RESUMEN

The effect of diets with various dietary MUFA content and n-6/n-3 ratios, diets 1 (55.33, 1.00), 2 (25.30, 1.00), 3 (55.13, 2.05), 4 (24.92, 2.03), 5 (54.94, 8.06) and 6 (24.91, 8.06) and a control diet with fish oil (FO), diet 7 (33.60, 5.97), was studied on growth and digestive physiology of rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss. Juveniles, 14.65 g ± 0.17, were fed the experimental diets for eight weeks. Those fish fed diet 1 (55.33, 1.00) had the lowest growth and nutritional indices, while fish fed diet 6 (24.91, 8.06) possessed the highest indices. However, fish fed D7 (33.60, 5.97) was intermediate in this regard. Proximate body composition results revealed no significant differences among various experimental groups (P > 0.05). Fish fed on diet 1 possessed the highest alkaline protease activity, while fish raised on diet 2 showed the lowest enzyme activity (P < 0.05). Fish fed on diets 1, 3 and 4 had the highest lipase activity (P > 0.05). Amylase activity and intestinal parameters did not differ among groups (P > 0.05). MUFA contents of liver and muscle reflected the MUFA contents of the diets; however, liver PUFA contents was not affected by dietary PUFA contents (P < 0.05). However, 18:3n-3 contents of liver decreased as dietary n-6/n-3 ratio increased (P < 0.05). Furthermore, the liver 20:4n-6 contents considerably increased as dietary n-6/n-3 increased to 8.06 (P < 0.05). Muscle 22:6n-3 content of groups 1 to 6 was lower than group 7 (P < 0.05). In conclusion, rainbow trout was considerably capable of de novo synthesis of 22:6n-3. Meanwhile, increasing dietary n-6/n-3 ratio to 8.06 decreased the muscle 22:6n-3 content which requires further considerations regarding fish immune competence and nutritional quality for human consumption.

Dynamic changes of tissues, organs and growth that occur in fish larvae during the transition to the juvenile stage are accompanied by differences in metabolic, locomotor and feeding activities that can reflect on fish's oxidative status. In this study, we examine how body growth, antioxidant system (superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione reductase (GR) and total antioxidant capacity (TAC) and oxidative damage (malondialdehyde-MDA) parameters change in larvae of yellowfin seabream larvae (Acanthopagrus latus) during early development (0, 7, 15, 22 and 30 day after hatching-DAH). Body growth (length and weight) starts to intensify from 15 DAH. We observed general increase in the antioxidant system (AOS) with the age of larvae from newly hatched and 7 DAH up to 15 and 22 DAH individuals. 15 and 22 DAH larvae had the greatest levels of TAC, SOD and GR activity, while 30 DAH larvae had higher CAT activity from 0, 7 and 15 DAH and MDA concentration in comparison to 15 DAH individuals. Several developmental events can be linked with observed results: lower AOS in 0 and 7 DAH individuals with low locomotor activity, growth, endo-exogenous feeding phase and cell differentiation; 15 and 22 DAH larvae are under pressure of fast growth, enhanced swimming and foraging capacity; while higher MDA production in 30 DAH larvae can be a result of shifts in muscle metabolism, changes in both quality and quantity of food and a significant increase in weight. The present study provides insight into the changes in redox status during the ontogeny of A. latus, fish species about which physiology is still little known but with a potential for use in marine culture. Ability to lower oxidative stress during critical developmental periods can enhance that potential.

The capability of generating magnetically soft and hard phases in a material is important in many aspects, ranging from basic science to applications. Here, the emergence of soft and hard magnetic phases is reported in Fe nanowire (NW) arrays with a diameter of 35 nm fabricated by using a pulsed electrochemical deposition method in porous aluminum oxide templates under different current density (Cd) values in the range of 25-100 mA cm-2. The variation ofCdinfluences the grain size, crystallinity, electrodeposition efficiency and length of the Fe NWs, as characterized by x-ray diffraction, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, vibrating sample magnetometry and field-emission scanning electron microscopy. IncreasingCdfrom 25 to 80 mA cm-2results in a significant decrease in coercivity and squareness from 1590 to 900 Oe and 0.9 to 0.5, respectively, inducing the soft and hard phases along the length of Fe NWs. Further increasing theCdleads to the separation of the phases, as evidenced by first-order reversal curve analysis. From a theoretical aspect, the emergence of the soft phase may lead to the occurrence of the fanning reversal mode in the NWs, for which there is no precedent in previous experimental investigations.

Carboxymethyl starch (CMS) and carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) loaded by highly dispersed metal subnanoparticles (MSNPs) showed antibacterial activity against E. coli and B. subtilis strains. Copper and silver were found to act in both cationic and zero-valence forms. The antibacterial activity depends on the metal species content but only up to a certain level. Silver cation (Ag+) showed higher antibacterial activity as compared to Ag0, which was, however, more effective than Cu0, due to weaker retention. The number of carboxyl groups of the biopolymers was found to govern the material dispersion in aqueous media, the metal retention strength and dispersion in the host-matrices. Cation and metal retention in both biopolymers was found to involve interactions with the oxygen atoms of both hydroxyl and carboxyl groups. There exists a ternary interdependence between the Zeta potential (ZP), pH induced by the biocidal agent and its particle size (PS). This interdependence is a key factor in the exchange processes with the surrounding species, including bacteria. Clay mineral incorporation was found to mitigate material dispersion, due to detrimental competitive clay:polymer interaction. This knowledge advancement opens promising prospects for manufacturing metal-loaded materials for biomedical applications.

Low and variable growth and survival rates (SR) of 6-10 days postfertilization zebrafish larvae are a problem. This problem seems to be linked to starter feed characteristics. This study is an attempt to find alternatives to address these requests. For this, larvae were fed fresh and lyophilized microalgae (Chlorella, Scenedesmus, and Haematococcus), egg yolk (YOLK), lyophilized Artemia nauplii (LAN), and a combination of them. The lowest SR was observed in algae-fed larvae. All died on day 11 showing an emaciated appearance, similar to starved larvae. The highest SR was observed in YOLK- and LAN-fed larvae, which also showed an elongated anterior part of the body. Negative correlations of SR with vegfaa (vascular endothelial growth factor) and morphometric traits with igf2a (insulin-like growth factor) were also found and supported by changes at the molecular level. The presence of algae in the digestive tract of the larvae and the observation of fecal droppings indicate that the algae have an appropriate size and are palatable. The increase in the digestive enzyme activity shows the larval effort to digest the algae. The fact that the algae-fed larvae died even before the larvae were kept in starvation indicates the dramatic amount of energy that the larvae spent in microalgae digestion. Although both YOLK- and LAN-fed larvae had the highest SR, LAN group started to feed on Artemia nauplii sooner. This can be linked to the delayed growth in YOLK-fed larvae and an accelerated growth in the case of LAN-fed group. LAN is an expensive feed with negative effects on water quality, whereas YOLK is a cheap and nutritionally balanced feed with fine granular texture that contributes to a larval SR similar to LAN without affecting water quality. In conclusion, microalgae cannot be considered a suitable starter food for zebrafish, whereas LAN and YOLK can be considered good starter feeds.

The role of the retention strength of Cu0 and Ag0 nanoparticles on the induced antibacterial properties of montmorillonite and cellulose-supported polyol dendrimer was comparatively investigated. An unprecedented approach involving X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, thermal analyses, and surface charge measurements allowed correlating the host-matrix features to the different antibacterial activities of Cu0 and Ag0 nanoparticles against both the bacterial strains. Optimal metal-matrix interactions appear to favor high dispersion of both metal particles and material grains, thereby improving the contact surface with the cultivation media. This was explained in terms of hydrophilic character and judicious compromise between the metal retention by the host-matrix and release in the impregnating media. Competitive Lewis acid-base interactions appear to occur between MNP, solid surface and liquid media. These findings are of great importance, providing a deeper understanding of the antibacterial activity of metal-loaded materials. This opens promising prospects for vegetal fibers and clay-supported drugs to treat dermatological and gastro-intestinal infections.

To determine the effects of replacing fish oil (FO) with a mixture of vegetable oils (VO) in plant protein-rich diets on reproductive performance, the fatty acid profile of embryos as well as health indices of female rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) brooders (initial mean body weight, 1.8 ± 0.1 kg), a 3-month feeding trial was conducted. Four isoproteic (ca. 42%) and isoenergetic (ca. 20 MJ/kg) diets were formulated in which 50% (FO50/VO50), 75% (FO25/VO75), and 100% (VO100) of FO were replaced by a mixture of VO, whereas the control diet (FO100) was prepared with FO as the major source of lipid. Fish fed the VO100 had the lowest fertilization (73.0 ± 2.5%), survival at eyed-embryo stage (62.5 ± 5.0%), and hatching rate (56.0 ± 4.7%) rates. Brood fish fed the FO50/VO50, FO25/VO50, and VO100 diets had higher levels of saturated and monounsaturated fatty acids in embryos in comparison with fish fed FO100 diet. The levels of docosahexaenoic acid of embryos gradually decreased during embryogenesis in all treatments, whereas the concentrations of eicosapentaenoic acid was greatly increased at hatching day (35 days after spawning). Regarding serum biochemical parameters, fish fed the VO100 diet had the highest serum glucose, cholesterol, and low-density lipoprotein levels. The results of the current study revealed that replacement of dietary FO with a mixture of VO up to 75% did not have any adverse effects on reproductive performance and health indices of O. mykiss females.

An eleven weeks feeding trial was conducted to determine the effects of different levels of dietary soybean lecithin (SBL) on growth performance, blood chemistry and immunity in juvenile stellate sturgeon (Acipenser stellatus). Fish were fed seven isoproteic (44% crude protein) and isolipidic (17% crude fat) diets containing graded levels of SBL: 0 (control), 1, 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10%. Results showed that dietary SBL supplementation significantly improved the final body weight (BW) and weight gain (WG). Fish fed 6% SBL showed the highest BW and WG values in comparison to fish fed the control diet (P < 0.05), whereas increasing SBL levels above 6% had little practical benefit in terms of somatic growth performance. The inclusion of SBL in diets significantly improved the immune response as data from lysozyme, total Ig levels, alternative complement, phagocytic and bactericidal activities indicated (P < 0.05). The broken-line regression analysis of immunological variable revealed that depending on the parameter considered, the optimal SBL levels in diets for stellate sturgeon juveniles varied. In particular, dietary SBL levels requirements in stellate sturgeon when considering the phagocytic activity rate were determined at 3.3%, whereas 4.1-4.2% were recommended when considering data from lysozyme, alternative complement and bactericidal activities. In contrast, the highest minimum dietary SBL content was estimated at 6.9% when data from total Ig levels were considered. These results indicated that dietary PLs are required for boosting innate immunity in stellate sturgeon, although their minimal level changed depending on the immunological parameter considered. Therefore, we assume that SBL levels comprised between 3.3 and 6.9% may be used as a prophylactic measure to improve the health status in stellate sturgeon. Red blood cell count, hemoglobin and hematocrit levels increased with increasing dietary SBL levels, especially in those sturgeons fed the diet with 6% SBL (P < 0.05). In addition, white blood cell counts significantly increased as dietary SBL levels increased from 4 to 8% in comparison to the control group. Blood biochemistry was also affected by different dietary SBL levels. In particular, significantly higher levels of glucose, cholesterol, HDL and triglycerides were detected in fish fed >6%, >4%, >2% and 2% SBL, respectively (P < 0.05). Based on somatic growth parameters, blood chemistry and systemic immunity parameters, diets containing ca. 6% SBL are recommended for juvenile stellate sturgeon.
