Many studies have confirmed the memory enhancement effect of production, generation and elaboration which can be effective after only one encoding. It is also known that greater memory enhancement effects can be obtained by combining multiple memory strategies during encoding. This study aimed to investigate whether the combination of production and self-generated elaboration enhances memory performance compared with production or generation alone. A total of 23 undergraduate and graduate students participated in this study. In the functional magnetic resonance imaging analysis, we explored the neural representation of remembering information after production and self-generated elaboration strategy. We set four encoding strategy conditions: (1) Read Silent (read without production), (2) Read Aloud (only production), (3) Add Silent (self-generated elaboration without production), (4) Add Aloud (production and self-generated elaboration). The retrieval performance and brain activity while retrieving the learned sentences after a one-week delay were examined. The behavioral results showed that the highest memory performance was for sentences encoded in Add Aloud. The interaction between production and self-generated elaboration was statistically significant. These results suggest that the memory enhancement effect of combining production and self-generated elaboration is not a simple addition nor synergistic facilitation effect. The imaging results showed that the following areas were related to the retrieval of the target encoded in the add aloud condition: the area related to integration of internal and external information (precuneus), area related to information rich stimuli (lateral occipital lobe), area related to self-involvement and inference of others' feelings (MPFC), area related to seen imagery (retrosplenial region) and area related to adjustment of movement (cerebellum). These results suggest that with an encoding strategy that combines production and self-generated elaboration, integrated auditory input of vocalizations and generated images, visual images of the scene, self-relevance, inference of other's feeling, movement by moving mouth are stored with the target and enhanced memory performance of AA.

Oxidative stress increases the production of the predominant mucin MUC5AC in airway epithelial cells and is implicated in the pathogenesis of bronchial asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Oxidative stress impairs mitochondria, releasing mitochondrial DNA into the cytoplasm and inducing inflammation through the intracytoplasmic DNA sensor STING (stimulator of interferon genes). However, the role of innate immunity in mucin production remains unknown. We aimed to elucidate the role of innate immunity in mucin production in airway epithelial cells under oxidative stress. Human airway epithelial cell line (NCI-H292) and normal human bronchial epithelial cells were used to confirm MUC5AC expression levels by real-time PCR when stimulated with hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). MUC5AC transcriptional activity was increased and mitochondrial DNA was released into the cytosol by H2O2. Mitochondrial antioxidants were used to confirm the effects of mitochondrial oxidative stress where antioxidants inhibited the increase in MUC5AC transcriptional activity. Cyclic GMP-AMP synthase (cGAS) or STING knockout (KO) cells were generated to investigate their involvement. H2O2-induced MUC5AC expression was suppressed in STING KO cells, but not in cGAS KO cells. The epidermal growth factor receptor was comparably expressed in STING KO and wild-type cells. Thus, mitochondria and STING play important roles in mucin production in response to oxidative stress in airway epithelial cells.

BACKGROUND: Oral allergy syndrome (OAS) is characterized by an immediate allergic reaction that mainly or partially affects the oral mucosa, pharynx, or lips, and it is usually caused by ingesting fresh fruits or vegetables. Most patients with OAS also have allergic rhinitis due to pollen. As allergic rhinitis is increasingly prevalent in the Japanese population and the age at disease development is decreasing, morbidity associated with OAS among the younger population is likely to increase. However, there is little information about the prevalence of this disease among Japanese children, specifically the influences of residency in regions with different environments. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the prevalence of OAS and seasonal allergic rhinitis (SAR) among Japanese children and evaluate the relationship between OAS and SAR. METHODS: We administered a questionnaire-based survey among children aged 7-15 years, living in 4 cities in central Japan. RESULTS: The questionnaires were administered to 4103 children and completed by 3365 (82.0%). Overall, 524 children (15.6%) reported OAS-like symptoms after ingesting fruits or vegetables. The prevalence of seasonal SAR and oral symptoms significantly differed among the 4 cities. The total prevalence of oral symptoms co-occurring with SAR was 24.4%, which was significantly higher than the prevalence of symptoms occurring without SAR (10.2%, p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Herein, oral symptoms were more likely to occur in patients with SAR than in those without SAR. The prevalence of SAR and food-induced oral symptoms significantly differed among the regions, suggesting they might be affected by regional differences in lifestyles and flora.

BACKGROUND: A substantial number of patients with shock devices (implantable cardioverter defibrillators [ICDs] or ICDs with resynchronization [CRTDs]) experience psychological distress. OBJECTIVE: We investigated the device nurse telephone intervention's effect on improving the patient's adaptation to shock devices, quality of life (QOL), and anxiety in the remote monitoring era. METHODS: The patient's adaptation to the device, health-related QOL, and anxiety were investigated by the modified Implanted Devices Adjustment-Japan score (IDAS), Short Form-36, and State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) before and 1-year after the device nurse telephone intervention, performed every 3 months. A total of 95 patients (median age 69 years and 25 females) participated. Sixty patients had ICDs and 35 CRTDs. Structural heart disease was observed in 72 patients, and idiopathic ventricular arrhythmias in the others. The mean left ventricular ejection fraction was 46% ± 15%. The median duration since the device implantation was 5.2 years. RESULTS: The total IDAS score significantly improved from 28.42 ± 7.11 at baseline to 26.77 ± 7.68 (p = 0.0076) at 1 year. Both the state and trait anxiety significantly improved (from 38.9 ± 9.6 to 35.3 ± 9.0 [<0.0001] and 38.8 ± 10.3 to 36.2±9.8 [p = 0.0044], respectively). The prevalence of patients with a state and trait anxiety of more than 40 decreased from 44 (46%) and 38 (40%) patients before the study to 27 (28 %) and 32 (34 %) at 1 year. The SF-36 mental component summary score significantly increased (50.8 ± 8.3 at baseline to 53.1 ± 7.7 at 1 year, p = 0.0031). CONCLUSIONS: The device nurse intervention facilitated the patient's adaptation to the shock device, increased the health-related QOL, and reduced the patient's anxiety.

OBJECTIVES: Stent fracture (SF) of sirolimus-eluting stents (SES) has emerged recently in the literature and shown to be associated with an increased risk of restenosis; however, little is known regarding SF after bare-metal stent implantation. We sought to assess whether the use of SES was associated with an increased risk of SF compared with its bare-metal platform, the Bx-velocity stent (BX-BMS). METHODS: A total of 478 lesions in 416 patients undergoing SES implantation and subsequent angiography 6-9 months after the index procedure were compared with 152 lesions in 142 consecutive patients treated with BX-BMS. Stented lesions with total stent-length greater than 40 mm were excluded. RESULTS: There were no significant differences in overall baseline clinical and anatomic features between the SES and BX-BMS groups, or in SF frequencies at 6-9 month follow-up (4.4% for SES and 1.3% for BX-BMS, P= 0.078). In-stent restenosis was observed more often in SF lesions versus non-SF lesions (34.8 vs. 7.7%, P< 0.001) in association with a higher 3-year adverse events rate (27.3 vs. 13.6%, P = 0.076). The risk of SF at 6-9 months was independently associated with total stent length [odds ratio (OR), 2.13; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.18-3.83; P = 0.012], angulated lesions (OR, 4.25; 95% CI, 1.80-10.00; P = 0.001), and right coronary artery lesions (OR, 3.55; 95% CI, 1.46-8.62; P = 0.005) but not with SES use. CONCLUSION: Stent implantation in right coronary artery lesions, tortuous lesions, and/or longer lesions covered with longer stents, and not SES versus BX-BMS use, may be associated with increased likelihood of SF.
