RESUMEN

A few seconds flash photopyrolysis is used as efficient screening tool for the investigation of selected biomass in producing syngas, hydrogen and biochar. This innovative approach allowed rapid pyrolysis of the biomass, which was followed by a precise gas analysis and quantification, using Mass Spectrometry (MS). The analysis of the gas composition from three distinct biomass wastes in this study provides new insights into their thermochemical characteristics, expanding thus our knowledge of the potential of the selected biomass resources for the production of carbon, syngas, and/or hydrogen-rich gas production. This enhanced characterization revealed the potential of biomass transformation in contributing to innovative green energy sustainable solutions.

Utilizing water resources rationally has become critical due to the expected increase in water scarcity. Cacti are capable of surviving with minimal water requirements and in poor soils. Despite being highly drought-resistant, cacti still faces limitations in realizing its full potential under drought-stress conditions. To this end, we investigated the interactive effect of humic substances (Hs) and arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) on cactus plants under drought stress. In the study, a cactus pot experiment had three irrigation levels (W1: no irrigation, W2: 15% of field capacity, and W3: 30% of field capacity) and two biostimulants (Hs soil amendment and AMF inoculation), applied alone or combined. The findings show that the W1 and W2 regimes affected cactus performance. However, Hs and/or AMF significantly improved growth. Our results revealed that drought increased the generation of reactive oxygen species. However, Hs and/or AMF application improved nutrient uptake and increased anthocyanin content and free amino acids. Furthermore, the soil's organic matter, phosphorus, nitrogen, and potassium contents were improved by the application of these biostimulants. Altogether, using Hs alone or in combination with AMF can be an effective and sustainable approach to enhance the tolerance of cactus plants to drought conditions, while also improving the soil quality.

Opuntia spp. are crops well adapted to adverse environments and have great economic potential. Their constituents, including fruits, cladodes, and flowers, have a high nutritional value and are rich in value-added compounds. Cladodes have an appreciable content in dietary fiber, as well as bioactive compounds such as kaempferol, quercetin, and isorhamnetin. Fruits are a major source of bioactive compounds such as phenolic acids and vitamin C. The seeds are mainly composed of unsaturated fatty acids and vitamin E. The flowers are also rich in phenolic compounds. Therefore, in addition to their traditional uses, the different plant fractions can be processed to meet multiple applications in the food industry. Several bakery products have been developed with the incorporation of cladode flour. Pectin and mucilage obtained from cladodes can act as edible films and coatings. Fruits, fruit extracts, and fruit by-products have been mixed into food products, increasing their antioxidant capacity and extending their shelf life. Betalains, obtained from fruits, can be used as food colorants and demonstrate promising applications as a sensor in food packaging. This work reviews the most valuable components of the different fractions of this plant and emphasizes its most recent food applications, demonstrating its outstanding value.

Coal samples of different ranks were investigated through various compositional, morphological/structural, and textural experiments prior to their electrochemical implementation in Na-ion half-cells. The purity of coals proved insignificant while distinctions in the flake size, pore width, pore distribution, ID/IG ratio, crystallite parameters (La and Lc) along with adjacent parameters, such as the R-empirical parameter, i.e., limited parallel graphene stacking proved more relevant for Na+ storage into the negative host electrodes. Coal powders were identified via a two-step TGA analysis technique displaying the overall carbon content of the coals and the impurities. Coal-based anode materials were prepared from raw and pyrolyzed coals (at 800 °C under argon gas-flow) and cycled in Na-ion half-cells to further investigate the impact of the coal rank on the energetic properties. High volatile bituminous coal with lower graphene stacking and augmented nanoscopic pores delivered higher reversible capacity in comparison with semi-anthracite coal, whether in their raw (67 vs. 54 mAh/g) or pyrolyzed (214 vs. 64 mAh/g) states, respectively vs. Na/Na+. The dominance of HVBC over SAC due to enhanced properties as R-empirical parameter, ID/IG ratio, and internal porosity. This study provides an exhaustive methodology to assess other carbonaceous anode materials further to evaluate their energy storage capabilities.

We have developed hot-wire anemometry applying the 3omega method. The approach is based on the same heat transfer process as traditional anemometry, but substituting the constant current by a sinusoidal current and using synchronous detection to measure the conductive-convective exchange coefficient and the gas flow rate. Our theoretical model is tested with air flow at 300 K under atmospheric pressure: The experimental results are in agreement with the numerical simulation, justifying the technical choices in the 3omega method and the approximations made. The effectiveness of the 3omega method for measuring the flow rate and the conductive-convective exchange coefficient between the hot wire and flowing gas is discussed.

Valve activity was measured in the Mediterranean mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis in response to sublethal concentrations of four metals (Hg, Cu, Zn and Cd) and two phosphate industry effluents from the Atlantic coast of Morocco. Valve movements were monitored using a proximity inductive sensor which could display all activity figures from full closure to wide opening of the shell valves. In a 1 h exposure experiments, all metals induced a decrease in the time of normal opening and the appearance of sequences of stress behaviour, including enhanced valve adductions and complete closure at high concentrations. Mercury (tested from 5 to 75 microg Hg l(-1)) was the most toxic to the valve activity, with a threshold effective concentration at 10 microg Hg l(-1) and full valve closure occurring at 50 microg Hg l(-1). Copper (15-150 microg Cu l(-1)) showed a toxic effect starting at threshold concentration of 20 microg Cu l(-1) and induced full valve closure at 150 microg Cu l(-1). Zinc (100-500 microg Zn l(-1)) was effective in reducing the time of normal opening (threshold concentration at 100 microg Zn I(-1)) but no complete closure was recorded in any of the tested concentrations. For cadmium (1000-5000 microg Cd l(-1)), the valve activity was insensitive for exposures under 2000 microg Cd l(-1). Results for the testing of several samplings of the phosphate industry effluents (Safi and Jorf Lasfar) showed that their toxicity varied over the time. The effluent of the Jorf Lasfar plant (2-9.4%) was, however, more toxic than that of Safi (1-25%). In the light of these results, the sensitivity of the valve activity of Mytilus galloprovincialis to pollutants and its usefulness for in situ monitoring of coastal pollution in Morocco are discussed.
