RESUMEN

This study aimed to determine the association between demographic factors, body size, and fruit and vegetable intake in the general population, focusing on individuals with both low and high skin carotenoid levels. This cross-sectional study was conducted during the 14th National Convention on the Promotion of Food and Nutrition Education (2019) in Yamanashi, Japan (a rural area) and the Open House 2019 at the National Institute of Biomedical Innovation, Health, and Nutrition in Tokyo, Japan (an urban area). Skin carotenoid measurements were conducted, and the participants were asked to fill out a self-administered questionnaire. The study population consisted of 492 Japanese individuals aged ≥16 years. The odds ratios (ORs) for low skin carotenoid levels were elevated in males, those who were overweight, and those who almost never consumed or consumed only one vegetable dish/day. Conversely, the ORs were lower in those living in Yamanashi, aged 30-39 and ≥70 years, and those who consumed fruit ≥1 time/week. For high skin carotenoid levels, the ORs were higher among those aged ≥70 years, living in Yamanashi, and those who consumed fruit ≥1 time/day or ≥5 vegetable dishes/day. Demographic factors, body size, and habitual fruit and vegetable intake may serve as indicators of skin carotenoid levels.

AIM: This study investigated the associations of the surface charge of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) with the serum LDL-cholesterol and atherosclerosis levels in a community-based Japanese population. METHODS: The study had a cross-sectional design and included 409 community residents aged 35-79 years who did not take medications for dyslipidemia. The potential electric charge of LDL and the zeta potential, which indicate the surface charge of LDL, were measured by laser Doppler microelectrophoresis. The correlations of the zeta potential of LDL (-mV) with the serum LDL-cholesterol levels (mg/dL), cardio-ankle vascular index (CAVI), and serum high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP) levels (log-transformed values, mg/L) were examined using Pearson's correlation coefficient (r). Linear regression models were constructed to examine these associations after adjusting for potential confounding factors. RESULTS: A total of 201 subjects with correctly stored samples were included in the primary analysis for zeta potential measurement. An inverse correlation was observed between the LDL zeta potential and the serum LDL-cholesterol levels (r=-0.20; p=0.004). This inverse association was observed after adjusting for sex, age, dietary cholesterol intake, smoking status, alcohol intake, body mass index, and the serum levels of the major classes of free fatty acids (standardized ß=-6.94; p=0.005). However, the zeta potential of LDL showed almost no association with CAVI or the serum hsCRP levels. Similar patterns were observed in the 208 subjects with compromised samples as well as all the original 409 subjects. CONCLUSION: A higher electronegative surface charge of LDL was associated with lower serum LDL-cholesterol levels in the general Japanese population.

This study aimed to examine the relationship between the frequency of household shared meals and the intake of 17 food groups and 21 nutrients. Participants were 3310 men and 3386 women ≥20 years old living in a household of ≥2 members from 2018 and 2019 National Health and Nutrition Surveys in Japan. A one-day household dietary record was used to classify an individual's shared meal frequency and dietary intake. A shared meal is defined as an eating occasion (i.e., breakfast, lunch, and dinner) where ≥1 food item-other than sugars, fats and oils, beverages, and condiments-was recorded with an assigned approximated shared proportion. The shared meal frequency for each individual was classified into one of four categories: 0, 1, 2, and 3 times/day. Dietary intake was compared across the shared meal categories adjusted for age, occupation, household size, meal skipping, snacking, residential areas, and within-household correlations. Both men and women who had more frequent shared meals showed higher intakes of potatoes, vegetables, mushrooms, and condiments but less confectioneries and beverages. A higher shared meal frequency was also related to a higher intake of many (12/21) nutrients (e.g., protein, dietary fiber, and potassium). However, in women, there was a positive association between shared meal frequency and sodium intake. A higher frequency of household shared meals may be related to a more favorable dietary intake; except for concerns about sodium intake in women.

This study aimed to compare the differences in the intake of food groups and nutrients between Japanese adults who consumed the recommended daily vegetable intake (350 g/day) and those who did not. Dietary information was obtained from one-day dietary records collected from the 2016 National Health and Nutrition Survey, which was conducted in 46 prefectures in Japan. The participants aged ≥20 years (n = 21,606; 53.8% women) were classified into the < and ≥350 g/day groups. Inter-group differences for 17 food groups and 27 nutrients were assessed as percentages of consumers (food groups only) and energy-adjusted intake (units/MJ/d or % of total energy intake). Overall, 29% of participants consumed ≥350 g/day of vegetables. The ≥350 g/day group had a higher percentage of consumers and energy-adjusted intakes for all vegetable subgroups than the <350 g/day group. For other food groups, the ≥350 g/day group had higher percentages of consumers for all food groups, except for cereals, eggs, and condiments and seasonings, which showed no significant differences. However, the ≥350 g/day group had a significantly higher energy-adjusted intake for potatoes and other tubers, mushrooms, meats, and condiments and seasonings but a significantly lower value for cereals, eggs, savoury snacks and confectionaries, and beverages. The ≥350 g/day group had a significantly higher intake of almost all (25/27) nutrients, including sodium, than the <350 g/day group. Participants with vegetable intake ≥350 g/day might have a more favourable intake of food groups and nutrients; however, watching for salt intake is necessary when promoting vegetable intake.

This scoping review aimed to identify questionnaire-based dietary assessment methods for use in the National Health and Nutrition Survey (NHNS) in Japan. The search was conducted in three databases (PubMed, Web of Science, and Ichushi) to identify questionnaire such as food frequency questionnaire and dietary history questionnaire validated against dietary recalls or food records for the intakes of both food groups and nutrients among Japanese adults. Study quality was assessed based on previously developed criteria. We extracted the questionnaire characteristics and the design and results of the validation studies. We identified 11 questionnaires, with the number of food items ranging from 40 to 196, from 32 articles of good quality. In the validation studies, participants were aged 30-76 years and 90% of the articles used ≥3 d dietary records as reference. The number of nutrients and food groups with a group-level intake difference within 20% against the reference method ranged from 1 to 30 and 1 to 11, respectively. The range of mean correlation coefficients between questionnaire and reference methods were 0.35-0.57 for nutrients and 0.28-0.52 for food groups. When selecting a survey instrument in the NHNS from the 11 existing questionnaires identified in this study, it is important to select one with high group-level comparison and correlation coefficient values on the intended assessment items after scrutinizing the design and results of the validation study. This review may serve as a reference for future studies that explore dietary assessment tools used for assessing dietary intake in specific representative populations.

Microsporum canis is a type of dermatophyte that causes zoonotic dermatophytosis in cats and dogs. We report three cases of tinea corporis due to M. canis from a single household with a domestic cat as a pet. The cases included a woman in her thirties (mother), a girl in her teens (older sister), and a girl in her teens (younger sister). Following sudden hair loss in the domestic cat, annular erythema with pruritus and scales appeared on the face, neck, and limbs of the older sister, younger sister, and mother, sequentially; they subsequently visited our hospital. Potassium hydroxide direct microscopy revealed filamentous fungi on all three women. In addition, short-haired colonies with a white to yellowish-white color and extending in a radial manner were found in cultures using a flat plate agar medium. A slide culture with the same medium indicated pointed spindle-shaped macroconidia with 7-8 septa. Therefore, the cases were diagnosed as tinea corporis due to M. canis. Genetic analysis of the cells of the cat and the mother, older sister, and younger sister using multilocus microsatellite typing (MLMT) indicated that all cases were classified into the same genotype, suggesting that the transmission route of these cases was familial. Here, we show that MLMT is useful in identifying the infection route in cases of tinea corporis due to M. canis.

BACKGROUND: We aimed to clarify whether differences in food group intake according to household income have changed over the last decade in Japanese people aged 20 years or older. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was based on the 2010, 2014, and 2018 National Health and Nutrition Surveys in Japan. Food intake was assessed using a 1-day semi-weighed household dietary record. The participants were categorized into three groups based on their income. The mean of each food intake according to the income group was estimated by adjusting for age, occupation, and number of participants from the same household. The significance of the interaction terms between income and survey year was evaluated to assess the change in income-related differences in food intake over time. RESULTS: Cereal intake was lower in the middle- and the highest-income groups than in the lowest-income group, regardless of sex, and the interaction between income and year was nonsignificant for cereal intake. In the former two surveys, vegetable intake was higher among the highest-income women, while in the 2018 survey, the vegetable intake decreased in the women in the middle- and the highest-income groups. The interaction between income and year was significant for vegetable intake among the women. For other foods, the differences in intake among the income groups did not significantly change over time. CONCLUSION: The tendency for lower cereal intake in the higher-income groups was consistent over time in both the sexes, and the tendency for higher vegetable intake in the highest income women disappeared over time.

RESUMEN

Development of an accurate and efficient dietary method is required for national nutrition surveys. Some countries conduct dietary surveys and combine 24-h dietary records or 24-h dietary recalls with dietary questionnaires. This scoping review aimed to summarize studies that used results from national surveys that combined detailed dietary surveys (dietary records or 24-h dietary recall) and dietary questionnaires and identify the purpose of combining the two methods. The PubMed database and manual searches were used for the literature review. We extracted 58 articles from 16 national nutrition surveys from 14 countries. Most studies used 24-h dietary recall for detailed dietary surveys and the food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) or food propensity questionnaire (FPQ) for questionnaire surveys. Among 37 studies from eight countries, the purpose of combining the two dietary survey methods was to estimate energy and nutrient intakes from detailed dietary surveys and habitual food intake from questionnaires. These findings are useful as a reference when introducing new dietary survey methods in future national nutrition surveys.

Objectives Monitoring of obesity and underweight prevalence in general populations is crucial for the implementation of effective public health measures. Self-reported height and weight values are often used to assess the body mass index (BMI) in such epidemiological surveillance. However, it is known that using self-reported height and weight may underestimate the prevalence of obesity (BMI≥25 kg/m2), while its accuracy for underweight (BMI<18.5 kg/m2) prevalence is not well-understood. The aim of this study was to conduct a scoping review on the accuracy of self-reported anthropometrics in the Japanese population, where both obesity and underweight are prevalent.Methods Using PubMed and CiNii Research, a literature search was conducted for studies published in English or Japanese by 2022 that were conducted in Japan and compared self-reported and measured height, weight, or/and BMI. The study design and mean reported errors (mean of reported values-mean of measured values) were extracted and tabulated, and differences by BMI categories were also considered.Results A total of 17 studies, with 11 being published in English, were included in this review. These studies were conducted in nationwide cohort studies (n=4), local populations (n=4), workplaces (n=3), and educational institutions (n=6), with diverse age ranges (10-91 years) and sample sizes (<100 to >30,000). Although the degree of mean reporting error varied between studies, most of the studies reported that height was overreported, weight was underreported, and BMI was underestimated. In the three studies that reported mean reporting errors by BMI category, the direction of reporting error for height remained consistent across all body size categories, while weight and BMI were overreported and overestimated only among the underweight. Four studies in adults showed that 14.2-37.6% of actually obese individuals and 11.1-32.3% of underweight individuals were misclassified as 'normal range' (18.5≤BMI<25 kg/m2) based on self-reporting, while 0.8-5.4% and 1.2-4.1% of individuals actually within the normal range were misclassified as 'underweight' and 'obese' based on self-report, respectively.Conclusion This study suggests that using BMI based on self-reported height and weight can underestimate the prevalence of both obesity and underweight in the Japanese population. These biases should be taken into consideration when using self-reported anthropometrics in epidemiological studies.

The Japanese diet has attracted attention as a factor contributing to the Japanese population's longevity. A typical Japanese meal, traditionally called "ichiju-sansai," is composed of various dishes. This study assessed the nutritional adequacy of the Japanese diet using the number of dishes in all meals (NDAM) compared to existing dietary diversity indices (DDIs). This cross-sectional study used data from the 2012 National Health and Nutrition Survey. A total of 25,976 participants aged ≥20 y were included in this study. NDAM was calculated for whole dishes or single foods (except supplements and beverages) from one-day weighted dietary records. The food variety score (FVS), number of foods, dietary diversity score (DDS), and number of food groups are some of the existing DDIs. NDAM had relatively high positive correlation coefficients with potassium, magnesium, and dietary fiber. The partial correlation coefficients with an indicator of the overall nutrient adequacy of NDAM was 0.42 for men and 0.42 for women. It was almost the same as that of the FVS (men: 0.44, women: 0.42) and DDS (men: 0.44, women: 0.43). On the other hand, NDAM, similar to existing DDIs, was also positively correlated with nutrient restriction in both sexes. These findings indicate that the nutrient adequacy of NDAM is similar to that of the existing DDIs. Because of the higher sodium intake and cholesterol intake in higher NDAM and existing DDIs, the effect of higher NDAM on health outcomes must be investigated in future studies.

The goal was to summarize studies comparing the accuracy of web-based dietary assessments with those of conventional face-to-face or paper-based assessments using 24-h dietary recall or dietary record methods in the general population. Using two databases, mean differences and correlation coefficients (CCs) for intakes of energy, macronutrients, sodium, vegetables, and fruits were extracted from each study independently by the authors. We also collected information regarding usability from articles reporting this. From 17 articles included in this review, the mean dietary intake differences in the web-based dietary assessment compared to conventional methods, were -11.5-16.1% for energy, -12.1-14.9% for protein, -16.7-17.6% for fat, -10.8-8.0% for carbohydrates, -11.2-9.6% for sodium, -27.4-3.9% for vegetables, and -5.1-47.6% for fruits. The CC was 0.17-0.88 for energy, protein, fat, carbohydrates, and sodium, and 0.23-0.85 for vegetables and fruits. In three out of four studies reporting usability, more than half of the participants preferred the web-based dietary assessment. In conclusion, % difference and CC of dietary intake were acceptable in both web-based dietary records and 24-h dietary recalls. The findings from this review highlight the possibility of wide-spread application of the web-based dietary assessment in the future.

Our study aimed to demonstrate the association between physical activity (PA) and frailty incidence among Japanese community-dwelling older adults with a narrow age range of 70-74 years. This study included 485 participants from the Japan Gerontological Evaluation Study. Frailty was assessed at baseline and 3 years later by using the Kaigo-Yobo Checklist. PA was assessed using the short-term International PA Questionnaire at baseline. Logistic regression was performed to calculate the odds ratio with 95% confidence intervals after adjusting for potential confounders. The associations of frailty scores with both PA volume and daily walking time presented a U-shaped curve, albeit only the latter was statistically significant. After adjusting for potential confounders, walking for 0.5-1 hr/day displayed a greater association with decreased frailty risk than higher levels of daily walking time. Further study is needed to cumulate the evidence that moderate PA levels may delay frailty incidence and improve the aging process.

Sleep is essential for our health. Short sleep is known to increase disease risks via imbalance of intestinal microbiota, dysbiosis. However, mechanisms by which short sleep induces dysbiosis remain unknown. Small intestinal Paneth cell regulates the intestinal microbiota by secreting antimicrobial peptides including α-defensin, human defensin 5 (HD5). Disruption of circadian rhythm mediating sleep-wake cycle induces Paneth cell failure. We aim to clarify effects of short sleep on HD5 secretion and the intestinal microbiota. Fecal samples and self-reported sleep time were obtained from 35 healthy middle-aged Japanese (41 to 60-year-old). Shorter sleep time was associated with lower fecal HD5 concentration (r = 0.354, p = 0.037), lower centered log ratio (CLR)-transformed abundance of short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) producers in the intestinal microbiota such as [Ruminococcus] gnavus group (r = 0.504, p = 0.002) and Butyricicoccus (r = 0.484, p = 0.003), and lower fecal SCFA concentration. Furthermore, fecal HD5 positively correlated with the abundance of these genera and SCFA concentration. These findings suggest that short sleep relates to disturbance of the intestinal microbiota via decreased HD5 secretion.

Objectives Bonding failure is lack of parental emotional relationship between a parent and their infant. This study aims to investigate the association between father's involvements with their partner during pregnancy.Methods A total of 1,957 partners of pregnant women who had visited three maternity hospitals in Sapporo from May 2016 to December 2017 were included in the study. Self-administered questionnaires were distributed to participants at 2,435 weeks gestation and at 6-8 weeks postpartum. The fathers who responded to both the questionnaires were included in the analysis. The participants' relationship with their partners during pregnancy was rated using two questions- whether they help their partner with personal care and household chores, and whether they consult with their partner. Answers for both questions were given on a scale of 0 to 4. A total score of 6-8 points was defined as a high-score group, 3-5 points as a mid-score group, and 0-2 points as a low-score group. Bonding failure was evaluated using the Japanese version of the Mother-Infant Bonding Scale (MIBS-J). The cut-off value was the score that included the top 10% with the highest degree of bonding disorder. A logistic regression was used to analyse the association between involvement with a partner during pregnancy and bonding failure. The confounding variables were father's age, household income, father's average working hours, previous pregnancy, history of abortion/a stillbirth/the death of the child, and partner's prepartum depression during pregnancy.Results 391 fathers responded to the initial questionnaire, and 86.4% of them filled out the second questionnaire up to 2 months postpartum, 10.6% up to 3 months, 2.5% up to 4 months, and 1.0% up to 5 months. Of these, 375 were included, excluding those with missing questionnaire items. 255 fathers were in the high score group of the involvement with partner during pregnancy, 48 had bonding failure, 35 had LA, and 17 had AR. The OR based on the high score group of involvement with partner during pregnancy for bonding failure was 4.81 (1.88-12.33) for mid-score group, and 6.89 (1.40-33.93) for low-score group, and for LA, 2.21 (0.97-5.04) for mid-score group, and 6.40 (1.54-26.68) for low-score group; however, AR showed no respectively significant association (trend P 0.0005, 0.0053, 0.6859).Conclusions The results suggest that a father's unfavorable involvement with his partner affects the bonding with their infant. This suggests that involvement with a partner during pregnancy is an important factor in preventing bonding failure in fathers.

BACKGROUND: Genotoxicity in tissues other than hematopoietic tissues, such as the liver and gastrointestinal (GI) tract, is an important focus in the risk assessment of chemicals in humans. We previously developed a rat micronucleus test for the GI tract, which is the first contact tissue where chemicals are introduced into the body through oral exposure. Target cells were obtained from fresh tissue samples by ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid disodium salt (EDTA) treatment. As an improvement to this method, we have used formalin-fixed tissues instead of fresh tissues; this approach can be used for tissues that are sampled from other toxicological tests and that are archived for several years. This new method can be used for examining micronucleus induction retrospectively when needed. In the present study, we compared the performance of the EDTA method and the new method with formalin-fixed tissues (formalin-fixation method). RESULTS: Histological examination showed that both the EDTA and formalin-fixation methods could be used for collecting cells located in or above the proliferative zone of the GI tract tissues of rats. In addition, the collected cells were similar in shape. We conducted micronucleus tests with rat GI tract tissues by the two methods using model chemicals, which were used as positive control chemicals (a combination of diethylnitrosamine, 1,2-dimethylhydrazine dihydrochloride, and potassium bromate). The two methods showed similar results. We additionally evaluated the aging effect of tissues stored in formalin fixative. The results showed that 1 year of storage did not affect the frequency of micronucleated cells. CONCLUSION: The equivalence of the EDTA and formalin-fixation methods was confirmed, and micronucleus analysis was possible up to at least 1 year after formalin fixation of the GI tract, indicating that the formalin-fixation method is valuable for the rat GI tract micronucleus test.

BACKGROUND: Both decreased insulin sensitivity and impaired insulin secretion are common in Asian populations with diabetes, in contrast to Western populations. There is limited evidence regarding the association between insulin response in diabetes in Asian populations and serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 (25[OH]D3) insufficiency. METHODS: The present cross-sectional study compared the prevalence of diabetes, defined as a fasting plasma glucose level ≥126 mg/dL and/or a HbA1c level ≥6.5%, among 480 participants aged 35-79 years not taking anti-diabetes medications, based on serum 25(OH)D3 levels. A logistic regression model was used to calculate the odds ratios for diabetes in each serum 25(OH)D3 group. Furthermore, this study examined the association between serum 25(OH)D3 levels and the index of homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) using a linear regression model. RESULTS: The prevalence of diabetes was 7.29% in the study population, and was higher in lower serum 25(OH)D3 quartile groups. The odds ratios for diabetes in the first, second, and third serum 25(OH)D3 quartile groups (25[OH]D3: ≤18.10, 18.11-22.90, and 22.91-28.17 ng/mL) were 4.02 (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.25-12.92), 2.50 (95% CI, 0.77-8.10), and 1.91 (95% CI, 0.60-6.09), respectively, with the fourth quartile group (⩾28.18 ng/mL) serving as the reference group, after adjusting for sociodemographic, lifestyle, physical and environmental factors. Serum 25(OH)D3 levels showed an inverse association with log-transformed HOMA-IR after adjusting for similar factors (standardized ß = -0.08; 95% CI, -0.14 to -0.02). CONCLUSION: Serum 25(OH)D3 levels were inversely associated with diabetes prevalence in a general Japanese population, with a slight inverse association between serum 25(OH)D3 levels and HOMA-IR.

Increasing intakes of vegetables are associated with risk reduction in various non-communicable diseases, especially cardiovascular disease. In order to compare the proportion of daily vegetable intake among adults from these 30 Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) countries as well as Japan, we applied data from the OECD website and the 2017 National Health and Nutrition Survey, Japan (NHNS-J). The figures for Australia, Israel, Korea, New Zealand, and the United States exceeded 80%, where survey questions in these countries asked the amount of intake, instead of the frequency of intake. In Japan, results from the one-day dietary record showed that 99.2% of adults consumed vegetables on the survey day; however, this decreased to 66.3% when assessed by a qualitative question. Proportion of daily vegetable intake as well as average intake amount was higher among those aged 60 y or older. Health policies to increase vegetable intake should target younger age groups to promote health in future generations, in Japan.

Unlike in many industrialised countries, the high proportion of young women who are underweight in Japan has been a long-term problem. We evaluated trends in food group intake according to body size among young Japanese women using data from the National Health and Nutrition Survey 2001-2019. Overall, 13,771 Japanese women aged 20-39 years were included. A 1-day household-based dietary record was used to estimate food intake. Foods were classified into 34 groups based on the Standard Tables of Food Composition in Japan. The trend of food group intake was analysed using the Joinpoint Regression Program. The proportion of young women who were underweight was consistently around 20%, while obesity among young women increased between 2001 (10%) and 2019 (13%). A decreased trend in fish and shellfish and seaweed intake and an increased trend in meat and soft drink intake were observed among young women. Decreased trends in the intake of fruit and dairy products were observed in young women who were not obese. An increased trend in the intake of confectionaries was observed in young women who were obese. This study suggests that the types of unhealthy eating habits may differ according to body size among young Japanese women.

This cross-sectional study aimed to investigate the relationship between food sources of free sugars and weight status among children and adolescents aged 2-19 years in Japan (1438 males and 1340 females) from the 2016 National Health and Nutrition Survey, Japan. We estimated the percentage of energy intake (% E) from free sugars from total food sources (FStotal), solid foods (FSsolids), and beverages (FSliquids), using one-day weighed dietary record data. Weight status was determined based on body mass index (BMI) z-scores and the prevalence of overweight and obesity. The mean energy intakes of FStotal, FSsolids, and FSliquids were 5.8%, 4.1%, and 1.8% in males and 6.2%, 4.6%, and 1.6% in females, respectively. After controlling for potential confounding factors, including energy intake, there was no association of free sugars intake from all food sources with BMI z-scores or with the prevalence of overweight and obesity, except for a marginal association between higher FSsolids and lower estimated BMI z-scores in females (p = 0.05). The present findings indicate that among children and adolescents in Japan, who have a relatively low mean intake of free sugars, consuming free sugars from any food source is unlikely to have an adverse effect on weight status.
