RESUMEN

Quantifying emission factors of ammonia and particulate matter (PM) in livestock production systems is crucial for assessing and mitigating the environmental impact of animal production and for ensuring industry sustainability. This study aimed to determine emission factors of ammonia, total suspended particles (TSPs), PM10, and PM2.5 for piglets and growing-finishing pigs at a commercial pig farm in Korea. It also sought to identify factors influencing these emission factors. The research found that the emission factors measured were generally lower than those currently used in Korea, but were consistent with findings from individual research studies in the literature. Seasonal variations were observed, with ammonia emissions peaking in spring and autumn, and PM emissions rising in summer. Correlation analyses indicated that the number of animals and their average age correlated positively with both ammonia and PM emission factors. Ventilation rate was also positively correlated with PM emissions. Future extended field measurements across diverse pig farms will offer deeper insights into the emission factors of pig farms in Korea, guiding the development of sustainable livestock management practices.

Accurate ventilation control is crucial for maintaining a healthy and productive environment in research-specialized pig facilities. This study aimed to evaluate actual ventilation rates and ventilation efficiency by investigating different inlet and exhaust configurations. The research was conducted in two pig rooms, namely pig room A and pig room B, in the absence of animals and workers to focus solely on evaluating the ventilation system's performance. Actual ventilation rates were measured using hood-type anemometers, and the local air change per hour was analyzed at various measurement points via tracer gas decay experiments. The results demonstrated that specific inlet and exhaust combinations, such as side inlet/chimney outlet and ceiling inlet/side outlet, exhibited higher ventilation rates. However, the measured ventilation rates were much lower than the manufacturer's specifications. The side exhaust fan closer to the pig activity space demonstrated better ventilation effectiveness for the animals than the chimney exhaust fan. Additionally, the ceiling inlet exhibited superior air distribution and uniformity. Lower ventilation rates and higher infiltration ratios resulted in reduced ventilation efficiency, with the difference between pig and worker activity spaces being pronounced. This study emphasizes the importance of selecting optimal inlet and exhaust configurations to achieve efficient ventilation and create a healthy environment for both pigs and workers.

Particulate matter (PM) produced in pig houses may contain microbes which can spread by airborne transmission, and PM and microbes in PM adversely affect human and animal health. To investigate the microbiome in PM from pig houses, nine PM samples were collected in summer 2020 inside and outside of pig houses located in Jangseong-gun, Jeollanam-do Province, Korea, comprising three PM samples from within a nursery pig house (I-NPH), three samples from within a finishing pig house (I-FPH), and three samples from outside of the pig houses (O-PH). Microbiomes were analyzed using 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing. Firmicutes was the most dominant phylum and accounted for 64.8%-97.5% of total sequences in all the samples, followed by Proteobacteria (1.4%-21.8%) and Bacteroidetes (0.3%-13.7%). In total, 31 genera were represented by > 0.3% of all sequences, and only Lactobacillus, Turicibacter, and Aerococcus differed significantly among the three PM sample types. All three genera were more abundant in the I-FPH samples than in the O-PH samples. Alpha diversity indices did not differ significantly among the three PM types, and a principal coordinate analysis suggested that overall microbial communities were similar across PM types. The concentration of PM did not significantly differ among the three PM types, and no significant correlation of PM concentration with the abundance of any potential pathogen was observed. The present study demonstrates that microbial composition in PM inside and outside of pig houses is similar, indicating that most microbe-containing PM inside pig houses leaks to the outside from where it, along with microbe-containing PM on the outside, may re-enter the pig houses. Our results may provide useful insights regarding strategies to mitigate potential risk associated with pig farming PM and pathogens in PM.

A two-dimensional (2D) WOx/ZnO stack reveals a unique carrier transport behavior, which can be utilized as a novel device element to achieve a very high on/off ratio (>106) and an off current density lower than 1 nA cm-2. These unique behaviors are explained by a dynamic band alignment between WOx and ZnO, which can be actively modulated by a gate bias. The performance of FET utilizing the WOx/ZnO stack is comparable to those of other 2D heterojunction devices; however, it has a unique benefit in terms of process integration because of very low temperature process capability (T < 110 °C). The high on/off switching with extremely low off current density utilizing the dynamic band alignment modulation at the WOx/ZnO stack can be a very useful element for future device applications, especially in monolithic 3D integration or flexible electronics.

Single-crystal perovskite thin films were prepared by a scalable, one-step, geometrically confined lateral crystal growth (GC-LCG) method on a patterned rolling mold and used for a photovoltaic study. A record solar cell efficiency of 9.50 % under 0.1 sun with an electrode spacing of 1.5 µm is attained in lateral single-crystal perovskite materials. Moreover, successful integration for high-source-power-generation interdigitated electrode units patterned in series (1×4), parallel (4×1), and combination (4 series×4 parallel) configurations is devised and affords maximum efficiencies of 7.99, 8.19, and 7.96 %, respectively. Additionally, the cell performances under various illumination intensities (0.1, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8, 1.0 sun) to mimic daily sunshine angles and an indoor environment at 1000 lux are elucidated for which short-circuit current (JSC ) values (19.60 mA cm-2 and η=7.43 %) under 1.0 sun and a significant efficiency of 8.13 % under indoor conditions are obtained. This work represents a significant step towards next-generation, efficient, lateral photovoltaics for possible module integration.

The infiltration depth and water vapor transmission rate (WVTR) were explored in a variety of Al2O3-polymer hybrid layers as thin gas barrier films by filling the free volumes of polymers in the subsurface region with Al2O3 using the atomic layer infiltration (ALI) method. Among all, the prepared Al2O3-polyethylene terephthalate (PET), Al2O3-polyimide, and Al2O3-Nylon 6 hybrid thin layers with the infiltration depth in the nanometer ranges showed extremely low WVTR values (<10-6 g m-2 day-1) in a Ca dot corrosion test. Furthermore, we observed selective infiltration among the two polymers [perfluoroalkoxy alkane (PFA) and PET] by a preferential growth of Al2O3 in the PET polymer that might be based on effective functional group anchoring in the ALI process. Then, we demonstrated a novel strategy by employing such a selective infiltration procedure and encapsulating individual segments of 144 Ca dots by Al2O3-PET hybrid thin films on the PFA polymer substrate rather than wrapping the whole thing together for the stretchable gas-encapsulation film. Regardless of stretching, it showed an extremely low WVTR (<10-7 g m-2 day-1) and is proposed as a highly promising hermetic sealing alternative in stretchable, flexible, and foldable electronic display technologies.

A quantum confined transport based on a zinc oxide composite nanolayer that has conducting states with mobility edge quantization is proposed and was applied to develop multi-value logic transistors with stable intermediate states. A composite nanolayer with zinc oxide quantum dots embedded in amorphous zinc oxide domains generated quantized conducting states at the mobility edge, which we refer to as "mobility edge quantization". The unique quantized conducting state effectively restricted the occupied number of carriers due to its low density of states, which enable current saturation. Multi-value logic transistors were realized by applying a hybrid superlattice consisting of zinc oxide composite nanolayers and organic barriers as channels in the transistor. The superlattice channels produced multiple states due to current saturation of the quantized conducting state in the composite nanolayers. Our multi-value transistors exhibited excellent performance characteristics, stable and reliable operation with no current fluctuation, and adjustable multi-level states.

Four novel lysophosphatidylcholine (lysoPC) analogues, (S)-N-stearoyl-O-phosphocholineserine methyl ester [(S)-1a], (R)-1-lyso-2-stearoylamino-2-deoxy-sn-glycero-3-phosphatidylcholine [(R)-2a], (R)-N-stearoyl-O-phosphocholineserine methyl ester [(R)-1b], and (S)-1-lyso-2-stearoylamino-2-deoxy-sn-glycero-3-phosphatidylcholine [(S)-2b], were synthesized starting from serine as a chiral template. These synthetic compounds exhibited greatly enhanced hyphal transition inhibitory activity in Candida as compared to the natural lysoPC.
