RESUMEN

Gallium Phosphide (GaP) has a band gap of 2.26 eV and a valance band edge that is more negative than the water oxidation level. Hence, it may be a promising material for photoelectrochemical water splitting. However, one thing GaP has in common with other III-V semiconductors is that it corrodes in photoelectrochemical reactions. Cobalt oxide (CoOx) is a chemically stable and highly active oxygen evolution reaction co-catalyst. In this study, we protected a GaP photoanode by using a 20 nm TiO2 as a protection layer and a 2 nm cobalt oxide co-catalyst layer, which were both deposited via atomic layer deposition (ALD). A GaP photoanode that was modified by CoOx exhibited much higher photocurrent, potential, and photon-to-current efficiency than a bare GaP photoanode under AM1.5G illumination. A photoanode that was coated with both TiO2 and CoOx layers was stable for over 24 h during constant reaction in 1 M NaOH (pH 13.7) solution under one sun illumination.

The synthesis of lead sulfide nanocrystals within a solution processable sulfur 'inverse vulcanization' polymer thin film matrix was achieved from the in situ thermal decomposition of lead(II) n-octylxanthate, [Pb(S2COOct)2]. The growth of nanocrystals within polymer thin films from single-source precursors offers a faster route to networks of nanocrystals within polymers when compared with ex situ routes. The 'inverse vulcanization' sulfur polymer described herein contains a hybrid linker system which demonstrates high solubility in organic solvents, allowing solution processing of the sulfur-based polymer, ideal for the formation of thin films. The process of nanocrystal synthesis within sulfur films was optimized by observing nanocrystal formation by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. Examination of the film morphology by scanning electron microscopy showed that beyond a certain precursor concentration the nanocrystals formed were not only within the film but also on the surface suggesting a loading limit within the polymer. We envisage this material could be used as the basis of a new generation of materials where solution processed sulfur polymers act as an alternative to traditional polymers.

RESUMEN

The Anatomical Society's core syllabus for anatomy (2003 and later refined in 2007) set out a series of learning outcomes that an individual medical student should achieve on graduation. The core syllabus, with 182 learning outcomes grouped in body regions, referenced in the General Medical Council's Teaching Tomorrow's Doctors, was open to criticism on the grounds that the learning outcomes were generated by a relatively small group of anatomists, albeit some of whom were clinically qualified. We have therefore used a modified Delphi technique to seek a wider consensus. A Delphi panel was constructed involving 'experts' (n = 39). The revised core syllabus of 156 learning outcomes presented here is applicable to all medical programmes and may be used by curriculum planners, teachers and students alike in addressing the perennial question: 'What do I need to know ?'

OBJECTIVES: International guidelines exist for chest drain insertion and recommend identifying the fifth intercostal space or above, around the midaxillary line. In a recent study, applying these guidelines in cadavers risked insertion in the 6th intercostal space or below in 80% of cases. However, there are limitations of cadaveric studies and this investigation uses ultrasound to determine the intercostal space identified when applying these guidelines in healthy adult volunteers. METHODS: On each side of the chest wall in 31 volunteers, the position for drain insertion was identified using the European Trauma Course method, Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) method, British Thoracic Society's 'safe triangle' and the 'traditional' method of palpation. Ultrasound imaging was used to determine the relationship of the skin marks with the underlying intercostal spaces. RESULTS: Five methods were assessed on 60 sides. In contrast to the cadaveric study, 94% of skin marks lay over a safe intercostal space. However, the range of intercostal spaces found spanned the second to the seventh space. In 44% of women, the inferior boundary of the 'safe triangle' and the ATLS guidelines located the sixth intercostal space or below. CONCLUSIONS: Current guidelines often identify a safe site for chest drain insertion, although the same site is not reproducibly found. In addition, women appear to be at risk of subdiaphragmatic drain insertion when the nipple is used to identify the fifth intercostal space. Real-time ultrasonography can be used to confirm the intercostal space during this procedure, although a safe guideline is still needed for circumstances in which ultrasound is not possible.

Monoclinic VO2 nanoparticles are of interest due to the material's thermochromic properties, however, direct synthesis routes to VO2 nanoparticles are often inaccessible due to the high synthesis temperatures or long reaction times required. Herein, we present a two-step synthesis route for the preparation of monoclinic VO2 nanoparticles using Continuous Hydrothermal Flow Synthesis (CHFS) followed by a short post heat treatment step. A range of particle sizes, dependent on synthesis conditions, were produced from 50 to 200 nm by varying reaction temperatures and the residence times in the process. The nanoparticles were characterised by powder X-ray diffraction, Raman and UV/Vis spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The nanoparticles were highly crystalline with rod and sphere-like morphologies present in TEM micrographs, with the size of both the rod and spherical particles being highly dependent on both reaction temperature and residence time. SEM micrographs showed the surface of the powders produced from the CHFS process to be highly uniform. The samples were given a short post synthesis heat treatment to ensure that they were phase pure monoclinic VO2, which led to them exhibiting a large and reversible switch in optical properties (at near-IR wavelengths), which suggests that if such materials can be incorporated into coatings or in composites, they could be used for fenestration in architectural applications.

OBJECTIVES: Guidelines to improve the ease and safety of chest drain insertion recommend using the fifth intercostal space, around the midaxillary line (MAL). This study aimed to assess whether compliance with published guidelines reliably ensured such placement and avoided the potentially serious complications of subdiaphragmatic insertion and peripheral nerve injury. METHODS: Three international guidelines were assessed by identifying the intercostal space for chest drain insertion using 16 cadavers (32 sides) at a point 1 cm anterior to MAL. The European Trauma Course method was compared with the British Thoracic Society's 'safe triangle' and the ATLS course technique. RESULTS: The level most commonly found was the sixth intercostal space (43%; 41 of 96 sides). Overall the sixth space or below was found in 83% of insertions (80 of 96 sides). In the fifth intercostal space, the long thoracic nerve ran posterior to the marker placed in all cases and the lateral cutaneous branches of intercostal nerves arose anteriorly to the marker in all but one case. CONCLUSIONS: The results suggest these guidelines may result in insertion of chest drains below the fifth intercostal space, potentially risking injury to subdiaphragmatic structures. Peripheral nerves of the lateral thoracic wall appear safe from incisions 1 cm anterior to MAL.

A total of 88 new Arabidopsis lines with trichome variation were recovered by screening 49,200 single-seed descent T3 lines from the SK activation-tagged population and from a new 20,000-line T-DNA insertion population (called pAG). Trichome variant lines were classified into 12 distinct phenotype categories. Single or multiple T-DNA insertion sites were identified for 89% of these mutant lines. Alleles of the well-known trichome genes TRY, GL2 and TTG1 were recovered with atypical phenotype variation not reported previously. Moreover, atypical gene expression profiles were documented for two additional mutants specifying TRY and GL2 disruptions. In remaining mutants, ten lines were disrupted in genes coding for proteins not implicated in trichome development, five were disrupted in hypothetical proteins and 11 were disrupted in proteins with unknown function. The collection represents new opportunities for the plant biology community to define trichome development more precisely and to refine the function of individual trichome genes.

We describe the synthesis of charge-stabilised gold and silver nanoparticles by a modified Turkevich method and their interaction with a selection of cationic and anionic dyes. It was found that gold nanoparticles interact strongly with cationic dyes and in some cases enhanced absorption was observed by UV-visible spectroscopy. It is also shown that addition of cationic dyes to gold nanoparticles triggers aggregation of the nanoparticles into large, micrometre-scale clusters. Simultaneous fragmentation and agglomeration of the gold nanoparticles was observed at high concentrations of cationic dye in the solution. These effects were not observed when gold nanoparticles were mixed with anionic dyes, nor for silver nanoparticles with either cationic or anionic dyes.

This article reports on the magnetic properties of interacting uncoated nickel ferrite (NiFe2O4) nanoparticles synthesized through an aerosol levitation-jet technique. A comprehensive set of samples with different compositions of background gas and metal precursors, as well as applied electric field intensities, has been studied. Nanoparticles prepared under a field of 210 kV m(-1) show moderately high-field irreversibility and shifted hysteresis loops after field-cooling, also exhibiting a joint temperature decrease of the exchange field and coercivity. The appearance of memory effects has been checked using the genuine ZFC protocol and the observed behavior cannot be fully explained in terms of thermal relaxation. Although dipolar interactions prevail, exchange interactions occur to a certain extent within a narrow range of applied fields. The origin of the slow dynamics in the system is found to be given by the interplay of the distribution of energy barriers due to size dispersion and the cooperative dynamics associated with frustrated interactions.

PURPOSE: The anatomy of the radial recurrent artery (RRA) is important for different clinical procedures: interventional cardiology and microsurgery of the forearm; however, few studies have analysed its morphology: number, course, relations and distribution. METHODS: The RRA was analysed in 332 upper limbs divided into two groups: (1) normal pattern of the arterial axis of the upper limb (266 cases), (2) associated with major arterial variations (66 cases). RESULTS: A second or accessory RRA existed in 31.2 % in group 1, and 30.3 % in group 2. In both groups, the second RRA originated from the brachial (100 %) and always (100 %) coursed behind the bicipital tendon. The accessory RRA supplied the brachioradialis, brachialis and biceps brachii muscles. The RRA in group 1, originated mostly from the radial artery (75 %), followed by radioulnar division and ulno-interosseous trunk. In group 2, the RRA arise from the brachioradial artery (65 %), or from the radial artery (in cases of ulnar or brachial artery variation). The course of the RRA behind the biceps brachii tendon was observed in 9.4 % of group 1 and in 6.1 % of group 2. The RRA supplied the brachioradialis, extensor carpi radialis longus and brevis, and supinator muscles. The RRA and accessory RRA anastomosed forming a ring around the biceps brachii tendon in 0.75 % in group 1 and in 13.6 % in group 2, the latter group having an important clinical interest. CONCLUSIONS: The variability of the RRA may provide an advantage for microsurgical procedures of the elbow and disadvantage during transradial catheterism.

LepR3, found in the Brassica napus cv 'Surpass 400', provides race-specific resistance to the fungal pathogen Leptosphaeria maculans, which was overcome after great devastation in Australia in 2004. We investigated the LepR3 locus to identify the genetic basis of this resistance interaction. We employed a map-based cloning strategy, exploiting collinearity with the Arabidopsis thaliana and Brassica rapa genomes to enrich the map and locate a candidate gene. We also investigated the interaction of LepR3 with the L. maculans avirulence gene AvrLm1 using transgenics. LepR3 was found to encode a receptor-like protein (RLP). We also demonstrated that avirulence towards LepR3 is conferred by AvrLm1, which is responsible for both the Rlm1 and LepR3-dependent resistance responses in B. napus. LepR3 is the first functional B. napus disease resistance gene to be cloned. AvrLm1's interaction with two independent resistance loci, Rlm1 and LepR3, highlights the need to consider redundant phenotypes in 'gene-for-gene' interactions and offers an explanation as to why LepR3 was overcome so rapidly in parts of Australia.

One restriction to the cultivation of common bean, Phaseolus vulgaris L., is its limited tolerance to low temperatures. In the present study, subtraction suppression hybridization was employed to enrich for stress responsive genes in both a chilling-susceptible common bean and a relatively more chilling-tolerant wild bean species, Phaseolus angustissimus. For each species, approximately 11 000 expressed sequence tags were generated. Comparative sequence analysis of the EST collection with the available annotated genome sequences of the model Fabaceae species Medicago truncatula and Glycine max identified protein homologues for approximately 65% and 80% of the Phaseolus sequences, respectively. This difference reflects the closer phylogenetic relationship between the genera Phaseolus and Glycine compared with Medicago. Annotation of the Phaseolus sequences was facilitated through this comparative analysis and indicated that several heat shock proteins, cytochrome P450s, and DNA binding factors were uniquely found among the sequences from the wild species P. angustissimus. The Phaseolus sequences have been made available on a GBrowse implementation using M. truncatula as the reference genome, providing rapid access to the sequence data and associated comparative genome data.

The Brassica B-genome species possess many valuable agronomic and disease resistance traits. To transfer traits from the B genome of B. carinata into B. napus, an interspecific cross between B. napus and B. carinata was performed and a doubled haploid (DH) population was generated from the BC2S3 generation. Successful production of interspecific DH lines as identified using B-genome microsatellite markers is reported. Five percent of DH lines carry either intact B-genome chromosomes or chromosomes that have deletions. All of the DH lines have linkage group J13/B7 in common. This was further confirmed using B. nigra genomic DNA in a fluorescent in situ hybridization assay where the B-genome chromosomes were visualized and distinguished from the A- and C-genome chromosomes. The 60 DH lines were also evaluated for morphological traits in the field for two seasons and were tested for resistance to blackleg, caused by Leptosphaeria maculans, under greenhouse conditions. Variation in the DH population followed a normal distribution for several agronomic traits and response to blackleg. The lines with B-genome chromosomes were significantly different (p < 0.01) from the lines without B-genome chromosomes for both morphological and seed quality traits such as days to flowering, days to maturity, and erucic acid content.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: To investigate the effect of hydroxypropylmethylcellulose (HPMC) on the physical interaction (contact angle) between silicone oil and a silicone intraocular lens (IOL). METHODS: In vitro experiments were performed, to determine the effect of HPMC (0.5%, 1% or 2%), with or without an additional simple mechanical manoeuvre, on the contact angle of silicone oil at the surface of both silicone and acrylic (control) IOLs. A balanced salt solution chamber was used. The study group comprised 21 silicone and nine acrylic IOLs. RESULTS: The median contact angle of silicone oil on silicone IOL was 99 degrees. The addition of HPMC 2% alone did not significantly alter the contact angle. HPMC 2% combined with an additional single mechanical manoeuvre increased the contact angle to 180 degrees (greater non-wetting), with complete separation of silicone oil from silicone IOL within 1 min. The manoeuvre alone, or in conjunction with a lower concentration of HPMC (0.5 or 1%), was ineffective in increasing the contact angle. CONCLUSION: We present a novel, non-toxic technique of using hydroxypropylmethylcellulose 2% combined with a simple mechanical manoeuvre, for the removal of adherent silicone oil droplets from silicone intraocular lenses.

Extensive blood loss can occur when patients have major operations for head and neck neoplasia. The risks and costs of allogeneic blood transfusion have been well documented. Acute perioperative normovolaemic haemodilution (APNH) is a method of saving blood and autologous transfusion. The purpose of this study was to compare a group of patients having major head and neck operations who had APNH, with a historical group, to assess the need for allogeneic transfusion. Of the 21 patients who had APNH only one patient required allogeneic blood. In the historical group of 24 patients, 15 patients had required allogeneic blood (p=0.0001). APNH is an economic, safe and practical way of saving blood.

Because of the increasing resistance of bacteria to antibiotics there is considerable interest in light-activated antimicrobial agents (LAAAs) as alternatives to antibiotics for treating localized infections. The purpose of this study was to determine whether CdSe/ZnS quantum dots (QD) could enhance the antibacterial activity of the LAAA, toluidine blue O (TBO). Suspensions of Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes were exposed to white light (3600 lux) and TBO (absorbance maximum = 630 nm) in the presence and absence of 25 nm diameter QD (emission maximum = 627 nm). When the TBO:QD ratio was 2667:1, killing of Staph. aureus was enhanced by 1.72log(10) units. In the case of Strep. pyogenes, an enhanced kill of 1.55log(10) units was achieved using TBO and QD in the ratio 267:1. Singlet oxygen and fluorescence measurements showed that QD suppress the formation of singlet oxygen from TBO and that QD fluorescence is significantly quenched in the presence of TBO (70-90%). Enhanced killing appears to be attributable to a non-Förster resonance energy transfer mechanism, whereby the QD converts part of the incident light to the absorption maximum for TBO; hence more light energy is harvested, resulting in increased concentrations of bactericidal radicals. QD may, therefore, be useful in improving the efficacy of antimicrobial photodynamic therapy.

Fibularis tertius (FT) may be used during reconstructive surgery and muscle transposition with retention of function. The muscle was examined in both lower limbs of 41 cadavers. Measurements were made of muscle belly length and width, tendon length and width, and the size of the origin on the fibula. Tendon insertion, nerve and blood supplies were also examined. FT was absent in five (6.1%) lower limbs of three (7.3%) subjects. The size of its origin demonstrated inter- and intra-individual variation. FT arose from the distal fibula and on average occupied (28.4 +/- 9.1)% (mean +/- S. D.) of the total shaft length. In all cases the tendon inserted into the dorsal surface of the shafts of both the fourth and fifth metatarsals. A small nerve branch consistently arose from the deep fibular nerve near the origin of extensor digitorum longus. The nerve ran parallel to the length of this muscle, between it and extensor hallucis longus, before piercing FT. Anatomy textbooks describe FT as inserting into the fifth metatarsal only. This study, supported by data from previous reports, suggests that the "textbook" accounts of FT should be updated to record that most commonly its tendon reaches both the fourth and fifth metatarsals.

The insertion of the tendon of subscapularis is accepted as being on the lesser tubercle of the humerus. The transverse humeral ligament (THL) is described as a distinct entity in most textbooks, overlying the long tendon of biceps as it emerges from the capsule of the shoulder joint. In this study, we dissected 85 embalmed shoulders to clarify the anatomy of the THL and variation in the insertion of the tendon of subscapularis. In all specimens no distinct THL could be identified, but in every shoulder a fibrous expansion arose from the posterior lamina of the tendon of pectoralis major overlying the long tendon of biceps. In 86% of shoulders, fibres from the tendon of subscapularis passed over the long tendon of biceps within this fibrous expansion and inserted on to the greater tubercle of the humerus where one would expect to find the THL. In 33% of dissections, fibres from the tendon of subscapularis lay deep to the long tendon of biceps, inserting either into the bicipital groove or on to the greater tubercle. In only 8% of cases did the tendon of subscapularis insert exclusively on to the lesser tubercle. We conclude that the THL does not exist as a separate entity. We suggest that in the majority of cases, the structure overlying the long tendon of biceps as it emerges from the capsule of the shoulder joint consists of tendinous fibres from subscapularis, contained within a fibrous expansion derived from the posterior lamina of the tendon of pectoralis major. In the minority of shoulders, where the tendon of subscapularis inserts exclusively on to the lesser tubercle, we hypothesise that this fibrous expansion acts as a retinaculum preventing the long tendon of biceps from "bowstringing."

Knowledge of variations of the circumflex femoral arteries is important when undertaking clinical procedures within the femoral region and in hip joint replacement. Since the 19th century, many different patterns have been proposed to classify their origins. This work studied a statistically reliable sample, the lower limbs of 221 embalmed human cadavers (equal right-left and approximately equal sex distributions), and reviewed the previous literature to propose a unified and simple classification that will be useful to clinicians. Statistical comparisons were made using the chi(2) test. The medial and lateral circumflex femoral arteries have been classified into three different patterns based on the levels of their origin. Distribution related to sex and side was also studied. Pattern I: Both arteries arose from the deep femoral artery (346 cases, 78.8%). This pattern was more frequent in females, P = 0.01. There was no significant difference between sides. Type Ia, medial circumflex femoral artery origin was proximal to the lateral circumflex femoral artery origin (53.2%); Type Ib, lateral circumflex femoral artery origin was proximal to medial circumflex femoral artery origin (23.4%); Type Ic, both arteries arose from a common trunk (23.4%). Pattern II: One of the arteries arose from the femoral artery and the other from the deep femoral artery (90 cases, 20.5%). Type IIa, the medial circumflex femoral artery arose from the femoral artery (77.8%) and Type IIb, the lateral circumflex femoral artery arose from the femoral artery (22.2%). There were no significant differences between sexes or sides. Pattern III: Both arteries arose from the femoral artery (2 cases, 0.5%). In every disposition there was a significantly higher prevalence of unilateral rather than bilateral occurrence. In one dissection the medial circumflex femoral artery was absent. Awareness of these variations could avoid unexpected injuries.
