Multiple organ dysfunction caused by parathyroid adenoma-induced primary hyperparathyroidism.

We present a 27-year-old male with multiple organ dysfunction caused by parathyroid adenoma-induced primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT). Initially, the patient experienced a sudden onset of gastrointestinal symptoms, polyuria, polydipsia, bone pain, renal dysfunction, nephrolithiasis, and acute pancreatitis, symptoms associated with hypercalcemia. Biochemical findings suggested PHPT. Renal biopsy showed an acute tubular injury and massive calcium deposits in the tubular epithelial cells and tubular lumina. Moreover, neck ultrasonography suggested the possibility of a parathyroid tumor. We excised his right parathyroid gland. Histopathological analysis revealed features of a parathyroid adenoma. Post-operatively this patient had normal serum calcium concentration, but was renally insufficient. A recent repeat biopsy showed chronic renal tubular injury. Our findings illustrate the complications of various systems that can occur in patients with PHPT caused by a parathyroid adenoma.

Demonstration of high-Q mid-infrared chalcogenide glass-on-silicon resonators.

We demonstrated high-index-contrast, waveguide-coupled As2Se3 chalcogenide glass resonators monolithically integrated on silicon fabricated using optical lithography and a lift-off process. The resonators exhibited a high intrinsic quality factor of 2×10(5) at 5.2 µm wavelength, which is among the highest values reported in on-chip mid-infrared (mid-IR) photonic devices. The resonator can serve as a key building block for mid-IR planar photonic circuits.

Engineering broadband and anisotropic photoluminescence emission from rare earth doped tellurite thin film photonic crystals.

Broadband and anisotropic light emission from rare-earth doped tellurite thin films is demonstrated using Er3+-TeO2 photonic crystals (PhCs). By adjusting the PhC parameters, photoluminescent light can be efficiently coupled into vertical surface emission or lateral waveguide propagation modes. Because of the flexibility of light projection direction, Er3+-TeO2 is a potential broadband light source for integration with three-dimensional photonic circuits and on-chip biochemical sensors.

Paragonimiasis in Sin Ho District, Lai Chau Province, Viet Nam.

Forty-four cases of pulmonary paragonimiasis, two also with evidence of cerebral infection, were found in Sin Ho District in Northern Viet Nam. There were 30 males and 14 females, 2-30 years of age. The diagnosis was made by sputum examination. Pet dogs and wild dogs in the area were also found infected and the people often eat roasted crabs.

Ultrasonic phased array controller for hyperthermia applications.

Multiple and mechanically scanned ultrasound transducer systems have demonstrated the efficacy of using ultrasound to produce deep localized hyperthermia. The use of ultrasonic phased arrays has been proposed as an alternative to these systems. A phased array offers a more flexible approach to heating tumours in that the size, shape, and position of its focal region can be altered during the course of treatment in order to achieve the desired temperature distribution. This added flexibility comes at the cost of increased complexity of the hardware necessary to drive the transducer because each element requires its own amplifer with both phase and amplitude control. In order for phased arrays with large numbers of elements to be feasible for hyperthermia applications, the complexity of this circuitry must be minimized. This paper describes a circuit design which simplifies the electronics required to control a phased array transducer system for hyperthermia applications. The design is capable of controlling virtually any type of phased array transducer operating at frequencies less than 2 MHz. The system performance was verified through beam profile measurements using a 48-element tapered phased array transducer.

Beijing moves to curb population growth.

PIP: Education and incentives are being used to encourage a "one-child for one-family" campaign in Beijing. The goal is to reduce its population growth rate to 5%/1000 by 1985. Parents who have only child will receive a certificate entitling the only child to preferential treatment for nursery or kindergarten and medical care. 1-child families will receive an annual bonus of 60 yuan. Those who have more than 2 children will be taxed a minimum of 10% of salaries. Single, childless people will receive their full salaries as pensions on retirement. All urban families will receive the same housing space no matter what size the family. The same will be true for the size of small plots of land parcelled out for private use in the rural suburban area. Sterilization operations are available for those who wish them. Parents with 1 child who have such operations can have their tubes rejoined free of charge if their child is disabled or dies. The average growth rate for China projected for 1978-1000 is 1.2%.^ieng
