BACKGROUND: Skin glow is a subcomponent of skin quality. It has become entrenched in the cosmeceuticals and aesthetics lexicons as a synonym for health and youth, but is not well-defined as a scientific metric. AIMS: To examine the concept of skin glow and determine if it is an objective concept that can be defined and quantified. METHODS: Literature review was used to develop a survey on current concepts relating to skin quality. The survey results were analyzed descriptively and presented to a focus group comprising five dermatologists and four aesthetic physicians. This group then discussed the concept of skin glow, how to define it and what metrics could be used to assess it. RESULTS: Surveyed practitioners (n = 38) ranked skin quality as the fourth most important factor related to a person's overall aesthetic first impression. Almost all (95%) respondents reported routinely assessing skin quality, citing serial photography (83%), and visual inspection (67%) as the main means of achieving this. The focus group defined skin glow as even reflectance from an unaffected papillary and reticular dermal collagen layer, which is created only when skin does not exhibit any characteristics that detract from this even reflectance. Due to its complexity, the focus group proposed a hierarchal framework for assessment, encompassing patient self-rating, practitioner severity rating, and supplemental use of validated measurement devices. CONCLUSIONS: Skin glow can be defined and quantified. More work is warranted to develop a practical skin glow assessment tool suitable for use in the clinic setting.

BACKGROUND: Injectable poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA) has been proven safe and effective with numerous medical applications for more than 25 years. The product has been approved in over 40 countries and is being used for soft tissue augmentation in the face and certain body parts. With the increased demand for subtle and natural-looking aesthetic treatments in the Asia-Pacific region, there is also a heightened need for consistent preparation and effective treatment methodologies to optimize outcomes for Asian patients. METHODS: The body of evidence in medical literature, clinical data of presented case reports, and the collective experience of the authors are reflected in these consensus recommendations, which also take under consideration the availability of biostimulators in the Asia-Pacific region. RESULTS: The resulting consensus recommendations include patient selection and assessment, management of treatment expectations, appropriate preparation and storage, proper injection techniques and treatment plans, management of adverse effects, PLLA combination with other facial rejuvenation procedures, and other constructive considerations. CONCLUSIONS: In the above consensus recommendations, the authors shared their best practices in accordance with the updated preparation and treatment protocols of PLLA. These recommendations represent the clinical and real-world techniques utilized by authors in providing PLLA treatments for Asian patients.

BACKGROUND: Early detection of breast cancer (BC) through mammography screening (MAM) is known to reduce mortality. We examined the differential effect that mammography has on BC characteristics and overall survival and the sociodemographic determinants of MAM utilization in a multi-ethnic Asian population. METHODS: This study included 3739 BC patients from the Singapore Breast Cancer Cohort (2010-2018). Self-reported sociodemographic characteristics were collected using a structured questionnaire. Clinical data were obtained through medical records. Patients were classified as screeners (last screening mammogram ≤ 2 years before diagnosis), non-screeners (aware but did not attend or last screen > 2years), and those unaware of MAM. Associations between MAM behaviour (MB) and sociodemographic factors and MB and tumour characteristics were examined using multinomial regression. Ten-year overall survival was modelled using Cox regression. RESULTS: Patients unaware of screening were more likely diagnosed with late stage (ORstage III vs stage I (Ref) [95% CI]: 4.94 [3.45-7.07], p < 0.001), high grade (ORpoorly vs well-differentiated (reference): 1.53 [1.06-2.20], p = 0.022), nodal-positive, large size (OR>5cm vs ≤2cm (reference): 5.06 [3.10-8.25], p < 0.001), and HER2-positive tumours (ORHER2-negative vs HER2-positive (reference): 0.72 [0.53-0.97], p = 0.028). Similar trends were observed between screeners and non-screeners with smaller effect sizes. Overall survival was significantly shorter than screeners in the both groups (HRnon-screeners: 1.89 [1.22-2.94], p = 0.005; HRunaware: 2.90 [1.69-4.98], p < 0.001). Non-screeners and those unaware were less health conscious, older, of Malay ethnicity, less highly educated, of lower socioeconomic status, more frequently ever smokers, and less physically active. Among screeners, there were more reported personal histories of benign breast surgeries or gynaecological conditions and positive family history of breast cancer. CONCLUSIONS: Mammography attendance is associated with more favourable BC characteristics and overall survival. Disparities in the utility of MAM services suggest that different strategies may be needed to improve MAM uptake.

Physical activity (PA) is known to reduce breast cancer (BC) risk and improve patient prognosis. However, the association between pre-diagnostic PA and the aggressiveness of BC is unclear. We investigated the associations between PA, BC tumour characteristics, and survival. This retrospective observational study included 7688 BC patients from the Singapore Breast Cancer Cohort (2010−2016). PA information from the questionnaire included intensity (light/moderate/vigorous) and duration (<1 h/1−2 h/>2 h per week). A PA score (1−5) incorporating intensity and duration was calculated. Associations between PA score and tumour characteristics such as stage, histological grade, nodal and hormone receptor status were examined using multinomial regression. Moreover, 10-year overall survival was estimated using Cox regression analysis in 6572 patients after excluding patients with invalid survival data and stage IV disease. Breast tumours associated with higher PA score were more likely to be non-invasive (ORinvasive vs. non-invasive(reference) [95% CI]: 0.71 [0.58−0.87], p-trend = 0.001), of lower grade (ORpoorly vs. well differentiated(reference): 0.69 [0.52−0.93], p = 0.014), ER-positive (ORER-negative vs. ER-positive(reference): 0.94 [0.89−1.00], p-trend = 0.049), PR-positive (ORPR-negative vs. PR-positive(reference): 0.82 [0.67−0.99], p = 0.041), HER2-negative (ORHER2-negative vs. HER2-positive(reference): 1.29 [1.02−1.62], p-trend = 0.002), and less likely to be of HER2-overexpressed subtype (ORHER2-overexpressed vs. Luminal A(reference): 0.89 [0.81−0.98], p-trend = 0.018). These associations (odds ratios) were more pronounced among post-menopausal patients. A higher PA score did not improve survival. Higher levels of pre-diagnostic PA were associated with less aggressive tumours in BC patients. This illustrated another benefit of PA in addition to its known role in BC risk reduction.

The fabrication of Nd-Nb co-doped SnO2/α-WO3 electrochromic (EC) materials for smart window applications is presented in the present paper. Nb is a good dopant candidate for ECs owing to its ability to introduce active sites on the surface of α-WO3 without causing much lattice strain due to the similar ionic radius of Nb5+ and W6+. These active sites introduce more channels for charge insertion or removal during redox reactions, improving the overall EC performance. However, Nb suffers from prolonged utilization due to the Li+ ions trapped within the ECs. By coupling Nd with Nb, the co-dopants would transfer their excess electrons to SnO2, improving the electronic conductivity and easing the insertion and extraction of Li+ cations from the ECs. The enhanced Nd-Nb co-doped SnO2/α-WO3 exhibited excellent visible light transmission (90% transmittance), high near-infrared (NIR) contrast (60% NIR modulation), rapid switching time (∼1 s), and excellent stability (>65% of NIR modulation was retained after repeated electrochemical cycles). The mechanism of enhanced EC performance was also investigated. The novel combination of Nd-Nb co-doped SnO2/α-WO3 presented in this work demonstrates an excellent candidate material for smart window applications to be used in green buildings.

Rhodium (Rh) and palladium (Pd) thin films have been fabricated using an atomic layer deposition (ALD) process using Rh(acac)3 and Pd(hfac)2 as the respective precursors and using short-pulse low-concentration ozone as the co-reactant. This method of fabrication does away with the need for combustible reactants such as hydrogen or oxygen, either as a precursor or as an annealing agent. All previous studies using only ozone could not yield metallic films, and required post treatment using hydrogen or oxygen. In this work, it was discovered that the concentration level of ozone used in the ALD process was critical in determining whether the pure metal film was formed, and whether the metal film was oxidized. By controlling the ozone concentration under a critical limit, the fabrication of these noble metal films was successful. Rhodium thin films were deposited between 200 and 220 °C, whereas palladium thin films were deposited between 180 and 220 °C. A precisely controlled low ozone concentration of 1.22 g m-3 was applied to prevent the oxidation of the noble metallic film, and to ensure fast growth rates of 0.42 Å per cycle for Rh, and 0.22 Å per cycle for Pd. When low-concentration ozone was applied to react with ligand, no excess ozone was available to oxidize the metal products. The surfaces of deposited films obtained the RMS roughness values of 0.30 nm for Rh and 0.13 nm for Pd films. The resistivities of 18 nm Rh and 22 nm Pd thin films were 17 µΩ cm and 63 µΩ cm.
