RESUMEN

An 84-year-old woman presented with left leg radiating pain for 18 months and a numeric rating scale score of 8. From examination, motoric on left knee extension was grade 4, with dysesthesia and numbness along the left anterolateral thigh. Imaging showed left L3-4 foraminal and lateral recess stenosis with severe-degree scoliosis. The patient underwent navigation-guided endoscopic transforaminal foraminotomy and lateral recess decompression on the left L3-4 level with a good outcome. Three-years' follow-up showed a well-maintained clinical outcome and coronal sagittal balance. This video explores navigation-guided endoscopic lumbar decompression for neural compression in advanced scoliosis. Further research is encouraged to establish long-term efficacy. STUDY DESIGN: A randomized controlled trial. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to compare the efficacy of allografts and bioactive glass-ceramic (BG) cages for anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF) in treating cervical degenerative disc disease. METHODS: We conducted a single-center, randomized controlled trial between August 2017 and August 2022. Participants were randomized into two groups, and consecutive patients requiring ACDF were randomly assigned to receive either the allograft cage or the BG cage. The surgical outcomes measured included pain levels, neck disability, surgical details, and radiological assessments. RESULTS: Of the 45 assessed, 40 participants were included, with 18 in the allograft cage group and 22 in the BG cage group. By the 12-month follow-up, both groups exhibited significant improvements in pain levels and disability scores, with no notable intergroup differences. Over 85% of patients in both groups were satisfied with their outcomes. Radiological assessments revealed stability in the cervical spine with both cage types post intervention. Although both materials showed a trend toward increased subsidence over time, the difference between them was not statistically significant. Fusion rates were comparable between the groups at 12 months, with BG cage showing a slightly higher early fusion rate at 6 months. No significant differences were observed between the two groups in terms of complications. CONCLUSIONS: Both allograft and BG cages are effective in ACDF surgeries for cervical degenerative disc disease, with both contributing to substantial postoperative improvements. Differences in disc height, interspinous motion, and subsidence were not significant in the last follow-up, indicating both materials' suitability for clinical use. Future research with a larger cohort and longer follow-up is needed to confirm these preliminary findings.

Chlorothalonil is an organochlorine fungicide that blocks the respiratory process of cells and persists in agricultural products because it is used extensively to prevent fungal diseases. An analytical method of chlorothalonil using the modified QuEChERS method and gas chromatography- mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS) was developed to analyze the residue in agricultural commodities distributed in Republic of Korea. Acetonitrile, including acetic acid and formic acid, was used to compare the extraction efficiency. The extraction and purification processes were established by comparing three versions of the QuEChERS method and various dispersive solid-phase extraction (d-SPE) combinations. Ultimately, 1% formic acid in acetonitrile with QuEChERS original salts and d-SPE (PSA, C18) were selected for the extraction and clean-up procedures for method validation and establishment. Five agricultural commodities, viz., brown rice, mandarin, soybean, pepper, and potato, were examined to validate the established method, which displayed excellent linearity, with a coefficient of determination of R2 = 0.9939-0.997 in the calibration curve range of 0.002-0.1 mg/kg. The limits of detection (LOD) and quantification (LOQ) were calculated to be 0.003 mg/kg and 0.01, respectively, for the method. The LOQ value satisfied the suitable level for the Positive List System (PLS). The mean recovery of chlorothalonil was 79.3-104.1%, and the coefficient of variation was <17.9% for intra- and inter-day precision at 0.01, 0.1, and 0.5 mg/kg. The matrix effects in the five commodities were confirmed by the ion suppression effects, except for brown rice, in which a medium enhancement effect was observed at 21.4%. Chlorothalonil was detected in eight apples, one watermelon, and one cucumber. Ultimately, chlorothalonil was detected in ten agricultural products. Thus, this analytical method could be used for the routine detection of chlorothalonil in agricultural products, and the data may be used to inform and improve current food policies.

The development of efficient methods for evaluating pesticide residues is essential in order to ensure the safety and quality of agricultural products since the Republic of Korea implemented the Positive List System (PLS). The objective of this research was to establish a method for the simultaneous analysis of 322 pesticide residues in fruits and vegetables (such as coffee, potato, corn, and chili pepper), using the quick, easy, cheap, effective, rugged, and safe (QuEChERS) approach in combination with gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS). This study introduces a robust, high-throughput GC-MS/MS method for screening the target pesticide residues in agricultural products, achieving the PLS criterion of 0.01 mg/kg LOQ. Despite some compounds not aligning with the CODEX recovery guideline, sufficient reproducibility was confirmed, attesting to the method's applicability in qualitative analyses. A health risk assessment conducted using estimated daily intake/acceptable daily intake ratios indicated low risks associated with product consumption (<0.035391%), thereby confirming their safety. This efficient method holds significant implications for the safe distribution of agricultural products, including during import inspections.

The development of robust and efficient methods for constructing and joining complex metal specimens with high bonding quality and durability is of paramount importance for various industries, e.g., aerospace, deep space, and automobiles. This study investigated the fabrication and characterization of two types of multilayered specimens prepared by tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding: Ti-6Al-4V/V/Cu/Monel400/17-4PH (Specimen 1) and Ti-6Al-4V/Nb/Ni-Ti/Ni-Cr/17-4PH (Specimen 2). The specimens were fabricated by depositing individual layers of each material onto a Ti-6Al-4V base plate, and subsequently welding them to the 17-4PH steel. The specimens exhibited an effective internal bonding without any cracks, accompanied by a high tensile strength, with Specimen 1 exhibiting a significantly higher tensile strength than Specimen 2. However, the substantial interlayer penetration of Fe and Ni in the Cu and Monel layers of Specimen 1 and the diffusion of Ti along the Nb and Ni-Ti layers in Specimen 2 resulted in a nonuniform elemental distribution, raising concerns about the lamination quality. This study successfully achieved elemental separation of Fe/Ti and V/Fe, which is vital for preventing the formation of detrimental intermetallic compounds, particularly in the fabrication of complex multilayered specimens, representing the prime novelty of this work. Our study highlights the potential of TIG welding for the fabrication of complex specimens with high bonding quality and durability.

PURPOSE: The retrospective study aimed to report the surgical technique and clinic-radiological outcomes of endoscopic anterior to psoas interbody lumbar fusion through the retroperitoneal approach with direct and indirect decompression. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed the results of clinical parameters of patients who underwent endoscopic anterior to psoas interbody lumbar fusion between June 2013 and June 2022. Clinical outcomes were evaluated by the visual analog scale (VAS) and Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) scores. The radiological outcomes were measured and statistically compared in disc height index (DHI), whole lumbar lordosis (WLL), pelvic Incidence (PI), pelvic tilt (PT), Segmental lordosis (SL), the sagittal vertical axis (SVA). RESULTS: A total of 35 patients were selected for the procedure ranging in age from 51 to 84 years with 17.83 ± 8.85 months follow-up. The mean operation time in lateral position for one level was 162.96 ± 35.76 min (n = 24), and 207.73 ± 66.60 min for two-level fusion. The mean endoscopic time was 32.83 ± 17.71 min per level, with a total estimated blood loss of 230.57 ± 187.22 cc. The mean postoperative VAS back, leg pain score and ODI improved significantly compared to the preoperative values; Radiological data showed significant change in WLL, SL, DHI, PI, PT, and SS; however, there is no significant difference in SVA postoperatively. Subgroup analysis for the radiographic data showed 50 mm length cage has significantly improved for the DHI, SS and SVA compare to 40 mm length cage. The subgroup analysis results showed that hypertensive patients had significantly higher proportion in the incomplete fusion group compare to complete fusion group at one-year follow-up. OUTCOMES: The endoscopic anterior to psoas interbody lumbar fusion achieves satisfactory indirect and direct decompression. This convergent technique presents an effective choice for treating lumbar instability associated with disc herniations and foraminal stenosis, thus complementing the indications for oblique lumbar interbody fusion.

Collagen-derived dipeptides and tripeptides have various physiological activities. In this study, we compared the plasma kinetics of free Hyp, peptide-derived Hyp, Pro-Hyp, cyclo(Pro-Hyp), Hyp-Gly, Gly-Pro-Hyp, and Gly-Pro-Ala after ingestion of four different collagen samples: AP collagen peptide (APCP), general collagen peptide, collagen, and APCP and γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) combination. Each peptide was measured by high-performance liquid chromatography and triple quadrupole mass spectrometer. We found that, among all the peptides that were analyzed, only Gly-Pro-Hyp was significantly increased after ingestion of APCP compared with that of general collagen peptides and collagen. In addition, ingestion of the APCP and GABA combination improved the absorption efficiency of Gly-Pro-Ala. Finally, we reveal that Gly-Pro-Hyp was effective for preventing H2O2-induced reduction in extracellular matrix (ECM)-related genes, COL1A, elastin, and fibronectin, in dermal fibroblasts. Taken together, APCP significantly enhances the absorption of Gly-Pro-Hyp, which might act as an ECM-associated signaling factor in dermal fibroblasts, and the APCP and GABA combination promotes Gly-Pro-Ala absorption. OBJECTIVE: A preliminary report from a single institution, noninferiority, prospective randomized controlled trial is conducted to determine the effectiveness of interlaminar endoscopic lumbar discectomy (IELD) versus microscopic lumbar discectomy (MLD) for the treatment of L5-S1 lumbar disc herniation (LDH). METHODS: This prospective, noncrossover, randomized controlled trials was conducted at a single neurosurgical center. Patients with symptomatic radiculopathy or intermittent neurogenic claudication caused by LDH were enrolled from July 2016 to July 2021. The study compared the effectiveness of microscopic and full-endoscopic discectomy procedures. Outcome measures included visual analogue scale (VAS) scores for back and leg pain, Oswestry Disability Index scores, radiologic measurements, endurance time of walking, and satisfaction rate. RESULTS: Of 37 assessed patients, both IELD and MLD groups demonstrated significant improvements in VAS scores for pain over time, with no significant difference between them. For secondary outcomes, the IELD group had a shorter hospital stay and reduced blood loss but a longer operation time than the MLD group. Radiographic evaluations showed no change compared to preoperative data. Patient satisfaction and recovery rates were slightly higher for the MLD group, but both groups were comparable in most evaluations, with complications being minimal. CONCLUSION: The IELD was noninferior in improving the intensity of back and leg pain and functional disability, compared to the MLD. Additionally, the IELD showed no difference in clinical outcomes for patients in terms of radiographic results and patient satisfaction rates. The results of this research preliminarily demonstrate that the IELD could be considered an effective alternative to MLD for L5-S1 central or paracentral LDH.

BACKGROUND: Digit ratio (2D:4D), a marker of prenatal testosterone exposure, is a weak negative correlate of sports/athletic/fitness performance. While numerous studies have examined the relationship between 2D:4D and physical fitness, there has never been a comprehensive study that has synthesized studies examining relationships between 2D:4D and muscular fitness. OBJECTIVES: To systematically review and meta-analyze the relationship between 2D:4D and muscular fitness measured as handgrip strength (HGS). METHODS: We systematically searched five electronic databases, reference lists, topical systematic reviews/meta-analyses, and personal libraries in November 2020. Peer-reviewed, cross-sectional studies that reported Pearson's correlation coefficients between objectively measured 2D:4D and HGS were included. We used random-effects meta-analysis to estimate the pooled correlation and the 95% confidence interval (95%CI), and moderator analyses to estimate the influence of sex and age. RESULTS: Data from 22 studies, representing 5271 individuals from 11 countries ranging in (mean) age from 10.4 to 58.0 years, were included. Overall, there was a weak negative correlation between 2D:4D and HGS (r = -0.15, 95%CI = -0.20 to -0.09), indicating that individuals with low 2D:4Ds had high HGS. We found substantial heterogeneity between studies (Q = 123.4, p < .0001; I2  = 74%), but neither sex (Q = 0.003, p = .96) nor age (Q = 0.46, p = .50) significantly moderated the pooled correlation. CONCLUSIONS: We found a weak negative relationship between 2D:4D and HGS, which showed substantial heterogeneity between studies, but was neither moderated by sex nor age. Our finding probably reflects both the long-term (organizational) and short-term (activational) benefits of testosterone.

The stratum corneum (SC) is the outermost layer of the epidermis and plays an important role in maintaining skin moisture and protecting the skin from the external environment. Ceramide and natural moisturizing factor (NMF) are the major SC components that maintain skin moisture. In this study, we investigated whether the oral intake of enzymatically decomposed AP collagen peptides (APCPs) can improve skin moisture and barrier function by assessing changes in the ceramide and NMF contents in the SC after APCP ingestion with the aim to develop a skin functional food. Fifty participants orally ingested APCP (1000 mg) or placebo for 12 weeks, and then, skin hydration and skin texture were evaluated. SC samples were collected to analyze skin scaling, ceramide, and NMF contents. Participants in the APCP group exhibited improved skin moisture content by 7.33% (p = 0.031) and roughness by -4.09% (p = 0.036) when compared with those in the placebo group. NMF content; the amounts of amino acids (AA), including glycine and proline; and AA derivatives were significantly increased in the APCP group (31.98 µg/mg protein) compared to those in the placebo group (-16.01 µg/mg protein) (p = 0.006). The amounts of total ceramides and ceramide subclasses were significantly higher in the APCP group than in the placebo group (p = 0.014). In conclusion, our results demonstrate that APCP intake improves skin moisture and increase the ceramide and NMF contents in the SC, thereby enhancing the skin barrier function.

BACKGROUND: Ginseng is a commonly used herbal medicine in treating various medical conditions. Chronic gut inflammation is a recognized factor for the development of colorectal cancer (CRC). In this project, Asian ginseng berry polysaccharide preparations were used to assess their effects on CRC and related immune regulation mechanisms. METHODS: Ginseng berry polysaccharide extract (GBPE) and purified ginseng berry polysaccharide portion (GBPP) were used to evaluate their activities on human HCT-116 and HT-29 CRC cell proliferation. Interleukin-8 secretion analysis was performed on HT-29 cells. Naive CD4 cell isolation and T-helper cell differentiation were performed and determined using flow cytometry for Th1 and Treg in addition to cell cycle and apoptotic investigation. RESULTS: GBPE and GBPP significantly inhibited interleukin-8 secretion and cancer cell proliferation, inhibited CD4+IFN-γ+ cell (Th1) differentiation, and decreased CD4+FoxP3+ cell (Treg) differentiation. Compared to the GBPE, GBPP showed more potent antiinflammatory activities on the malignant cells. This is consistent with the observation that GBPP can also inhibit Th1-cell differentiation better, suggesting that it has an important role in antiinflammation, whereas Treg cells hinder the body's immune response against malignancies. Supported by cell cycle and apoptosis data, GBPE and GBPP, at various degrees, remarkably enhanced the anticancer activities of 5-fluorouracil. CONCLUSION: Data from this project suggested that Asian ginseng berry potentially has clinical utility in managing enteric inflammation and suppressing CRC through immunomodulation mechanisms.

Ginseng root has been used in traditional oriental medicine for the enhancement of immune system function. The immunostimulatory effects of ginseng berry polysaccharides, however, remain unclear. Effects of polysaccharides from ginseng berry on the activation of natural killer (NK) cells and inhibition of tumors are reported. A crude polysaccharide was isolated from ginseng berry as a ginseng berry polysaccharide portion (GBPP) and was further fractionated using gel filtration chromatography to obtain the three polysaccharide fractions GBPP-I, -II and -III. GBPP-I consisted of mainly galactose (46.9%) and arabinose (27.5%). GBPP-I showed a high dose-dependent anticomplementary activity. Stimulation of murine peritoneal macrophages by GBPP-I showed the greatest enhancement of interleukin (IL)-6 and IL-12 and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)- α production. In addition, an ex vivo assay of natural killer (NK) cell activity showed that oral ( p.o.) administration of GBPP-I significantly increased NK cell cytotoxicity in YAC-1 tumor cells and production of granzyme B. Prophylactic intravenous ( i.v.) and p.o. administration of GBPP-I significantly and dose-dependently inhibited lung metastatic activity in B16BL6 melanoma cells. Depletion of NK cells after injection of rabbit anti-asialo GM1 partially abolished the inhibitory effect of GBPP-I on lung metastasis, indicating that NK cells play an important role in anticancer effects. GBPP-I exerts a strong immune-enhancing activity and can prevent cancer metastasis through activation of NK cells and other immune-related cells.

Iatrogenic injuries due to intramuscular (IM) injection, although less frequently reported than before, are still common. The sciatic nerve is the most commonly injured nerve because of an IM injection owing to its large size and the buttock being a common injection site. Iatrogenic injury to the sciatic nerve resulting from a misplaced gluteal IM injection is a persistent problem worldwide affecting patients in economically rich and poor countries alike. The consequences of sciatic nerve injection injury (SNII) are potentially devastating and may result in serious neurological and medico-legal problems. A 68-year-old male presented with intractable neuropathic pain from SNII that occurred during gluteal IM injection of an analgesic for post-appendectomy pain. This chronic SNII pain did not improve despite his gradual recovery from weakness in the left foot. Partial improvement was seen following an external neurolysis, performed three months post-appendectomy. SNII is a preventable complication of gluteal IM injection. While the complete avoidance of gluteal IM injection is desirable, should need arise, the use of an appropriate administrative technique is recommended.

Panax ginseng has long been used as natural medicine and health food all over the world. Cancer is a major cause of death worldwide and its prognosis likely depends on the immune system during tumor treatment. In this study, ginseng berry polysaccharides were evaluated for their immunostimulant and anti-cancer effects. Ginseng berry polysaccharide portion (GBPP) was used to investigate its effects on anti-complementary activity, peritoneal macrophage activation, and natural killer (NK) cell cytotoxicity. Moreover, both intravenous (i.v.) and oral administration of GBPP prior to B16-BL6 melanoma implantation in mice was evaluated. GBPP significantly increased the anti-complementary activity and cytokine production including interleukin (IL)-6, IL-12, and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, dose-dependently. Splenocytes obtained after i.v. administration of GBPP showed cytolytic activity in Yac-1 cells in proportion to the E/T ratio. In addition, GBPP enhanced the production of interferon (IFN)-γ and granzyme B of NK cells. For the experimental lung cancer, compared with control mice, GBPP delivered by i.v. suppressed cancer by 48% at 100 µg/mouse, while a 37% reduction was achieved by oral administration. Deficient of NK cells in animal model demonstrated that the anti-cancer effect of GBPP was through NK cell activation. Results of this study suggest that ginseng berry polysaccharides, owing to their modulation of the immune response, can be a potential curative applicant for the prevention and treatment of tumors.

The preparation of crystalline materials on incommensurate substrates has been a key topic of epitaxy. van der Waals (vdW) epitaxy on two-dimensional (2D) materials opened novel opportunities of epitaxial growth overcoming the materials compatibility issue. Therefore, vdW epitaxy has been considered as a promising approach for the preparation of building blocks of flexible devices and thin film-based devices at the nano/microscale. However, an understanding of vdW epitaxy has not been thoroughly established. Especially, controlling nucleation during vdW epitaxy has not been achieved although nucleation in vdW epitaxy is suppressed due to the absence of surface dangling bonds on 2D materials. Here we show an enhancement of nucleation probability of germanium on graphene via introducing an out-of-plane dipole moment without any change in the chemical nature of graphene. A graphene/hexagonal boron nitride stack and transferred graphene on a polarized ferroelectric thin film were employed to demonstrate the significant enhancement of Ge nucleation on graphene. Theoretical calculations and chemical vapor deposition were employed to elucidate the effect of the out-of-plane dipole moment on nucleation in vdW epitaxy.

The purpose of this study was to describe and examine the occupational socialization of nine adapted physical educators (APEs). The questions we attempted to answer were (a) What were the perspectives and practices of the APEs? and (b) What factors influenced these perspectives and practices? Data were collected through six qualitative techniques and analyzed by using analytic induction and constant comparison. At the time the study was conducted, the APEs possessed traditional or progressive teaching orientations. They had been attracted to a career as an APE through their participation in sport and physical activity and interactions with persons with disabilities. The quality of adapted physical education teacher education the APEs received varied, but high-quality adapted physical education teacher education appeared to exert a powerful influence on their values and pedagogies. The school cultures and conditions in which the APEs worked on entry into the workforce either served to support or negate their programs. We conclude the paper by providing several hypotheses regarding the influences of occupational socialization on in-service APEs' teaching.

BACKGROUND: Antihyperglycemic effects of Panax ginseng berry have never been explored in humans. The aims of this study were to assess the efficacy and safety of a 12-wk treatment with ginseng berry extract in participants with a fasting glucose level between 100 mg/dL and 140 mg/dL. METHODS: This study was a 12-wk, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial. A total of 72 participants were randomly allocated to two groups of either ginseng berry extract or placebo, and 63 participants completed the study. The parameters related to glucose metabolism were assessed. RESULTS: Although the present study failed to show significant antihyperglycemic effects of ginseng berry extract on the parameters related to blood glucose and lipid metabolism in the total study population, it demonstrated that ginseng berry extract could significantly decrease serum concentration of fasting glucose by 3.7% (p = 0.035), postprandial glucose at 60 min during 75 g oral glucose tolerance test by 10.7% (p = 0.006), and the area under the curve for glucose by 7.7% (p = 0.024) in those with fasting glucose level of 110 mg/dL or higher, while the placebo group did not exhibit a statistically significant decrease. Safety profiles were not different between the two groups. CONCLUSION: The present study suggests that ginseng berry extract has the potential to improve glucose metabolism in human, especially in those with fasting glucose level of 110 mg/dL or higher. For a more meaningful benefit, further research in people with higher blood glucose levels is required.

The root of Asian ginseng (Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer) has been used for centuries in Oriental medicine to improve general well-being and to relieve various medical conditions. It is commonly understood that ginsenosides are responsible for the pharmacological activities of ginseng. Compared to the root of ginseng, studies on the berry are considerably limited. In this study, we evaluated the effects of polysaccharides from Asian ginseng berries on plasma lipid levels, chemically-induced enteric inflammation and neoplasm, and cancer chemoprevention in different experimental models. We tested two polysaccharide preparations: regular ginseng berry polysaccharide extract (GBPE) and ginseng berry polysaccharide portion (GBPP, removed MV [Formula: see text]). We first observed that both oral GBPE and oral GBPP significantly reduced plasma cholesterol and triglycerides levels in a dose-related manner in ob/ob mice, without obvious body weight changes. Then, in AOM/DSS-induced acute colitis mice, GBPE and GBPP significantly ameliorated the increased gut disease activity index and inhibited the reduction of the colon length. Further, the berry polysaccharides significantly suppressed chemically-induced pro-inflammatory cytokine levels. This is consistent with the observation that GBPE and GBPP attenuated tumorigenesis in mice by significantly and dose-dependently reducing tumor load. Finally, in vitro HCT-116 and HT-29 human colon cancer cells were used. While these berry preparations had better antiproliferation effects on the HCT-116 than the HT-29 cells, the GBPE had significantly stronger inhibitory effects than GBPP. The observed in vitro GBPE's effect could contribute to the actions of its small-molecule non-polysaccharide compounds due to their direct antiproliferative activities. Results obtained from the present study suggest that ginseng berry polysaccharides may have a therapeutic role in the management of high lipid levels, enteric inflammation, and colon malignancies.

BACKGROUND: The ginseng berry has various bioactivities, including antidiabetic, anticancer, antiinflammatory, and antioxidative properties. Moreover, we have revealed that the active antiaging component of the ginseng berry, syringaresinol, has the ability to stimulate longevity via gene activation. Despite the many known beneficial effects of ginseng, its effects on skin aging are poorly understood. In this study, we investigated the effects of ginseng and the ginseng berry on one of the skin aging processes, melanogenesis, and age-related pigment lipofuscin accumulation, to elucidate the mechanism of action with respect to antiaging. METHODS: The human melanoma MNT1 cell line was treated with ginseng root extract, ginseng berry extract, or syringaresinol. Then, the cells were analyzed using a melanin assay, and the tyrosinase activity was estimated. The Caenorhabditis elegans wild type N2 strain was used for the life span assay to analyze the antiaging effects of the samples. A lipofuscin fluorescence assay was performed during 10 passages with the syringaresinol treatment. RESULTS: A 7-d treatment with ginseng berry extract reduced melanin accumulation and tyrosinase activity more than ginseng root extract. These results may be due to the active compound of the ginseng berry, syringaresinol. The antimelanogenic activity was strongly coordinated with the activation of the longevity gene foxo3a. Moreover, the ginseng berry extract had more potent antiaging effects, caused a life span extension, and reduced lipofuscin accumulation. CONCLUSION: Taken together, our results suggest that these antimelanogenic effects and antiaging effects of ginseng berry mediate the activation of antioxidation-FoxO3a signaling.

The high anatomical contrast achieved with the newly emerging MRI tractographic technique of super-resolution track density imaging (TDI) encouraged us to search for a new fiber tract in the septum pellucidum. Although this septum pellucidum tract (SPT) has been observed previously, its connections were unclear due to ambiguity and limited resolution of conventional MRI images. It is now possible to identify detailed parts of SPT with the increased resolution of TDI, which involves diffusion MRI imaging, whole-brain tractography, and voxel subdivision using the track-count information. Four healthy male subjects were included in the study. The experiment was performed with 7.0T MRI, following the guidelines of the institute's institutional review board. Data were processed with the super-resolution TDI technique to generate a tractographic map with 0.18 mm isotropic resolution. The SPT was identified in all subjects. Based on additional seed tracking method with inter-axis correlation search, we have succeeded in identifying a new frontal lobe pathway in the SPT. We hypothesize that the tract is connected as a superior dorsal branch of the fornix that leads to the prefrontal cortex.
