposures and distances to both powerlines and plant nurseries. Exposure assessment incorporated geographic information systems, aerial satellite images, and other historical information. RESULTS: Childhood leukemia risk was potentially elevated for several active pesticide ingredients: permethrin (odds ratio (OR) 1.49, 95% confidence interval (CI) (0.83-2.67), chlorpyrifos (OR 1.29, 95% CI 0.89-1.87), dimethoate (OR 1.79, 95% CI 0.85-3.76), mancozeb (OR 1.41, 95% CI 0.85-2.33), oxyfluorfen (OR 1.41, 95% CI 0.75-2.66), oryzalin (OR 1.60, 95% CI 0.97-2.63), and pendimethalin (OR 1.82, 95% CI 0.81-2.25). Rodenticide (OR 1.42, 95% CI 0.78-2.56) and molluscicide (OR 1.22, 95% CI 0.82-1.81) exposure also presented potentially elevated childhood leukemia risks. Childhood leukemia associations with calculated fields or powerline proximity did not materially change after adjusting for pesticide exposure. Childhood leukemia risks with powerline proximity remained similar when pesticide exposures were excluded. DISCUSSION: Pesticide exposure may be an independent childhood leukemia risk factor. Childhood leukemia risks for powerline proximity and magnetic fields exposure were not explained by pesticide exposure.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: This study assessed the relationship between anti-thrombotics and major adverse cardiovascular events (MACE) in patients with anti-phospholipid syndrome (APS). METHOD: We included 13 947 subjects with APS from the National (Nationwide) Inpatient Sample (NIS) database for 2016-2018, and collected relevant covariates and demographic data using ICD-10 codes. Our two primary outcomes were MACE and death. We performed multivariate logistic regression analysis to assess the impact of various anti-thrombotic regimens on MACE/death in our primary cohort and high-risk subgroups. RESULTS: Patients on anti-coagulants had significantly reduced odds of MACE [odds ratio (OR) 0.68, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.62-0.76, p < 0.001] as well as each of its subcomponents. Those not on any anti-coagulants had significantly increased odds of MACE (OR 1.47, 95% CI 1.24-1.72, p < 0.001). No significant association was found between anti-platelet use and the odds of MACE (p > 0.05). Patients on anti-coagulants were the only class that appeared to have a mortality benefit with reduced odds for death (OR 0.64, 95% CI 0.49-0.84, p = 0.001). In the subgroups at higher risk for MACE (those with atrial fibrillation and thrombocytopenia), full anti-coagulation therapy was also the only anti-thrombotic class that significantly affected the odds of MACE, with a protective effect on MACE, but had no mortality benefit. CONCLUSION: Patients with APS are most likely to benefit from anti-coagulant therapy in reducing MACE. Furthermore, anti-platelets alone or in combination with anti-coagulants are probably not beneficial in MACE reduction and may even increase risk.

RESUMEN

In patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), disease symptoms and pathology typically spread in a predictable spatiotemporal pattern beginning at a focal site of onset and progressing along defined neuroanatomical tracts. Like other neurodegenerative diseases, ALS is characterized by the presence of protein aggregates in postmortem patient tissue. Cytoplasmic, ubiquitin-positive aggregates of TDP-43 are observed in approximately 97% of sporadic and familial ALS patients, while SOD1 inclusions are likely specific to cases of SOD1-ALS. Additionally, the most common subtype of familial ALS, caused by a hexanucleotide repeat expansion in the first intron of the C9orf72 gene (C9-ALS), is further characterized by the presence of aggregated dipeptide repeat proteins (DPRs). As we will describe, cell-to-cell propagation of these pathological proteins tightly correlates with the contiguous spread of disease. While TDP-43 and SOD1 are capable of seeding protein misfolding and aggregation in a prion-like manner, C9orf72 DPRs appear to induce (and transmit) a 'disease state' more generally. Multiple mechanisms of intercellular transport have been described for all of these proteins, including anterograde and retrograde axonal transport, extracellular vesicle secretion, and macropinocytosis. In addition to neuron-to-neuron transmission, transmission of pathological proteins occurs between neurons and glia. Given that the spread of ALS disease pathology corresponds with the spread of symptoms in patients, the various mechanisms by which ALS-associated protein aggregates propagate through the central nervous system should be closely examined.

RESUMEN

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a neurodegenerative disease with an average age-of-onset of ∼60 years and is usually fatal within 2-5 years of diagnosis. Mouse models based upon single gene mutations do not recapitulate all ALS pathological features. Environmental insults may also contribute to ALS, and ß-N-methylamino-L-alanine (BMAA) is an environmental toxin linked with an increased risk of developing ALS. BMAA, along with cycasin, are hypothesized to be the cause of the Guam-ALS epicenter of the 1950s. We developed a multihit model based on low expression of a dominant familial ALS TDP-43 mutation (Q331K) and chronic low-dose BMAA exposure. Our two-hit mouse model displayed a motor phenotype absent from either lesion alone. By LC/MS analysis, free BMAA was confirmed at trace levels in brain, and were as high as 405 ng/mL (free) and 208 ng/mL (protein-bound) in liver. Elevated BMAA levels in liver were associated with dysregulation of the unfolded protein response (UPR) pathway. Our data represent initial steps towards an ALS mouse model resulting from combined genetic and environmental insult.

RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: Clinical expression of cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection is numerous and depends on the immune status of the host. In immunocompromised patients, CMV disease corresponds to reactivation of the virus with tissue damage responsible for significant morbidity and mortality. In immunocompetent adults, primary CMV infection is usually asymptomatic but may rarely result in severe organ damage. OBSERVATION: We report the case of a 28-year-old man, considered immunocompetent and without medical history, presenting with a primary CMV infection revealed by a severe protein-losing gastroenteropathy (serum albumin level: 18.9g/L). The CT scan showed a gastro-duodeno-jejuno-ileitis pattern. Upper intestinal endoscopy revealed diffuse ulcerated and congestive gastritis predominantly in the fundus. Histological analysis of the biopsies showed no viral inclusion and no immunohistochemical staining reaction, but a high viral load (5.61 log). Treatment was symptomatic associated with anticoagulation due to the major hypoalbuminemia. The patient slowly recovered, and normal clinical examination and blood tests were observed two months after the onset of symptoms. CONCLUSION: Severe CMV organ involvement in the immunocompetent patient is very rare but potentially serious. Digestive involvement complicated by exudative enteropathy is possible. Evolution is usually favorable without the need for antiviral treatment.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to describe the characteristics and prognostic factors of pediatric uveitis in a French university referral hospital. METHODS: We performed a retrospective study of all cases of all pediatric uveitis seen at our institution over a 7-year period. RESULTS: A total of 141 eyes of 86 children were included. The mean age was 10.7 years, and 61.6% were girls. The uveitis was bilateral in 64.0% of cases. Anterior uveitis (41.0%) and intermediate uveitis (32.0%) were the most frequent forms. The most frequent etiologies were idiopathic (27.9%), juvenile idiopathic arthritis (25.6%) and pars planitis (18.6%). During the follow-up period, systemic corticosteroids were received by 43.0% of children, immunosuppressive drugs by 31.4% and biological agents by 18.6%. At the final examination, complications were present in 67.0% of patients: 18.0% had cataracts, and 11.3% had intraocular hypertension. Posterior synechiae were present in 27.6% of eyes, optic disc edema in 10.5% and macular edema in 16.2%. At the last visit, visual acuity was better than 20/200 in 97.0% of cases. The presence of band keratopathy, cataract or glaucoma was an independent predictor of impaired visual outcomes at follow-up. CONCLUSION: Juvenile idiopathic arthritis is one of the most frequent and severe pediatric uveitides. Close monitoring and early treatment could prevent complications.

RESUMEN

AIMS: As the US population continues to age, oncological strategies and outcomes for soft tissue sarcomas (STSs) should continue to be examined for varying age groups. The aim of this study was analyse and compare treatment strategies and oncological outcomes for octogenarian patients with STSs. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data from the Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER) national database were used. Varying treatment modalities were studied when utilised for specific tumour staging with respect to the eighth edition of the American Joint Committee on Cancer. RESULTS: In total, 24 666 patients were included for analysis, where 3341 (14%) were 80 years old or older. The octogenarian group was diagnosed with more advanced disease (stages II-IV), relative to their younger counterparts (85% versus 75%, P < 0.001). However, a smaller proportion of the older patients underwent surgical resection (74% versus 86%, P < 0.001). Likewise, the octogenarians received less chemotherapy (4% versus 21%, P < 0.001) and radiotherapy (29% versus 42%, P = 0.010). Surgical resection and chemotherapy significantly improved overall survival for those older patients with stage II STS, whereas surgical resection and radiotherapy improved mortality in this cohort with both stage III and IV STS. Overall survival at 1 and 5 years of follow-up was lower within the octogenarian group compared with the younger group (1 year: 68% versus 88%, P < 0.001 and 5 years: 7% versus 58%, P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Octogenarian patients, in most cases, are diagnosed with stage III or metastatic disease. Surgical resection of the primary tumour was beneficial in both age cohorts, with radiotherapy correlating to better overall survival when used in those patients with higher stage STS. Chemotherapy was associated with better mortality in the younger cohort with respect to tumour stage. The octogenarian overall survival at 1 and 5 years was lower than for younger patients.

RESUMEN

Abstract Ri chicken is the most popular backyard chicken breed in Vietnam, but little is known about the growth curve of this breed. This study compared the performances of models with three parameters (Gompertz, Brody, and Logistic) and models containing four parameters (Richards, Bridges, and Janoschek) for describing the growth of Ri chicken. The bodyweight of Ri chicken was recorded weekly from week 1 to week 19. Growth models were fitted using minpack.lm package in R software and Akaike's information criterion (AIC), Bayesian information criterion (BIC), and root mean square error (RMSE) were used for model comparison. Based on these criteria, the models having four parameters showed better performance than the ones with three parameters, and the Richards model was the best one for males and females. The lowest and highest value of asymmetric weights (α) were obtained by Bridges and Brody models for each of sexes, respectively. Age and weight estimated by the Richard model were 8.46 and 7.51 weeks and 696.88 and 487.58 g for males and for females, respectively. Differences in the growth curves were observed between males and female chicken. Overall, the results suggested using the Richards model for describing the growth curve of Ri chickens. Further studies on the genetics and genomics of the obtained growth parameters are required before using them for the genetic improvement of Ri chickens.

Growth models were fitted using minpack.lm package in R software and Akaikes information criterion (AIC), Bayesian information criterion (BIC), and root mean square error (RMSE) were used for model comparison. Based on these criteria, the models having four parameters showed better performance than the ones with three parameters, and the Richards model was the best one for males and females. The lowest and highest value of asymmetric weights () were obtained by Bridges and Brody models for each of sexes, respectively.

RESUMEN

We evaluated the benefits of heat-stable carotenoid-producing Bacillus marisflavi SH8 spores individually and in combination with non-pigmented Bacillus subtilis SH23 spores on growth, colour change, nutritional content, innate immunity, and gut microbiota of white-leg shrimp. White-leg shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei; n = 30 per tank; 2 tanks per group) were provided feed without (control group) or with SH8, SH23, or mixed spores (total, 1 × 106 cfu/g pellet) for 28 d. The SH8 and SH8-23 combination groups had significantly higher specific growth rates (9.6 and 11.0%), improved red-colour score (4 scores), astaxanthin concentration (1.8- and 2.3-fold), lipid contents (30 and 50%), and superoxidase dismutase activity (8.5 and 12.3%) than that of the control group. Analysis of shrimp's gut microbiome using 16S rRNA metagenome sequencing revealed increased abundance of four useful species and reduced abundance of four harmful species in the combination group than in the control group. Heat-stable Bacillus spore combination improved growth parameters, nutrient content, red-colour score, live counts, and abundance of useful bacteria in the gut of L. vannamei. This is the first study to show the benefits of combining highly heat-stable pigmented and non-pigmented Bacillus spores and their possible mechanisms in a shrimp model.

RESUMEN

Background: Adverse incidents are well studied within acute care settings, less so within aged care homes. The aim of this scoping review was to define the types of adverse incidents studied in aged care homes and highlight strengths, gaps, and challenges of this research. Methods: An expanded definition of adverse incidents including physical, social, and environmental impacts was used in a scoping review based on the PRISMA Extension for Scoping Reviews Checklist. MEDLINE, CINAHL, and EBSCOhost were searched for English language, peer-reviewed studies conducted in aged care home settings between 2000 and 2020. Forty six articles across 12 countries were identified, charted, and analyzed using descriptive statistics and narrative summary methods. Results: Quantitative studies (n = 42, 91%) dominated adverse incidents literature. The majority of studies focused on physical injuries (n = 29, 63%), with fewer examining personal/interpersonal (15%) and environmental factors (22%). Many studies did not describe the country's aged care system (n = 26, 56%). Only five studies (11%) included residents' voices. Discussion: This review highlights a need for greater focus on resident voices, qualitative research, and interpersonal/environmental perspectives in adverse event research in aged care homes. Addressing these gaps, future research may contribute to better understanding of adverse incidents within this setting.

RESUMEN

Chronic pain is associated with dysfunctional cortical excitability. Research has identified altered intracortical motor cortex excitability in Chronic Lower Back Pain (CLBP). However, research identifying the specific intracortical changes underlying CLBP has been met with inconsistent findings. In the present case-control study, we examined intracortical excitability of the primary motor cortex using transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) in individuals with CLBP. Twenty participants with CLBP (Mage = 54.45 years, SDage = 15.89 years) and 18 age- and gender-matched, pain-free controls (M = 53.83, SD = 16.72) were included in this study. TMS was applied to the hand motor area of the right hemisphere and motor evoked potentials (MEPs) were recorded from the first dorsal interosseous muscle of the contralateral hand. Resting motor threshold (rMT) and MEP amplitude were measured using single-pulse stimulation. Short interval intracortical inhibition (SICI) and intracortical facilitation (ICF) were assessed using paired-pulse stimulation. Individuals with CLBP had significantly higher rMT (decreased corticospinal excitability) and lower ICF compared to controls. No significant differences were found in MEP amplitude and SICI. These findings add to the growing body of evidence that CLBP is associated with deficits in intracortical modulation involving glutamatergic mechanisms.

RESUMEN

Understanding recharge in the Mekong Delta is critical for the delta's groundwater resources, and requires the investigation of recharge processes at the local scale. In this study of the north eastern area of the Mekong Delta, time-series of environmental tracer data (δ18O, δ2H, major ions and 3H) and markers of rural pollution (NH4 and NO3) were used to highlight localized recharge and impacts on groundwater quality. Results highlighted new hydrological insights into recharge processes, including that the Pleistocene aquifer receives recent recharge (< 60 years), predominantly during high rainfall months (> 100 mm/month). However, due to shallow clay layers there are significant spatial variations in these recharge processes, which were observed in the seasonal fluctuation of groundwater δ18O values in groundwater. Wet season δ18O changes ranged from below analytical uncertainty (≤ 0.10 ‰) to up to 0.56 ‰, and the calculated fraction of rainfall contribution to the aquifer is ≤5 % to 16 %. Rainfall recharge via the acrisol soils results in low groundwater EC (20-55 µS/cm), acidic groundwater (pH 3.6-5.6), and may also have resulted in the low groundwater NO3 concentrations (≤ 5.3 mg NO3/L) at many sites due to adsorption, therefore delaying not reducing NO3 contamination. Site specific variations in nitrogen processes includes increased NO3 (to 29.7 mg/L) from fertiliser transfers or nitrification, and increased NH4 (to 1.4 mg/L) likely due to the recharge of irrigation waters. Unlike other recharge areas across the northern Mekong Delta, this north-eastern region provides a groundwater resource unaffected by arsenic contamination. Therefore, these results should inform on priority areas for protection from further contamination by rural anthropogenic activities.
