RESUMEN

A corona discharge treatment (CDT) is utilized to maximize the performance of triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) by injecting extra electrons into the negative tribomaterials. Increased performance of CDT TENGs, however, exhibits rapid degradation due to the electron dissipation by air moisture or thermal emission. To overcome such drawbacks and circumvent such dissipation, the source of charges should be replaced with ionic charges. This study reports a Ag nanowires (NWs)-embedded laminating structure (AeLS) with a unique fabrication procedure for ionic charge injection by CDT. The injection of ions is achieved by interlayer-CDT (i-CDT), in which positive charges are dissipated by Ag NWs, and the opposite negative ions can remain on the outmost surface. The AeLS TENGs with i-CDT exhibit high performance, long-term stability, and durability. It shows voltage, current, and maximum power outputs of 380 V, 15 µA, and 827 mW m-2 , respectively. As a practical demonstration, rotational TENG integrated with a direct discharge system is realized, and its current and voltage reach 7.4 mA and 7800 V, respectively. This work can pave the way for the design of ion-based TENGs with high performance and long-lasting retention of triboelectric charges.

RESUMEN

Lyn, a tyrosine kinase that is activated by double-stranded DNAdamaging agents, is involved in various signaling pathways, such as proliferation, apoptosis, and DNA repair. Ribosomal protein S3 (RpS3) is involved in protein biosynthesis as a component of the ribosome complex and possesses endonuclease activity to repair damaged DNA. Herein, we demonstrated that rpS3 and Lyn interact with each other, and the phosphorylation of rpS3 by Lyn, causing ribosome heterogeneity, upregulates the translation of p-glycoprotein, which is a gene product of multidrug resistance gene 1. In addition, we found that two different regions of the rpS3 protein are associated with the SH1 and SH3 domains of Lyn. An in vitro immunocomplex kinase assay indicated that the rpS3 protein acts as a substrate for Lyn, which phosphorylates the Y167 residue of rpS3. Furthermore, by adding various kinase inhibitors, we confirmed that the phosphorylation status of rpS3 was regulated by both Lyn and doxorubicin, and the phosphorylation of rpS3 by Lyn increased drug resistance in cells by upregulating p-glycoprotein translation. RESUMEN

The reversibly stable formation and rupture processes of electrical percolative pathways in organic and inorganic insulating materials are essential prerequisites for operating non-volatile resistive memory devices. However, such resistive switching has not yet been reported for dynamically cross-linked polymers capable of intrinsic stretchability and self-healing. This is attributable to the uncontrollable interplay between the conducting filler and the polymer. Herein, we present the development of the self-healing, stretchable, and reconfigurable resistive random-access memory. The device was fabricated via the self-assembly of a silver-gradient nanocomposite bilayer which is capable of easily forming the metal-insulator-metal structure. To realize stable resistive switching in dynamic molecular networks, our device features the following properties: i) self-reconstruction of nanoscale conducting fillers in dynamic hydrogen bonding for self-healing and reconfiguration and ii) stronger interaction among the conducting fillers than with polymers for the formation of robust percolation paths. Based on these unique features, we successfully demonstrated stable data storage of cardiac signals, damage-reliable memory triggering system using a triboelectric energy-harvesting device, and touch sensing via pressure-induced resistive switching.

RESUMEN

Ribosomal protein S3 (rpS3), a member of 40S small ribosomal subunit, is a multifunctional protein with various extra-ribosomal functions including DNA repair endonuclease activity and is secreted from cancer cells. Therefore, antibodies with high specificity against rpS3 protein could be useful cancer biomarkers. In this study, polyclonal antibody (pAb) and monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) were raised against rpS3 protein and epitope mapping was performed for each antibody; the amino acid residues of rpS3 were scanned from amino acid 185 to 243 through peptide scanning to reveal the epitopes of each mAb. Results showed that pAb R2 has an epitope from amino acid 203 to 230, mAb M7 has an epitope from amino acid 213 to 221, and mAb M8 has an epitope from amino acid 197 to 219. Taken together, novel mAbs and pAb against rpS3 were raised and mapped against rpS3 with different specific epitopes.

RESUMEN

DNA double-strand breaks (DSBs) are one of the most serious types of DNA damage. However, multiple repair pathways are present in cells to ensure rapid and appropriate repair of DSBs. Pathway selection depends on several factors including cell type, cell cycle phase, and damage severity. Ribosomal protein S3 (rpS3), a component of the 40S small ribosomal subunit, is a multi-functional protein primarily involved in protein synthesis. rpS3 is also involved in the mediation of various extra-ribosomal pathways, including DNA damage processing and the stress response. Here, we report that rpS3 is a novel negative regulator of non-homologous end joining (NHEJ)-mediated repair of DSBs. We found that rpS3 interacts with the Ku heterodimers of the DNA-dependent protein kinase (DNA-PK) complex and slows down NHEJ ligation reactions, ultimately triggering p53-dependent cell death following treatment with high-dose ionizing radiation. After DSB formation, DNA-PK phosphorylates rpS3, which consequently reduces the binding of rpS3 to the Ku complex. We hypothesized that rpS3 may play a role in DSB repair by repressing NHEJ, while inducing other repair pathways, and by initiating DSB-induced cell death in response to severe DNA damage.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: The low rate of recurrent appendicitis after initial nonsurgical management of complicated appendicitis supports the recently implemented strategy of omitting routine interval appendectomy. However, several reports have suggested an increased incidence rate of neoplasms in these patients. We aimed to identify the risk of neoplasms in the population undergoing interval appendectomy. METHODS: This study retrospectively analyzed consecutive cases of appendicitis that were treated surgically between January 2014 and December 2018 at a single tertiary referral center. Patients were divided into 2 groups depending on whether they underwent immediate or interval appendectomy. Demographics and perioperative clinical and pathologic parameters were analyzed. RESULTS: All 2,013 adults included in the study underwent surgical treatment because of an initial diagnosis of acute appendicitis. Of these, 5.5% (111 of 2,013) underwent interval appendectomy. Appendiceal neoplasm was identified on pathologic analysis in 36 cases (1.8%). The incidence of neoplasm in the interval group was 12.6% (14 of 111), which was significantly higher than that of the immediate group (1.2% [22 of 1,902], P < 0.001). CONCLUSION: The incidence rate of neoplasms was significantly higher in patients undergoing interval appendectomy. These findings should be considered when choosing treatment options after successful nonsurgical management of complicated appendicitis.

RESUMEN

Many studies have shown that organizational justice (OJ) is related to psychological determinants of employees' physical and mental health in the workplace, and these health outcomes also lead to the psychological well-being (PW) of employees. Additionally, physical activity is one of the most important issues related to health in the workplace. This study compared the level of perceived OJ according to sociodemographic and lifestyle factors and examined the association between OJ and PW by regular exercise (hours per week) in Korean employees. This study used cross-sectional data obtained from 494 subjects in South Korea. Self-administered questionnaires comprising OJ, PW, and lifestyle factors (e.g., smoking, drinking, sleeping, and exercise) were completed by employees in April 2017. Multiple logistic regression analyses were conducted to estimate the association of procedural justice (PJ) and interactional justice (IJ) with the prevalence odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals of the high risk to PW. After the adjustment of sociodemographic characteristics and lifestyle factors, the main effects of PJ and IJ on the high risk to PW were significantly observed, and when these values were stratified by a regular exercise category, the lowest odds ratio was observed in a group that exercised for 1-2 h (hours per week). Organizations must encourage trust and consideration between employees and supervisors and carry out efforts to improve their environment, such as making the decision-making process fairer and encouraging employees to exercise regularly. This intervention may help prevent a high risk to PW.

RESUMEN

Translation is a costly, but inevitable, cell maintenance process. To reduce unnecessary ATP consumption in cells, a fine-tuning mechanism is needed for both ribosome biogenesis and translation. Previous studies have suggested that the ribosome functions as a hub for many cellular signals such as ribotoxic stress response, mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR), and ribosomal S6 kinase (RSK) signaling. Therefore, we investigated the relationship between ribosomes and mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) activation under ribotoxic stress conditions and found that the activation of c-Jun N-terminal kinases (JNKs) was suppressed by ribosomal protein knockdown but that of p38 was not. In addition, we found that JNK activation is driven by the association of inactive JNK in the 80S monosomes rather than the polysomes. Overall, these data suggest that the activation of JNKs by ribotoxic stress is attributable to 80S monosomes. These 80S monosomes are active ribosomes that are ready to initiate protein translation, rather than polysomes that are already acting ribosomes involved in translation elongation. RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Many studies show that organizational justice (OJ) is related to psychological determinants of employee health. To prevent health problems related to OJ in Korean workplaces and to accurately measure OJ, we developed the Korean version of the Organizational Justice Questionnaire (K-OJQ) and assessed its validity and reliability. METHODS: A questionnaire draft of the K-OJQ was developed using back-translation methods, which was preliminary tested by 32 employees in Korea. Feedback was received and the K-OJQ was finalized. This study used data from 303 workers (172 males, 131 females) in Korea using the K-OJQ, job stress, and lifestyle questionnaires. RESULTS: Cronbach's α coefficients of the internal consistency reliability was 0.92 for procedural justice and 0.94 for interactional justice. Factor analyses using SPSS 24 and Amos 23 extracted two expected factors, named procedural justice (7 items; range, 1.0-5.0) and interactional justice (6 items; range, 1.0-5.0) and showed a reliable fit (χ2 = 182; p = .000; GFI = .912; AGFI = .877; CFI = .965; RMSEA = .077). Furthermore, higher procedural justice and interactional justice levels were correlated with lower job demand (- 0.33; - 0.36), insufficient job control (- 0.36; - 0.41), interpersonal conflict (- 0.45; - 0.51), job insecurity (- 0.33; - 0.34), organizational system (- 0.64; - 0.64), and lack of reward (- 0.55; - 0.63). CONCLUSIONS: The K-OJQ was objectively validated through statistical methods.

RESUMEN

Single phase nanoparticles (NPs) of CeO2, Ce0.5Zr0.5O2, Ce0.5Hf0.5O2 and Ce0.5Hf0.25Zr0.25O2 were successfully synthesized by co-precipitation method at constant pH and temperature. The X-ray diffraction results revealed that the additive atoms did not segregate to form secondary phases but led to grain size variation in the NPs. The 10 Dq values in the near edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectra at the O K-edge did not vary in the same way as the average grain size was changed for the doped CeO2 NPs. The deconvolution of Ce M5-edge and detailed analysis of O K pre-edge peak have shown the higher Ce(+3)/(Ce(+3) + Ce(+4)) ratio in the Zr- and Hf-doped samples. The local atomic structure around the Ce, Zr and Hf atoms was investigated using extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy at Ce K-edge, Zr K-edge and Hf L3-edge, respectively, and the EXAFS data were fitted with the theoretical calculations. The 4f occupancy, Ce(+3)/(Ce(+3) + Ce(+4)) ratio of Ce ions, coordination number of Ce and Ce-Ce/Ce-O bond distances were sensitive to the additive atoms but not explicitly changed according to the grain size variation in the NPs.

RESUMEN

TiO2 thin film prepared by the atomic layer deposition (ALD) with supplies of Ti(O-i-Pr)4 and H2O have been analyzed using the difference X-ray reflectivity (DXRR). The thickness of buried interfacial layer (IL) embedded in between Si-substrate and TiO2 layer was characterized as a function of temperatures of 20, 300, and 500 degrees C mounted on an in-situ hot stage The growth rate of TiO2 film was estimated to be 0.5 nm/cycle at the temperature of 150 degrees C. It was identified that the interfacial layer of the treated thin film was disappeared at a certain temperature rise. Furthermore, we found that the crystalline structure of TiO2 film was varied depending on not only the growth temperature but also the post thermal treatment of the samples. Since the synchrotron radiation X-ray scattering measurement allow us to investigate the atomic structure evolution in the range of a few nanometer thick, nondestructively, in this letter we report its characteristics of the thermal evolution of the TiO2 interfacial layer that is the crucial step for progress in microelectronics and nanotechnology.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: Early pubertal timing in girls is associated with psychological and behavioral problems. This study aimed to evaluate the psychological features of girls who perceived breast development beginning by analyzing their depression levels and self-concept. METHODS: From March 2007 to December 2012, 93 girls were enrolled and assigned to a pre-8 (younger than 8 years, n=43) or post-8 (8 years and older, n=50) group according to the age at onset of perceived breast development, and their height, body weight, body mass index, bone age (BA), Tanner stage, and luteinizing hormone and follicle-stimulating hormone levels were examined. We investigated their psychological state with the Korean Children's Depression Inventory (CDI) and Piers-Harris Children's Self-Concept Scale (PHCSC) to evaluate depression levels and self-concept, respectively. RESULTS: The pre-8 group had a significantly greater height standard deviation score, (0.5±1.01 vs. 0.11±0.86, P = 0.048) and more advanced BA (2.07±1.02 years vs. 1.40±0.98 years, P = 0.004) compared to the post-8 group. There were no statistically significant intergroup differences for the CDI and PHCSC scores; however, the pre-8 group scored higher than the post-8 group in the physical appearance and attributes domain of the PHCSC (9.93±2.57 vs. 8.52±3.03, P = 0.017). CONCLUSION: The timing of perceived breast development among girls who thought puberty to begin did not affect depression levels and self-concept. There was no correlation between Tanner stage and depression levels and self-concept despite the perception of pubertal onset. The pre-8 group had a more positive view of their physical appearance than the post-8 group.

RESUMEN

A hybrid-fiber nanogenerator comprising a ZnO nanowire array, PVDF polymer and two electrodes is presented. Depending on the bending or spreading action of the human arm, at an angle of ∼90°, the hybrid fiber reaches electrical outputs of ∼0.1 V and ∼10 nA cm(-2) . The unique structure of the hybrid fiber may inspire future research in wearable energy-harvesting technology.

RESUMEN

We report an atomic layer deposition chamber for in-situ synchrotron X-ray scattering study of thin film growth. The chamber was designed for combined synchrotron X-ray reflectivity and two-dimensional grazing-incidence X-ray diffraction measurement to do a in-situ monitoring of ALD growth. We demonstrate ruthenium thermal ALD growth for the performance of the chamber. 10, 20, 30, 50, 70, 100, 150 and 250-cycled states are measured by X-ray scattering methods during ALD growth process. Growth rate is calculated from thickness values and the surface roughness of each state is estimated by X-ray reflectivity analysis. The crystal structure of initial growth state is observed by Grazing-incidence X-ray diffraction. These results indicate that in-situ X-ray scattering method is a promising analysis technique to investigate the initial physical morphology of ALD films.

RESUMEN

Phagocytosis of apoptotic cells is critical to resolution of inflammation. High mobility group box 1 protein (HMGB1), a mediator of inflammation, has been shown to diminish phagocytosis through binding to phosphatidylserine (PS) exposed on the surface of apoptotic neutrophils. However, it is currently unknown whether HMGB1 also modulates the activity of receptors involved in PS recognition on the surface of phagocytes. In the present studies, we found that preincubation of macrophages with HMGB1 decreased their ability to engulf apoptotic neutrophils or thymocytes. Preincubation of macrophages with HMGB1 prevented the enhancement of efferocytosis resulting from exposure to milk fat globule EGF factor 8 (MFG-E8), an opsonin that bridges PS and α(v)ß(3) as well as α(v)ß(5)-integrins on the surface of phagocytes. The inhibitory effect of HMGB1 on the phagocytic activity of macrophages was prevented by preincubation of HMGB1 with soluble α(v)ß(3), but not with soluble α(v)ß(5). HMGB1 colocalized with the ß(3)-integrin on the cell membrane of macrophages and bound to soluble α(v)ß(3), but not to soluble α(v)ß(5). HMGB1 suppressed the interaction between MFG-E8 and α(v)ß(3). HMGB1 also inhibited intracellular signaling events, including ERK phosphorylation and Rac-1 activation, which are activated in macrophages during phagocytosis of apoptotic cells. These results demonstrate that HMGB1 blocks α(v)ß(3)-dependent recognition and uptake of apoptotic cells.

RESUMEN

In this paper, we report a linear polarization-discriminatory state inverter made of three-layer sculpture thin film fabricated by oblique angle deposition technique. The first and third layers are quarter-wave plates of zigzag structure and the middle of them is a circular Bragg reflector of left-handed helical structure. It is found that the normal incidence of P-polarized light on this polarization-discriminatory state inverter becomes the S-polarized light at output, while the incident S-polarized light of wavelength lying in the Bragg regime is reflected. The microstructure of the linear polarization-discriminatory state inverter is also investigated by using a scanning electron microscope.

RESUMEN

Wafer-scale arrays of well-ordered Pb(Zr(0.2)Ti(0.8))O3 nanodiscs and nanorings were fabricated on the entire area (10 mm x 10 mm) of the SrRuO3 bottom electrode on an SrTiO3 single-crystal substrate using the laser interference lithography (LIL) process combined with pulsed laser deposition. The shape and size of the nanostructures were controlled by the amount of PZT deposited through the patterned holes and the temperature of the post-crystallization steps. X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy confirmed that (001)-oriented PZT nanostructures were grown epitaxially on the SrRuO3(001) bottom electrode layer covering the (001)-oriented single-crystal substrate. The domain structures of PZT nano-islands were characterized by reciprocal space mapping using synchrotron x-ray radiation. Ferroelectric properties of each PZT nanostructure were characterized by scanning force microscopy in the piezoresponse mode.

RESUMEN

We demonstrate a wideband circular polarization reflector fabricated as cascades of helical films with different pitch thickness by using glancing angle deposition (GLAD) technique. The full-width-at-half-maximum bandwidth of this reflector is measured from the reflectance spectra and is found about 200 nm indicating the feasibility of wideband reflector. A helical TiO(2) film with three sections, each of different pitch thickness, is also studied. It shows three Bragg peaks at different wavelengths. To select appropriate material for this circular reflector, the optical properties of 5-turns TiO(2), ZrO(2), and Ta2O(5) helical films and the porosity effect on the TiO(2) helical film are investigated.
