RESUMEN

Sodium bicarbonate is used as an ergogenic supplement to enhance people's performances in various exercises. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of intestinal delivery of sodium bicarbonate on bicarbonate absorption and associated side effects in an experimental human trial. After preparing and assessing enteric-coated and uncoated sodium bicarbonate tablet formulations, pharmacokinetic analysis and gastrointestinal symptom tests were performed after oral administration in the human body. The dose required to increase blood bicarbonate concentration over 5 mmol∙L-1 for the purpose of improving performance during high-intensity exercise was also determined. Enteric-coated tablet formulation protects sodium bicarbonate under acidic conditions and releases bicarbonate in the intestine. Enteric-coated tablet formulation also reduced the oral dose required to achieve a blood bicarbonate concentration over 5 mmol∙L-1 from 300 mg∙kg-1 of uncoated tablet formulation to 225 mg∙kg-1. Gastrointestinal discomfort was significantly decreased for the group given 225 mg∙kg-1 enteric-coated tablets compared to that given 300 mg∙kg-1 uncoated tablets. These results suggest that enteric-coated tablet formulation could reduce the oral dose required in order to achieve a blood bicarbonate concentration over 5 mmol∙L-1 by 25%, from 300 mg∙kg-1 to 225 mg∙kg-1, along with its ability to reduce gastrointestinal discomfort associated with the dosage.

RESUMEN

Green fuel from water splitting is hardcore for future generations, and the limited source of fresh water (<1%) is a bottleneck. Seawater cannot be used directly as a feedstock in current electrolyzer techniques. Until now single atom catalysts were reported by many synthetic strategies using notorious chemicals and harsh conditions. A cobalt single-atom (CoSA) intruding cobalt oxide ultrasmall nanoparticle (Co3 O4 USNP)-intercalated porous carbon (PC) (CoSA-Co3 O4 @PC) electrocatalyst was synthesized from the waste orange peel as a single feedstock (solvent/template). The extended X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy (EXAFS) and theoretical fitting reveal a clear picture of the coordination environment of the CoSA sites (CoSA-Co3 O4 and CoSA-N4 in PC). To impede the direct seawater corrosion and chlorine evolution the seawater has been desalinated (Dseawater) with minimal cost and the obtained PC is used as an adsorbent in this process. CoSA-Co3 O4 @PC shows high oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity in transitional metal impurity-free (TMIF) 1 M KOH and alkaline Dseawater. CoSA-Co3 O4 @PC exhibits mass activity that is 15 times higher than the commercial RuO2 . Theoretical interpretations suggest that the optimized CoSA sites in Co3 O4 USNPs reduce the energy barrier for alkaline water dissociation and simultaneously trigger an excellent OER followed by an adsorbate evolution mechanism (AEM).

RESUMEN

NbOx-based Mott memristors exhibit fast threshold switching behaviors, making them suitable for spike generators in neuromorphic computing and stochastic clock generators in security devices. In these applications, a high output spike amplitude is necessary for threshold level control and accurate signal detection. Here, we propose a materialwise solution to obtain the high amplitude spikes by inserting Au nanodots into the NbOx device. The Au nanodots enable increasing the threshold voltage by modulating the oxygen contents at the electrode-oxide interface, providing a higher ON current compared to nanodot-free NbOx devices. Also, the reduction of the local switching region volume decreases the thermal capacitance of the system, allowing the maximum spike amplitude generation. Consequently, the Au nanodot incorporation increases the spike amplitude of the NbOx device by 6 times, without any additional external circuit elements. The results are systematically supported by both a numerical model and a finite-element-method-based multiphysics model.

RESUMEN

Valence change-type resistance switching behaviors in oxides can be understood by well-established physical models describing the field-driven oxygen vacancy distribution change. In those models, electroformed residual oxygen vacancy filaments are crucial as they work as an electric field concentrator and limit the oxygen vacancy movement along the vertical direction. Therefore, their movement outward by diffusion is negligible. However, this situation may not be applicable in the electroforming-free system, where the field-driven movement is less prominent, and the isotropic oxygen vacancy diffusion by concentration gradient is more significant, which has not been given much consideration in the conventional model. Here, we propose a modified physical model that considers the change in the oxygen vacancies' charged state depending on their concentrations and the resulting change in diffusivity during switching to interpret the electroforming-free device behaviors. The model suggests formation of an hourglass-shaped filament constituting a lower concentration of oxygen vacancies due to the fluid oxygen diffusion in the thin oxide. Consequently, the proposed model can explain the electroforming-free device behaviors, including the retention failure mechanism, and suggest an optimized filament configuration for improved retention characteristics. The proposed model can plausibly explain both the electroformed and the electroforming-free devices. Therefore, it can be a standard model for valence change memristors.

RESUMEN

Complex spatial light modulator (SLM), which can simultaneously control the amplitude and phase of light waves, is a key technology for wide-range of wave-optic technologies including holographic three-dimensional displays. This paper presents a flat panel complex spatial light modulator that consists of dual in-plane switching liquid crystal panels with double-degrees of freedom of voltage inputs. The proposed architecture features single-pixel level complex light modulation enabling complex light modulation in entire free space, which is most contrast to conventional macro-pixel based complex modulation techniques. Its complex light modulation capability is verified with theoretical simulation and experimental characterization, and a three-dimensional holographic image reconstruction without conjugate noise. It is believed that the proposed flat panel complex SLM can be an essential device for a wide range of advanced wave optic technologies.

RESUMEN

A memristive stateful neural network allowing complete Boolean in-memory computing attracts high interest in future electronics. Various Boolean logic gates and functions demonstrated so far confirm their practical potential as an emerging computing device. However, spatio-temporal efficiency of the stateful logic is still too limited to replace conventional computing technologies. This study proposes a ternary-state memristor device (simply a ternary memristor) for application to ternary stateful logic. The ternary-state implementable memristor device is developed with bilayered tantalum oxide by precisely controlling the oxygen content in each oxide layer. The device can operate 157 ternary logic gates in one operational clock, which allows an experimental demonstration of a functionally complete three-valued Lukasiewicz logic system. An optimized logic cascading strategy with possible ternary gates is ≈20% more efficient than conventional binary stateful logic, suggesting it can be beneficial for higher performance in-memory computing.

RESUMEN

The intrinsic stochasticity of the memristor can be used to generate true random numbers, essential for non-decryptable hardware-based security devices. Here, we propose a novel and advanced method to generate true random numbers utilizing the stochastic oscillation behavior of a NbOx mott memristor, exhibiting self-clocking, fast and variation tolerant characteristics. The random number generation rate of the device can be at least 40 kb s-1, which is the fastest record compared with previous volatile memristor-based TRNG devices. Also, its dimensionless operating principle provides high tolerance against both ambient temperature variation and device-to-device variation, enabling robust security hardware applicable in harsh environments.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Systemic Clinic Outcome and Routine Evaluation (SCORE-15) is a compact scale that contains the most critical family function assessment tools including assessments of the strengths, adaptability, and communication among family members. It has been translated into other languages in the United States and Europe. This study aimed to verify the reliability and validity of SCORE-15 with a small research population and justify its applicability in Korea. METHODS: SCORE-15 is a self-reporting family function measurement tool for each family member over the age of 11 years. This study used the Family Communication Scale (FCS) included in the Family Adaptability and Cohesion Evaluation Scales (FACES) IV package and FACES in FACES-III to verify the validity of the Korean-translated SCORE-15. Cronbach's α value was calculated to check the reliability of SCORE-15. Data were analyzed using STATA ver. 15.0 (Stata Corp., College Station, TX, USA). RESULTS: The study analyzed the correlation between FACES-III and SCORE-15 and FCS and SCORE-15 so that there was a significant static correlation in both comparisons (r=0.72 and r=0.81, respectively). Also, the research compared each subscale to analyze the correlation and the range was 0.47 to 0.95. The total SCORE-15 Cronbach's α value was 0.92 and those values of the subscales for family strengths, family communication, and family difficulty were 0.89, 0.73, and 0.87, respectively (P<0.001). CONCLUSION: Our study was the first to validate the Korean SCORE-15, which can be used as an appropriate shortform indicator for evaluating family function and changes in detecting therapeutic improvements in Korea.

RESUMEN

The complex modulation characteristics of a light field through an amplitude-phase double-layer spatial light modulator are analyzed based on the wave-optic numerical model, and the structural conditions for the optimal double-layer complex modulation structure are investigated. The relationships of interlayer distance, pixel size, and complex light modulation performance are analyzed. The main finding of this study is that the optimal interlayer distance for the double-layer structure can be found at the Talbot effect condition. For validating the practical usefulness of our findings, a high quality reconstruction of the complex computer-generated holograms and the robustness of the angular tolerance of the complex modulation at the Talbot interlayer distance are numerically demonstrated.

RESUMEN

In this study, inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) was used to determine the concentration of 15 elements (Mg, Al, K, Ca, Cr, Mn, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Rb, Sr, Cd, Ba, and Pb) of sesame seeds. Multivariate analysis was then performed to discriminate the origin of sesame seeds. Korean (48), Chinese (44), and Indian (21) samples were used to develop the calibration model. Another 10 samples were used to validate this model. All elements were significantly different (p<0.05) among the samples from three countries, and all elements were subjected to both principal component analysis (PCA) and discriminant analysis. The concentrations of multi-element showed a trend of clustering according to the origin of samples based on PCA. They showed a discrimination rate of 92.0% in the discriminant analysis. The results demonstrated that a combination of ICP-MS multi-element determination and multivariate analysis could be used to discriminate the sesame seed origin.

RESUMEN

Recently, there has been an increase in the use of several nephrotoxicity biomarkers in preclinical experiments. In addition, it has been indicated that the result may have been influenced by secondary factors, such as sample storage condition or storage period. In this study, we have assessed the variation in urinary nephrotoxicity biomarkers as a result of urine storage conditions and storage period of the urine. Urine was sampled from specific pathogen-free Sprague-Dawley rats (19 weeks old), which were housed individually in hanged stainless steel wire mesh cages. Urine was stored at 20℃, at 4℃, or at -70℃ after sampling. The levels of the biomarkers such as beta-2 microglobulin (B2M), cystatin-C (Cys-C), N-acetyl-ß- D-glucosaminidase (NAG), micro albumin (MA), micro protein (MP) were measured at 6, 24, 48 and 144 hr after sampling. The B2M level was significantly decreased at 6, 24, 48, and 144 hr compared to 0 hr at -70℃ (p < 0.05, p < 0.01, p < 0.05, and p < 0.05, respectively) and 24 and 144 hr at 20℃ (p < 0.01, p < 0.01, respectively). The Cys-C level was significantly decreased at 144 hr compared to 0 hr at 4℃ (p < 0.01), at 20℃ (p < 0.05) and at 70℃ (p < 0.01). MP and MA levels were not different for 144 hr in all storage conditions. Taken together, B2M and Cys-C levels were modulated by storage temperature and period. For the enhancement of test accuracy, it is suggested that strict protocols be established for samples to minimize the effects of the storage conditions on the detected levels of biomarkers.
