Background: Post-operative atrial fibrillation (POAF) is a frequent complication after cardiac surgery. It is associated with prolonged hospital stay, increased morbidity, mortality rate and economic costs. The aim of the study was to determine the association between the values of Galectin3 and N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (NTproBNP) with POAF after cardiac surgery. Methods: A prospective study enrolled patients aged 18-85 years old admitted due to elective coronary artery bypass graft surgery (CABG) or CABG + aortic valve replacement. The plasma Galectin-3 and NT-proBNP levels were measured one day before surgery postoperative days 1 and 7. Results: The study included a total of 103 patients. POAF was registered in 45 patients. The mean age of patients in whom POAF occurred was 68.8 years, while other patients' mean age was 65.5 years (p=0.028). Patients with POAF did not differ from the group without POAF in the values of Galectin-3 and NT-proBNP preoperatively as well as on the first and seventh postoperative days. Changes in Galectin-3 levels on the first postoperative day had statistically significant value for predicting POAF (AUC=0.627 0.509-0.745 , p<0.05). Decrease in Galectin-3 level con centration on the first postoperative day over 17% increases the risk of developing AF. Conclusions: Preoperative values of Galectin-3 and NTproBNP are not associated with POAF development after cardiac surgery.

PURPOSE: The study aimed to determine the typical clearance and volume of distribution values of tamsulosin in patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), and to identify factors with a measurable impact on the drug's elimination. METHODS: This open-label, single-arm population pharmacokinetic study involved 65 adult men with BPH who had been on tamsulosin therapy for at least seven days. The steady-state serum concentrations of tamsulosin were measured using liquid chromatography-tandem quadrupole mass spectrometry. Population pharmacokinetic parameters, their variability, and influencing factors were estimated based on a two-compartment pharmacokinetic model using NONMEM software. RESULTS: The estimated tamsulosin clearance in BPH patients was 0.719 L/h, and the steady-state volume of distribution was 32 L. Neither renal nor liver function parameters had a statistically significant effect on tamsulosin clearance. However, a positive correlation was observed between hemoglobin levels and tamsulosin clearance in the BPH patient cohort. CONCLUSION: Our investigation reveals significant associations between tamsulosin pharmacokinetics and specific characteristics of patients with lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) due to BPH. The study highlights that tamsulosin clearance is associated with hemoglobin levels in patients with LUTS/BPH. This study underscores the importance of considering patient-specific factors when managing BPH treatment with tamsulosin, emphasizing associations rather than causative relationships.

AIM: To investigate the factors affecting metformin concentrations after chronic administration in patients with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), focusing on the pharmacokinetic variability and its implications for personalized therapy. METHODS: This study enrolled 53 PCOS patients undergoing long-term metformin treatment at the Clinic for Gynecology and Obstetrics in Nis, Serbia, from February to December 2019. Pharmacokinetic parameters were measured from blood samples, and metformin concentrations were determined with validated analytical techniques. RESULTS: There was a significant variability in metformin concentrations among PCOS patients, with body mass index (BMI) identified as a major influencing factor. Higher BMI was associated with lower plasma metformin levels, a finding suggesting an altered pharmacokinetic profile in obese patients. CONCLUSIONS: This study highlights the critical role of BMI in influencing metformin pharmacokinetics in PCOS patients and underscores the need for personalized treatment strategies in patients with PCOS.

Research background: The consumption of whole grain cereal flour contributes to increased intake of dietary fibre and phenolic compounds beneficial to human health. However, whole grain flour also has some disadvantages, such as poor baking properties and lower technological quality. Applying ultrasonic and hydrothermal treatments can provide new opportunities to modify and improve the baking and biofunctionality of flour as well as the quality of baked goods. Experimental approach: The whole grain flour samples of six wheat varieties with different amylose content were studied. The original chemical composition and viscosity profiles of the flour were determined. The flour samples were subjected to ultrasonic treatment at a frequency of 30 kHz and temperature of 40 °C for 10 min and hydrothermal treatment on a magnetic stirrer with heating for 3 min after reaching the boiling point. The treatments were carried out to determine their influence on the studied digestible and antioxidant properties of the flour. A multistep in vitro enzymatic digestibility protocol simulating the digestion process in the human gastrointestinal tract was applied to the untreated and treated whole grain flour samples. Total free phenolic compound content and total antioxidant capacity were also determined. Results and conclusions: Hydrothermal treatment had a positive effect on the digestibility of the whole grain flour, especially in waxy wheat genotypes compared to those with high amylose content, due to the formation of resistant starch. The hydrothermal treatment had an overall negative effect on the antioxidant capacity of the flour samples, while ultrasonic treatment generally increased the analytical values of total free phenolic compounds by enhancing their extractability. These findings can provide valuable information for the development of new whole wheat foods. Novelty and scientific contribution: To the best of our knowledge, this type of study of the effects of ultrasound and hydrothermal treatment on the digestibility and antioxidant properties has not yet been performed on whole wheat flour with different amylose content. Waxy and high-amylose wheat varieties are considered novel raw materials because of their unique properties in bread making, such as improved bread texture and increased dietary fibre content.

BACKGROUND: Galectin-3 (Gal-3) is a biomarker involved in a wide range of diseases including cardiac remodeling following acute myocardial infarction (AMI). Identification of prognostic markers in patients with AMI can guide strategies towards improved survival and quality of life. METHODS: Our study included 59 patients with AMI and a preserved ejection fraction. We determined the Gal-3 plasma concentration within 24 h of chest pain onset from the aortic root, femoral/radial artery, coronary sinus and cubital vein. Major adverse cardiovascular events (MACEs) were evaluated at six months follow-up. RESULTS: MACE at six months post-AMI was recorded in 20 patients (34%). The Gal-3 plasma concentration from the aortic root and the femoral/radial artery were independent predictors of MACE at six months follow-up after the first AMI (OR 1.228; 95%CI: 1.011-1.491; p = 0.038; OR 3.438; 95%CI: 1.275-9.265; p = 0.015). ROC analysis identifies the Gal-3 plasma concentration from the aortic root as a better predictor of MACE or death (cut-off ≥ 10.86 ng/mL; AUC 0.858; 95%CI: 0.744-0.973; p < 0.001) than Gal-3 plasma concentration from the femoral/radial artery (cut-off ≥ 10.18 ng/mL; AUC 0.742; 95%CI: 0.596-0.888; p = 0.006). CONCLUSION: the Gal-3 plasma concentration in patients with AMI determined during coronary angiography, especially from the aortic root, within 24 h after chest pain onset is a valuable biomarker of prognosis at six months follow-up.

Sertraline is one of the most prescribed antidepressants, but its pharmacokinetic (PK) properties are still not completely characterized. Using nonlinear mixed-effects modeling, we examined factors influencing sertraline PK variability in outpatients with major depressive disorder. Blood samples from 53 male and female adults treated with sertraline orally were collected at a steady state. Various demographic and clinical covariates were tested by stepwise regression procedure. We found that sertraline clearance is significantly influenced by serum concentrations of its main metabolite N-desmethylsertraline, whereas clearance of N-desmethylsertraline is affected by both creatinine clearance and drug daily dose. These results were confirmed by the reduction of points dispersion in goodness-of-fit plots for their predicted versus measured concentrations and with bootstrapping analyses. This finding can serve to inform sertraline dosing optimization, especially when changes in kidney function occur in treated individuals, to prevent adverse drug reactions and maximize therapeutic benefits.

Considering the great potential of black soybean seed coat as a source of bioactive compounds, the objective of this study was to investigate the effect of anthocyanin-rich brine from the seed coat on functional properties of pickled baby corn, as well as its sensory properties. Given that the ears of sweet corn, popping corn and semi-flint corn were used for pickling in the pre-pollination phase, the effect of genotype and its growing stage on the chemical composition of Baby corn product was also taken into consideration. The brine of black soybean with a total anthocyanins content of 11,882.9 mg CGE/kg (cyanidin 3-glucoside equivalent) and an antioxidant capacity of 399.5 mmol Trolox Eq/kg determined by QUENCHER method had a positive impact on the functional potential of baby corn products. The content of total anthocyanins in the obtained products ranged from 748.6 to 881.2 mg CGE/kg, the predominant anthocyanin was cyanidin-3-glucoside (184.6 to 247.5 µg/g), while their colour was red. Compared to the commercial sample, baby corn products pickled in the enriched solution had a 26% to 46% and 17% to 26% higher content of total free phenolic compounds and antioxidant capacity, respectively. Contrarily, the control sample had higher sugar and fibre content. As established, pickled popping corn had the best sensory properties.

An anthocyanin-rich blue maize waste product was used for anthocyanin extraction. To preserve bioactive phenolic compounds, a spray-drying technique was employed using conventional wall material maltodextrin (MD), with novel one, hydroxypropyl-ß-cyclodextrin (HPBCD). The obtained spray-dried maize extract (SME) and microencapsulates were analyzed based on physicochemical powder properties, chemical analysis, antioxidant activity, and digestibility. The examined microencapsulates demonstrated good powder properties, exhibited a high powder yield (up to 83%), and had a low moisture content (less than 5%). HPBCD and MD + HPBCD combinations demonstrated superior powder properties in the terms of decreasing the time necessary for rehydration (133.25 and 153.8 s, respectively). The mean average particle diameter ranged from 4.72 to 21.33 µm. DSC analyses signified high powder thermal stability, around 200 °C, related to the increasing preservation with biopolymer addition. The total phenolic and anthocyanin compounds ranged from 30,622 to 32,211 mg CE/kg (CE-catechin equivalents) and from 9642 to 12,182 mg CGE/kg (CGE-cyanidin 3-glucoside equivalents), respectively, associated with good bioactive compound protection. Microencapsulates with both carriers (15% MD and 15% HPBCD) had the highest digestibility (73.63%). Our results indicated that the microencapsulates created with the active ingredient and the wall materials (MD and HPBCD) could protect phenolic compounds/anthocyanins against ABTS radicals (63.53 and 62.47 mmol Trolox Eq/kg, respectively).

A simple HPLC method was developed for the determination of antiplatelet drug ticagrelor (TCG) in blood. Sample preparation and extraction conditions were investigated and optimized. The preparation of blood plasma was investigated by protein precipitation using perchloric acid, methanol, acetonitrile (ACN), and trifluoroacetic acid. Protein precipitation using ACN was found to be the most suitable. Chromatographic separation of TCG was performed on a C18 column with a mobile phase consisting of ACN and 15 mM ammonium acetate buffered at pH 8.0. The method was applied to determine TCG in blood plasma of patients who had a heart attack. Blood samples were collected 1.5 h after the administration of the initial loading dose of the antiplatelet drug. The average concentration of TCG was found to be 0.97 ± 0.53 µg/ml. The developed method proved to be very selective, without interferences from other endogenous substances and the influences of possible coadministered drugs. The limits of detection and quantification estimated by the signal-to-noise ratio in real samples were 0.24 and 0.4 µg/ml, respectively. The developed method is simple and can be easily applied in clinics and emergency cardiac situations after the initial loading dose of TCG in the first few hours of a heart attack.

Heart failure (HF) is the leading cause of hospitalisations worldwide, with only 35% of patients surviving the first 5 years after diagnosis. The pathogenesis of HF with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) is still unclear, impeding the implementation of effective treatments. FK506-binding protein like (FKBPL) and its therapeutic peptide mimetic, AD-01, are critical mediators of angiogenesis and inflammation. Thus, in this study, we investigated-for the first time-FKBPL's role in the pathogenesis and as a biomarker of HFpEF. In vitro models of cardiac hypertrophy following exposure to a hypertensive stimulus, angiotensin-II (Ang-II, 100 nM), and/or AD-01 (100 nM), for 24 and 48 h were employed as well as human plasma samples from people with different forms of HFpEF and controls. Whilst the FKBPL peptide mimetic, AD-01, induced cardiomyocyte hypertrophy in a similar manner to Ang-II (p < 0.0001), when AD-01 and Ang-II were combined together, this process was abrogated (p < 0.01-0.0001). This mechanism appears to involve a negative feedback loop related to FKBPL (p < 0.05). In human plasma samples, FKBPL concentration was increased in HFpEF compared to controls (p < 0.01); however, similar to NT-proBNP and Gal-3, it was unable to stratify between different forms of HFpEF: acute HFpEF, chronic HFpEF and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). FKBPL may be explored for its biomarker and therapeutic target potential in HFpEF.

Preeclampsia is a pregnancy-specific cardiovascular disorder, involving significant maternal endothelial dysfunction. Although inappropriate placentation due to aberrant angiogenesis, inflammation and shallow trophoblast invasion are the root causes of preeclampsia, pathogenic mechanisms are poorly understood, particularly in early pregnancy. Here, we first confirm the abnormal expression of important vascular and inflammatory proteins, FK506-binding protein-like (FKBPL) and galectin-3 (Gal-3), in human plasma and placental tissues from women with preeclampsia and normotensive controls. We then employ a three-dimensional microfluidic placental model incorporating human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs) and a first trimester trophoblast cell line (ACH-3P) to investigate FKBPL and Gal-3 signaling in inflammatory conditions. In human samples, both circulating (n = 17 controls; n = 30 preeclampsia) and placental (n ≥ 6) FKBPL and Gal-3 levels were increased in preeclampsia compared to controls (plasma: FKBPL, p < 0.0001; Gal-3, p < 0.01; placenta: FKBPL, p < 0.05; Gal-3, p < 0.01), indicative of vascular dysfunction in preeclampsia. In our placenta-on-a-chip model, we show that endothelial cells are critical for trophoblast-mediated migration and that trophoblasts effectively remodel endothelial vascular networks. Inflammatory cytokine tumour necrosis factor-α (10 ng/mL) modulates both FKBPL and Gal-3 signaling in conjunction with trophoblast migration and impairs vascular network formation (p < 0.005). Our placenta-on-a-chip recapitulates aspects of inappropriate placental development and vascular dysfunction in preeclampsia.

Preeclampsia is still the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in pregnancy without a cure. There are two phenotypes of preeclampsia, early-onset (EOPE) and late-onset (LOPE) with poorly defined pathogenic differences. This study aimed to facilitate better understanding of the mechanisms of pathophysiology of EOPE and LOPE, and identify specific biomarkers or therapeutic targets. In this study, we conducted an untargeted, label-free quantitative proteomic analyses of plasma samples from pregnant women with EOPE (n = 17) and LOPE (n = 11), and age, BMI-matched normotensive controls (n = 18). Targeted proteomics approach was also employed to validate a subset of proteins (n = 17). In total, there were 26 and 20 differentially abundant proteins between EOPE or LOPE, and normotensive controls, respectively. A series of angiogenic and inflammatory proteins, including insulin-like growth factor-binding protein 4 (IGFBP4; EOPE: FDR = 0.0030 and LOPE: FDR = 0.00396) and inter-alpha-trypsin inhibitor heavy chain H2-4 (ITIH2-4), were significantly altered in abundance in both phenotypes. Through validation we confirmed that ITIH2 was perturbed only in LOPE (p = 0.005) whereas ITIH3 and ITIH4 were perturbed in both phenotypes (p < 0.05). Overall, lipid metabolism/transport proteins associated with atherosclerosis were highly abundant in LOPE, however, ECM proteins had a more pronounced role in EOPE. The complement cascade and binding and uptake of ligands by scavenger receptors, pathways, were associated with both EOPE and LOPE.

Heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) accounts for around 50% of all heart failure cases. It is a heterogeneous condition with poorly understood pathogenesis. Here, we aimed to identify unique pathogenic mechanisms in acute and chronic HFpEF and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). We performed unbiased, comprehensive proteomic analyses of plasma samples from gender- and BMI-matched patients with acute HFpEF (n = 8), chronic HFpEF (n = 9) and HCM (n = 14) using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. Distinct molecular signatures were observed in different HFpEF forms. Clusters of biomarkers differentially abundant between HFpEF forms were predominantly associated with microvascular inflammation. New candidate protein markers were also identified, including leucine-rich alpha-2-glycoprotein 1 (LRG1), serum amyloid A1 (SAA1) and inter-alpha-trypsin inhibitor heavy chain 3 (ITIH3). Our study is the first to apply systematic, quantitative proteomic screening of plasma samples from patients with different subtypes of HFpEF and identify candidate biomarkers for improved management of acute and chronic HFpEF and HCM.

OBJECTIVE: There is a low incidence of the medullary infarctions and sparse data about the vascular territories, as well as a correlation among the anatomic, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and neurologic signs. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Arteries of the 10 right and left sides of the brain stem were injected with India ink, fixed in formalin and microdissected. The enrolled 34 patients with medullary infarctions underwent a neurologic, MRI and Doppler examination. RESULTS: Four types of the infarctions were distinguished according to the involved vascular territories. The isolated medial medullary infarctions (MMIs) were present in 14.7%. The complete MMIs comprised one bilateral infarction (2.9%), whilst the incomplete and partial MMIs were observed in 5.9% and 8.9%, respectively. The anterolateral infarctions (ALMIs) were very rare (2.9%). The complete and incomplete lateral infarctions (LMIs), noted in 35.3%, comprised 11.8% and 23.6%, respectively, that is, the anterior (5.9%), posterior (8.9%), deep (2.9%), and peripheral (5.9%). Dorsal ischemic lesions (DMIs) occurred in 11.8%, either as a complete (2.9%), or isolated lateral (5.9%) or medial infarctions (2.9%). The remaining ischemic regions belonged to various combined infarctions of the MMI, ALMI, LMI and DMI (35.3%). The infarctions most often affected the upper medulla (47.1%), middle (11.8%), or both (29.5%). Several motor and sensory signs were manifested following infarctions, including vestibular, cerebellar, ocular, sympathetic, respiratory and auditory symptoms. CONCLUSIONS: There was a good correlation among the vascular territories, MRI ischemia features, and neurologic findings regarding the medullary infarctions.

Widely consumed thermally processed corn-based foods can have a great contribution to acrylamide dietary intake, thus bearing a high public health risk and requiring attention and application of strategies for its reduction. This paper reviews the literature on the acrylamide content of corn-based food products present in the market around the world. The potential of corn for acrylamide formation due to its content of free asparagine and reducing sugars is described. Human exposure to acrylamide from corn-based foods is also discussed. Background and Objectives: Given the fact that galectin-3 has a predictive significance on the development of myocardial dysfunction after acute myocardial infarction, the aim of our study was to examine potential factors that could be important for the dynamics of the concentration of this biomarker in the early postinfarction period. Materials and Methods: This study included 89 patients with a diagnosis of stable angina pectoris (SAP) or the first non-ST elevation (NSTEMI) or ST-elevation (STEMI) myocardial infarction, who underwent percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). The study group included 23 patients with the first NSTEMI and 42 patients with STEMI, while the control group consisted of 24 patients with SAP hospitalized for elective PCI without a previous MI. All patients had preserved left ventricular ejection fraction. Galectin-3 levels were determined on days 1, 5, and 30 after PCI. The significance of various independent variables as predictors of galectin-3 concentration was analyzed after a series of univariate linear regression modeling in a multivariate linear regression model. Results: The average patients' age was 63.99 ± 9.13 years. Statistically significantly higher values of C-reactive protein were established in STEMI compared to SAP (p < 0.01) or NSTEMI (p < 0.001), whereas WBC count was significantly lower in SAP than in STEMI (p < 0.001) and NSTEMI (p < 0.01) group. Although there were no statistically significant differences in measured galectin-3 concentrations between the examined groups on days 1, 5, and 30 after PCI, HTA, triglyceride level, LA size, treatment with trimetazidine and long-acting nitrates, as well as percentage of LM stenosis and E/A ratio were identified as independent predictors of galectin-3 concentration. Conclusions: In the post-MI period, very early values of galectin-3 correlate mostly with atherosclerosis factors, while on day 30 this biomarker correlates with diastolic dysfunction and "announces" left ventricular remodeling.

BACKGROUND: Preeclampsia is a dangerous cardiovascular disorder of pregnancy that leads to an increased risk of future cardiovascular and metabolic disorders. Much of the pathogenesis and mechanisms involved in cardiac health in preeclampsia are unknown. A novel anti-angiogenic protein, FKBPL, is emerging as having a potential role in both preeclampsia and cardiovascular disease (CVD). Therefore, in this study we aimed to characterise cardiac health and FKBPL regulation in the rat reduced uterine perfusion pressure (RUPP) and a 3D cardiac spheroid model of preeclampsia. METHODS: The RUPP model was induced in pregnant rats and histological analysis performed on the heart, kidney, liver and placenta (n ≥ 6). Picrosirius red staining was performed to quantify collagen I and III deposition in rat hearts, placentae and livers as an indicator of fibrosis. RT-qPCR was used to determine changes in Fkbpl, Icam1, Vcam1, Flt1 and Vegfa mRNA in hearts and/or placentae and ELISA to evaluate cardiac brain natriuretic peptide (BNP45) and FKBPL secretion. Immunofluorescent staining was also conducted to analyse the expression of cardiac FKBPL. Cardiac spheroids were generated using human cardiac fibroblasts and human coronary artery endothelial cells and treated with patient plasma from normotensive controls, early-onset preeclampsia (EOPE) and late-onset preeclampsia (LOPE); n = 3. FKBPL and CD31 expression was quantified by immunofluorescent labelling. RESULTS: The RUPP procedure induced significant increases in blood pressure (p < 0.001), collagen deposition (p < 0.001) and cardiac BNP45 (p < 0.05). It also induced a significant increase in cardiac FKBPL mRNA (p < 0.05) and protein  expression  (p < 0.01). RUPP placentae also exhibited increased collagen deposition and decreased Flt1 mRNA expression (p < 0.05). RUPP kidneys revealed an increase in average glomerular size (p < 0.05). Cardiac spheroids showed a significant increase in FKBPL expression when treated with LOPE plasma (p < 0.05) and a trend towards increased FKBPL expression following treatment with EOPE plasma (p = 0.06). CONCLUSIONS: The rat RUPP model induced cardiac, renal and placental features reflective of preeclampsia. FKBPL was increased in the hearts of RUPP rats and cardiac spheroids treated with plasma from women with preeclampsia, perhaps reflective of restricted angiogenesis and inflammation in this disorder. Elucidation of these novel FKBPL mechanisms in cardiac health in preeclampsia could be key in preventing future CVD.

PURPOSE: Given that it has been reported that type 2 diabetes mellitus may affect the pharmacokinetics of a large number of drugs and that there are still no published population pharmacokinetic (PopPK) analyses in routinely treated patients with hypertension and type 2 diabetes mellitus as comorbid condition, the aim of this study was to determine PK variability of bisoprolol in 70 Serbian patients using the PopPK approach. METHODS: PopPK analysis was conducted using a nonlinear mixed effects model (NONMEM), version 7.3.0 (Icon Development Solutions). In our patients, a total daily dose of bisoprolol ranged from 1.25 to 10 mg. The drug was administrated orally as a single daily dose or in two divided doses per day. RESULTS: A wide range of the drug concentrations were noted (1-103 ng/mL) in the population consisted of the adult patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. From a total of 21 separately assessed covariates, our results indicated that only creatinine clearance could have a potential impact on the variability of the clearance of bisoprolol. CONCLUSION: Routine assessment of renal function should be carried out before the initiation of treatment with bisoprolol in order to individualize the dose and to prevent possible accumulation and adverse drug reactions.

OBJECTIVES: Preeclampsia is a cardiovascular pregnancy complication that occurs in 5-10% of pregnancies and it can lead to a number of pregnancy complications including maternal and foetal death. Long-term, preeclampsia is associated with up to 8-fold increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) for both mothers and their offspring. The lack of mechanistic data in relation to the causes or consequences of preeclampsia has prevented the development of effective therapeutic and monitoring strategies. STUDY DESIGN: This study investigates common underlying mechanisms of preeclampsia and CVD, specifically hypertension and heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF), using "in silico" approach of publicly available datasets. Integrated techniques were designed to mine data repositories and identify relevant biomarkers associated with these three conditions. MAIN OUTCOMES MEASURES: The knowledge base tools were employed that enabled the analysis of these biomarkers to discover potential molecular and biological links between these three conditions. RESULTS: Our bioinformatics "in silico" analyses of the publically available datasets identified 76 common biomarkers between preeclampsia, hypertension and HFpEF. These biomarkers were representative of 29 pathways commonly enriched across the three conditions which were largely related to inflammation, metabolism, angiogenesis, remodelling, haemostasis, apoptosis and the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone (RAAS) system. CONCLUSIONS: This bioinformatics approach uses the wealth of scientific data available in public repositories to gain a deeper understanding of the overlapping pathogenic mechanisms of associated diseases, which could be explored as biomarkers or targets to prevent long-term cardiovascular complications such as hypertension and HFpEF following preeclampsia.

High prevalence of left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) and elevated oxidative stress are associated with poor outcomes in chronic hemodialysis patients. Abnormal left ventriculаr geomеtry and different geometric patterns play an important role as well. Our study analyzed the role of oxidative stress on myocardial remodeling in these patients. Plasma malondialdehyde (MDA), protein carbonyl (PC) content, and total antioxidative capacity (TAC) were investigated in 104 hemodialysis patients together with transthoracic echocardiography. Compared to patients with normal ventricular geometry, patients with LVH had increased MDA and PC plasma concentration. Multivariate analysis demonstrated that protein carbonyls, as biomarkers of oxidative protein modification, were an independent predictor of eccentric hypertrophy (eLVH), including higher LV end-diastolic diameter and LV end-diastolic volume, (ß = 0.32 and ß = 0.28, p < 0.001 for both). The incidence of eLVH increased progressively from the lowest to the highest baseline PC tertile (p < 0.001 for the trend) and the subjects in the former group showed a 76% greater risk of developing eLVH compared to their counterparts. After further adjustment for the potential mediators, PCs carried eLVH odds (95% confidence interval (CI)) of 1.256 (0.998-1.514), per standard deviation increase. High plasma protein carbonyls levels are a significant independent predictor of eccentric LVH in chronic hemodialysis patients.
