RESUMEN

Exciton interactions are not only observed in assembled molecules but also in compounds with multiple chromophores referred to as superchromophores. We have developed isomeric bis-squaraine dyes as superchromophores in which two squaraine chromophores are fused onto the isomeric benzodipyrrole skeleton so as to regulate conformations and to reduce distances between two chromophores. The dyes with benzo[1,2-b:3,4-b']dipyrrole and benzo[1,2-b:5,4-b']dipyrrole moieties exhibited split electronic absorption originated from the intramolecular exciton interaction. The intensity of the split absorption bands varies in correlation with the orientation of chromophores. The isomeric dye with benzo[1,2-b:4,5-b']dipyrrole moiety exhibited a near-infrared absorption associated with the resonance throughout two chromophores. Their electrochemical and spectroelectrochemical properties are distinct from those of monomeric dyes owing to electronic interactions between the two chromophores. Thus, the structural isomerism of the central skeleton significantly affects their optical properties as well as their electrochemical properties.

RESUMEN

AIM: Although decreased level of consciousness (DLOC) while driving may lead to serious accidents involving drivers and people around them, including passengers and pedestrians, few studies have assessed traffic injuries attributable to preceding DLOC. We aimed to identify factors suggestive of a DLOC preceding traffic injury during initial examination. METHODS: This study included 193 drivers who were brought to our facility during the 1-year period from January to December 2018. The drivers were divided into those with and without DLOC for comparison and analysis. Data on age, sex, causes of DLOC, and medical history were retrospectively reviewed from medical records. RESULTS: Of these 193 drivers, 58 (30.1%) had experienced preceding DLOC. The following factors suggested possible episodes of preceding DLOC: a single-vehicle accident (odds ratio [OR] 3.59; 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.76-7.34; P < 0.001) and histories of hypertension (OR 2.64; 95% CI 1.13-6.15; P = 0.0248) and psychiatric disorders (OR 3.49; 95% CI 1.08-11.3; P = 0.0370). The causes of DLOC were endogenous diseases in 20 drivers (34.3%), dozing off episodes in 19 (32.8%), and acute alcohol intoxication in 11 (19.0%). CONCLUSION: Before traffic accidents, 30.1% of drivers experienced DLOC. Single-vehicle accidents and histories of hypertension and psychiatric disorders were factors suggestive of preceding DLOC.

RESUMEN

Rhabdomyolysis is a relatively common and life-threatening disease that is sometimes complicated by acute kidney injury (AKI). Several causes have been reported, divided into traumatic and non-traumatic causes. We herein report a patient with rhabdomyolysis with AKI caused by bilateral iliopsoas hematoma. This patient had atrial fibrillation that was poorly controlled with warfarin, and bilateral iliopsoas hematoma was caused by turnover without a history of high-energy injury. Treatment with the rapid neutralization of warfarin improved his clinical condition without complications. We should pay close attention to episodes of turnover among elderly patients receiving anticoagulant therapy.

RESUMEN

Inexpensive high-resolution silicon (Si) X-ray detectors are required for on-site surveys of traces of hazardous elements in food and soil by measuring the energies and counts of X-ray fluorescence photons radially emitted from these elements. Gated silicon drift detectors (GSDDs) are much cheaper to fabricate than commercial silicon drift detectors (SDDs). However, previous GSDDs were fabricated from 10-kΩ·cm Si wafers, which are more expensive than 2-kΩ·cm Si wafers used in commercial SDDs. To fabricate cheaper portable X-ray fluorescence instruments, we investigate GSDDs formed from 2-kΩ·cm Si wafers. The thicknesses of commercial SDDs are up to 0.5 mm, which can detect photons with energies up to 27 keV, whereas we describe GSDDs that can detect photons with energies of up to 35 keV. We simulate the electric potential distributions in GSDDs with Si thicknesses of 0.5 and 1 mm at a single high reverse bias. GSDDs with one gate pattern using any resistivity Si wafer can work well for changing the reverse bias that is inversely proportional to the resistivity of the Si wafer.

RESUMEN

This paper introduces a new design and application for direct volume manipulation for visualizing the intraoperative liver resection process. So far, interactive volume deformation and resection have been independently handled due to the difficulty of representing elastic behavior of volumetric objects. Our framework models global shape editing and discontinuous local deformation by merging proxy geometry encoding and displacement mapping. A local-frame-based elastic model is presented to allow stable editing of the liver shape including bending and twisting while preserving the volume. Several tests using clinical CT data have confirmed the developed software and interface can represent the intraoperative state of liver and produce local views of reference vascular structures, which provides a "road map of vessels" that are key features when approaching occluded tumors during surgery.
