RESUMEN

Scientists in many fields have studied olfaction in dogs, but no simple method exists to study this function. The olfactory ability of dogs is used in many fields. However, the owners of the dogs have a frustrating experience because there is not an easy method to measure olfactory function. The purpose of this study was to examine the characteristics of olfactory function of the dog with electroencephalographic olfactometry (EEGO) recording. It was found that slow waves decreased and rapid waves increased in response to odours. From these results, it is suggested that the rapid waves of EEGO activity are important in determining a dog's olfactory ability. The EEGO recording is effective in diagnosing anosmia in the dog and is easier than a behavioural experiment. Additionally, this method may not cause distress to an animal.

RESUMEN

We evaluated the adverse effects, response rates, and changes in CEA-doubling time before and during DSM.ADM.MMC therapy (DSM therapy) in 8 patients with liver metastases of colorectal cancer. In principle, 600 mg/body DSM, 30 mg/body ADM, and 10 mg/body MMC were injected into the hepatic artery, and this treatment was repeated as often as possible. A total of 26 injections revealed no severe adverse effects. In 5 patients who received 3 or more injections of DSM, the response rate was 20% (partial response, one) and an improvement of CEA-doubling time was confirmed in 3 patients (60%). Two patients who demonstrated the shortening of CEA-doubling time after this therapy had shorter survival. It is suggested that to compare CEA-doubling times before and during DSM therapy is useful for selecting candidates for this treatment.

RESUMEN

Although avian olfaction has been studied behaviorally and anatomically, few electrophysiological (EEG) studies exist. The purpose of this study is to examine the characteristics of the olfactory function of the fowl with EEG recording. We found that slow waves decreased and the rapid waves increased in response to a variety of odors.

RESUMEN

Past atmospheric nuclear testing which have been conducted frequently, have caused environmental pollution due to the diffusion of radioactive substances into the atmosphere and from the radioactive fallout. The environmental pollution from nuclear testing into the atmosphere has resulted in the radioactive contamination in agricultural products and has continued for a long time. The radioactive contamination of agricultural products occurs through air, water and soil which were contaminated by radioactive fallout. In this paper, for the purpose of analyzing the extent of the radioactive contamination levels in the agricultural products of Saitama Prefecture, spinach, green soybeans, dried shiitake and welsh onion, were selected among products, as the amount of the harvest is abundant in all of Japan. Radioactivity concentration was investigated by gamma ray spectrometry and radiochemical analysis. The radioactivity concentrations of artificial radioactive nuclides, cesium-137 (137Cs) and strontium-90 (90Sr), were detected in the range which is considered to be the result of radioactive fallout. Moreover, in order to examine the effect on radioactivity concentrations in agricultural products by culinary processing, the raw agricultural products were boiled, and their radioactivity concentrations were compared with the raw produce. The radioactivity concentrations in the boiled were lower than those in the raw produce.

RESUMEN

A 71-year-old male with recurrent colon cancer was admitted to our hospital with obstructive jaundice. Virchow's node metastasis was palpable in his neck. The enlarged intraabdominal lymphnodes due to recurrence and liver metastasis were demonstrated on computed tomography. Bile duct obstruction was treated by expandable metallic biliary endoprosthesis. 5'-DFUR (5'-deoxy-5-fluorouridine) was administered orally at 600 mg daily. Virchow's node metastasis completely disappeared by 46 days after administration of 5'-DFUR. The enlarged intraabdominal lymphnodes and liver metastasis disappeared on computed tomography. No significant side effects from 5'-DFUR were encountered for 18 months. 5'-DFUR appears to be a useful and safe treatment for recurrent colon cancer.

RESUMEN

Polyclonal antibodies against a 44-KD phosphoprotein (44K BPP) from rat bone were raised in rabbits, affinity-purified, and used as probes to study the protein's distribution in various types of developing bones from newborn rats. Three immunostaining procedures were applied utilizing indirect immunofluorescence, avidin-biotin-peroxidase complex, and avidin-gold complex with silver enhancement. All methods gave essentially identical and/or complementary results. Antigenicity for anti-44K BPP was detected in endochondral and membranous bone. In the latter, it was also demonstrated in the osteoid. In the woven bone of lower jaw, immunoreactivity for anti-44K BPP antibodies was found in fibroblast-shaped cells (pre-osteoblasts) that were between the bone trabeculae but not in direct contact with bony extracellular material. In addition to these presumed osteoprogenitor cells, osteoblasts as well as osteocytes were strongly stained; the cytoplasmic staining was associated with the Golgi apparatus. Occasionally immunoreactivity was detected in osteoclasts, but in these cells immunostaining was either diffusely spread in the cytoplasm or present only at sites of bone erosion. These findings support the hypothesis that the 44K BPP is a protein made by osteoblasts and is localized predominantly in bone. Furthermore, the protein appears to be expressed early in histogenesis of the bone-forming cells.

RESUMEN

A phosphorylated glycoprotein was purified from the mixture of proteins extracted by demineralization of rat bone with 0.5 M EDTA in 4 M guanidinium chloride. A high level of purity for the preparation was indicated by a single band on sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS)-gradient gel electrophoresis, sedimentation equilibrium ultracentrifugal data, and by automated Edman degradation results. The molecular weight of the phosphoprotein was shown to be about 44,000 by sedimentation equilibrium analyses in 4 M guanidinium chloride, even though an Mr of 75,000 was obtained by 5-15% SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Subsequent analysis by 15% SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis gave an Mr of 45,000. Analytical data showed that the protein contained 16.6% carbohydrate, possibly including 1 N-linked oligosaccharide and 5-6 O-linked oligosaccharides. The aspartic acid- and glutamic acid-rich protein contained about 300 amino acid residues including 1 phosphothreonine and 12 phosphoserine residues. Alkaline beta-elimination/NaBH4 reduction data showed that the phosphate obtained by complete acid hydrolysis prior to amino acid analysis was equivalent to the phosphate subject to alkaline beta-elimination. In this experiment, the losses of serine plus threonine exceeded the amount of phosphate liberated by 5-6 residues/protein. These serine and threonine residues probably represent O-linked oligosaccharides, since the protein contained about this number of N-acetyl-galactosamine residues. That the phosphoprotein is synthesized and secreted by osteoblast-like cells was shown with cultures of clonal rat osteosarcoma cells. After pulsing with 32PO4 the proteins secreted into the medium were precipitated with trichloroacetic acid and the radiolabeled proteins were immunoadsorbed. A protein migrating in the same position, on 5-15% SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (i.e. with an Mr = 75,000) and on 15% gels (Mr = 45,000), as the phosphoprotein obtained from bone could be specifically immunoprecipitated.
