RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The potential neuroprotective effects of regular physical activity on brain structure are unclear, despite links between activity and reduced dementia risk. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relationships between regular moderate to vigorous physical activity and quantified brain volumes on magnetic resonance neuroimaging. METHODS: A total of 10,125 healthy participants underwent whole-body MRI scans, with brain sequences including isotropic MP-RAGE. Three deep learning models analyzed axial, sagittal, and coronal views from the scans. Moderate to vigorous physical activity, defined by activities increasing respiration and pulse rate for at least 10 continuous minutes, was modeled with brain volumes via partial correlations. Analyses adjusted for age, sex, and total intracranial volume, and a 5% Benjamini-Hochberg False Discovery Rate addressed multiple comparisons. RESULTS: Participant average age was 52.98±13.04 years (range 18-97) and 52.3% were biologically male. Of these, 7,606 (75.1%) reported engaging in moderate or vigorous physical activity approximately 4.05±3.43 days per week. Those with vigorous activity were slightly younger (p < 0.00001), and fewer women compared to men engaged in such activities (p = 3.76e-15). Adjusting for age, sex, body mass index, and multiple comparisons, increased days of moderate to vigorous activity correlated with larger normalized brain volumes in multiple regions including: total gray matter (Partial R = 0.05, p = 1.22e-7), white matter (Partial R = 0.06, p = 9.34e-11), hippocampus (Partial R = 0.05, p = 5.96e-7), and frontal, parietal, and occipital lobes (Partial R = 0.04, p≤1.06e-5). CONCLUSIONS: Exercise-related physical activity is associated with increased brain volumes, indicating potential neuroprotective effects.

RESUMEN

Abdominal fat is increasingly linked to brain health. A total of 10,001 healthy participants were scanned on 1.5T MRI with a short whole-body MR imaging protocol. Deep learning with FastSurfer segmented 96 brain regions. Separate models segmented visceral and subcutaneous abdominal fat. Regression analyses of abdominal fat types and normalized brain volumes were evaluated, controlling for age and sex. Logistic regression models determined the risk of brain total gray and white matter volume loss from the highest quartile of visceral fat and lowest quartile of these brain volumes. This cohort had an average age of 52.9 ± 13.1 years with 52.8% men and 47.2% women. Segmented visceral abdominal fat predicted lower volumes in multiple regions including: total gray matter volume (r = -.44, p<.001), total white matter volume (r =-.41, p<.001), hippocampus (r = -.39, p< .001), frontal cortex (r = -.42, p<.001), temporal lobes (r = -.44, p<.001), parietal lobes (r = -.39, p<.001), occipital lobes (r =-.37, p<.001). Women showed lower brain volumes than men related to increased visceral fat. Visceral fat predicted increased risk for lower total gray matter (age 20-39: OR = 5.9; age 40-59, OR = 5.4; 60-80, OR = 5.1) and low white matter volume: (age 20-39: OR = 3.78; age 40-59, OR = 4.4; 60-80, OR = 5.1). Higher subcutaneous fat is related to brain volume loss. Elevated visceral and subcutaneous fat predicted lower brain volumes and may represent novel modifiable factors in determining brain health.

RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: This study was conducted to identify the self-reported communicable diseases (CDs) rate and associated factors among ethnic minority populations in Vietnam. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study of 6912 ethnic minority participants from 12 provinces located in four socioeconomic regions in Vietnam. A total of 4985 participants were included in the final analysis. We used a structured questionnaire to collect information on self-reported CDs and socio-demographic information. RESULTS: The results showed that the prevalence of self-reported CDs was 5.7% (95% CI: 5.0-6.4%). Ethnicity was shown to have an independently significant correlation to self-reported CDs. The Cham Ninh Thuan, Tay, Dao and Gie Trieng ethnic populations had significantly higher odds of self-reported CDs than those of La Hu ethnicity (OR = 47.1, 6.3, 5.6, and 6.5, respectively). Older people and males had significantly higher odds of having CDs than younger and females. CONCLUSION: Our findings recommend conducting ethnic-specific interventions to diminish the incidence of CDs.

RESUMEN

This study aims to estimating the prevalence of type 2 diabetes and prediabetes among adult from 30 to 69 years old and assess the association of risk factor with the conditions. A total of 5244 aged 30 to 69 years old were participated in this cross-sectional study, using nationally representative sampling frame. All participants were taking blood sample to measure fasting blood glucose level and 2-hour postload oral glucose tolerance test by National Hospital of Endocrinology, Vietnam. Multinomial logistic regressions with baseline-category logit models were conducted to identify factors associated with diabetes and prediabetes among respondents. The prediabetes prevalence was in 17.9% and diabetes in 7.3%. Patients who were male (reference group vs female OR = 0.79; 95% CI: 0.64, 0.97), in the 50 to 59 years old group (OR = 1.60; 95% CI: 1.28, 2.00), have hypertension and WHR risk have higher prevalence to have prediabetes (OR = 1.31; 95% CI: 1.12, 1.53; OR = 1.37; 95% CI: 1.11, 1.70, respectively). Male patients (reference group vs female OR = 0.62; 95% CI: 0.45, 0.84), patients who were in 40 to 49; 50 to 59; 60 to 69 years old, those who were housewife (OR = 2.17; 95% CI: 1.43, 3.28; OR = 2.85; 95% CI: 1.91, 4.27; OR = 3.12; 95% CI: 2.08, 4.69; OR = 1.71; 95% CI: 1.22, 2.40, respectively). Diabetes have significant associated with participants have hypertension (OR = 1.19; 95% CI: 1.72, 2.70). The common factor directly related to prediabetes and diabetes in both genders is age. Other factors directly associated with prediabetes and diabetes include BMI, WHR, hypertension, educational level, and job.

RESUMEN

The availability of adapted phantoms mimicking different body parts is fundamental to establishing the stability and reliability of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) methods. The primary purpose of such phantoms is the mimicking of physiologically relevant, contrast-creating relaxation times T1 and T2. For the head, frequently examined by MRI, an anthropomorphic design of brain phantoms would imply the discrimination of gray matter and white matter (WM) within defined, spatially distributed compartments. Multichannel extrusion printing allows the layer-by-layer fabrication of multiple pastelike materials in a spatially defined manner with a predefined shape. In this study, the advantages of this method are used to fabricate biphasic brain phantoms mimicking MR relaxation times and anthropomorphic geometry. The printable ink was based on purely naturally derived polymers: alginate as a calcium-cross-linkable gelling agent, agarose, ι-carrageenan, and GdCl3 in different concentrations (0-280 µmol kg-1) as the paramagnetic component. The suggested inks (e.g., 3Alg-1Agar-6Car) fulfilled the requirements of viscoelastic behavior and printability of large constructs (>150 mL). The microstructure and distribution of GdCl3 were assessed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). In closely monitored steps of technological development and characterization, from monophasic and biphasic samples as printable inks and cross-linked gels, we describe the construction of large-scale phantom models whose relaxation times were characterized and checked for stability over time.

RESUMEN

Administrative staff at healthcare facilities, who are not either doctors or nurses, coordinate, facilitate patient care, and account for 18-20% of human resources in hospitals. Their contribution to the value chain of healthcare service is crucial, but they are not well recognized either by hospital managers and healthcare staff or by patients. Low recognition may cause low job motivation and repeated tasks may cause boredom for them. Our study aimed to assess the level of job motivation among administrative staff in 2 hospitals of Ho Chi Minh city, Vietnam, and explore the influencing factors to job motivation. The exploratory mixed methods design was used in our study with an initial quantitative study with a designed questionnaire and then followed by a qualitative study with focus group discussions. The job motivation index of the administrative staff in our study was not high (4.0). Positive factors were extra income, higher education, healthcare benefits, and a good working environment. Negative factors were low salary index, less chance of higher education, and no separated key performance indicator criteria. The low job motivation index of the administrative staff at public hospitals in our study warns of the negative impact on hospital income in terms of patient satisfaction. In the future, hospitals should have a new strategy in human resource management specifically for administrative staff by maintaining the positive factors and step-by-step overcome the negative factors such as developing separated key performance indicator criteria.

RESUMEN

Rice ragged stunt virus (RRSV) is one of the most damaging viruses of the rice culture area in south and far-eastern Asia. To date, no genetic resistance has been identified and only expensive and non-environmentally friendly chemical treatments are deployed to fight this important disease. Non-chemical approaches based on RNA-silencing have been developed as resistance strategies against viruses. Here, we optimized classical miRNA and siRNA-based strategies to obtain efficient and durable resistance to RRSV. miRNA-based strategies are involved in producing artificial miRNA (amiR) targeting viral genomes in plants. Classically, only one amiR is produced from a single construct. We demonstrated for the first time that two amiRs targeting conserved regions of RRSV genomes could be transgenically produced in Nicotiana benthamiana and in rice for a single precursor. Transgenic rice plants producing either one or two amiR were produced. Despite efficient amiR accumulations, miRNA-based strategies with single or double amiRs failed to achieve efficient RRSV resistance in transformed rice plants. This suggests that this strategy may not be adapted to RRSV, which could rapidly evolve to counteract them. Another RNA-silencing-based method for viral resistance concerns producing several viral siRNAs targeting a viral fragment. These viral siRNAs are produced from an inverted repeat construct carrying the targeted viral fragment. Here, we optimized the inverted repeat construct using a chimeric fragment carrying conserved sequences of three different RRSV genes instead of one. Of the three selected homozygous transgenic plants, one failed to accumulate the expected siRNA. The two other ones accumulated siRNAs from either one or three fragments. A strong reduction of RRSV symptoms was observed only in transgenic plants expressing siRNAs. We consequently demonstrated, for the first time, an efficient and environmentally friendly resistance to RRSV in rice based on the siRNA-mediated strategy.

RESUMEN

Objectives: Informal caregivers' (ICGs') knowledge has substantial influence on the quality of caregiving. This study aims to identify caregivers' perceived knowledge status and analyse associations between their characteristics and perceived knowledge on how to care for individuals with type-2 diabetes (T2D). Study design: Cross-sectional study. Methods: Data were collected using a face-to-face survey with ICGs and perceived knowledge was evaluated on the 5-point Likert scale (ranging from 0 to 4). Results: Between April and July 2019, 1238 eligible ICGs were enrolled in the study. The mean age of participants was 48.3 years, about half (48.8%) were males and the majority (83.3%) were spouses or children of the person they cared for. ICGs mean knowledge score on overall activities was 2.48 (SD = 0.90); the highest score was seen for diet preparation (2.74 ± 0.85) and lowest for foot care (1.76 ± 1.45). Multivariate analyses showed that the following ICG characteristics were significantly more likely to result in a low level of T2D-related knowledge (mean score ≤2): age <40 years, educational level below high school, farming occupation, low economic status and caring for an individual with mild or moderate T2D. Conclusions: The level of perceived knowledge on T2D among ICGs was particularly low for the care of T2D complications. Development of targeted and tailored educational interventions for ICGs is recommended.

RESUMEN

Health insurance reform for children younger than 6 years of age was implemented in 2005. The study aimed to describe the health insurance card status, health care services use, and associated factors. The cross-sectional study was conducted with 210 Hmong mothers of children younger than 6 years of age, and of those, 118 mothers having an ill child in the previous 4 weeks were selected in this study. Descriptive statistics and multiple logistic regression were applied to predict the associated factors. In all, 42.9% of children had health insurance cards and 45.8% ill children accessed public health facilities. The factors included children's age, mothers' knowledge of the free health care policy, mothers' knowledge about one sign of lung infection of their children associated with health insurance status, and health care services use. In conclusion, the 2005 reform of child health insurance policy has brought a modest impact on insurance coverage of children younger than 6 years of age and health care services use. Mothers' knowledge of free health care policy should be improved.

RESUMEN

Recent advances of 3D acquisition devices have enabled large-scale acquisition of 3D scene data. Such data, if completely and well annotated, can serve as useful ingredients for a wide spectrum of computer vision and graphics works such as data-driven modeling and scene understanding, object detection and recognition. However, annotating a vast amount of 3D scene data remains challenging due to the lack of an effective tool and/or the complexity of 3D scenes (e.g. clutter, varying illumination conditions). This paper aims to build a robust annotation tool that effectively and conveniently enables the segmentation and annotation of massive 3D data. Our tool works by coupling 2D and 3D information via an interactive framework, through which users can provide high-level semantic annotation for objects. We have experimented our tool and found that a typical indoor scene could be well segmented and annotated in less than 30 minutes by using the tool, as opposed to a few hours if done manually. Along with the tool, we created a dataset of over a hundred 3D scenes associated with complete annotations using our tool. Both the tool and dataset will be available at http://scenenn.net.

RESUMEN

A wide range of techniques and methods are actively invented by clinicians and scientists who are dedicated to the field of musculoskeletal tissue regeneration. Biological, chemical, and physiological factors, which play key roles in musculoskeletal tissue development, have been extensively explored. However, physical stimulation is increasingly showing extreme importance in the processes of osteogenic and chondrogenic differentiation, proliferation and maturation through defined dose parameters including mode, frequency, magnitude, and duration of stimuli. Studies have shown manipulation of physical microenvironment is an indispensable strategy for the repair and regeneration of bone and cartilage, and biophysical cues could profoundly promote their regeneration. In this article, we review recent literature on utilization of physical stimulation, such as mechanical forces (cyclic strain, fluid shear stress, etc.), electrical and magnetic fields, ultrasound, shock waves, substrate stimuli, etc., to promote the repair and regeneration of bone and cartilage tissue. Emphasis is placed on the mechanism of cellular response and the potential clinical usage of these stimulations for bone and cartilage regeneration.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: The Vietnamese government is committed to universal health care largely through social health insurance. The near-poor population is entitled to subsidized but not free insurance under this scheme, but remains under-represented compared to other groups. The aims of this research were to estimate the health insurance coverage of the near-poor in rural Vietnam and identify the individual and household factors associated with health insurance status. METHODS: Rates of health insurance coverage were estimated from district-level administrative data. A cross-sectional survey was conducted in a representative sample of 2000 near-poor in Cao Lanh district, Dong Thap province, Vietnam. Face-to-face interviews were conducted with a standardized questionnaire. Multiple logistic regression was applied to identify the factors associated with insurance status. RESULTS: The insurance coverage of the near-poor in the selected communities was 20.3%. Enrollment in the health insurance scheme was significantly associated with poor health status (OR = 4.8, 95% CI = 2.4-9.8), good knowledge of health insurance (OR = 4.6, 95% CI = 3.4-6.2), interest in health insurance (OR = 30.1, 95% CI = 11.6-78.0), and the perceived cost of the insurance premium (OR = 2.4, 95% CI = 1.7-3.6). CONCLUSIONS: The cost of insurance premiums is a barrier to enrollment. Information, education and communication campaigns together with modified insurance scheme for the near-poor are necessary to enhance insurance coverage in Vietnam.

RESUMEN

In Vietnam, the two main viruses that cause disease in rice are the Rice grassy stunt virus (RGSV) and the Rice ragged stunt virus (RRSV). Outbreaks of these two viruses have dramatically decreased rice production in Vietnam. Because natural resistance genes are unknown, an RNAi strategy may be an alternative method to develop resistance to RGSV and RRSV. However, this strategy will be efficient only if putative silencing suppressors encoded by the two viruses are neutralized. To identify these suppressors, we used the classical green fluorescent protein (GFP) agroinfiltration method in Nicotiana benthamiana. Then, we investigated the effects of viral candidate proteins on GFP expression and GFP siRNA accumulation and their interference with the short- or long-range signal of silencing. RGSV genes s2gp1, s5gp2, and s6gp1 and RRSV genes s5gp1, s6gp1, s9gp1, and s10gp1 were selected for viral silencing suppressor investigation according to their small molecular weight, the presence of cysteines, or the presence of a GW motif in related protein products. We confirmed that protein p6 of RRSV displays mild silencing suppressor activity and affects long-range silencing by delaying the systemic silencing signal. In addition, we identified two new silencing suppressors that displayed mild activity: p2 of RGSV and p9 of RRSV.

RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: Adipose-derived stem cells (ADSCs) have been isolated, expanded, and applied in the treatment of many diseases. ADSCs have also been used to treat injured articular cartilage. However, there is controversy regarding the treatment efficiency. We considered that ADSC transplantation with activated platelet-rich plasma (PRP) may improve injured articular cartilage compared with that of ADSC transplantation alone. In this study, we determined the role of PRP in ADSC transplantation to improve the treatment efficiency. METHODS: ADSCs were isolated and expanded from human adipose tissue. PRP was collected and activated from human peripheral blood. The effects of PRP were evaluated in vitro and in ADSC transplantation in vivo. In vitro, the effects of PRP on ADSC proliferation, differentiation into chondrogenic cells, and inhibition of angiogenic factors were investigated at three concentrations of PRP (10%, 15% and 20%). In vivo, ADSCs pretreated with or without PRP were transplanted into murine models of injured articular cartilage. RESULTS: PRP promoted ADSC proliferation and differentiation into chondrogenic cells that strongly expressed collagen II, Sox9 and aggrecan. Moreover, PRP inhibited expression of the angiogenic factor vascular endothelial growth factor. As a result, PRP-pretreated ADSCs improved healing of injured articular cartilage in murine models compared with that of untreated ADSCs. CONCLUSION: Pretreatment of ADSCs with PRP is a simple method to efficiently apply ADSCs in cartilage regeneration. This study provides an important step toward the use of autologous ADSCs in the treatment of injured articular cartilage.

RESUMEN

Rice grassy stunt virus (RGSV, Tenuivirus) recently emerged on rice in Vietnam, causing high yield losses during 2006-2009. The genetic diversity of RGSV is poorly documented. In this study, the two genes encoded by each ambisense segment RNA3 and RNA5 of RGSV isolates from six provinces of South Vietnam were sequenced. P3 and Pc3 (RNA3) have unknown function, P5 (RNA5) encodes the putative silencing suppressor, and Pc5 (RNA5) encodes the nucleocapsid protein (N). The sequences of 17 Vietnamese isolates were compared with reference isolates from North and South Philippines. The average nucleotide diversity among the isolates was low. We confirmed a higher variability of RNA3 than RNA5 and Pc3 than P3. No relationships between the genetic diversity and the geographic distribution of RGSV isolates could be ascertained, likely because of the long-distance migration of the insect vector. This data will contribute to a better understanding on the RGSV epidemiology in South Vietnam, a prerequisite for further management of the disease and rice breeding for resistance.
