RESUMEN

The development of recyclable crosslinked thermosetting fibres is a challenging research topic. In the present work, we have designed and synthesized polyurethane fibres from fructose-derived 5-chloromethylfurfural (CMF) and lignin-derived monomeric phenols. The greenhouse gas emissions associated with the production of CMF showed comparable results to that of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), a high potential sugar-based platform molecule. The wet-spun biobased polyurethane fibres produced could be conveniently crosslinked using Diels-Alder chemistry to effectively enhance the glass transition temperature and mechanical properties. At a mildly elevated temperature (140 °C), the chemically crosslinked fibres could be effectively de-crosslinked, which enabled complete separation from a mixture with poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) and cotton fibres. These results outline a potential strategy to design and fabricate new biobased fibres with reversible crosslinking, which may enable fibre-to-fibre recycling.

RESUMEN

Chyloperitoneum is the presence of chyle in the peritoneal cavity. This study focuses on acute chyloperitoneum, a rare condition with an unclear incidence due to limited number of reported cases in the literature. Here, we present a 24-year-old Saudi female with chyloperitoneum diagnosed intraoperatively during a laparoscopic appendectomy for acute appendicitis that was managed successfully with a low-fat diet and drainage, alongside a literature review to elucidate the condition's pathophysiology and therapeutic strategies. A conservative management approach is recommended for acute chyloperitoneum in the context of appendicitis, this includes intraperitoneal drainage, appendectomy when needed, and careful observation. Our proposed management strategy aligns with findings from the literature review and supports conservative management as a safe and effective treatment modality for this rare condition.

RESUMEN

It has been widely suggested that the transition to battery electric vehicles will require 30% fewer assembly workers than those needed for internal combustion engine vehicles. Here, we use publicly available datasets on vehicle production and employment to show that labor intensity has increased at U.S. vehicle assembly plants that have fully transitioned to assembling battery electric vehicles. During the production ramp-up period, labor intensity increases by more than ten-fold compared to historic combustion vehicle assembly labor intensity. For one assembly site studied, labor intensity and total employment remained three times higher after a decade of electric vehicle production. Our study suggests that it may take longer than 15 years for electric vehicle assembly sites to achieve labor intensity parity with internal combustion vehicle assembly. Thus, rapid widespread loss of employment at vehicle assembly plants is a smaller risk than many fear. Moreover, our study calls for more regionally focused analyses of the transition's effects on labor using data-driven and macro-level surveying approaches.

RESUMEN

A crucial aspect of adding an economical and environmental dimension to the upgrading of bio-oils is to develop catalysts with enhanced and prolonged activity. In the present study, the effect of doping δ-alumina (Al2O3) with oxides of cerium (Ce) and lanthanum (La) before thermal treatment was investigated. The performance of such an Al2O3-supported nickel-molybdenum (Ni-Mo) catalyst was evaluated by studying the selectivity for the direct hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) of vanillin to cresol under continuous-flow conditions. In addition, the effect of adding H2S during catalyst activation and/or performance tests was also evaluated. Overall, enhanced performance of the doped NiMo catalyst in the HDO process has been demonstrated and an increased selectivity for cresol via direct HDO observed. The advantage of adding La and Ce is supported by the characterization results, where less sintering and enhanced pore diameter of the doped Al2O3 were observed after thermally inducing the transformation from the δ to θ phases. The improved characteristics and prolonged activity of the doped Al2O3 were also deduced by the lower acidity of the catalyst, which resulted in reduced coke formation during the HDO process.

RESUMEN

Delayed healing of chronic wounds results in amputation and mortality rates in serious cases. The present study examines the merged wound-restorative efficacy of injectable bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BMMSCs) and topical Callyspongia sp. extract in immunocompromised rats. HR-LC-MS analysis of Callyspongia sp. extract tentatively identified twenty-nine compounds (1-29) and highlighted its richness in fatty acids and terpenoids, known for their wound regenerating efficacies. The wound closure was greatly prominent in the BMMSCs/Callyspongia sp. group in contrast to the control group (p<0.001). The RT-PCR gene expression emphasized these results by attenuating the oxidative, inflammatory, and immunity markers, further confirmed by histopathological findings. Additionally, in silico modeling was particularly targeting matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP9), a key player in wound healing processes. Computational analysis revealed that compounds 18 and 19 potentially modulate MMP9 activity. The combination of BMMSCs and topical Callyspongia sp. extract holds a promise for regenerative therapy constituting a drastic advance in the wound cure of immunocompromised patients, eventually further safety assessments and clinical trials are required.

RESUMEN

Pangenomes are growing in number and size, thanks to the prevalence of high-quality long-read assemblies. However, current methods for studying sequence composition and conservation within pangenomes have limitations. Methods based on graph pangenomes require a computationally expensive multiple-alignment step, which can leave out some variation. Indexes based on k-mers and de Bruijn graphs are limited to answering questions at a specific substring length k. We present Maximal Exact Match Ordered (MEMO), a pangenome indexing method based on maximal exact matches (MEMs) between sequences. A single MEMO index can handle arbitrary-length queries over pangenomic windows. MEMO enables both queries that test k-mer presence/absence (membership queries) and that count the number of genomes containing k-mers in a window (conservation queries). MEMO's index for a pangenome of 89 human autosomal haplotypes fits in 2.04 GB, 8.8× smaller than a comparable KMC3 index and 11.4× smaller than a PanKmer index. MEMO indexes can be made smaller by sacrificing some counting resolution, with our decile-resolution HPRC index reaching 0.67 GB. MEMO can conduct a conservation query for 31-mers over the human leukocyte antigen locus in 13.89 seconds, 2.5x faster than other approaches. MEMO's small index size, lack of k-mer length dependence, and efficient queries make it a flexible tool for studying and visualizing substring conservation in pangenomes.

RESUMEN

SUMMARY: Improvements in nanopore sequencing necessitate efficient classification methods, including pre-filtering and adaptive sampling algorithms that enrich for reads of interest. Signal-based approaches circumvent the computational bottleneck of basecalling. But past methods for signal-based classification do not scale efficiently to large, repetitive references like pangenomes, limiting their utility to partial references or individual genomes. We introduce Sigmoni: a rapid, multiclass classification method based on the r-index that scales to references of hundreds of Gbps. Sigmoni quantizes nanopore signal into a discrete alphabet of picoamp ranges. It performs rapid, approximate matching using matching statistics, classifying reads based on distributions of picoamp matching statistics and co-linearity statistics, all in linear query time without the need for seed-chain-extend. Sigmoni is 10-100× faster than previous methods for adaptive sampling in host depletion experiments with improved accuracy, and can query reads against large microbial or human pangenomes. Sigmoni is the first signal-based tool to scale to a complete human genome and pangenome while remaining fast enough for adaptive sampling applications. AVAILABILITY AND IMPLEMENTATION: Sigmoni is implemented in Python, and is available open-source at https://github.com/vshiv18/sigmoni.

RESUMEN

Bladder cancer, the sixth most common cancer in the United States, is most commonly of the urothelial carcinoma histologic subtype. The clinical spectrum of bladder cancer is divided into 3 categories that differ in prognosis, management, and therapeutic aims: (1) non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC); (2) muscle invasive, nonmetastatic disease; and (3) metastatic bladder cancer. These NCCN Guidelines Insights detail recent updates to the NCCN Guidelines for Bladder Cancer, including changes in the fifth edition of the WHO Classification of Tumours: Urinary and Male Genital Tumours and how the NCCN Guidelines aligned with these updates; new and emerging treatment options for bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG)-unresponsive NMIBC; and updates to systemic therapy recommendations for advanced or metastatic disease.

RESUMEN

Background: Age and HIV are synergistic risk factors for conditions such as HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders (HAND). Yet, it is unclear whether OAWH display different cognitive profiles for HAND. Objective: To describe the cognitive patterns of OAWH treated with combined antiretroviral therapy (cART). Methods: Cross-sectional study that included 330 participants with HIV, aged 50 years or older, cared for at a tertiary care hospital in Mexico City. A short neuropsychological test battery was used to assess a wide spectrum of cognitive functions. The optimal number of cognitive clusters was determined by the silhouette method and a minimization of the Bayesian information criterion. Results: Participants' mean age was 58.8 years (SD = 6.6), and 12.1% were women. A 3-cluster solution yielded stable Jaccard coefficients (p > 0.70). Cluster 1 showed more significant impairment in visual and verbal memory domains, whereas participants in cluster 3 showed significant impairment in language, and abstraction. Cluster 2 showed no predominance of any domain for alterations. Conclusions: There are different cognitive profiles among OAWH with HAND. These differences may be due to individual patterns of HIV-related and non-HIV-related factors.

Importance: No prior trial has compared hypofractionated postprostatectomy radiotherapy (HYPORT) to conventionally fractionated postprostatectomy (COPORT) in patients primarily treated with prostatectomy. Objective: To determine if HYPORT is noninferior to COPORT for patient-reported genitourinary (GU) and gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms at 2 years. Design, Setting, and Participants: In this phase 3 randomized clinical trial, patients with a detectable prostate-specific antigen (PSA; ≥0.1 ng/mL) postprostatectomy with pT2/3pNX/0 disease or an undetectable PSA (<0.1 ng/mL) with either pT3 disease or pT2 disease with a positive surgical margin were recruited from 93 academic, community-based, and tertiary medical sites in the US and Canada. Between June 2017 and July 2018, a total of 296 patients were randomized. Data were analyzed in December 2020, with additional analyses occurring after as needed. Intervention: Patients were randomized to receive 62.5 Gy in 25 fractions (HYPORT) or 66.6 Gy in 37 fractions (COPORT). Main Outcomes and Measures: The coprimary end points were the 2-year change in score from baseline for the bowel and urinary domains of the Expanded Prostate Cancer Composite Index questionnaire. Secondary objectives were to compare between arms freedom from biochemical failure, time to progression, local failure, regional failure, salvage therapy, distant metastasis, prostate cancer-specific survival, overall survival, and adverse events. Results: Of the 296 patients randomized (median [range] age, 65 [44-81] years; 100% male), 144 received HYPORT and 152 received COPORT. At the end of RT, the mean GU change scores among those in the HYPORT and COPORT arms were neither clinically significant nor different in statistical significance and remained so at 6 and 12 months. The mean (SD) GI change scores for HYPORT and COPORT were both clinically significant and different in statistical significance at the end of RT (-15.52 [18.43] and -7.06 [12.78], respectively; P < .001). However, the clinically and statistically significant differences in HYPORT and COPORT mean GI change scores were resolved at 6 and 12 months. The 24-month differences in mean GU and GI change scores for HYPORT were noninferior to COPORT using noninferiority margins of -5 and -6, respectively, rejecting the null hypothesis of inferiority (mean [SD] GU score: HYPORT, -5.01 [15.10] and COPORT, -4.07 [14.67]; P = .005; mean [SD] GI score: HYPORT, -4.17 [10.97] and COPORT, -1.41 [8.32]; P = .02). With a median follow-up for censored patients of 2.1 years, there was no difference between HYPORT vs COPORT for biochemical failure, defined as a PSA of 0.4 ng/mL or higher and rising (2-year rate, 12% vs 8%; P = .28). Conclusions and Relevance: In this randomized clinical trial, HYPORT was associated with greater patient-reported GI toxic effects compared with COPORT at the completion of RT, but both groups recovered to baseline levels within 6 months. At 2 years, HYPORT was noninferior to COPORT in terms of patient-reported GU or GI toxic effects. HYPORT is a new acceptable practice standard for patients receiving postprostatectomy radiotherapy. Trial Registration: ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT03274687.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Treatment of patients with muscle-invasive bladder cancer (MIBC) includes cisplatin-based neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) followed by radical cystectomy (RC). Molecular subtypes have been associated with patient outcomes after NAC and RC, but the reported results have been highly inconsistent. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the association of molecular subtypes from different classifiers with overall survival (OS) among patients with MIBC who underwent RC. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We analyzed gene expression data generated from transurethral resection of MIBC from a previously assembled and published meta-cohort, NACmeta (N = 601, 247 treated with NAC+RC and 354 RC without NAC), where extended follow-up was available. Molecular subtypes were assigned using the Genomic Subtyping Classifier (GSC), the Consensus Classifier, The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) Classifier, and the Lund Classifier. For survival analysis, inverse probability weighting was used to balance the clinical NAC and non-NAC patient groups. RESULTS: A high consistency in gene expression patterns and nomenclature was observed between luminal-like subtypes, defined as GSC-Luminal, Consensus-Luminal Papillary (LumP), TCGA Luminal-Papillary (LumP) and Lund-UroA, but not for basal-like subtypes such GSC-Basal, Consensus Basal/Squamous, TCGA-Basal/Squamous and Lund-Basal/Squamous. Patients with luminal-like subtypes demonstrated no difference in 3-year OS when treated with or without NAC (P = 0.7 for GSC, P = 0.94 for Consensus, P = 0.87 for TCGA and P = 0.66 for Lund-UroA, respectively). CONCLUSION: Luminal-like molecular subtypes identify a subgroup of MIBC patients who do not appear to benefit from current NAC regimens, even for locally advanced disease. In addition, we were able to illustrate differences in subtyping nomenclature that are not reflected in the underlying biological definition of the subtypes. PATIENT SUMMARY: Muscle-invasive bladder cancer exhibits molecular diversity, and various classifications identify different groups who do not benefit from chemotherapy. On the other hand, there is a high inconsistency in the way cancer groupings are named.

RESUMEN

Lignin is an abundant polyaromatic polymer with a wide range of potential future uses. However, the conversion of lignin into valuable products comes at a cost, and medium- to high-value applications are thus appropriate. Two examples of these are polymers (e.g., as fibers, plasticizers, or additives) and flow batteries (e.g., as redox species). Both of these areas would benefit from lignin-derived molecules with potentially low molecular weight and high (electro)chemical functionality. A promising route to obtain these molecules is oxidative lignin depolymerization, as it enables the formation of targeted compounds with multiple functionalities. An application with high potential in the production of plastics is the synthesis of new sustainable polymers. Employing organic molecules, such as quinones and heterocycles, would constitute an important step toward the sustainability of aqueous flow batteries, and lignin and its derivatives are emerging as redox species, mainly due to their low cost and renewability.

RESUMEN

Genome assembly databases are growing rapidly. The redundancy of sequence content between a new assembly and previous ones is neither conceptually nor algorithmically easy to measure. We introduce pertinent methods and DandD, a tool addressing how much new sequence is gained when a sequence collection grows. DandD can describe how much structural variation is discovered in each new human genome assembly and when discoveries will level off in the future. DandD uses a measure called δ ("delta"), developed initially for data compression and chiefly dependent on k-mer counts. DandD rapidly estimates δ using genomic sketches. We propose δ as an alternative to k-mer-specific cardinalities when computing the Jaccard coefficient, thereby avoiding the pitfalls of a poor choice of k. We demonstrate the utility of DandD's functions for estimating δ, characterizing the rate of pangenome growth, and computing all-pairs similarities using k-independent Jaccard.

RESUMEN

Small-cell carcinomas (SCCs) of the genitourinary (GU) tract are rare malignancies with high metastatic potential. The most common primary sites are the bladder and prostate, but case reports of primary SCC of the kidney, ureter, and urethra also exist. The majority of patients present with gross hematuria, irritative or obstructive urinary symptoms, and symptoms of locoregionally advanced or metastatic disease at initial presentation. SCC of the bladder presents with nodal or metastatic involvement in the majority of cases and requires the use of platinum-based chemotherapy in combination with surgery and/or radiation. SCC of the prostate is most commonly seen in the metastatic castrate-resistant setting, and aggressive variant disease presents with a greater propensity for visceral metastases, osteolytic lesions, and relatively low serum prostate-specific antigen for volume of disease burden. Multiple retrospective and prospective randomized studies support the use of a multimodal approach combining platinum-based systemic therapy regimens with radiation and/or surgery for localized disease. This evidence-based strategy is reflected in multiple consensus guidelines. Emerging data suggest that small-cell bladder and prostate cancers transdifferentiate from a common progenitor of conventional urothelial bladder carcinoma and prostatic acinar adenocarcinoma, respectively. Areas of active basic research include efforts to identify the key genetic and epigenetic drivers involved in the emergence of small cell cancers to exploit them for novel therapies. Here, we review these efforts, discuss diagnosis and currently supported management strategies, and summarize ongoing clinical trials evaluating novel therapies to treat this rare, aggressive GU cancer.

RESUMEN

Enhancing drug residence duration within the stomach offers distinct advantages for both localized and systemic effects. Numerous strategies have been proposed to extend drug residence time, with mucoadhesive polymers being a notable avenue. In this context, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose E5 has been employed as both a binding agent for granulating contrast metal powder and a mucoadhesive polymer, spanning various concentrations. The in vitro bioadhesion strength of the formulated tablets was gauged against the stomach lining of rabbits, for the quantification of bioadhesive forces. The temporal aspect of bioadhesion was evaluated through two approaches: one centered on gastric fluid dynamics and another proffered by the researchers, focusing on gastric wall kinetics. The results divulged a decline in bioadhesion force concomitant with high polymer concentrations. Histological examination of stained stomach sections revealed mucosal perturbations within the rabbit stomach. These disruptions exhibited an escalating trend in conjunction with elevated polymer concentrations, culminating in extensive disturbance at a 7.5% polymer concentration. The outcomes unveiled a direct relationship between polymer concentration increments and extended contact time. Subsequent radiological tracking of contrast metal behavior within a mature human stomach indicated a residence time of 6 h due to the entrapment of displaced components at disparate locations.

RESUMEN

Animal experimentation is a critical part of the drug development process and pharmaceutical research. General anesthesia is one of the most common procedures. Careful administration and dosing of anesthetics ensure animal safety and study success. However, repeated injections are needed to maintain anesthesia, leading to adverse effects. Ketamine, a dissociative anesthetic, is commonly used for inducing anesthesia in animals and suffers from a short half-life requiring repeated dosing. Herein, we report a novel system for controlled anesthesia post-intraperitoneal administration. A polymer solution called "premix" was developed using two stimuli-responsive polymers, Pluronic (PF) and Carbopol (CP). As the premix was mixed with ketamine solution and injected, it underwent in situ gelation, hence controlling ketamine release and anesthesia. The PF and CP concentrations were optimized for the gelation temperature and viscosity upon mixing with the ketamine solution. The optimal premix/ketamine formulation (1.5:1) was liquid at room temperature and gel at physiological conditions with favorable mucoadhesion and rheology. Premix retarded the release of ketamine, translating to tunable anesthesia in vivo. Anesthesia duration and recovery were tunable per ketamine dose with minimal side effects. Therefore, we propose the implementation of PF/CP premix as a vehicle for general anesthesia in animals for optimal duration and effect.

RESUMEN

Efficient pangenome indexes are promising tools for many applications, including rapid classification of nanopore sequencing reads. Recently, a compressed-index data structure called the "move structure" was proposed as an alternative to other BWT-based indexes like the FM index and r-index. The move structure uniquely achieves both O(r) space and O(1)-time queries, where r is the number of runs in the pangenome BWT. We implemented Movi, an efficient tool for building and querying move-structure pangenome indexes. While the size of the Movi's index is larger than the r-index, it scales at a smaller rate for pangenome references, as its size is exactly proportional to r, the number of runs in the BWT of the reference. Movi can compute sophisticated matching queries needed for classification - such as pseudo-matching lengths and backward search - at least ten times faster than the fastest available methods, and in some cases more than 30-fold faster. Movi achieves this speed by leveraging the move structure's strong locality of reference, incurring close to the minimum possible number of cache misses for queries against large pangenomes. We achieve still further speed improvements by using memory prefetching to attain a degree of latency hiding that would be difficult with other index structures like the r-index. Movi's fast constant-time query loop makes it well suited to real-time applications like adaptive sampling for nanopore sequencing, where decisions must be made in a small and predictable time interval.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: This study aims to explore the association between the quality of life (QoL) in children with Down syndrome (DS) and its relationship with demographic characteristics of both parents and children. The investigation encompasses five domains: physical and psychological well-being, autonomy and parental relationship, social well-being, and peers, as well as school and the learning environment. METHOD: An online questionnaire, the KIDSCREEN-27, was used to measure the QoL of 112 families with DS in Saudi Arabia, referred to as "Parent-Reported Measures." Descriptive statistics were analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences. RESULTS: The study found that the QoL of children with DS showed high scores in the psychological well-being, autonomy, parental relations, school, and learning environment domains. However, the physical and social well-being and peer domains had lower scores, although still considered "good scores." Family income had a positively significant influence on all QoL domains. Specifically, higher family income was associated with better QoL outcomes, except for social well-being. Parental age was found to influence psychological well-being, while parental education and the relationship between the parent and child influenced social well-being. Lastly, the child's gender was found to have an impact on the school and learning environment domain. CONCLUSION: The study highlights the importance of understanding the impact of the demographic variability of children with DS and their parents on the QoL of their children. It emphasizes the need to address the needs of families with lower incomes and the importance of parental education and relationships with their children in improving social well-being. The findings could aid policymakers and healthcare providers in improving the QoL for families with children who have DS.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Adjuvant administration of hyperthermia (HT) with radiation therapy in the treatment of cancer has been extensively studied in the past five decades. Concurrent use of the two modalities leads to both complementary and synergetic enhancements in tumor management, but presents a practical challenge. Their simultaneous administration using the same implantable thermo-brachytherapy (TB) seed source has been established theoretically through magnetically mediated heat induction with ferromagnetic materials. Careful consideration, however, showed that regular ferromagnetic alloys lack the required conductivity to generate enough power through eddy current to overcome heat dissipation due to blood perfusion at clinically measured rates. PURPOSE: We characterized the TB implant that combines a sealed radioactive source with a ferrimagnetic ceramic (ferrite) core, serving as a self-regulating HT source when placed in an alternating electromagnetic field. To increase the heat production and uniformity of temperature distribution the empty spacers between radioisotope seeds were replaced by hyperthermia-only (HT-only) seeds. METHODS: The heat generation due to eddy currents circulating in the seed's thin metal shell, surrounding the core, depends drastically on the core permeability. We identified a soft ferrite material ( MnZnFe 2 O 4 $\rm MnZnFe_2O_4$ ) as the best candidate for the core, owing to its high permeability, the HT-range Curie temperature, adjustable through material composition, and a sharp Curie transition, leading to heat self-regulation, with no invasive thermometry required. The core permeability as a function of temperature was calculated based on measured resistor-inductor (RL) circuit parameters and material B-H curves. The thickness of the shell was optimized separately for TB and HT-only seeds, having slightly different dimensions. Heat generation was calculated using the power versus temperature approximation. Finally, the temperature distribution for a realistic prostate LDR brachytherapy plan was modeled with COMSOL Multiphysics for a set of blood perfusion rates found in the literature. RESULTS: The small size of the investigated ferrite core samples resulted in demagnetization significantly decreasing the relative permeability from its intrinsic value of ∼5000 to about 11 in the range of magnetic field amplitude and frequency values relevant to HT. The power generated by the seed dropped sharply as the shell thickness deviated from the optimal value. The optimized TB and HT-only seeds generated 45 and 267 mW power, respectively, providing a HT source sufficient for >90% volume coverage even for the highest blood perfusion rates. The toxicity of the surrounding normal tissues was minimal due to the rapid temperature fall off within a few millimeters distance from a seed. CONCLUSIONS: The investigated TB and HT-only seed prototypes were shown to provide sufficient power for the concurrent administration of radiation and HT. In addition to being used as a source for both radiation and heat at the onset of cancer therapy, these implanted seeds would be available for treatment intensification in the setting of salvage brachytherapy for locally radiorecurrent disease, possibly as a sensitizer to systemic therapies or as a modulator of the immune response, without another invasive procedure. Experimentally determined parameters of the ferrite material cores provided in this study establish a mechanistic foundation for future pre-clinical and clinical validation studies.

RESUMEN

Brenner tumors are relatively uncommon surface epithelial tumors of the ovary, accounting for less than 2% of all ovarian tumors. They may be of benign, borderline, or malignant nature as classified by the World Health Organization. Definitive diagnosis is made by histopathological examination after surgical excision, as it does not have pathognomonic imaging features. Due to the rarity of these tumors, reporting these cases may be beneficial to develop diagnostic and treatment criteria. We herein report two cases of Brenner tumor and discuss the available literature. Two cases of Brenner tumor were reported in addition to the literature review. Electronic search in different databases was used, accessing published full free-text articles in the English language, between January 2010 and December 2017, with the following MeSH terms: ovarian Brenner, Brenner, and ovary Brenner. Nineteen articles were located, of which seven articles were selected because they were consistent with the aims of the review. Twelve articles were excluded as they did not meet the aim of the review. Data from the reviewed articles were used to finalize the conclusive recommendations. Brenner tumors are rare ovarian tumors that are diagnosed by histopathological examination. Radiological investigation has a negligible role in the diagnosis, as Brenner tumors exhibit nonspecific features in imaging studies. To date, surgical excision remains the primary modality in diagnosing and treating Brenner tumors. The clinical characteristics of Brenner tumors require more research to be fully understood.
