RESUMEN

Al-alloys with Si as the main alloying element constitute the vast majority of Al castings used commercially today. The eutectic Si microstructure in these alloys can be modified from plate-like to coral-like by the addition of a small amount of a third element to improve ductility and toughness. In this investigation the effects of Eu and Yb are studied and their influence on the microstructure is compared to further understand this modification. The two elements impact the alloy differently, where Eu modifies Si into a coral-like structure while Yb does not. Atom probe tomography shows that Eu is present within the Si phase in the form of ternary compound Al2Si2Eu clusters, while Yb is absent in the Si phase. This indicates that the presence of ternary compound clusters within Si is a necessary condition for the formation of a coral-like structure. A crystallographic orientation relationship between Si and the Al2Si2Eu phase was found, where the following plane normals are parallel: 011Si//0001Al2Si2Eu, 111Si//6[Formula: see text]10Al2Si2Eu and 011Si//6[Formula: see text]10Al2Si2Eu. No crystallographic relationship was found between Si and Al2Si2Yb. The heterogeneous formation of coherent Al2Si2Eu clusters inside the Si-phase is suggested to trigger the modification of the microstructure.

RESUMEN

A catalytically active nanoassembly comprising Cu-nanoparticles grown on integrated and active supports (large pore Zr-doped mesoporous SBA-15 silica) has been synthesized and used to promote CO2 hydrogenation. The doped mesoporous material was synthesized using a sol-gel method, in which the pore size was tuned between 11 and 15 nm while maintaining a specific surface area of about 700 m2 g-1. The subsequent Cu nanoparticle growth was achieved by an infiltration process involving attachment of different functional groups on the external and internal surfaces of the mesoporous structure such that 7-10 nm sized Cu nanoparticles grew preferentially inside the pores. Chemisorption showed improved absorption of both CO2 and H2 for the assembly compared to pure SBA-15 and 15% of the total CO2 was converted to methanol and dimethyl ether at 250 °C and 33 bar.

RESUMEN

In this study, mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSPs) of different size and shape were developed, and their surface coatings were utilized to study their differential effects in enhancing antibacterial activity. In brief, MSPs with three different aspect ratios (1, 2 and 4) were prepared, doped with silver ions and finally coated with the polymer chitosan. Both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria were treated with the MSPs. Results indicate that silver ion doped and chitosan coated MSPs with the aspect ratio of 4 (Cht/MSP4:Ag+) have the highest antimicrobial activity among the prepared series. Further studies revealed that Cht/MSP4:Ag+ was most effective against Escherichia coli (E.coli) and least effective against Vibrio cholerae (V. cholerae). To investigate the detailed inhibition mechanism of the MSPs, the interaction of the nanoparticles with E.coli membranes and its intracellular DNA was assessed using various spectroscopic and imaging-based techniques. Furthermore, to increase the efficiency of the MSPs, a combinatorial antibacterial strategy was also explored, where nanoparticles, in combination with kanamycin (antibiotic), were used against Vibrio Cholerae (V. cholerae). Toxicity screening of these on MSPs was conducted on Caco-2 cells, and the results show that the dose used for antibacterial screening is below the limit of the toxicity threshold. Our findings show that both shape and surface engineering contribute positively towards killing bacteria, and the newly developed silver ion-doped and chitosan-coated MSPs have good potential as antimicrobial nanomaterials.

RESUMEN

We present an industry-relevant, large-scale, ultra-high vacuum (UHV) magnetron sputtering and cathodic arc deposition system purposefully designed for time-resolved in situ thin film deposition/annealing studies using high-energy (>50 keV), high photon flux (>10(12) ph/s) synchrotron radiation. The high photon flux, combined with a fast-acquisition-time (<1 s) two-dimensional (2D) detector, permits time-resolved in situ structural analysis of thin film formation processes. The high-energy synchrotron-radiation based x-rays result in small scattering angles (<11°), allowing large areas of reciprocal space to be imaged with a 2D detector. The system has been designed for use on the 1-tonne, ultra-high load, high-resolution hexapod at the P07 High Energy Materials Science beamline at PETRA III at the Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron in Hamburg, Germany. The deposition system includes standard features of a typical UHV deposition system plus a range of special features suited for synchrotron radiation studies and industry-relevant processes. We openly encourage the materials research community to contact us for collaborative opportunities using this unique and versatile scientific instrument.

RESUMEN

A major source of uncertainty in compositional measurements in atom probe tomography stems from the uncertainties of assigning peaks or parts of peaks in the mass spectrum to their correct identities. In particular, peak overlap is a limiting factor, whereas an ideal mass spectrum would have peaks at their correct positions with zero broadening. Here, we report a method to deconvolute the experimental mass spectrum into such an ideal spectrum and a system function describing the peak broadening introduced by the field evaporation and detection of each ion. By making the assumption of a linear and time-invariant behavior, a system of equations is derived that describes the peak shape and peak intensities. The model is fitted to the observed spectrum by minimizing the squared residuals, regularized by the maximum entropy method. For synthetic data perfectly obeying the assumptions, the method recovered peak intensities to within ±0.33 at%. The application of this model to experimental APT data is exemplified with Fe-Cr data. Knowledge of the peak shape opens up several new possibilities, not just for better overall compositional determination, but, e.g., for the estimation of errors of ranging due to peak overlap or peak separation constrained by isotope abundances.

RESUMEN

The synthesis of spherical copper nanoparticles with extremely narrow size distribution by electroless copper deposition on mesoporous silica support is described. The materials were characterized by nitrogen sorption, transmission electron microscopy, x-ray diffractometry and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The copper nanoparticles have a cubic crystalline structure and an average particle size of 5.5 +/- 0.8 nm. The copper nanoparticles are stable, without detectable oxidation or further agglomeration under ambient conditions even after months. These results demonstrate that electroless copper reduction can be conducted and constrained within the mesoporous silica framework, which pave the way for engineered mesoreactors.

RESUMEN

Analysis of data from 82 Veterans Affairs medical centers showed that during a one-year period in 1987-88, VA psychiatric inpatients spent about 240,000 hours in seclusion or restraint, with about half of that time in mechanical restraints. The median length of time patients in each medical center spent in seclusion and restraint was used to classify centers as having "higher" or "usual" rates of use of those techniques. In the 20 centers classified as higher users, patients spent two to three times longer in seclusion and restraint per incident than patients in the 62 centers classified as usual users. Time spent by patients in seclusion and restraint in centers with usual rates of use was consistent with reports from other U.S. studies. The longer time in seclusion and restraint per incident in higher-user centers may be due to characteristics of the medical center or of the patient population.

RESUMEN

Coagulation, fibrinolytic, kallikrein, and complement systems were studied in 20 patients with multiple trauma. Three of four patients with a trauma score less than 10 on hospital arrival died, compared to one of 16 with a score over 10. Five patients developed disseminated intravascular coagulation. Signs of activated cascade systems were evident in most patients on hospital arrival. Changes were not related to trauma score, but patients with an arterial pressure below 110 mm Hg had significantly lower levels of antithrombin III and alpha 2-antiplasmin than those with higher BP. This study confirms that the cascade systems are activated very soon after multiple trauma.
