RESUMEN

Despite the potential benefits of reducing system costs and improving spectral efficiency, it is challenging to implement cloud radio access network (C-RAN) systems due to the performance degradation caused by finite-capacity fronthaul links and inter-cluster interference signals. This work studies inter-cluster cooperative reception for the uplink of a two-cluster C-RAN system, where two nearby clusters interfere with each other on the uplink access channel. The radio units (RUs) of two clusters forward quantized and compressed version of the uplink received signals to the serving baseband processing units (BBUs) via finite-capacity fronthaul links. The BBUs of the clusters exchange the received fronthaul signals via finite-capacity backhaul links with the purpose of mitigating inter-cluster interference signals. Optimization of conventional cooperation scheme, in which each RU produces a single quantized signal, requires an exhaustive discrete search of exponentially increasing search size with respect to the number of RUs. To resolve this issue, we propose an improved inter-BBU, or inter-cluster, cooperation strategy based on layered compression, where each RU produces two descriptions, of which only one description is forwarded to the neighboring BBU on the backhaul links. We discuss the optimization of the proposed inter-cluster cooperation scheme, and validate the performance gains of the proposed scheme via numerical results.

RESUMEN

In modern implementations of Cloud Radio Access Network (C-RAN), the fronthaul transport network will often be packet-based and it will have a multi-hop architecture built with general-purpose switches using network function virtualization (NFV) and software-defined networking (SDN). This paper studies the joint design of uplink radio and fronthaul transmission strategies for a C-RAN with a packet-based fronthaul network. To make an efficient use of multiple routes that carry fronthaul packets from remote radio heads (RRHs) to cloud, as an alternative to more conventional packet-based multi-route reception or coding, a multiple description coding (MDC) strategy is introduced that operates directly at the level of baseband signals. MDC ensures an improved quality of the signal received at the cloud in conditions of low network congestion, i.e., when more fronthaul packets are received within a tolerated deadline. The advantages of the proposed MDC approach as compared to the traditional path diversity scheme are validated via extensive numerical results.

RESUMEN

The objective of this study is to assess human exposure to phthalates and its associations with demographic characteristics of the subjects in the Korean National Human Biomonitoring Survey. The subjects aged between 18 and 69 were selected through nationwide stratified sampling. A total of 1874 urine samples were collected and stored at -20 °C until measurement for ten selected metabolites of phthalates (MnBP, MiBP, MBzP, MCHP, MnOP, MEHP, MEOHP, MEHHP, MiNP, and MiDP) using high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). The difference in the level of urinary phthalate metabolites by the characteristics of the subjects was tested for statistical significance using SAS Surveyreg procedure. The coefficients and standard errors from multiple linear regressions were exponentiated to estimate the adjusted proportional change (APC) and 95% CIs compared with a referent level. The proportion of data above LOQ was less than 20% for MCHP, MnOP, MiNP, and MiDP. Geometric means of creatinine-adjusted concentrations (unit: µg/g creatinine) of six other phthalate metabolites among Korean adults were 41.7 (95% CI 39.6-43.9) for MnBP, 17.1 (95% CI 16.1-18.1) for MiBP, 15.7 (95% CI 14.4-17.1) for MBzP, 8.65 (95% CI 8.10-9.22) for MEHP, 17.5 (95% CI 16.8-18.3) for MEOHP, and 38.1 (95% CI 36.2-40.2) for MEHHP. Urinary level of phthalates tended to be higher among subjects with older age, females, and those with vigorous daily physical activity and tended to be lower among drinkers and those with higher income. Our results suggest that the level of phthalate exposure is significant among Korean adults and thus warrants further studies to identify major source and route of exposure to phthalates.

RESUMEN

This study aimed to determine if there was an association between the implementation of smoking regulation policies and the urine cotinine concentrations of Korean non-smokers. The subjects of this study were 4612 non-smoking Korean citizens (aged 19 or older) selected from the first stage of the Korean National Environmental Health Survey conducted by the National Institute of Environmental Research from 2009 to 2011. Cotinine concentrations in urine were measured by GC-MS (limit of detection: 0.05 ng/mL). Changes in the urine cotinine concentration were analyzed using a weighted general linear model and linear regression and values were shown as geometric mean (GM). The GM urine cotinine concentration decreased over time (2.92 ng/mL in 2009, 1.93 ng/mL in 2010, and 1.25 ng/mL in 2011). The total decrease in the subjects' urine cotinine concentration between 2009 and 2011 was 2.79 ng/mL, representing a relative decrease of 54.7%. The decrease in GM urine cotinine concentration in each subgroup ranged from 2.17 ng/mL to 3.29 ng/mL (relative decreases of 46.4% and 62.8%, respectively), with the largest absolute reductions in subjects in the following groups: females, aged 40-49 years, detached residence type, no alcohol consumption, employed, secondhand smoke exposure. All groups had negative regression coefficients, all of which were significant (p < 0.001). Our results provide indirect indicators of the effectiveness of smoking regulation policies including the revision of the National Health Promotion Act in Korea.

RESUMEN

Hierarchically mesoporous CuO/carbon nanofiber coaxial shell-core nanowires (CuO/CNF) as anodes for lithium ion batteries were prepared by coating the Cu2(NO3)(OH)3 on the surface of conductive and elastic CNF via electrophoretic deposition (EPD), followed by thermal treatment in air. The CuO shell stacked with nanoparticles grows radially toward the CNF core, which forms hierarchically mesoporous three-dimensional (3D) coaxial shell-core structure with abundant inner spaces in nanoparticle-stacked CuO shell. The CuO shells with abundant inner spaces on the surface of CNF and high conductivity of 1D CNF increase mainly electrochemical rate capability. The CNF core with elasticity plays an important role in strongly suppressing radial volume expansion by inelastic CuO shell by offering the buffering effect. The CuO/CNF nanowires deliver an initial capacity of 1150 mAh g(-1) at 100 mA g(-1) and maintain a high reversible capacity of 772 mAh g(-1) without showing obvious decay after 50 cycles.

RESUMEN

High temperature and pressure are generally required to produce biodiesel using supercritical methanol. We reduced the harsh reaction conditions by means of sonicating the reaction mixture prior to transesterification using supercritical methanol. Soybean oil was selected as the raw material for transesterification. As soybean oil contains more unsaturated fatty acid triglycerides, the biodiesel degraded more at high temperature. The reactants were sonicated for 60 min at 35 °C prior to transesterification to avoid degradation of the product and to enhance biodiesel yield at temperatures <300 °C. The process parameters were optimized using central composite design. The variables selected for optimization were temperature, time, and the oil to methanol molar ratio. The temperature and oil to methanol molar ratios were varied from 250 to 280 °C and 1:40-1:50, respectively. The reaction time was tested between 4 and 12 min. The biodiesel was analyzed for any possible degradation by gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy and for the wt% of fatty acid methyl esters (FAME) obtained. The maximum FAME yield (84.2 wt%) was obtained at a temperature of 265.7 °C, an oil to alcohol molar ratio of 1:44.7, and a time of 8.8 min. The optimum yield was obtained at a pressure of 1,500 psi. The pressure and optimum temperature used to obtain the maximum yield were the lowest reported so far without the use of a co-solvent. Thus, the severity of the supercritical reactions was reduced by adding sonication prior to the reaction.

RESUMEN

Levodopa or L-3,4-dihydroxyphenylalanine (L-DOPA) is the precursor of the neurotransmitter dopamine. L-DOPA is a famous treatment for Parkinson's disease symptoms. In this study, electroenzymatic synthesis of L-DOPA was performed in a three-electrode cell, comprising a Ag/AgCl reference electrode, a platinum wire auxiliary electrode, and a glassy carbon working electrode. L-DOPA had an oxidation peak at 376 mV and a reduction peak at -550 mV. The optimum conditions of pH, temperature, and amount of free tyrosinase enzyme were pH 7, 30 degrees C, and 250 IU, respectively. The kinetic constant of the free tyrosinase enzyme was found for both cresolase and catacholase activity to be 0.25 and 0.4 mM, respectively. A cyclic voltammogram was used to investigate the electron transfer rate constant. The mean heterogeneous electron transfer rate (ke) was 5.8 × 10(-4) cm/s. The results suggest that the electroenzymatic method could be an alternative way to produce L-DOPA without the use of a reducing agent such as ascorbic acid.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Recently, there have been several nationwide episodes involving imported toys contaminated with toxic metals and environmental hormones. In addition, cadmium intoxication has occurred due to soil contamination with cadmium from abandoned metal mines. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the distribution, extent and factors influencing the levels of toxic metals in the blood or urine of the Korean general population over twenty years of age, we studied the blood or urine concentrations of heavy metals in a representative sample of 5087 Koreans in 2008. METHODS: Multiple biological substrates were collected from each participant to determine the most suitable samples for an environmental health survey system. Information regarding exposure conditions of all subjects was collected by questionnaire-based interviews. RESULTS: The geometric means of the blood lead, mercury and manganese levels were 19.1, 3.23 and 10.8 µg/L, respectively. The geometric means of urinary arsenic and cadmium concentrations were 43.5 and 0.65 µg/L, respectively. Blood mercury and urinary arsenic levels in the Korean general population were significantly higher than in European and American populations. CONCLUSIONS: The higher levels of blood mercury and urinary arsenic could be explained by the greater seafood consumption among the Korean population. This biomonitoring study of blood or urine heavy metals in the Korean general population provides important reference data stratified by demographic and lifestyle factors that will be useful for the ongoing surveillance of environmental exposure of Koreans to toxic metals.

RESUMEN

In this study, pilot-scale experiments for the removal of nitrogen from sewage obtained from a county Y sewer system were performed using modified A(2)O processes. Using this approach, the total amount of nitrogen discharged during denitrification of the influent was average 38.6 mg/L and a level of average 10.8 mg/L was maintained throughout the denitrification process, which resulted in an average removal efficiency that was greater than 72%. The nitrogen components in the effluent water consisted of 22% ammonia nitrogen, 6% nitrite nitrogen and 72% nitrate nitrogen, reaching a nitrification efficiency of 94%. In conclusion, since these advanced treatment methods, which involve modified A(2)O processes, were successfully employed to remove nitrogen from sewage discharge, they hold promise for wide spread use by treatment plants.

RESUMEN

Hydrogels are materials with the ability to swell in water through the retention of significant fractions of water within their structures. Owing to their relatively high degree of biocompatibility, hydrogels have been utilized in a host of biomedical applications. In an attempt to determine the optimum conditions for hydrogel synthesis by the free-radical polymerization of sorbitan methacrylate (SMA), the hydrogel used in this study was well polymerized under the following conditions: 50% (w/v) SMA as monomer, 1% (w/w) alpha, alpha'-azo-bis(isobutyro-nitrile) as thermal initiator, and 1% (w/w) ethylene glycol dimethacrylate as cross-liking agent. Under these conditions, the moisture content of the polymerized SMA hydrogel was higher than in the other conditions. Moreover, the moisture content of the poly(SMA) hydrogel was also found to be higher than that of the poly(methyl methacrylate [MMA]) hydrogel. When the Fourier transform-infrared spectrum of poly(SMA) hydrogel was compared with that of poly(MMA) hydrogel, we noted a band at 1735-1730/cm, which did not appear in the Fourier transform-infrared spectrum of poly(MMA). The surface of the poly(SMA) hydrogel was visualized through scanning electron microscopy, and was uniform and clear in appearance.
