RESUMEN

The influence of hepatic larval Taenia taeniaeformis infection on gastric acid secretory activity and gastric mucosal integrity was investigated. After 12 weeks of infection with 2,000 T. taeniaeformis eggs, the gastric pH values of control and infected rats were 4.1+/-0.6 (mean +/- SD) and 8.4+/-0.2, respectively. There was no difference in the basal acid secretion between control (1.7+/-0.7 micro Eq.H(+)/15 min) and infected (1.9+/-0.3) rats. However, infected rats failed to respond to histamine stimulation, the maximum acid output level being 2.8+/-0.4 in the infected rats, compared to 12.9+/-3.3 in control rats. Larval T. taeniaeformis infection resulted in the suppression of gastric acid secretion leading to hypergastrinemia.

RESUMEN

Heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoproteins (hnRNPs) A2 and B1 are abundant nuclear proteins that bind to nascent RNAs synthesized by RNA polymerase II. Previously we had found that the splicing isoforms hnRNP B0a/b, from which the ninth exon of the A2/B1 gene is excluded, are abundantly expressed in testis. We postulated that B0a/b are testis-specific isoforms, and investigated the expression of A2/B1 and B0a/b in rat tissues and in postnatal development of rat testes using RNase protection assay, immunoblotting, and immunohistochemistry. We found that hnRNP B0a/b mRNAs are expressed in several tissues but that the testis alone expresses B0a/b proteins. A sequential study using neonatal rat testes demonstrated that B0a/b mRNAs are produced after 17 days of age, but not translated until 4 weeks of age when round spermatids appear in addition to spermatogonia and spermatocytes. Immunohistochemically, hnRNP A2/B1 isoforms are expressed during spermatogenesis from spermatogonia through round spermatids, whereas the expression of A1 is restricted to spermatogonia. This expression pattern in the rat testis is maintained from birth through adulthood. These results suggest that the expression of the hnRNP A2/B1 gene is partly regulated by a testis-specific post-transcriptional mechanism, and that the products of the A2/B1 gene, especially hnRNP B0a/b, are involved in spermatogenesis.

RESUMEN

Laboratory matings were attempted to establish breeding colonies of Northern grasshopper mice, Onychomys leucogaster (which were captured in New Mexico, U.S.A.), as experimental animals. The results were as follows. The rate of pregnancy was 75% with cohabitation for more than 30 days, and 4% with cohabitation from 1 to 7 days. Both cases were of monogamous mating. The mean litter size was 3.5 +/- 1.2, with a range of 1 to 6. The rate of weaning was 78.8%. The mean gestation period was 27.4 +/- 2.0 days, with a range of 25 to 31. The gestation period was achieved by the method of confirming sperm from smears. Further, it was possible to breed all year round in a rearing room with fixed temperature and humidity.
