OBJECTIVE: There is not enough data in the literature regarding Her-2 overexpression in uterine carcinosarcomas or its association with the prognosis. The aim of this study was to determine the Her-2 overexpression rate in uterine carcinosarcoma and to evaluate its relationship with the prognosis. MATERIAL AND METHOD: Her-2 protein and gene status were evaluated by immunohistochemistry (IHC) and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), respectively, in hysterectomy specimens from 51 patients with uterine carcinosarcoma. RESULTS: Her-2 protein expression in the epithelial component was negative in 42 patients (score 0 in 33 cases, score (+1) in 9 cases), score (+2) in 7 patients and score (+3) in 2 patients. None of the patients had Her-2 protein expression within the sarcomatous component of the tumors. Her-2 gene was not amplified in epithelial or mesenchymal tumor areas according to the FISH method. There was no difference between the Her-2 overexpression negative and positive groups in terms of disease-free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS). Her-2 overexpression was significantly higher in tumors of patients diagnosed at 65 years or older (p=0.046). CONCLUSION: In our study, no relationship could be shown between Her-2 overexpression and prognosis in uterine carcinosarcoma. More comprehensive studies are needed to illustrate the relationship between Her-2 overexpression and carcinosarcoma prognosis.

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to determine whether vitamin C has a protective effect on cisplatin-induced neuropathy in rats. METHODS: In total, 24 rats were included in the study of which 8 rats (no drug administered) were categorized as the control group. The remaining 16 rats were given a total dose of 20 mg/kg cisplatin to induce neuropathy. These drug-administered rats (16 rats) were randomly divided into two groups, namely, group-1 (n=8): cisplatin+saline and group-2 (n=8): cisplatin+vitamin C (500 mg/kg/day). All rats were tested for motor function and electromyographic activity 3 days after cisplatin. Motor performance was evaluated by an inclined-plane test. Compound muscle action potential was evaluated. Plasma malondialdehyde, glutathione, tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin 6, and sciatic nerve HSP 70 levels were measured. Axon diameter and nerve growth factor expression levels were analyzed. RESULTS: Plasma malondialdehyde, tumor necrosis factor-α, and interleukin 6 levels were higher in the cisplatin+saline group than control group (p<0.001). But vitamin C significantly reduced malondialdehyde and inflammatory cytokine levels when compared with the cisplatin+saline group (p<0.001). Glutathione levels were lower in both cisplatin+saline and cisplatin+vitamin C groups than control group, but vitamin C significantly ameliorated the glutathione levels (p<0.05). Sciatic heat shock protein-70 levels were significantly higher in the cisplatin+vitamin C group than cisplatin+saline group. Compound muscle action potential amplitude and inclined plane test scores were significantly improved in the vitamin C group (p<0.05). Axon diameter and nerve growth factor expression ameliorated with vitamin C (p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: We demonstrated the ameliorated effects of vitamin C on cisplatin-induced neuropathy through increased heat shock protein-70, nerve growth factor levels, and reduced inflammatory and oxidant effects. The results are promising to improve the neurotoxic effects of cisplatin in cancer patients.

OBJECTIVE: Granulomatous mastitis (GM) is a challenging inflammatory disorder of the breast. In this study we aimed to present the detailed clinical and morphological features of GM cases, diagnostic clues for specific and idiopathic etiologies, the difficulties in evaluating trucut biopsies, and the results of different therapeutic approaches. MATERIAL AND METHOD: We retrospectively analysed the clinical, radiological and morphological features of 114 GM cases diagnosed with fine needle aspiration, and trucut, incisional, and excisional biopsy. RESULTS: The mean age was 35.8. Only eight cases were older than 45 years. Bilateral involvement was observed in 4 (3.5%) cases. The most common clinical symptoms were breast mass/abscesses, tenderness, and skin changes. Microbiological culture was positive in 4 cases for gram-positive bacteria. Only 3 cases showed a positive tuberculin/PCR test for tuberculosis. The major USG finding was a hypoechoic well-defined or ill-defined mass/abscess; MRI finding was heterogeneous non-mass contrast enhancement. Cases diagnosed with cytology (35 cases) did not have breast malignancy either in their history or clinical follow up period. Fine needle aspiration cytology materials revealed epitheloid granulomas mixed with neutrophils, lymphocytes accompanied by giant cells, and suppurative necrosis. Histopathological reevaluation of 65 trucut/incisional/ excisional biopsies revealed granuloma formation in 65 (100%), Langhans type giant cells in 59 (90.7%), microabscess formation in 41 (63%), caseous necrosis in 1 (1.5%), neutrophilic cysts in 30 (46.1%), eosinophilic infiltration in 48 (73.8%), interlobular inflammation in 14 (21.5%), fat necrosis in 5 (7.6%), ductal ectasia in 6 (9.2%), and lactational changes in 4 (6.1%) cases. Granulomas were lobulocentric in 58 cases, foreign body type/fat necrosis-related in 6 case, and periductular in 1 case. Cystic neutrophilic granulomatous mastitis was observed in one case. We also evaluated the histochemical stains of these 65 biopsies. Only one sample was positive for acido-resistant bacilli (ARB) by the EZN method and one sample was positive for gram-positive bacilli by gram stain. CONCLUSION: Small, superficial trucut biopsies may cause difficulties in determining the etiology and differential diagnosis of granulomatous mastitis. For optimal management and timing the appropriate therapy, the ideal biopsy procedure, special stains, and a multidisciplinary team consisting of the surgeon, pathologist, and radiologist are the most important issues.

AIM: To study (1) ovarian and endometrial damage caused by the hyperglycemia and (2) the effects of dichloroacetic acid (DCA) on follicular reserve and endometrial damage in streptozocin induced diabetic rats. METHODS: This study consisted 24 rats randomly separated into three groups. A diabetes model was achieved in 16 rats experimentally, and normoglycemic eight rats were assigned as control group (Group 1). The rats with diabetes were randomly separated to two groups: 1 mL/kg/day intraperitoneal 0.9% NaCl was given to eight rats as diabetic vehicle (Group 2) and 10 mg/kg/day DCA was given to other eight rats as DCA treated group (Group 3). Hysterectomy with bilateral oophorectomy was performed for histopathological evaluation and blood samples were collected after 4 weeks. RESULTS: Diabetes caused ovarian and endometrial damage (p < 0.0001). Pentraxin-3 (PTX-3), lactic acid, and transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-ß) were higher (p < 0.05, p < 0.05, and p < 0.0001, respectively), whereas anti-Mullerian hormone (AMH) was lower in diabetic rats (p < 0.05). These findings reflected the diabetic damage in the genital tract and diminished ovarian reserve occurred via fibrosis, severe inflammation, and oxidative stress. DCA improved the histopathological fibrosis and degeneration in the ovaries and endometrium (p < 0.05). There was a concominant decrease of TGF-ß and lactic acid levels with DCA treatment (p < 0.05). DCA also improved ovarian reserve with higher AMH levels (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The several unfavored changes in the endometrium and ovaries due to diabetes have been determined in this present study. DCA might provide the continuity of the endometrial cycle, physiological endometrial structure, ovarian follicular growth, oocyte maturation, and physiological ovarian function by decreasing the lactate levels via inhibiting pyruvate dehydrogenase kinase enzyme.

Hydatid disease is a parasitic infection caused by Echinococcus granulosus. Although the liver and lung are the most common sites of hydatid disease, it can also be seen in other organs due to migration via systemic circulation. Paraspinal lumbar hydatid disease without the involvement of other organs is extremely rare. We aimed to present the imaging and histopathological findings of a case with painful lumbar swelling that was later diagnosed as primary lumbar paraspinal hydatid disease. Hydatid disease should be considered as the differential diagnosis in patients with a lumbar paraspinal mass, particularly that containing multiple well-defined, round, small cysts, and in patients living in or traveling to endemic regions.

Symptoms of infantile inflammatory bowel disease (I-IBD) can be life-threatening and associated with poor prognosis. The presence of Mediterranean fever (MEFV) gene mutations play an important role in treatment of I-IBD. In this article, we describe a case of I-IBD with a resistant fistula, in which remission occurred following colchicine therapy. The patient was a six-month-girl with complaints of bloody diarrhea and a perianal abscess of three months duration. Laboratory tests revealed elevated inflammatory parameters, hypoalbuminemia, and anemia. Results of repeated viral, bacterial and parasitic analyses were negative. Endoscopic and histopathological examinations confirmed a diagnosis of I-IBD. Although diarrhea episodes decreased following intensive conventional treatment with immunosuppressive therapy and anti-tumor necrosis factor, the perianal abscess and fistula did not resolve. Molecular genetic analysis to identify causes of infantile disease revealed the MEFV gene mutation. Thus, colchicine was added to the treatment regimen. Following treatment with colchicine, defecation returned to normal, and the fistula resolved. The MEFV gene mutation should be investigated in children with infantile colitis and resistant fistulas, particularly in Mediterranean countries. In patients with infantile colitis who have the MEFV gene mutation, colchicine treatment may be an alternative to intensive immunosuppressive therapy.

Conventional cytomorphologic assessment is the first step to establish an accurate diagnosis in urinary cytology. In cytologic preparations, the separation of low-grade urothelial carcinoma (LGUC) from reactive urothelial proliferation (RUP) can be exceedingly difficult. The bladder washing cytologies of 32 LGUC and 29 RUP were reviewed. The cytologic slides were examined for the presence or absence of the 28 cytologic features. The cytologic criteria showing statistical significance in LGUC were increased numbers of monotonous single (non-umbrella) cells, three-dimensional cellular papillary clusters without fibrovascular cores, irregular bordered clusters, atypical single cells, irregular nuclear overlap, cytoplasmic homogeneity, increased N/C ratio, pleomorphism, nuclear border irregularity, nuclear eccentricity, elongated nuclei, and hyperchromasia (p Ë‚ 0.05), and the cytologic criteria showing statistical significance in RUP were inflammatory background, mixture of small and large urothelial cells, loose monolayer aggregates, and vacuolated cytoplasm (p Ë‚ 0.05). When these variables were subjected to a stepwise logistic regression analysis, four features were selected to distinguish LGUC from RUP: increased numbers of monotonous single (non-umbrella) cells, increased nuclear cytoplasmic ratio, hyperchromasia, and presence of small and large urothelial cells (p = 0.0001). By this logistic model of the 32 cases with proven LGUC, the stepwise logistic regression analysis correctly predicted 31 (96.9%) patients with this diagnosis, and of the 29 patients with RUP, the logistic model correctly predicted 26 (89.7%) patients as having this disease. There are several cytologic features to separate LGUC from RUP. Stepwise logistic regression analysis is a valuable tool for determining the most useful cytologic criteria to distinguish these entities.

OBJECTIVES: This study aims to investigate the role of KRAS/BRAF gene mutation in the pathogenesis of oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 26 OSCC patients (23 males, 3 females; mean age 60 years; range 41 to 77 years) diagnosed between January 2003 and November 2013 were included in the study. The methods used in our study were quantitative fluorescence polymerase chain reaction for KRAS/BRAF mutation analysis. RESULTS: Ten of the tumors were located at the tongue base, 12 in the tonsil and four at the floor of mouth. The mean tumor size was 3.8 cm. Six of the tumors were well differentiated, 18 were moderately differentiated and two were poorly differentiated. All cases were analyzed for KRAS and BRAF gene mutations and none of them showed gene mutations. CONCLUSION: We could not find any relation between OSCC and KRAS/BRAF gene mutations in our short case file. The role of mutations should be analyzed in larger series in OSCC to predict new targeted therapy modalities.

INTRODUCTION: Tumor diameter is a reliable parameter to estimate tumor volume in solid organ cancers; its use in prostate cancer is controversial since it exhibits a more irregular pattern of growth. This study aimed to examine the association between the tumor volume estimations based on transrectal ultrasound (TRUS) guided biopsy results and the tumor volume measured on the pathological specimen. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 237 patients who underwent radical retropubic prostatectomy (RRP) were included in this retrospective study. The differences and correlations between cancer volume estimations based on TRUS guided biopsy findings and cancer volume estimations based on post-prostatectomy pathology specimens were examined. In addition, diagnostic value of TRUS guided biopsy-based volume estimations in order to predict clinically significant cancer (>0.5 cc) were calculated. RESULTS: The mean cancer volume estimated using TRUS biopsy results was lower (5.5±6.5 cc) than the mean cancer volume calculated using prostatectomy specimens (6.4±7.6 cc) (p<0.041).TRUS guided biopsy examination resulted in 5 false positive and 15 false negative cases. There was a significant but weak correlation between the two parameters (r=0.62, p<0.001). Triple negative breast cancer (TNBC), an agressive subtype accounts nearly 15 % of all breast carcinomas. Conventional chemotherapy is the only treatment modality thus new, effective targeted therapy methods have been investigated. Epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) inhibitors give hope according to the recent studies results. Also therapeutic agents have been tried against aberrant p53 signal activity as TNBC show high p53 mutation rates. Our aim was to detect the incidence of mutations/amplifications identified in TNBC in our population. Here we used sequence analysis to detect HER2 (exon 18-23), p53 (exon 5-8) mutations; fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) method to analyse EGFR/chromosome 7 centromere gene status in 82 immunohistochemically TNBC. Basaloid phenotype was identified in 49 (59.8 %) patients. EGFR amplification was noted in 5 cases (6.1 %). All EGFR amplified cases showed EGFR overexpression by immunohistochemistry (IHC). p53 mutations were identified in 33 (40.2 %) cases. Almost 60 % of the basal like breast cancer cases showed p53 mutation. Only one case showed HER2 mutation (exon 20:g.36830_3). Our results showed that gene amplification is not the unique mechanism in EGFR overexpression. IHC might be used in the decision of anti-EGFR therapy in routine practice. p53 mutation rate was lower than the rates reported in the literature probably due to ethnic differences and low sensitivity of sanger sequences in general mutation screening. We also established the rarity of HER2 mutation in TNBC. In conclusion EGFR and p53 are the major targets in TNBC also for our population.

INTRODUCTION: Our aim is to evaluate the influence of clinical and histopathological parameters, including age, gender, tumor stage, grade, tumor differentiation, necrosis, lymphovascular/perineural invasion (LVI/PNI) and concomitant carcinoma in situ (CIS), on outcomes of patients with urothelial carcinoma of the bladder (UCB). MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 84 patients who underwent radical cystectomy (RC) (n = 11) and radical cystoprostatectomy (n = 73) for muscle-invasive bladder cancer at our hospital between 2007-2013, were included in the study. RESULTS: The mean age of patients at diagnosis was 66.1, of whom 75 were males and 9 were females. Of the 84 patients, 38 were ≤65 years and 46 were >65 years. Mean tumor diameter was 3.66 cm. There were 38 cases which showed divergent differentiations. Concomitant CIS was observed in 30 tumors, 41 cases showed tumor necrosis, 44 PNI and 61 LVI. The rate of overall survival (OS) in patients aged ≤65 years was statistically significantly higher than in those aged >65 years. A negative statistical relationship was found between OS with lymph node metastasis (LNM) and tumor differentiation. On the other hand, necrosis did not remain significant on multivariate analysis. No statistically significant relationship was found between smoking, tumor stage, PNI, LVI and concomitant CIS and OS. CONCLUSIONS: In this study, advanced age, LNM, tumor differentiation were found to be independent prognostic risk factors associated with OS after RC. These additional factors, which may explain the different clinical course in patients with similar tumor stage and lymph node status, should be taken into consideration in treatment planning.

OBJECTIVE: Para-aortic lymph node dissemination in endometrioid endometrial cancer is uncommon, and systematic para-aortic lymph node dissection increases morbidity. The purpose of this study was to identify a subgroup of endometrioid endometrial cancer patients who did not require para-aortic lymphadenectomy. STUDY DESIGN: All patients who had undergone surgery for endometrioid endometrial cancer between 1 January 1995 and 31 December 2012 were retrospectively reviewed. Patients with higher risk factors for nodal metastasis and inadequate lymphadenectomy were excluded. Para-aortic lymph node dissemination was defined as nodal metastasis when pelvic and para-aortic lymph node dissection was performed, when para-aortic lymph node recurrence occurred after negative para-aortic lymph node dissection or when para-aortic lymph node dissection was not performed. Multivariate logistic regression models were used to identify the pathological features as predictors for para-aortic lymphatic dissemination. RESULTS: A total of 827 patients were assessed, 516 (62.4%) of whom underwent pelvic and para-aortic lymph node dissection. Sixty-seven (13%) patients (37 with only pelvic, 26 with pelvic and para-aortic, and 4 with only para-aortic metastasis) had positive lymph nodes in the pelvic and para-aortic lymph node dissection group. Multivariate analysis confirmed positive pelvic nodes (odds ratio 20.58; p<0.001) and lymphovascular space invasion (odds ratio 8.10; p=0.022) as independent predictors of para-aortic lymphatic dissemination. When these two factors were absent (in 83% of patients), the predicted probability of para-aortic lymph node metastasis was 0.1%. CONCLUSION: Positive pelvic nodes and lymphovascular space invasion are highly associated with para-aortic lymph node metastasis. These markers may be useful for identifying those patients who require para-aortic lymph node dissection.

The aim of our study is to investigate the effect of sunitinib on diabetes mellitus related-ovarian injury and fibrosis in rat models. An experimental diabetes mellitus model was created in 16 rats, and eight rats with normal blood glucose levels were included in control group (Group-1). The diabetic rats were divided into two groups:diabetic control group (water given) - Group-2 and sunitinib treatment group - Group-3. After four weeks, bilateral oophorectomy was performed and ovaries were examined histologically. The groups were compared by Student's t-test, analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Mann-Whitney's U-test. There was a significant increase in no-medication (water given) diabetic rat's ovary (Group-2) in terms of follicular degeneration, stromal degeneration, stromal fibrosis and NF-kappaB immune-expression compared with control group normal rats' ovary (Group-1) (p < 0.0001). Stromal degeneration (p = 0.04), stromal fibrosis (p = 0.01), follicular degeneration (p = 0.02), NF-kappaB immune-expression (p = 0.001) significantly decreased in sunitinib-treated diabetic rat's ovary (Group-3) when compared with no-medication (water given) diabetic rat's ovary (Group-2) (p < 0.05). When we used sunitinib in the treatment of diabetic rats, ovarian injury, fibrosis and NF-kappaB immunoexpression decreased significantly. The effects of sunitinib in rat models give hope to the improved treatment of premature ovarian failure due to diabetes mellitus in humans.

We aimed to evaluate: (1) endometrial and ovarian tissue injury caused by the glucose toxicity in diabetic rat model and (2) the effect of GLP-1 analog (exenatide) on endometrial and ovarian diabetes induced injury with emphasizing the underlying mechanism. The study group composed of 24 female rats assigned randomly into 3 groups. Group 1 was the control group (n = 8) and received no treatment. Diabetes was induced by intraperitoneal injection of streptozocin for 16 rats which are further assigned randomly into 2 groups: 1 ml/kg intraperitoneal saline was given to Group-2 (diabetic non-treated control group, 8 rats) and 10 µg/kg/day of intraperitoneal exenatide was given to Group 3 (exenatide treated group, 8 rats) for four weeks. After four weeks, blood samples were collected and hysterectomy with bilateral oophorectomy was performed for histopathological examination. Diabetes caused endometrial and ovarian tissue injury in rats (p < 0.0001). Serum transforming growth factor beta (TGF-ß), malonylaldehyde (MDA), pentraxin-3 (PTX-3) levels were higher in diabetic rats (p < 0.0001), whereas antimullerian hormone (AMH) was lower (p < 0.001). Serum levels of these markers reflected that Diabetes induced injury in the reproductive tract occured via oxidative stress, fibrosis and severe inflammation. Diabetes diminished ovarian reserve. Exenatide treatment improved the histological degeneration and fibrosis in the endometrium and ovary with concomitant decrease in inflammatory and oxidative stress markers (p < 0.05). Exenatide also improved ovarian reserve (p < 0.05). Glucose toxicity occured severely in ovary and endometrium in DM. After exenatide treatment; ovarian and endometrial injury and fibrosis seems to decrease significantly. The effects of exenatide in rat models give hope to prevent the women with DM from premature ovarian failure and endometrial dysfunction.

OBJECTIVE: Human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2) oncoprotein is overexpressed in 15-25% of breast carcinomas and associated with poor outcome. Assessment of HER2 status accurately is important to select patients who will benefit from targeted therapy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this study immunohistochemistry (IHC) and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) were used to determine the HER2 status in 308 breast carcinoma cases of which 129 were consultation. The major problems in determining HER2 status and the reasons of discordant results between methods were discussed. RESULTS: HER2 expression was (-) in 124, (+) in 29, (++) in 92, (+++) in 63 cases. 25 of 76 cases consulted as (++) were evaluated as (++) and 15 of 35 cases consulted as (+++) were evaluated as (+++). HER2 amplification was found in 88 (28.6%) of 308 cases by FISH. 3 of 124 (-), 1 of 29 (+), 22 of 92 (++), 62 of 63 (+++) cases were amplified by FISH. The relation between HER2 expression and amplification was statistically significant (p<0.001). Centromere 17 (CEN 17) region amplification was noted in 11 cases of which 2 were (+++), 9 were (++). 6 of the 11 cases showed focal low level, 1 of them showed diffuse high level amplification. CONCLUSION: The concordance rate between IHC (+++) cases and FISH was 95.4% for consultation cases, 100% for our cases. The final concordance rate for both case groups was 98.4%. The possible reasons of discrepancy were triple negativity, preanalytical and analytical procedures of consultation cases and trucut samples.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of diabetes mellitus (DM) on ovarian reserve and injury by considering laboratory and histopathological parameters in rat models. MATERIALS AND METHODS: An experimental DM model was created in 16 rats. Eight rats with normal blood glucose levels were included in the control group. Diabetic rats were divided randomly into two groups: nontreated and resveratrol-treated groups. Histopathological examination and nuclear factor (NF)-κB immunoexpression level determination were performed. Plasma malondialdehyde, glutathione, pentraxin-3, and anti-Müllerian hormone levels were measured. Relations between the variables were compared by Student t test, analysis of variance, and Mann-Whitney U and χ(2) tests. RESULTS: We found statistically significantly lower glutathione and anti-Müllerian hormone levels, and higher malondialdehyde and pentraxin-3 levels in nontreated diabetic group when compared with the control and resveratrol-treated diabetic groups. Stromal degeneration, follicle degeneration, stromal fibrosis scores, and NF-κB immunoexpression levels were significantly higher in nontreated diabetic rats. Primordial and primary follicle counts were significantly lower in the nontreated diabetic group when compared with the control and resveratrol-treated groups. There was no statistically significant difference in secondary and tertiary follicles between these groups. CONCLUSION: These findings provide strong evidence that the ovarian follicle pool in nontreated diabetic rats is affected in the early stages of the follicle development process. We precluded negative effects of DM on ovaries by inhibiting the NF-κB pathway with resveratrol. We thought that the NF-κB pathway plays a role in the pathophysiology of ovarian failure in diabetic rats. Further studies should evaluate this precise mechanism that leads to a decline in the anti-Müllerian hormone levels. In addition, the relationship between this abnormality and reproductive function in diabetic patients should be analyzed further.

AIMS: To evaluate the effect of granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) on the endometrium and ovaries in an experimental diabetes mellitus (DM) rat model. METHODS: A total of 18 female Sprague-Dawley albino mature rats (8 weeks, 200-220 g) were used in this study. Diabetes was induced by intraperitoneal (i.p.) injection of streptozocin randomly in 12 rats. No drug was administered to the remainder of the rats (control group, group 1, n = 6). The other 12 rats were randomly divided into 2 groups; 1 ml/kg i.p. saline was given as vehicle to group 2 (diabetic nontreated control group, n = 6) and 100 µg/kg/day of i.p. G-CSF was given to group 3 (G-CSF-treated group, n = 6) for 4 weeks. After 4 weeks, blood samples were collected and hysterectomy with bilateral oophorectomy was performed for histopathological examination. RESULTS: The mean endometrial gland degeneration and stromal fibrosis scores were significantly higher in group 2 compared with groups 1 and 3. Ovarian follicle degeneration, stromal degeneration and stromal fibrosis scores were significantly higher in group 2 compared with groups 1 and 3. Plasma TGF-ß and malondialdehyde levels were significantly lower in groups 1 and 3 compared with group 2. Antimüllerian hormone levels were significantly lower in group 2 compared with groups 1 and 3. CONCLUSION: Glucose toxicity occurred severely in the ovaries and endometrium of the DM rats. After G-CSF treatment, ovarian and endometrial injury and fibrosis scores decreased significantly. The effects of G-CSF in rat models give hope to improved treatment of human DM complications such as premature ovarian failure and endometrial dysfunction.

Haemangiomas, the most common type of benign vascular tumours, are rare in the oral cavity. Some of these lesions are congenital and show symptoms in late childhood or early adult life. A 32-years-old woman presented with a huge lesion on her tongue which caused dysphagia and dysphasia. She had first noticed the lesion when she was 6. Her obstructive symptoms started when she was 28 and, despite various medical treatments, the size of the lesion gradually increased. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a 7 x 5 x 3 cm mass on the right side of the tongue. Because of severe functional and cosmetic problems, the lesion was excised with partial haemiglossectomy. Histopathological examination was consistent with intramuscular haemangioma. Haemangiomas are benign tumours with a benign course and are rarely seen on the tongue. They have clinical importance when localised in the oral cavity. Different treatment modalities exist, but in cases of large tumours, surgery may be the mainstay treatment.
