INTRODUCTION: Metagenomic sequencing is a powerful tool that is widely used in laboratories worldwide for taxonomic characterization of microorganisms in clinical and environmental samples. In this study, we utilized metagenomics to investigate comprehensively the microbial diversity in fecal samples of children over a four-year period. Our methods were carefully designed to ensure accurate and reliable results. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Validated and analyzed were metagenomic data obtained from sequencing 27 fecal samples from children under 10 years old with gastroenteritis over a four-year period (2012-2016). The fecal specimens were collected from patients who received care at public health facilities in the northern region of Brazil. Sequencing libraries were prepared from cDNA and sequenced on the Illumina HiSeq. Kraken-2 was utilized to classify bacterial taxonomy based on the 16S rRNA gene, using the Silva rRNA database. Additionally, the Diamond program was used for mapping to the non-redundant protein database (NR database). Phylogenomic analyses were conducted using Geneious R10 and MEGA X software, and Bayesian estimation of phylogeny was performed using the MrBayes program. The results indicate significant heterogeneity among norovirus strains, with evidence of recombination and point mutations. This study presents the first complete genome of parechovirus 8 in the region. Additionally, it describes the bacterial populations and bacteriophages present in feces, with a high abundance of Firmicutes and Proteobacteria, including an increased proportion of the Enterobacteriaceae family. The presented data demonstrate the genetic diversity of microbial populations and provide a comprehensive report on viral molecular characterization. These findings are relevant for genomic studies in gastrointestinal infections. The metagenomic approach is a powerful tool for investigating microbial diversity in children with gastroenteritis. However, further studies are imperative to conduct genomic analysis of identified bacterial strains and thoroughly analyze antimicrobial resistance genes.

INTRODUCTION: SARS-CoV-2 infection usually presents similarly to other respiratory viral pathogens. Children and adolescents do not present as a group that is highly affected by the disease, having low infection rates. However, limited publications are associated with the findings of pneumonia in pediatric patients with COVID-19. OBJECTIVE: To analyze the clinical and epidemiological aspects of children and adolescents hospitalized with SARS-CoV-2 in a pre-Amazon region. METHODS: A retrospective study, carried out in four public hospitals in São Luís, Brazil where medical records of children and adolescents aged from 0 to 13 years, of both sexes, with clinical diagnosis of community-acquired pneumonia were evaluated from March 2020 to March 2021. RESULTS: Almost 40.0% of children were aged between 1 year and 5 years. Of the 128 children who had SARS-CoV-2, 3 are of indigenous ethnicity. Additionally, 78.6% of the children had fever and there was no significant difference between COVID-19 patients and those of other respiratory viruses. Eighteen patients had chronic neurological disease, which is the most common comorbidity observed in patients with coronavirus infection. Ground glass opacity attenuation was observed in 24.8% of children and adolescents with COVID-19. Anemia and increased inflammatory response markers were related to SARS-CoV-2 infection. More than 90.0% of patients admitted to hospital, regardless of etiology, were treated with antibiotics. Eighteen patients died. Pediatric multisystem inflammatory syndrome (PMIS) was diagnosed in 17 patients. CONCLUSIONS: SARS-CoV-2 in children and adolescents is mild, but the condition of patients with PMIS is more serious, with an increase in inflammatory biomarkers which can lead to death. Therefore, rapid diagnosis and differentiation of agents causing respiratory diseases are necessary for better therapeutic decision making, since the results of this study make us question the excessive use of antibiotics without meeting well-defined clinical-epidemiological criteria.

In 2017, the Brazilian State of Amapá registered the first occurrence of visceral leishmaniosis (VL) in 17 dogs in the outskirts of the capital, Macapá. Given the lack of knowledge on phlebotomines in that area, this study aimed to survey the fauna of these Diptera. Sampling was performed using CDC light traps placed at ten sampling sites. The specimens captured were Evandromyia walkeri (n=237), Nyssomyia antunesi (n=65) and Bichromomyia flaviscutellata (n=6). The phlebotomine species composition resulted in low species diversity, and none of the main vectors of the etiological agent of VL were identified in the study area.

DENV-2 was the main responsible for a 70% increase in dengue incidence in Brazil during 2019. That year, our metagenomic study by Illumina NextSeq on serum samples from acute febrile patients (n = 92) with suspected arbovirus infection, sampled in 22 cities of the state of Mato Grosso (MT), in the middle west of Brazil, revealed eight complete genomes and two near-complete sequences of DENV-2 genotype III, one Human parvovirus B19 genotype I (5,391 nt) and one Coxsackievirus A6 lineage D (4,514 nt). These DENV-2 sequences share the aminoacidic identities of BR4 lineage on E protein domains I, II and III, and were included in a clade with sequences of the same lineage circulating in the southeast of Brazil in the same year. Nevertheless, 11/34 non-synonymous mutations are unique to three strains inthis study, distributed in the E (n = 6), NS3 (n = 2) and NS5 (n = 3) proteins. Other 14 aa changes on C (n = 1), E (n = 3), NS1 (n = 2), NS2A (n = 1) and NS5 (n = 7) were first reported in a genotype III lineage, having been already reported only in other DENV-2 genotypes. All 10 sequences have mutations in the NS5 protein (14 different aa changes). Nine E protein aa changes found in two sequences, six of which are unique, are in the ectodomain; where the E:M272T change is on the hinge of the E protein at domain II, in a region critical for the anchoring to the host cell receptor. The NS5:G81R mutation, in the methyltransferase domain, was found in one strain of this study. Altogether, these data points to an important evolution of DENV-2 genotype III lineage BR4 during this outbreak in 2019 in MT. Genomic surveillance is essential to detect virus etiology and evolution, possibly related to immune evasion and viral fitness changes leading to future novel outbreaks.

Most of the soil quality assessment protocols are focused on crop production and conservation management, while studies on vital soil functions, such as water recharge potential, should be incorporated into the monitoring of impacts on environmental quality. Our objective was to evaluate, through the Nexus approach, how dynamic (land use and management) and inherent (soil type) factors impact soil physical properties and processes that drive water recharge potential, biomass production, and water erosion in the Cantareira System, Brazil. The assessment considered three soils (Typic Hapludult, Typic Dystrudept, and Typic Usthortent) and four land uses (native forest, rotational grazing, extensive grazing, and eucalyptus), which constitute the main soils and land uses in the Cantareira System region. Representative soil samples were collected at 0-5 and 30-35 cm depth and analyzed for several soil physical quality indicators, which were used to calculate a Soil Physical Quality Index based on soil functions. Converting the native forest to eucalyptus and pasture reduced the overall soil physical quality and water recharge potential. The groundwater recharge potential function in the topsoil has the highest score of 0.72 for Typic Dystrudept in native forest contrasting with 0.16 for extensive pasture. Typic Dystrudept obtained the highest value of the SPQI value (0-5 cm: 0.85; 30-35 cm: 0.90) for native forests when compared to Typic Hapludult (0-5 cm: 0.76; 30-35 cm: 0.57) and Typic Usthortent (0-5 cm: 0.75; 30-35 cm: 0.72). Our findings sustain that land use effects on soil functions depends on soil type. Inclusion of soil type into the Nexus approach increases the understanding of natural resources and derived benefits of water, energy and food in the Cantareira System.

Barium (Ba) is a non-essential element that can cause toxicity in living organisms and environmental contamination. Plants absorb barium predominantly in its divalent cationic form Ba2+. Sulfur (S) can decrease the availability of Ba2+ in the soil by causing its precipitation as barium sulfate, a compound known for its very low solubility. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of soil sulfate supply in soil Ba fractions, as well as on plant growth, and Ba and S uptake by lettuce plants grown in artificially Ba-contaminated soil under greenhouse conditions. The treatments consisted of five Ba doses (0, 150, 300, 450, and 600 mg kg-1 Ba, as barium chloride) combined with three S doses (0, 40, and 80 mg kg-1 S, as potassium sulfate). The treatments were applied to soil samples (2.5 kg) and placed in plastic pots for plant cultivation. The Ba fractions analyzed were extractable-Ba, organic matter-Ba, oxides associated-Ba, and residual-Ba. The results indicate that the extractable-Ba fraction was the main one responsible for Ba bioavailability and phytotoxicity, probably corresponding to the exchangeable Ba in the soil. The dose of 80 mg kg-1 of S reduced extractable-Ba by 30% at higher Ba doses while it increased the other fractions. Furthermore, S supply attenuated the growth inhibition in plants under Ba exposure. Thus, S supply protected the lettuce plants from Ba toxicity by reduction of Ba availability in soil and plant growth enhancement. The results suggest that sulfate supply is a suitable strategy for managing Ba-contaminated areas.

World food production must increase in the coming years with minimal environmental impact for food and nutrition security. Circular Agriculture has emerged as an approach to minimize non-renewable resource depletion and encourage by-product reuse. The goal of this study was to evaluate Circular Agriculture as a tool to increase food production and N recovery. The assessment was conducted for two Brazilian farms (Farm 1; Farm 2) with Oxisols under no-till and a diversified cropping system, including five species of grain, three cover crop species, and sweet potato. Both farms implemented an annual two-crop rotation and an integrated crop-livestock system with beef cattle confined for 2-years. Grain and forage from the fields, leftovers from silos, and crop residues were used as cattle feed. Grain yield was 4.8 and 4.5 t ha-1 for soybean, 12.5 and 12.1 t ha-1 for maize, and 2.6 and 2.4 t ha-1 for common bean, for Farm 1 and Farm 2, respectively, which is higher than the national average. The animals gained 1.2 kg day-1 of live weight. Farm 1 exported 246 kg ha-1 year-1 of N in grains, tubers, and animals, while 216 kg ha-1 year-1 was added as fertilizer and N to cattle. Farm 2 exported 224 kg ha-1 year-1 in grain and animals, while 215 kg ha-1 year-1 was added as fertilizer and N to cattle. Circular practices, i.e., no-till, crop rotation, year-round soil covered, maize intercropped with brachiaria ruziziensis, biological N fixation, and crop-livestock integration, increased crop yield and decreased N application by 14.7 % (Farm 1) and 4.3 % (Farm 2). 85 % of the N consumed by the confined animals was excreted and converted into organic compost. Overall, circular practices associated with adequate crop management allowed recovering high rate of applied N, reducing environmental impacts, and increasing food production with lower production costs.

The existence of sylvatic transmission of dengue virus in communities of neotropical bats remains uncertain. In this work we present a near-complete genome of dengue virus serotype 4 obtained from the brain sample of a bat from Platyrrhinus helleri specie collected in the Brazilian Amazon region. The presence of the virus in the brain sample may indicate a possible tropism for the central nervous system in bats, which may justify negative results in previous studies that focused on analysis of other tissues, such as liver and spleen. Besides the duration of dengue virus circulation in the Americas (circa 40 years) may be too short for an implementation of a sylvatic dengue virus cycle. Our findings suggest that continued monitoring is needed to confirm with the neotropical bats could potentially act as a natural reservoir of dengue in the region.

INTRODUCTION: Mollusks belonging to Biomphalaria genus are intermediate hosts of Schistosoma mansoni. In the Pará State, Northern Region of Brazil, there are reports of B. glabrata, B. straminea, B. schrammi, B. occidentalis, and B. kuhniana occurrence. Here, we report for the first time the presence of B. tenagophila in Belém, capital of Pará state. METHODS: A total of 79 mollusks were collected and examined to search for possible S. mansoni infection. The specific identification was made by morphological and molecular assays. RESULTS: No specimens parasitized by trematode larvae were detected. For the first time the presence of B. tenagophila in Belém, capital of Pará state, was reported. CONCLUSION: The result increases the knowledge about Biomphalaria mollusks occurrence in the Amazon Region and specifically alerts on the possible role of B. tenagophila in schistosomiasis transmission in Belém.

Parasitoses intestinais são infecções no trato gastrointestinal, por protozoários e/ou helmintos e representam um agravo à saúde pública, mas apesar dessa problemática, foram notificadas menos do que seria esperado devido a pandemia da COVID-19. O objetivo desse estudo foi verificar a ocorrência de enteroparasitas antes e durante a pandemia da COVID-19 em pacientes atendidos no laboratório do hospital de Nina Rodrigues, Maranhão. Foi realizado um estudo tranversal, descritivo e quantitativo, sendo analisados os exames dos anos de 2019 e 2020, coletados do banco de informações do hospital em agosto de 2021. Os dados foram inseridos no programa STATA 14.0 para análise. Em 2019 foram realizados 632 exames, e 2020 um total de 161, as mulheres e os adultos de meia idade (31-59 anos) foram os que mais realizaram exames, em relação aos laudos positivos, 18,51% e 26,09% apresentavam pelo menos um tipo de parasita em 2019 e 2020, respectivamente. O parasita mais ocorrente foi Entamoeba coli e 66,48% dos laudos tinham a presença de mais de um parasita, sendo a associação mais observada E. coli + Entamoeba histolytica. Nota-se que apesar do período pandêmico de 2020 ter sido realizado menos exames parasitológicos de fezes em comparação o período de 2019, é possível constatar que há uma ocorrência razoável de enteroparasitas na população de Nina Rodrigues, com um alto índice de indivíduos com biparasitismo. Assim, torna-se necessário a implementação de medidas que visem o diagnóstico e o tratamento dos infectados, e medidas de prevenção para minimizar a transmissão.


Intestinal parasites are infections in the gastrointestinal tract, by protozoa and/or helminths and represent a public health problem, but despite this problem, less were reported than would be expected due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The objective of this study was to verify the occurrence of enteroparasites before and during the COVID-19 pandemic in patients treated at the laboratory of the Nina Rodrigues hospital, Maranhão. A cross-sectional, descriptive, and quantitative study was carried out, analyzing the exams from the years 2019 and 2020, collected from the hospital's information bank in August 2021. The data were entered into the STATA 14.0 program for analysis. In 2019, 632 exams were performed, and in 2020 a total of 161, women and middle-aged adults (31-59 years old) were the ones who most underwent exams, in relation to positive reports, 18.51% and 26.09% had at least one type of parasite in 2019 and 2020, respectively. The most frequent parasite was Entamoeba coli and 66.48% of the reports had the presence of more than one parasite, the most observed association being E. coli + Entamoeba histolytica. It is noted that despite the 2020 pandemic period, fewer fecal parasitological tests were performed compared to the 2019 period, it is possible to verify that there is a reasonable occurrence of enteroparasites in the population of Nina Rodrigues, with a high rate of individuals with biparasitism. Thus, it is necessary to implement measures aimed at diagnosing and treating those infected, and preventive measures to minimize transmission.

Staphylococcus aureus is commonly found in wound infections where this pathogen impairs skin repair. The lectin isolated from leaves of Schinus terebinthifolius (named SteLL) has antimicrobial and antivirulence action against S. aureus. This study evaluated the effects of topical administration of SteLL on mice wounds infected by S. aureus. Seventy-two C57/BL6 mice (6−8 weeks old) were allocated into four groups: (i) uninfected wounds; (ii) infected wounds, (iii) infected wounds treated with 32 µg/mL SteLL solution; (iv) infected wounds treated with 64 µg/mL SteLL solution. The excisional wounds (64 mm2) were induced on the dorsum and infected by S. aureus 432170 (4.0 × 106 CFU/wound). The daily treatment started 1-day post-infection (dpi). The topical application of both SteLL concentrations significantly accelerated the healing of S. aureus-infected wounds until the 7th dpi, when compared to untreated infected lesions (reductions of 1.95−4.55-fold and 1.79−2.90-fold for SteLL at 32 µg/mL and 64 µg/mL, respectively). The SteLL-based treatment also amended the severity of wound infection and reduced the bacterial load (12-fold to 72-fold for 32 µg/mL, and 14-fold to 282-fold for 64 µg/mL). SteLL-treated wounds show higher collagen deposition and restoration of skin structure than other groups. The bacterial load and the levels of inflammatory markers (IL-6, MCP-1, TNF-α, and VEGF) were also reduced by both SteLL concentrations. These results corroborate the reported anti-infective properties of SteLL, making this lectin a lead candidate for developing alternative agents for the treatment of S. aureus-infected skin lesions.

Mato Grosso (MT) State is part of central western Brazil and has a tropical permissive environment that favors arbovirus outbreaks. A metagenomic approach was used to identify viral genomes in seven pools of serum from patients (n=65) with acute febrile disease. Seven chikungunya virus (CHIKV) genomes were determined, showing four amino acid changes found only in CHIKV genomes obtained in MT since 2018: nsP2:T31I, nsP3: A388V, E3:T201I and E3:H57R, in addition to other mutations in E1, nsP2 and nsP4. Six parvovirus B19 (B19V) genotype I genomes (4771-5131 nt) showed four aa alterations (NS1:N473D, R579Q; VP1:I716T; and 11 kDa:V44A) compared to most similar B19V from the USA. Coinfection between CHIKV and B19V was evidenced in 22/65 (33.8%) patients by RT‒PCR and PCR, respectively. Other viruses found in these pools include human pegivirus C, torque teno virus 3, an unclassified TTV and torque teno mini virus. Metagenomics represents a useful approach to detect viruses in the serum of acute febrile patients suspected of arbovirus disease.

Arthropod-borne viruses (arboviruses) are a significant public health threat, especially in tropical and subtropical regions. More than 150 arboviruses can cause febrile illness following infection in humans. The Brazilian Amazon region has the highest number of arboviruses detected worldwide. In addition to arboviruses, malaria, caused by Plasmodium vivax, is endemic in the Amazon. Patients with malaria and arboviral disease frequently show similar clinical presentation and laboratory findings, making the diagnosis of the cause of the infection challenging. The aim of this study was to evaluate the potential for viral infections in patients with suspected malaria but without Plasmodium infection in the Brazilian Amazon. We recruited 200 subjects with suspected malaria in Manaus, Brazil. First, we tested for arboviruses in serum samples from 124 of the 200 participants using an arbovirus DNA microarray platform, which did not detect any virus. Then, we mixed the serum samples of the other 76 participants in 10 pools and subjected them to next-generation sequencing. Analysis of the sequencing data revealed the presence of only one arbovirus (Zika virus) in one sample pool. This analysis also detected the presence of primate erythroparvovirus 1 and pegivirus C. These results suggest that arboviruses are not the most frequent viral infections in patients with suspected malaria but without Plasmodium infection in the metropolitan region of Manaus. Implementation of specific viral surveillance tests will help in the early detection of viruses with epidemic potential.

We herein describe the complete mitochondrial genome of Paralonchurus dumerilii (Sciaenidae) and infer its phylogenetic position within the family. The genome is 16,498 bp long and featured by 13 protein-coding genes (PCGs), two rRNAs, 22 tRNAs, and a control region (D-loop). Our phylogenetic analysis suggests a basal position of P. dumerilii as the sister group of the other species of Sciaenidae analyzed.

RESUMEN

A new virus, named Mutum virus, related to members of the family Tymoviridae, was isolated from mosquitoes (Mansonia spp.) in clone C6/36 cells, and its complete genome was sequenced. Its genome is 6494 nt in size with an organization resembling that of tymovirids. The isolated virus is phylogenetically related to two viruses isolated from Culex spp. mosquitoes: Ek Balam virus, reported in Mexico, and Culex-originated Tymoviridae-like virus, isolated in China. The results of this study suggest that this virus is a new member of the family Tymoviridae.

Agroecosystems in the upper Mississippi River Basin are highly productive but often contribute to deterioration of water quality and greenhouse gas emissions. Cover cropping and no-till are conservation strategies implemented to reduce the environmental impact of these agroecosystems. However, using multiple strategies can lead to systemwide interactions that are not fully understood. These interactions can affect not only environmental quality metrics, such as subsurface drainage nitrate losses or nitrous oxide (N2 O) emissions, but also may influence crop production potential. A field trial was initiated comparing nitrate losses, N2 O emissions, and crop production under systems with fall chisel plow tillage, fall chisel plow tillage with an oat (Avena sativa L.) cover crop (CP-oat), no-till (NT), no-till with a rye (Secale cereale L.) cover crop (NT-rye), and NT with zero N fertilizer. Pathways for nitrate losses and N2 O emissions did not appear linked and were not tied to cover crop or tillage practices. Nitrate losses were linked with drainage volumes, and cover crops and tillage had limited effect on cumulative drainage volumes. Notably, NT-rye altered the relationship between drainage volume and nitrate losses by reducing nitrate concentrations, lowering nitrate losses by 59 ±9% compared with CP-oat and 67 ± 9% compared with NT. Neither cover crop nor tillage consistently affected N2 O emissions or crop yield. Rather, N2 O emissions were closely tied with fertilizer N application and seasonal weather patterns. These findings indicate that nitrate leaching and N2 O emissions are regulated by separate mechanisms, so conservation management may require stacking multiple practices to be effective.


Both subsurface nitrate losses and nitrous oxide emissions were linked with weather. Subsurface nitrate losses were linked with cumulative annual drainage. Nitrous oxide emissions were linked with fertilizer N applications. Rye cover crop with no-till reduced nitrate losses with no yield declines.

BACKGROUND: The way movement-based exercises affect targeted muscles is not always obvious. Side stepping with an elastic band around the forefeet is aimed at strengthening hip abductors and lateral rotator muscles, with the premise that it creates an external torque of adduction and medial rotation of the femur around the pelvis that needs to be counteracted by hip muscles. However, hip torques during this exercise have not been previously quantified. RESEARCH QUESTION: Is the premise that the side-stepping exercise creates an external torque of adduction and medial rotation of the femur around the pelvis correct? METHODS: Thirty-six adults performed the exercise in an upright and a squat posture while 3D kinetic and kinematic data were collected. Hip muscle torques were calculated using inverse dynamics. The effect of posture and potential interactions with sex, side-stepping phases, and trailing/leading directions were analyzed using Pearson correlation and mixed-model ANOVAs. RESULT: A hip net muscle torque of extension, abduction and medial rotation was required to perform the exercise, regardless of phase and direction. The net muscle torque towards medial rotation required during the exercise was smaller (P < 0.001) in the upright (0.05-0.12 N m kg-1 m-1 across phases) compared to the squat posture (0.10-0.24 N m kg-1 m-1). In contrast, hip abductor torque was not affected by posture. When averaged across phases and directions, the normalized hip medial rotator muscle torque was highly correlated with knee flexion (r = 0.93, P < 0.001). SIGNIFICANCE: The assumption that the side-stepping with the elastic band on the forefeet creates an external hip torque of medial rotation is erroneous. The resistance imposed to the hip during this exercise is consistent with the goal of strengthening the muscles that contribute to hip abduction and hip medial (not lateral) rotation. Changing the knee flexion angle is an effective way to manipulate hip rotator torque when prescribing this exercise in strength training and rehabilitation programs.

This is a cross-sectional study conducted with pregnant women who underwent prenatal care at basic health units in São Luís City, Maranhão State, Brazil. The authors used a semistructured questionnaire to assess the socioeconomic, demographic, and clinical characteristics of pregnant women as well as the Edinburgh Scale to investigate depressive symptoms. In order to assess the association between the explanatory variable and the outcome variable, Poisson logistic regression was performed with statistical significance at p < 0.05. A total of 205 women were interviewed, most aged between 18 and 29 years (66.83%). Of this total, 74.63% had not planned their pregnancy and 26.67% had depressive symptoms. The variables unplanned pregnancy (PR = 1.41; CI = 0.99−2.00; p = 0.05) and not undergoing psychological counseling (PR = 1.42; CI = 0.51−0.83; p ≤ 0.01) correlated with depressive symptoms during pregnancy. It is thus possible to link the variables unplanned pregnancy (p > 0.05) and not undergoing psychological counseling (p = 0.001) to depression. Therefore, it is important to monitor the mental health of pregnant women, especially in situations of vulnerability.

BACKGROUND: Neurological viral infection is frequently associated to enterovirus, herpesvirus and arboviruses. These infections may cause severe clinical outcomes, long lasting sequelae or death. Few studies have addressed viral neurological infections etiology in Brazil. OBJECTIVES: Identification of viruses in the cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) of human neurological infections suspected of viral etiology during January and May 2019 in Midwestern Brazil. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Clinical, laboratory and epidemiological information was gathered from medical records. In addition, an aliquot of the sampled CSF was subjected to viral RNA/DNA extraction, randomic dscDNA amplification by PCR, DNA purification and Ilumina HiSeq 2500 sequencing. RESULTS: Six viral genomes belonging to Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) East-Central-South African (ECSA) genotype (10.834-11.804 nt in length) confirmed lately by RT-PCR for CHIKV envelope were present in all six liquor samples. These genomes present two mutations, nsP2:T31I and nsP3:A388V, shared with other Mato Grosso State strains from 2019, not present in sequences of the virus from previous years obtained in the State. One case was a triple co-infection also confirmed through RT-PCR, with Dengue virus serotype 4 genotype II (NS5; 874 nt) and Oropouche virus genotype IA (segment S; 302 nt). CSF was clear and colorless (5/6 patients), with >10% of lymphomononuclear cells (6/6), 1-99 erythrocytes/mm3 (5/6), glucose levels >50 mg/dl (4/5) e > 10 mg/dl of proteins (4/4). One patient evolved to death, and another, a newborn, presented sequelae after recovery. CONCLUSIONS: Despite herpesviruses and enteroviruses are frequent etiologies of neurological infections, the casuistic here reported was associated to arboviruses already known to be responsible for acute febrile illness outbreaks in the state of Mato Grosso, Midwestern Brazil.

Anophelinae is a widely dispersed Culicidae subfamily that may carry a unique virome. Here we herein report the set of viruses found in 323 salivary glands of 16 anopheline species sampled at Upper Pantanal, Chapada dos Guimarães National Park and Coxipó river basin, South Central Mato Grosso, Brazil, pooled (n = 11) and subjected to high throughput sequencing. Metagenomics revealed the presence of nine viral sequences belonging to novel viruses from seven viral families: Purunga is a putative novel orbivirus sharing 74% and 65% aa identity, respectively, with the VP1 and VP3 segments of Changuinola serogroup, Jaracatiá flavivirus shares 60% amino-acid (aa) identity with Aedes flavivirus. Coxipó dielmovirus and Chapada dielmovirus shared 51% and 39% aa identity with Merida virus. Coloiado-orthomyxo like virus is 57.1-64.8% identical at aa level to Aedes albonnulatus orthomyxo-like virus. Mujica picorna-like virus shares 49% aa identity with Flen picorna-like virus and Chiquitos virus is 50% similar to Ista virus, both from Picornavirales order. Cerrado partiti-like-virus shares 75-86% aa identity with Atrato partiti-like virus 2. We also found the S and L segments of Anopheles triannulatus orthophasmavirus (92% identity) in Anopheles lutzi from Chapada dos Guimarães. The identification of these putative novel viruses underscore the wide dispersion of viruses in culicid hosts contributing to extensions on mosquito virome descriptions.
