RESUMEN

Considering quality of life (QOL) after stroke, car driving is one of the most important abilities for returning to the community. In this study, directed attention and sustained attention, which are thought to be crucial for driving, were examined. Identification of specific brain structure abnormalities associated with post-stroke cognitive dysfunction related to driving ability would help in determining fitness for car driving after stroke. Magnetic resonance imaging was performed in 57 post-stroke patients (51 men; mean age, 63 ± 11 years) who were assessed for attention deficit using a standardized test (the Clinical Assessment for Attention, CAT), which includes a Continuous Performance Test (CPT)-simple version (CPT-SRT), the Behavioral Inattention Test (BIT), and a driving simulator (handle task for dividing attention, and simple and selective reaction times for sustained attention). A statistical non-parametric map (SnPM) that displayed the association between lesion location and cognitive function for car driving was created. From the SnPM analysis, the overlay plots were localized to the right hemisphere during handling the hit task for bilateral sides (left hemisphere damage related to right-side neglect and right hemisphere damage related to left-side neglect) and during simple and selective reaction times (false recognition was related to damage of both hemispheres). A stepwise multiple linear regression analysis confirmed the importance of both hemispheres, especially the right hemisphere, for cognitive function and car driving ability. The present study demonstrated that the right hemisphere has a crucial role for maintaining directed attention and sustained attention, which maintain car driving ability, improving QOL for stroke survivors.

Mood disorders (e.g. depression, apathy, and anxiety) are often observed in stroke patients, exhibiting a negative impact on functional recovery associated with various physical disorders and cognitive dysfunction. Consequently, post-stroke symptoms are complex and difficult to understand. In this study, we aimed to clarify the cross-sectional relationship between mood disorders and motor/cognitive functions in stroke patients. An artificial neural network architecture was devised to predict three types of mood disorders from 36 evaluation indices obtained from functional, physical, and cognitive tests on 274 patients. The relationship between mood disorders and motor/cognitive functions were comprehensively analysed by performing input dimensionality reduction for the neural network. The receiver operating characteristic curve from the prediction exhibited a moderate to high area under the curve above 0.85. Moreover, the input dimensionality reduction retrieved the evaluation indices that are more strongly related to mood disorders. The analysis results suggest a stress threshold hypothesis, in which stroke-induced lesions promote stress vulnerability and may trigger mood disorders.

RESUMEN

A determination procedure of transferable tight-binding parameters of extended Hückel approximation with charge self-consistency is explained, which is applicable to both molecules and crystalline solids. The parameters are adjusted by optimizing evaluation functions, compared with reference results of energy levels or band structure calculated by, for example, the density functional theory. By introducing the evaluation function, the automatic optimization of the parameters for small molecules and clusters is achieved, which makes it easy to determine an accurate parameter set and a wide application of the TB scheme. A practical procedure of parameter optimization is demonstrated for solid-state electrolytes of Li4GeS4 and Li3PS4.

A transferable tight-binding parametrization procedure for extended Hückel approximation is proposed, with the charge self-consistent scheme, that could be applied to the quantum molecular dynamics (MD) simulation for long-time dynamics of large-scale systems. In this procedure, either a target molecule is divided into small molecules or another realistic set of small molecules characterizing chemical bonds in the complicated target molecule is adopted. Then, the parameters for these small molecules are adjusted and compared with reference results of energy levels and wave functions by, for example, density functional theory. Upon application to the large target molecule, these parameters are then readjusted directly in the target molecule. An example is demonstrated with MD simulation applied to the ionic liquid molecule N-methyl-N-propylpiperidinium bis trifluoromethanesulfonyl imide (PP13-TFSI). The origin and stability of HOMO-LUMO gap are discussed.

We investigate the effects of off-diagonal disorder on localization properties in quantum bond percolation networks on cubic lattices, motivated by the finding that the off-diagonal disorder does not always enhance the quantum localization of wavefunctions. We numerically construct a diagram of the 'percolation threshold', distinguishing extended states from localized states as a function of two degrees of disorder, by using the level statistics and finite-size scaling. The percolation threshold increases in a characteristic way on increasing the disorder in the connected bonds, while it gradually decreases on increasing the disorder in the disconnected bonds. Furthermore, the exchange of connected and disconnected bonds induced by the disorder causes a dramatic change of the percolation threshold.

RESUMEN

Recently, research has concentrated on robots that can coexist with people and be of use to them. Such a robot needs to be both safe and flexible. Here, we use a pneumatic actuator as the driving source of a robot hand. We develop a pneumatic actuator driven by low pressure because we consider that the conventional pneumatic actuator is inadequate for the driving source of a robot hand. First, we examine the characteristics of our new pneumatic actuator. Next, we develop a five-fingered robot hand using this pneumatic actuator. The robot hand produced is both safe and flexible. We construct a master-slave system to enable the robot hand to perform the same operations as a human hand. Next, we make a joint model that has one degree of freedom using a pneumatic actuator. We construct a control system for the joint model and verify its control performance.

RESUMEN

We propose a new disorder-induced insulator-metal transition of one-electron states, which may be called the "inverse Anderson transition." We first make a highly degenerated localized states by constructing a three-dimensional periodic system possessing only flat dispersion relations. When we introduce a disorder into it, a finite-size scaling of the level statistics shows two clear (localization-delocalization and delocalization-localization) transitions for a wide range of the energy, with increasing the degree of disorder. These transitions are confirmed also by finding the system-size-independent characteristic of the wave function.
