BACKGROUND: With half a female population, empowering women can be a key factor in our country's global advancement. Focusing on household decision-making and attitudes toward wife beating, our study addresses the dearth of research exploring how different socio-economic and demographic factors associated with women's empowerment evolve over the past decade in Bangladesh (from BDHS 2007 to BDHS 2017-18). METHODS: Data from four waves of Bangladesh Demographic and Health Survey (BDHS, 2007 to BDHS, 2017-18) were used in this study. We put forth two domains-household decision-making and attitudes toward domestic violence-to assess women's empowerment. Principal component analysis (PCA) was employed to create women's empowerment index. To assess the unadjusted association between the selected covariates and women's empowerment, Pearson Chi-square test and ANOVA F test have been used, while adjusted association has been analyzed through proportional odds model (POM). RESULTS: In BDHS 2017-18, women from urban areas experienced 'high' empowerment than women in rural areas (56.08% vs. 45.69%). A notable change has been observed in the distribution of women's empowerment index by education over the survey years. Findings also showed that in all the survey years, division, place of residence, education level, number of living children, media exposure, wealth index, working status, and relationship with household head have been found to have significant association with women's empowerment index. For instance, women who completed secondary education in 2007, 2011, 2014, and 2017-18, respectively have 14.4%, 31.8%, 24.6%, and 39.6% higher odds of having empowerment compared to those who were uneducated. Further, age at first marriage, spousal age gap, NGO membership etc. emerged as a contributing factor in specific survey years. CONCLUSION: Our study affirmed that, over a ten-year period, women were more likely to protest against physical violence and to participate in various decision-making regarding their personal and social life. Empowerment is notably higher among women in urban residents, those with secondary education, 1-2 children, media exposure, and employment. Policy recommendations should emphasize targeted measures to raise awareness and empower uneducated, unemployed, economically disadvantaged, and physically oppressed women.

RESUMEN

Betulinic acid was first time isolated via bioactivity-guided fractionation from ethyl acetate extract of Nyctanthes arbor-tristis leaves. Its structure was established by FTIR, 1H and 13C- nuclear magnetic resonance and high-resolution mass spectrometry. It had shown excellent inhibition of anti-inflammatory properties with IC50 of 10.34 µg/mL (COX-1), 12.92 µg/mL (COX-2), 15.53 µg/mL (5-LOX), 15.21 µg/mL (Nitrite), 16.65 µg/mL (TNF-α), and also exhibited potent antioxidant activity with IC50 of 18.03 µg/mL. The anticancer activity of betulinic acid was evaluated against different human cancer cell lines. It showed significant cytotoxicity against various cancer cell lines with an IC50 of 6.53 (HepG2), 9.34 (A549), 14.92 (HL-60), 16.90 (MCF-7), 17.07 (HCT-116), 13.27 (PC-3), and 12.55 µM (HeLa). This is the first report on isolation and identification of the unreported lupane-type triterpenoid, betulinic acid from leaves of Nyctanthes arbor-tristis, which showed potent anti-inflammatory, antiproliferative, and antioxidant activity in vitro assays.

Pentacene is one of the most versatile organic semiconductors. New synthetic strategies to construct the pentacene skeleton are imperative to produce pentacene derivatives with appropriate solubility, stability, and optoelectronic properties for various applications. This paper describes a template-directed approach to pentacene derivatives. In the retrosynthesis, the acene skeleton is viewed as a laddered double strand polyene instead of the more intuitive linearly fused hexagons. Based on this vision, the template strand of polyene is constructed with Wittig olefination, whereas the second strand is accomplished with Knoevenagel condensation to produce pentacene and tetracene derivatives. The synthetic scheme is flexible enough to generate an array of acene derivatives with substitution patterns that were hitherto difficult to access. Amphiphilic pentacene and tetracene derivatives were also synthesized by the template strategy. One pentacene based amphiphilic rod-coil molecule undergoes self-assembly to form helical wire structures that were visualized with TEM.

RESUMEN

2,3,9,10-Substituted pentacene tetraesters and pentacene diester-dinitriles were synthesized. These pentacene derivatives underwent an unusual solid state [4 + 4] thermal dimerization with good efficiency and complete stereoselectivity. This observation indicates this series of pentacene derivatives adopt π-π stacking geometry with large mutual overlap in solid state. This notion was confirmed by molecualr dynamic simulation.

Previously, we developed an iterative elongation methodology to synthesize acene esters, nitriles, and imides. The strategy uses the concept of bidirectional synthesis, and we can now make a series of electron deficient anthracene, tetracene, and pentacene derivatives via the bidirectional iterative elongation protocol. Central units, used to initiate the bidirectional elongation, were synthesized by employing a double anionic Fries rearrangement as the key step. The photophysical and electrochemical properties of these novel electron acceptors are investigated and interpreted based on the electron withdrawing power of the substitutions. An excited state charge transfer was proposed for one compound to account for its peculiar fluorescent behavior.

The decrease in insulin sensitivity to target tissues or insulin resistance leads to type 2 diabetes mellitus, an insidious disease threatening global health. Numerous evidences made free fatty acids (FFAs) responsible for insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes. We demonstrate here that the damage of insulin acitivity by a free fatty acid, palmitate could be prevented by a lupinoside. An incubation of 3T3 L1 adipocytes with a FFA i.e. palmitate inhibited insulin stimulated uptake of (3)H-2 deoxyglucose (2 DOG) significantly. Addition of a lupinoside purified from Pueraria tuberosa, lupinoside PA(4) (LPA(4)) strongly prevented this inhibition. We then examined insulin signaling pathway where palmitate significantly inhibited insulin stimulated phosphorylation of Insulin receptor tyrosine kinase, IRS 1and PI3 kinase, PDK1 and Akt/PKB. LPA(4) rescued this inhibition of signaling molecule by palmitate. Insulin mediated translocation of Glut4, the glucose transporter in insulin target cells, was effectively blocked by palmitate while, LPA(4) waived this block. Administration of LPA(4) to nutritionally induced diabetic rats significantly reduced the increase in plasma glucose. All these indicate LPA(4) to be a potentially therapeutic agent for insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes.
