BACKGROUND: Nectar plants provide extra nourishment for parasitoids, which can utilize floral volatiles to locate nectar-rich flowers. A promising strategy is to screen potential floral species based on the wasps' olfactory preferences for nectar sources, and to ensure their suitability for both natural enemies and targeted pests. Cotesia vestalis (Haliday) is a dominant parasitoid of the oligophagous pest Plutella xylostella, which poses a significant threat to cruciferous vegetables globally. However, the chemical cues in plant-parasitoid complexes mediating Cotesia vestalis to locate nectar food resources and the positive effect of nectar plants on the Cotesia vestalis population are poorly understood. RESULTS: The results showed that Fagopyrum esculentum was the most attractive plant that attracted Cotesia vestalis, not Plutella xylostella in 44 flowering plants from 19 families. 1,2-Diethyl benzene and 1,4-diethyl benzene, identified from the floral volatiles from F. esculentum in full bloom, were found to elicit dose-dependent electrophysiological responses and attract Cotesia vestalis adults, demonstrating their potential as semiochemicals. Moreover, the age-stage, two-sex life table revealed that feeding on nectar food increased the efficacy of Cotesia vestalis adults against Plutella xylostella. CONCLUSION: In summary, the findings provide insights into the chemical ecology of plant-parasitoid complexes and support the potential use of F. esculentum as insectary plants in habitat manipulation against Plutella xylostella by supplying natural nectar food for the Cotesia vestalis population. Our results suggest an attract and reward strategy based on an attractant for Cotesia vestalis to control Plutella xylostella, or the development of volatile-based artificial food for Cotesia vestalis. © 2023 Society of Chemical Industry.

Objective: The workers in emerging manufacturing are at decreased risk of traditional occupational diseases, while probably at increased risk of work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs). This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and risk factors of WMSDs among emerging manufacturing workers in Beijing. Methods: A total of 3,359 valid questionnaires were collected from 10 enterprises in the electronics, pharmaceutical, and motor manufacturing industries. The prevalence of WMSDs was assessed using the Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire. The work posture load was evaluated through a questionnaire. Results: The results showed that the highest prevalence of WMSDs was observed in part of the neck (15.0%), followed by the lower back (12.5%), shoulders (11.2%), and upper back (7.1%). Female workers, workers aged older than 35 years, workers with a BMI of ≥28 kg/m2, longer working experience, never exercised had a higher prevalence of WMSDs. Logistic regression analysis showed that female workers, workers aged older than 35 years, with a middle school education and college degree, and workers who never exercised had a higher risk of WMSDs. In addition, workers who sat for long during work, worked hard with upper limbs or hands, worked in uncomfortable postures, and performed repetitive operations were positively related with the increased risk of WMSDs. Conclusion: These findings suggested that WMSDs were prevalent among emerging manufacturing workers in Beijing, China, while efforts should be made to reshape the risk factors associated with WMSDs, such as prolonged sitting, uncomfortable positions, and repetitive operations. Encouraging exercise and promoting ergonomic interventions probably be also benefit to induce the risk of WMSDs.

Evidences showed the link between allergy and depression, while the relationships of depression with allergy-related outcomes is insufficient. The objective of this study is to evaluate and compare the relationship of depression with allergy-related outcomes assessed using two different outcome indicators, in a population-based study. A cross-sectional study was performed of 1094 participants in the 2005-2006 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). The self-reported allergic symptoms of allergic rhinitis (AR) status and immunoglobulin E (IgE) were used to evaluate the allergy-related outcomes. The depression disorder was defined as the ≥ 10 points on the Patient Health Questionnaire-9. Logistic and linear regression models were performed to illustrate the associations of depression and allergy-related outcomes. The prevalence of AR and depression was 34.2% and 6.8%, respectively. The odds of depression were 8.6% higher in participants with AR patients compared those without AR [odds ratio (OR) = 1.739, 95% confidence interval (CI): (1.034, 2.933)], while the odds of depression in participants with allergic sensitization and without allergic sensitization were not found significant difference. Allergy is positively associated with depression disorder, and patients with allergy-related outcomes, such as AR, may be at higher risk of depression, while the IgE level was not founded to be related with depression. In the treatment of AR patients with depression symptoms, early detection and management of mental problems are of importance.

BACKGROUNDS: Elderly and frailty individuals show a more senescent immune system, which may relate to worse outcome in community-acquired pneumonia (CAP). This study aimed to explore prognostic factors related to immune. METHODS: Sixty of elderly (≥65 years) and frailty (clinical frailty scale ≥5 scores) nonsevere CAP patients and 60 severe CAP (SCAP) patients were recruited at our center. Clinical and laboratory data, and several assessment scores were collected. RESULTS: Compared with nonsevere CAP group, the elderly and frailty SCAP patients showed higher level of BMI, PaCO2 and lactate in arterial blood-gas, CURB-65 score, ICU admission, mechanical ventilation, shock accidence, and longer hospital stay using two-tailed t test. The SCAP group also showed increased CRP, IL-6, and PCT, and decreased CD3+ T cells, CD4+ T cells, and CD8+ T cells. Logistic regression analysis showed that CD4+ T cells, IL-6 and PCT were independent prognostic factors for SCAP. The area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve for CD4+ T cells combined with PCT was 0.771 (95% CI 0.683-0.859), and the sensitivity and specificity were both 76.7%. Paired t test analysis showed that low CD4+ T cells in SCAP patients increased after treatment. CONCLUSIONS: CD4+ T cells decreased in elderly and frailty SCAP patients, and CD4+ T cells combined with PCT were relatively accurate in the prediction of elderly and frailty SCAP.

BACKGROUND: Growing evidences showed that long working hours is associated with depression epidemic, but few studies investigate whether physical activity (PA) could modify the risk of depression associated with long working hours, which was the purpose of the present study. METHODS: A cross-sectional data obtained from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2015-2018. According to the criteria of International Labour Organization, long working hours was defined as >40 h/wk. The Nine-item Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9) was used to identify depression. Binary logistic regression and restricted cubic spline (RCS) models were used to estimate the associations between long working hours and depression, furthermore to estimate the association of PA. RESULTS: 5958 participants were included in the study. The results indicated that 3074 (51.6 %) of participants worked >40 h/wk. The prevalence of depression was 7.7 %. Logistic regression analysis indicated a positive association between long working hours and depression [OR = 1.738, 95 CI (1.427, 2.117)], and the results were still robust after controlling other confounding factors. RCS models indicated that the high intensity PA group had the lowest risk of depression, followed by low intensity PA group and no PA group. CONCLUSION: Long working hours probably be associated with depression, while PA can modify the risk to some degree.

Objective: Occupational stress is a critical global public health problem. We aimed to evaluate the prevalence of occupational stress among the workers in the electricity, heat, gas, water production and supply (EHGWPS), manufacturing, and transportation industries in Beijing, China. We explored the demographic differences in occupational stress status among workers in industrial enterprises. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 13,867 workers. The self-administered New Brief Job Stress Questionnaire was used to evaluate high occupational stress status, which includes four sub-dimensions (job stressors, stress response, social support, job stressors & social support). Multiple regression and logistic regression models were used to estimate the association between high occupational stress and the four occupational stress sub-dimensions with risk factors. Results: A total of 13,867 workers were included. The prevalence of high occupational stress was 3.3% in the EHGWPS industries, 10.3% in manufacturing, and 5.8% in transportation. The prevalence of high occupational stress was higher than in the other two categories (p < 0.05) in manufacturing industries. Logistic regression analysis showed that male workers with lower educational status, more job experience, and working in manufacturing were vulnerable to high occupational stress. Further analysis of the four occupational stress sub-dimensions showed that male workers, older adult workers, workers with lower educational levels, and longer working time were associated with higher scores in job stressors, stress response, social support, and job stress & social support (all p < 0.05). Moreover, divorced or widowed workers had higher occupational stress scores. Conclusion: Male workers with lower educational levels and longer working time may have an increased risk of occupational stress.

Studies have shown that organophosphate pesticides (OPs) exposure may disrupt thyroid endocrine functions in animal models, agricultural population, occupational workers, and work-related population. However, the relationships between OPs exposure and thyroid hormone levels in the general population are unclear. This study aimed to explore the relationships of OPs exposure with thyroid hormone and antibody levels in the general population. We analyzed a sample of 1089 US adults from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2001-2002. OPs exposure was estimated using measures of six non-specific dialkyl phosphate metabolites (DAPs), e.g., dimethylphosphate (DMP). Multiple linear regression models were used to examine the associations of OPs exposure with thyroid hormone and antibody levels. The medians of urinary ∑DAPs detected in males and females were 32.98 nmol/g creatinine and 40.77 nmol/g creatinine, with statistical significance (p = 0.001). After controlling for sociodemographic factors, we found that concentrations of urinary OPs metabolites were positively associated with the serum thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) in the general US population, particularly in males; OPs metabolites were associated with the serum TgAb, tT3, fT3, and TSH. These findings showed that thyroid hormone and antibody disruption are probably associated with OPs exposure in the general population; more studies are needed to confirm our findings.

Vegetative propagation is an important method of reproduction and rejuvenation in horticulture and forestry plants with a long lifespan. Although substantial juvenile clones have been obtained through the vegetative propagation of ornamental plants, the molecular factors that regulate rejuvenation during vegetative propagation are largely unknown. Here, root sprouting and root cutting of Robinia pseudoacacia were used as two vegetative propagation methods. From two consecutive years of transcriptome data from rejuvenated seedlings and mature trees, one gene module and one miRNA module were found to be specifically associated with rejuvenation during vegetative propagation through weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA). In the gene module, a transcription factor-encoding gene showed high expression during vegetative propagation, and it was subsequently named RpTOE1 through homology analysis. Heterologous overexpression of RpTOE1 in wild-type Arabidopsis and toe1 toe2 double mutants prolonged the juvenile phase. The qRT-PCR results predicted RpFT to be a downstream gene that was regulated by RpTOE1. Further investigation of the protein-DNA interactions using yeast one-hybrid, electrophoretic mobility shift, and dual luciferase reporter assays confirmed that RpTOE1 negatively regulated RpFT by binding directly to the TOE binding site (TBS)-like motif on its promoter. On the basis of these results, we showed that the high expression of RpTOE1 during vegetative propagation and its inhibition of RpFT played a key role in the phase reversal of R. pseudoacacia.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the differences of health hazards between acetylenogen dust as two different occupational hazards of "particles not otherwise regulated" and "calcium carbide". METHODS: A calcium carbide production enterprise in northwest China was selected. The occupational health survey was used to obtain the spatial distribution and population distribution of calcium carbide dust. Occupational health testing was performed to determine the time-weighted average exposure concentration(C_(TWA)) and excursion limits of calcium carbide dust in the workplace and the main exposure positions. The Singapore semi-quantitative risk matrix was used for occupational risk assessment. The "Classification of Occupational Disease Hazards in the Workplace Part 1: Productive Dust"(GBZ/T 229.1-2010) was used for the operation classification. The calcium carbide dust was regarded as two different occupational hazards: "particles not otherwise regulated" and "calcium carbide", the differences of health hazards between which were compared. PC-TWA of calcium carbide was performed at 2.28 mg/m~3. The heat amount of CaC_2 and CaO released after reacting with water was compared by using Hess' s law, and the reaction rates of the two reactions are compared. RESULTS: The concentrations of calcium carbide dust in the workplace of belt inspection position and the calcium carbide crusher was higher(14.3-15.7 mg/m~3), and the concentrations of the driver in the calcium carbide loader was higher(13.8 mg/m~3). The result of the risk assessment show that the health risks of calcium carbide dust in various positions are basically low risk. Only when the type of damage was "calcium carbide", the risk of the driver of calcium carbide loader increase to medium. The operation classification result show that the hazard classification of calcium carbide dust in each post is basically relatively harmless. Only the type of damage was "calcium carbide", the classification of the driver of the calcium carbide crusher loader increased to moderately hazardous operations. As for the "calcium carbide", the operation classification index of calcium carbide were higher than that of "particles not otherwise regulated". CaC_2 reacting with water released more heat than that of equal amount CaO. CONCLUSION: In the current production process of calcium carbide dust, except for the crushing section, its occupational health risk was low, but the health risk level of calcium carbide as "calcium carbide" was higher, indicating that the evaluation of calcium carbide dust as "particles not otherwise regulated" may underestimate its occupational hazard.

BACKGROUND: Osteonecrosis of femoral head (ONFH) is a pathological state caused by lack of blood supply in femoral head. This study aimed to explore the function of Lycium barbarum polysaccharide (LBP), an antioxidant agent extracted from L. barbarum, on ONFH. METHODS: Osteonecrosis rat model was generated using lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and methylprednisolone followed by examination of body weight, blood glucose, morphology, and BMSC osteoblast differentiation. The effect and underlying mechanism of LBP on the proliferation, apoptosis, and osteoblast differentiation of BMSC were determined with or without LPS or hypoxia treatment using CCK-8. Alizarin Red S staining, flow cytometry, and western blot, respectively. RESULT: LBP could protect against glucocorticoid-induced ONFH in rats, resulting in improved sparse trabecular bone, empty lacunae and bone cell coagulation. Moreover, LBP promoted the proliferation and osteoblast differentiation of bone mesenchymal-derived stem cells (BMSCs) in a dose-dependent manner. Furthermore, LBP enhanced osteoblast differentiation of BMSCs under hypoxia condition. Mechanistically, we found that LBP treatment enhanced Runx2 and ALP expression in BMSCs. LBP restored the expression of Runx2 and ALP under hypoxia, suggesting that LBP might be involved in regulating Runx2/ALP expression and contributed to osteoblast differentiation. Knockdown of Runx2 significantly inhibited BMSCs proliferation, while LBP treatment did not rescue the osteoblast differentiation ability of BMSCs with Runx2 knockdown. CONCLUSION: Our findings suggested that LBP protects against ONFH via regulating Runx2 expression, which could be utilized to treat patients suffering ONFH.

Although the health effects of exposure to low-dose ionizing radiation have been the focus of many studies, the affected biological functions and underlying regulatory mechanisms are not well-understood. In particular, the influence of radiation exposure at doses of less than 200 mGy on the regulation of genes and pathways remains unclear. To investigate the molecular alterations induced by varying doses of low-dose radiation (LDR), transcriptomic analysis was conducted based on ribonucleic acid (RNA) sequencing following exposure to 50 and 150 mGy doses. Human peripheral blood was collected, and the samples were divided into three groups, including two treatments and one control (no radiation). A total of 876 (318 upregulated and 558 downregulated) and 486 (202 upregulated and 284 downregulated) differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified after exposure to 50 mGy and 150 mGy, respectively. Most upregulated genes in both the 50 mGy and 150 mGy groups were associated with 'antigen processing and presentation,' which appeared to be the major targets affected by LDR exposure. Several interacting genes, including HLA-DQA1, HLA-DQA2, HLA-DQB2, HLA-DRB1, and HLA-DRB5 were mapped to 'antigen processing and presentation,' 'immune system-related diseases' and the 'cytokine-mediated signaling pathway,' suggesting that these genes might drive the downstream transmission of these signal transduction pathways. Our results suggest that exposure to LDR may elicit changes in key genes and associated pathways, probably helping further explore the biological processes and molecular mechanism responsible for low-dose occupational or environmental exposures in humans.

OBJECTIVES: To characterize serum microRNA (miR) and the miR interactome of active RA patients in RA aetiology and pathogenesis. METHODS: The differentially expressed miRs (DEmiRs) in serum of naïve active RA patients (NARAPs, n = 9, into three pools) vs healthy controls (HCs, n = 15, into five pools) were identified with Agilent human miR microarray analysis. Candidate driver genes in epigenetic and pathogenic signalling pathway modules for RA were analysed using miRTarBase and a molecular complex detection algorithm. The interactome of these DEmiRs in RA pathogenesis were further characterized with gene ontology and Kyoto Encyclopaedia of Genes and Genomes. RESULTS: Three upregulated DEmiRs (hsa-miR-187-5p, -4532, -4516) and eight downregulated DEmiRs (hsa-miR-125a-3p, -575, -191-3p, -6865-3p, -197-3p, -6886-3p, -1237-3p, -4436b-5p) were identified in NARAPs. Interactomic analysis from heterogeneous experimentally validated sources yielded 1719 miR-target interactions containing 5.67% strong and 94.33% less strong experimental evidence. Gene ontology and Kyoto Encyclopaedia of Genes and Genomes analyses allocated the upregulated DEmiRs in the infection modules and the downregulated DEmiRs in the immune signalling pathways. Specifically, these DEmiRs revealed the significant contributions of the intestinal microbiome dysbiosis in the infection-inflammation-immune network for activation of T cells, immune pathways of IL-17, Toll-like receptor, TNF, Janus kinase-signal transducer and activator of transcription, osteoclast cell differentiation pathway and IgA production to the active RA pathogenesis. CONCLUSIONS: Our experiment-based interactomic study of DEmiRs in serum of NARAPs revealed novel clinically relevant miRs interactomes in the infection-inflammation-immune network of RA. These results provide valuable resources for understanding the integrated function of the miR network in RA pathogenesis and the application of circulating miRs as biomarkers for early aetiologic RA diagnosis.

BACKGROUND: Osteoarthritis represents a kind of chronic and degenerative joint disease characterized by articular cartilage injury and osteoproliferation. Osteoarthritis especially poses a serious threat to the elderly patients. At present, the diagnosis of osteoarthritis mainly consists of clinical examination, X-ray examination, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and arthroscopy. However, limitations and misdiagnosis are found within the single method. OBJECTIVES: This article intends to investigate the feasibility of assessing the condition of knee osteoarthritis through quantitative analysis of cartilage using nuclear magnetic resonance 3D fast-spin spoiled gradient-recalled echo (NMR 3D-FS-SPGR) imaging and γ-glutamic acid carboxylase (GGCX) detection in synovial fluid. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 60 patients with primary knee osteoarthritis were enrolled. All the patients were staged and received 3D-FS-SPGR sequence MRI scan for grading based on scan results and cartilage injury. Cartilage tissues were collected for immunohistochemistry (IHC). The GGCX in cartilage was detected using western blotting to analyze the correlation with arthritis. RESULTS: The condition of articular cartilage injury in arthritis patients was clearly observed using 3D-FS-SPGR sequence. The expression of GGCX was decreased in 46 patients (p < 0.05). The expression of GGCX in synovial fluid was significantly reduced following upstaging (p < 0.05). The sensitivity measured using combined 3D-FS-SPGR imaging and synovial fluid GGCX detection for the evaluation of arthritis condition was significantly higher than that of the single detection method (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Our data showed that the sensitivity of combined detection was obviously higher than single detection for the evaluation of arthritis. The 3D-FS-SPGR combined with synovial fluid GGCX detection could be treated as a promising strategy for arthritis evaluation.

OBJECTIVE: To perfect the theory system of minimally invasive treatment for osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH) with ß tricalcium phosphate (ß-TCP) bioceramic system and evaluate the effectiveness. METHODS: Eighteen New Zealand white rabbits aged 7-8 months were used to establish an animal model to verify the vascularization of porous ß-TCP bioceramic rods. Micro-CT based three-dimensional reconstruction and fluorescence imaging were used to display the new blood vessels at 4, 8, and 12 weeks after operation. The inserting depth, number and diameter of vessels in the encapsulated area were analyzed. Nine pig femoral specimens were randomly divided into 3 groups ( n=3): group A was normal femur; group B had cavity (core decompression channel+spherical bone defect in femoral head); in group C, mixed bioceramic granules were implanted to fill the defect in femoral head, and porous ß-TCP bioceramic rod was implanted into decompression channel. The stiffness and yield load of specimens were analyzed by biomechanical test. A multicenter retrospective study was conducted to analyze 200 patients (232 hips) with femoral head necrosis treated with bioceramic system in 7 hospitals in China between January 2012 and July 2018. There were 145 males and 55 females, with an average age of 42 years (range, 17-76 years). According to the Association Research Circulation Osseous (ARCO) stage, 150 hips were in stage Ⅱ and 82 hips in stage Ⅲ. Postoperative imaging assessment was carried out regularly, and hip function was evaluated by Harris score. The effectiveness of ARCO stage Ⅱ and Ⅲ was also compared. RESULTS: Animal experiments showed that blood vessels could grow into the encapsulated area and penetrate it at 12 weeks. The inserting depth, number and diameter of blood vessels in the encapsulated area gradually increased, and there was significant difference between different time points ( P<0.05). Biomechanical tests showed that the stiffness and yield load of specimens in groups B and C were significantly lower than those in group A, while the yield load in group B were significantly lower than that in group C ( P<0.05). The stiffness in group C was restored to 41.52%±3.96% in group A, and the yield load was restored to 46.14%±7.85%. Clinical study showed that 200 patients were followed up 6-73 months, with an average of 22.7 months. At last follow-up, 12 patients (16 hips) underwent total hip arthroplasty, and the hip survival rate was 93.10%. According to the imaging evaluation, 184 hips (79.31%) were stable and 48 (20.69%) were worse. Harris score (79.3±17.3) was significantly higher than that before operation (57.3±12.0) ( t=18.600, P=0.000). The excellent rate of hip function was 64.22% (149/232). The survival rate of hip joint, imaging score and Harris score of patients in ARCO stage Ⅱ were better than those in ARCO stage Ⅲ ( P<0.05). CONCLUSION: ß-TCP bioceramic system can guide the abundant blood supply of greater trochanter and femoral neck to the femoral head to promote repair; it can partly restore the mechanical properties of the femoral head and neck in the early stage, providing a new minimally invasive hip-preserving method for patients with ONFH, especially for those in early stage.

Chondrocytes are the sole cellular constituents of normal cartilage. The degeneration and apoptosis of these cells are considered the main cause of osteoarthritis (OA). Previous studies have suggested that the enhancement of autophagy in chondrocytes can delay the progression of osteoarthritis by affecting intracellular metabolic activity, i.e., by regulating the metabolism of nutrients, which can delay cell aging and death. In this review, we explored the relationship between autophagy and chondrocyte metabolism and provided new ideas for the prevention and treatment of OA.

PURPOSE: Postoperative infection has seriously affected the prognosis of cancer patients, while probiotics have been increasingly used to prevent postoperative infection in clinical practice. This study aimed to evaluate the preventive effect of probiotics on infection after colorectal cancer (CRC) surgery. METHODS: Related clinical trial reports were collected from Pubmed, Embase, Cochrane Library as well as China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) databases. These reports were then strictly screened, and information as well as data were extracted. Finally, the enrolled studies were evaluated by systematic review and meta-analysis using STATA v11 and Revman v5.2. RESULTS: Probiotics administration contributed to the reduction of overall infection rate after colorectal surgery, with a pooled odds ratio (OR) of 0.51 (95% CI: 0.38-0.68, P = 0.00). Meanwhile, the incidence of incision infection (pooled OR = 0.59, 95% CI 0.39-0.88, P = 0.01) and pneumonia (pooled OR = 0.56, 95% CI 0.32-0.98, P = 0.04) as well as the first flatus time (SMDs = - 0.70, 95% CI - 1.13-- 0.27, P = 0.002) were also reduced by probiotics. In addition, urinary tract infection, anastomotic leakage, and duration of postoperative pyrexia were also analyzed, which displayed no statistical differences compared with those of control. CONCLUSION: Probiotics have potential efficacy on preventing postoperative infection and related complications in cancer patients undergoing colorectal surgery.

PURPOSE: To describe the rationale, the surgical technique, and the short-term follow-up results of a new minimally invasive treatment of osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH) with an angioconductive bioceramic rod (ABR) implant. METHODS: Sixty-two patients (72 hips) with ARCO stage IIA-IIIC ONFH treated with the minimally invasive ABR from January 2012 to December 2016 were reviewed (17 females, 45 males, mean age 44.49). This technique used the angioconductive properties of the porous implant to repair the necrosis by driving vascularization from the trochanter to the necrotic area. Patients had a mean follow-up period of 26.74 months. The outcomes were evaluated by hip joint survival, radiograph, and the Harris Hip Score (HHS). The complications occurred during the treatment period were recorded. RESULTS: No serious post-operative complications occurred during the treatment. The overall joint survival rate was 90.27%, with seven conversions to THA. Improvements were observed in 23 (31.95%) hips, 24 (33.33%) hips remained stable, and 25 (34.72%) hips had worse results according to the radiographic evaluation. The mean HHS at the end follow-up significantly improved compared to the pre-operative mean HHS (82.27 vs 58.14, p < 0.001). In both radiographic evaluation and HHS, the treatment was more effective on patients beneath 44 years old (p < 0.05); ARCO stage II compared to stage III (p < 0.05); and China-Japan Friendship Hospital (CJFH) type C compared to CJFH type L (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The minimally invasive treatment of ONFH with ABR showed promising results in delaying or even terminating the progression of the necrosis and improving hip function, especially in younger patients and in the early stages of the disease.

Black locust (Robinia pseudoacacia L.) is an easy to raise, fast growing, medium-sized deciduous tree species highly tolerant to harsh eco-conditions, i.e., drought and harsh winters, and it is widely adaptable to sandy, loamy, and marshy soils. The basis for this adaptability remains to be investigated at the transcriptomic level using real-time quantitative PCR (qPCR). Selection of a reliable gene for the normalization of qPCR data is important for obtaining accurate results in gene expression. The goal of this study was to identify an appropriate reference gene from 12 candidate genes for gene expression analysis in black locust exposed to various stressors such as abscisic acid (ABA), NaCl, polyethylene glycol (PEG) and varying temperatures. In GeNorm and NormFinder analyses, ACT (actin) and GAPDH (glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase) gene expression were the most stable in all conditions except heat stress, but in BestKeeper analysis, GAPDH and helicase gene expression were the most stable under NaCl and heat stress. In contrast, ACT and GAPDH were highest under abscisic acid (ABA), GAPDH and ßTUB (beta tubulin) under cold stress, and helicase and EF1α (elongation factor 1 alpha) under PEG stress. We found that the most stable reference gene combination for all conditions was ACT and GAPDH. Additionally, the expression pattern of NAC2 (a transcription factor) and BGL2 in different tissues and under different stress conditions was analyzed relative to ACT and GAPDH and UBQ (ubiquitin) the least stably expressed gene. NAC2 and BGL2 both had highest expression in flowers and pods under ABA stress at 48h. This study provides useful reference genes for future gene expression studies in black locust.

PURPOSE: According to the severity of knee valgus, different operative approaches were applied in total knee replacement. Hence, we assessed the safety and efficacy of different operative approaches in the level IV study. METHODS: From May 2011 to March 2014, a retrospectively analysis was conducted among 31 patients with knee valgus (mild in 10 cases, moderate in 8 cases and severe in 13 cases based on Keblish grade). Medial approach trip knee replacement was performed in mild and moderate patients, which were assigned as medial approach group. Lateral approach was performed in severe patients, which was assigned as lateral approach group. Relevant results were compared between medial approach group and lateral approach group, including valgus corrected angle, postoperative knee joint activity and Kss score. Furthermore, operative time, postoperative blood loss, patellar trajectory and anterior knee pain were also compared between the two groups. RESULTS: All operations were successful without obvious complications. In medial approach group, postoperative knee valgus angle was (7 ±â€¯1)°. Three months after operation, degree of knee joint activity was (85.2 ±â€¯5.2)°, and KSS score of knee joint was (80.1 ±â€¯5.2). Significant differences were detected in these compared with preoperative data (all P < .05). Moreover, similar results were found in lateral approach group with postoperative knee valgus angle as (8.2 ±â€¯2.3)°, degree of knee joint activity three months after operation as (85.2 ±â€¯5.3)°, and KSS score of knee joint as (80.3 ±â€¯3.2). However, no significant differences were found among these three groups in operative time, postoperative blood loss, patellar trajectory or anterior knee pain. CONCLUSIONS: Different operative approaches in total knee replacement according to the severity of knee valgus were proved as effective and safe procedures, which deserved further application.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is the most common chronic inflammatory joint disorder and anti-cyclic citrullinated peptide antibody (anti-CCP Ab) is regarded as a serological marker for diagnosing early and late RA. In the present study, we aimed to determine the levels of anti-CCP Ab in serum, synovial tissue (ST) and synovial fluid (SF) in RA patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty (TKA). 23 patients were included. Rheumatoid factor (RF) and anti-CCP Ab in serum were detected prior to surgery and then at 1, 3, 6 and 12 months after TKA. Synovial samples were obtained by knee arthroscopy and used for anti-CCP detection. One month after TKA, anti-CCP levels were significantly reduced (P < 0.01) in RA patients. However, their levels were not significantly different between pre-surgery and 1 year post-surgery (P > 0.05). Furthermore, anti-CCP levels in ST were much higher than in serum. These findings suggest that RA patients should continue antirheumatic therapy after TKA. ST is the preferred place for the synthesis of anti-CCP Ab.
