RESUMEN

Agricultural management using technologies that help farmers increase productivity and reduce production costs must be promoted to ensure agricultural sustainability. The objective of the study was to achieve the pH effect of growth solution, chemical treatment, use of osmoprotector additive and mineral nitrate presence, on the activity of growth promoting bacteria, Azospirillum brasilense, and its effects on the physiological quality of seeds and wheat seedling growth. The first experiment evaluated the physiological quality of seeds and the second experiment was divided into four, evaluating the growth of wheat seedling in a hydroponic system. The experiments were prolonged in a very randomized design, with four replications. The physiological quality of the seeds was evaluated by germination tests, first germination count, length of the shoot and root and dry mass of the shoot and root. Initial growth was evaluated by quantifying the dry mass of the leaf shoot and root and the root system intervals. The pH of the solution and the presence of nitrogen did not influence the effects of inoculation of the A. brasilense bacteria. With the use of chemical treatment and osmoprotective additive, A. brasilense had no effect on the growth of wheat seedlings.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: To investigate the effects of hypercholesterolemic diet on the collagen composition of urinary bladder wall. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-five female 4-week-old Wistar rats were divided into three groups: 1) control group fed a normal diet (ND); 2) model of bladder outlet obstruction (BOO) group fed a ND; and 3) group fed a HCD (1.25% cholesterol). Total serum cholesterol, LDL cholesterol and body weight were assessed at baseline. Four weeks later, group 2 underwent a surgical procedure resulting in a partial BOO, while groups 1 and 3 underwent a sham similar surgical procedure. Six weeks later, all animals had their bladders removed; serum cholesterol and LDL cholesterol levels and body weights were measured. Morphological and morphometric analysis was performed by Picrosirius staining and collagen types I and III were identified by immunofluorescence. Statistical analysis was completed and significance was considered when p<0.05. RESULTS: Rats fed an HCD exhibited a significant increase in LDL cholesterol levels (p<0.001) and body weight (p=0.017), when compared to the groups fed a ND during the ten-week study period. Moreover, the HCD induced morphological alterations of the bladder wall collagen, regarding thin collagen fibers and the amounts of type III collagen when compared to the control group (p=0.002 and p=0.016, respectively), resembling the process promoted in the BOO model. CONCLUSIONS: A hyper-cholesterolemic diet in Wistar rats promoted morphological changes of the bladder types of collagen, as well as increases in body weight and LDL cholesterol.

One hundred and ninety five Pampa horses and a control group of 41 Paint Horses originated from herds located in different Brazilian regions were used to objective of evaluate the efficiency of the biochemical markers albumin (Al) and vitamin D binding protein (Gc) to identify the probable homozygous dominant for the tobiano coat color pattern in Pampa horses. It was not found any genotype AlBB and GcSS, indicating a possible break of the genetic linkage between these loci and the locus Tobiano, as well as the inefficacy of the biochemical test in the detection of the probable homozygous dominant for the tobiano color pattern in Pampa horses

RESUMEN

Purified samples of tetanus toxin were gradually iodinated by stepwise addition of iodine, up to saturation. The residual capacity of each sample to provoke tetanus was tested by injecting sc 25 Lf (Limit of flocculation) in mice. Toxicity diminished in relation to iodine incorporated, and with iodine-saturated samples, doses of up to 100 Lf in mice, or 500 Lf in guinea-pigs, proved innocuous. Mice immunized with two doses of this toxoid adsorbed on Al(OH)3, and challenged with standard lethal toxin, gained protection against 10 MLD (Minimum Lethal Doses). Guinea-pigs were immunized by a single sc dose of 27.5 Lf with fluid toxoid, and all resisted challenge against 10 MLD applied 30 days later. The mice sera gave strong immunoprecipitation lines against the native toxin. The findings indicated that by controlled iodination of tetanus toxin an effective and inexpensive toxoid can be prepared.

RESUMEN

An enzyme which is able to liberate angiotensin II from angiotensin I, angiotensinogen(1-14) fragment and angiotensinogen was purified from human submandibular gland. Its molecular weight is 110,000; is inhibited by PMSF but not by EDTA or enalaprilat. The pH optima for angiotensin II liberation were 4.0 for angiotensin I, 7.0 for angiotensinogen(1-14) fragment and 8.0 for angiotensinogen. The total amount of angiotensin II generating activity in the human submandibular gland is 5,000-times smaller than that in the rat gland.
