RESUMEN

Benign osteoblastoma is a very rare, bone tumour occurring in the facial region. These lesions are most frequently seen in long bones. They are characterised by proliferation of compact or cancellous bone. The lesion is usually asymptomatic until it causes significant facial asymmetry or displacement of the teeth if present in the alveolar region. The clinical appearance of osteoblastoma is very similar to peripheral ossifying fibroma or any fibro-osseous lesion. The tumour is characterised by bone formation along with the presence of numerous osteoblasts. This case report describes the presence of a bony hard mass in the right side of mandible of a 27-year-old female patient with the chief complaint of a painless growth since past 10 years. The growth slowly increased in size displacing the teeth associated with it. The patient also complained of difficulty in speech and mastication.

RESUMEN

AIM: Contamination of etched enamel with saliva has been shown to result in sealant failure. Recently, a hydrophilic sealant has been introduced. In absence of documented literature, this in vitro study was undertaken to ascertain the efficacy of Embrace Wet Bond without reduction of microtensile bond strength in the different moisture contamination. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A 5mm block of sealant were built over prepared occlusal surface of 40 non-carious therapeutically extracted third molars which were sectioned into 1mm thick stick and tested using Zwick micro tensile tester. Obtained data were subjected to descriptive analysis, one-way ANOVA and Scheffe's post-hoc tests. RESULTS: Mean microtensile bond strength of Embrace sealant was not significantly lowered in different moisture contamination groups except Group 3 (air drying), which showed very highly significant (p<0.001) decrease in µTBS as compared to Group 1 (non-contaminated). CONCLUSION: Mean µTBS of Embrace sealant remains largely unchanged even in presence of moisture. Owing to its hydrophilic property, this sealant can be a great help in cases where maintaining isolation is difficult.

RESUMEN

Idiopathic root resorption is a very rare phenomenon. Resorption in tooth is brought about by odontoclastic activity. Special mechanisms in the periodontal ligament exist to prevent mineralization of the periodontal ligament and these periodontal ligament cells produce factors that inhibit mineralized tissue resorption and are capable of regulating bone and cementum formation. When this mechanism is disturbed it manifests in resorption of root structure. This case report is of a 28-year-old male with a very rare phenomenon where external resorption of both cervical and apical portion of root of multiple teeth was observed and it is documented for the first time.

RESUMEN

Children may be born with birth defects, the most common being oro-facial clefts and fissural cysts. A well circumscribed pedunculated soft tissue growth that occurs congenitally is known as congenital epulis of the newborn or 'Neuman's Tumour' as described in the literature. It is a rare lesion and the diagnosis has to be confirmed histologically. We present a rare case of a 7-year-old child with a congenital growth in the pre-maxillary region of the anterior hard palate clinically diagnosed as congenital epulis however, histologically confirmed as a mucous retention cyst. An elaborate clinical differential diagnosis is discussed. The anterior hard palate is devoid of salivary glands and the presence of a mucous retention cyst in the area is suggestive of ectopic salivary gland tissue and in a child manifesting at birth is probably the first case to be reported in the English literature.

OBJECTIVES: The identification and radiographic interpretation of periapical bone lesions is important for accurate diagnosis and treatment. The present study was undertaken to study the feasibility and diagnostic accuracy of colour coded digital radiographs in terms of presence and size of lesion and to compare the diagnostic accuracy of colour coded digital images with direct digital images and conventional radiographs for assessing periapical lesions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixty human dry cadaver hemimandibles were obtained and periapical lesions were created in first and second premolar teeth at the junction of cancellous and cortical bone using a micromotor handpiece and carbide burs of sizes 2, 4 and 6. After each successive use of round burs, a conventional, RVG and colour coded image was taken for each specimen. All the images were evaluated by three observers. The diagnostic accuracy for each bur and image mode was calculated statistically. RESULTS: Our results showed good interobserver (kappa > 0.61) agreement for the different radiographic techniques and for the different bur sizes. Conventional Radiography outperformed Digital Radiography in diagnosing periapical lesions made with Size two bur. Both were equally diagnostic for lesions made with larger bur sizes. Colour coding method was least accurate among all the techniques. CONCLUSION: Conventional radiography traditionally forms the backbone in the diagnosis, treatment planning and follow-up of periapical lesions. Direct digital imaging is an efficient technique, in diagnostic sense. Colour coding of digital radiography was feasible but less accurate however, this imaging technique, like any other, needs to be studied continuously with the emphasis on safety of patients and diagnostic quality of images.

RESUMEN

Taurodontism is anatomical and morphological alteration in the shape of the tooth. In taurodontism the crowns appear larger and the roots shorter compared to the normal anatomy of the respective tooth. The incidence of taurodontism in deciduous is very low and is also not very common in permanent dentition. The endodontic treatment protocol of taurodontic tooth is challenging. Taurodontic tooth requires a very cautious approach in identifying the root canal orientation and presence of any extra or lateral canals.

RESUMEN

Hutchinson-Gilford progeria syndrome (HGPS) is a rare pediatric genetic syndrome with incidence of one per eight million live births. The disorder is characterised by premature aging, generally leading to death at approximately 13.4 years of age. This is a follow-up study of a 9-year-old male with clinical and radiographic features highly suggestive of HGPS and presented here with description of differential diagnosis and dental consideration. This is the first case report of HGPS which showed pectus carinatum structure of chest.

RESUMEN

Pleomorphic adenoma (PA), also called benign mixed tumor, is the most common tumor of the salivary glands. About 90% of these tumors occur in the parotid gland and 10% in the minor salivary glands. Juvenile PAs are uncommon and about 5-10% of minor salivary gland PA affects patients aged 20 years and under. The most common sites of PA of the minor salivary glands are the palate followed by lips and cheek. Other rare reported sites include the throat, floor of the mouth, tongue, tonsil, pharynx, retromolar area and nasal cavity. The masticator space is a deep facial space with a complex anatomical structure where PA is not known to occur. Here, we report an unusual case of PA of left masticator space in a 16-year-old girl patient, which to the best of our knowledge is the first reported case in English language literature.

RESUMEN

Bisphosphonates (BPs) are a class of agents used to treat osteoporosis and malignant bone metastasis. Despite these benefits, osteonecrosis of the jaws has recently emerged as a significant complication in a subset of patients receiving these drugs. This case presentation focuses on a 62-year-old man with a 3-year history of monthly use of Zometa (zolendronic acid) for treatment of multiple myeloma, resulting in BP-related osteoradionecrosis of the jaws (BRONJ). This new entity remains a challenge with diagnosis as well as treatment. The goal of this paper is to improve clinicians understanding and provide a guideline for establishing a stage-specific diagnosis and prevention of BRONJ.
