RESUMEN

Hymenaea martiana is a species popularly known in Northeastern Brazil as "jatobá" and used in folk medicine to treat pain and inflammation. The aim of this work was to evaluate the antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory activity of H. martiana. In the present study, we carried out an investigation about the effects of the crude ethanolic extract (Hm-EtOH) and the ethyl acetate fraction (Hm-AcOEt) in models of nociception and inflammation in mice. Chemical (acetic acid-induced writhing and formalin) and thermal stimuli (hot plate) were used for the evaluation of antinociceptive activity, while for the anti-inflammatory profile paw edema induced by carrageenan was used, along with leukocyte migration to the peritoneal cavity. The presence of the flavonoid astilbin in the samples was characterized through HPLC-DAD-MS analysis. Hm-EtOH and Hm-AcOEt (100, 200 and 400 mg.kg-¹, i.p.) significantly reduced the number of abdominal contortions and decreased the paw licking time in the formalin test. In the hot plate, the extract increased the latency time of animals. Hm-EtOH and Hm-AcOEt inhibited significantly the increase in the edema after the administration of carrageenan. Hm-EtOH and Hm-AcOEt inhibited leukocyte migration in the peritonitis test. HPLC-DAD-MS analysis of Hm-EtOH and Hm-AcOEt revealed the presence of the flavonoid astilbin in the samples. According to the results of this study, both Hm-EtOH and Hm-AcOEt have antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory activities, which could be related with the presence of flavonoid in the extracts. The results reinforce the popular use of this plant.

OBJECTIVES: The increasing amount of electronically available documents in bibliographic databases and the clinical documentation requires user-friendly techniques for content retrieval. METHODS: A domain-specific approach on semantic text indexing for document retrieval is presented. It is based on a subword thesaurus and maps the content of texts in different European languages to a common interlingual representation, which supports the search across multilingual document collections. RESULTS: Three use cases are presented where the semantic retrieval method has been implemented: a bibliographic database, a department EHR system, and a consumer-oriented Web portal. CONCLUSIONS: It could be shown that a semantic indexing and retrieval approach, the performance of which had already been empirically assessed in prior studies, proved useful in different prototypical and routine scenarios and was well accepted by several user groups.

RESUMEN

A 38-year-old male soldier presented to an acute care clinic complaining of 24 hours of persistent, bilateral shoulder and neck pain after a 12-mile road march. He denied any history of prior trauma to either area. On physical examination, there was diffuse tenderness in both supraclavicular areas as well as over the posterior neck.

RESUMEN

The importance of evaluating nonfunctional adrenal masses in the right clinical setting is discussed. A 60-year-old man was initially diagnosed of having a localized lung carcinoma. Metastatic work-up showed an adrenal mass that was not deemed to be related to the lung primary. Although biochemical testing revealed that the adrenal mass was nonfunctional, adrenal scintigraphy was not performed. On resection, the lung neoplasm was shown to be a poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma. Radiologic follow-up of the adrenal finding was recommended. A year later, the patient presented with an abdominal mass that was visualized by bone scintigraphy and, on resection, proved to be adrenocortical carcinoma. In retrospect, the lung mass was a metastasis of an adrenocortical carcinoma.

RESUMEN

A 42-year-old woman presented with intermittent low back and left lower extremity pain. The blood flow and blood pool images of bone scintigraphy showed a large focus of increased activity in the right lower abdomen. Computed tomography showed an enlarged uterus displaced to the right side of the pelvis. At surgery, the uterus was found to be involved with adenomyosis. Three-phase bone scintigraphy consisting of blood flow and blood pool images over the anterior pelvis may be a valuable diagnostic aid in the evaluation of lower back or pelvic pain of a woman.
