Background: Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy can determine characteristics such as cell density, size, and shape. The development of an electrical impedance-based medical device to estimate acute ischemic stroke (AIS) clot characteristics could improve stroke patient outcomes by informing clinical decision making. Objectives: To assess how well electrical impedance combined with machine learning identified red blood cell (RBC)-rich composition of AIS clots ex vivo, which is associated with a successfully modified first-pass effect. Methods: A total of 253 clots from 231 patients who underwent thrombectomy in 5 hospitals in France, Japan, Serbia, and Spain between February 2021 and October 2023 were analyzed in the Clotbase International Registry. Electrical impedance measurements were taken following clot retrieval by thrombectomy, followed by Martius Scarlet Blue staining. The clot components were quantified via Orbit Image Analysis, and RBC percentages were correlated with the RBC estimations made by the electrical impedance machine learning model. Results: Quantification by Martius Scarlet Blue staining identified RBCs as the major component in clots (RBCs, 37.6%; white blood cells, 5.7%; fibrin, 25.5%; platelets/other, 30.3%; and collagen, 1%). The impedance-based RBC estimation correlated well with the RBC content determined by histology, with a slope of 0.9 and Spearman's correlation of r = 0.7. Clots removed in 1 pass were significantly richer in RBCs and clots with successful recanalization in 1 pass (modified first-pass effect) were richer in RBCs as assessed using histology and impedance signature. Conclusion: Electrical impedance estimations of RBC content in AIS clots are consistent with histologic findings and may have potential for clinically relevant parameters.

Background: Active and passive biomechanical properties of platelets contribute substantially to thrombus formation. Actomyosin contractility drives clot contraction required for stabilizing the hemostatic plug. Impaired contractility results in bleeding but is difficult to detect using platelet function tests. Objectives: To determine how diminished myosin activity affects platelet functions, including and beyond clot contraction. Methods: Using the myosin IIA-specific pharmacologic inhibitor blebbistatin, we modulated myosin activity in platelets from healthy donors and systematically characterized platelet responses at various levels of inhibition by interrogating distinct platelet functions at each stage of thrombus formation using a range of complementary assays. Results: Partial myosin IIA inhibition neither affected platelet von Willebrand factor interactions under arterial shear nor platelet spreading and cytoskeletal rearrangements on fibrinogen. However, it impacted stress fiber formation and the nanoarchitecture of cell-matrix adhesions, drastically reducing and limiting traction forces. Higher blebbistatin concentrations impaired platelet adhesion under flow, altered mechanosensing at lamellipodia edges, and eliminated traction forces without affecting platelet spreading, α-granule secretion, or procoagulant platelet formation. Unexpectedly, myosin IIA inhibition reduced calcium influx, dense granule secretion, and platelet aggregation downstream of glycoprotein (GP)VI and limited the redistribution of GPVI on the cell membrane, whereas aggregation induced by adenosine diphosphate or arachidonic acid was unaffected. Conclusion: Our findings highlight the importance of both active contractile and passive crosslinking roles of myosin IIA in the platelet cytoskeleton. They support the hypothesis that highly contractile platelets are needed for hemostasis and further suggest a supportive role for myosin IIA in GPVI signaling.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to environmental tobacco smoke (ETS) is arguably the most ubiquitous and hazardous, even at very low levels, starting in early life. The objective of this study was to describe the state of research and future trends on ETS exposure and Children's Health (CH) topics with bibliometrics and altmetrics. METHODS: An electronic search was performed in Scopus database on January 31, 2023. Consensus was arrived on 100 most-cited articles by two reviewers. These papers were then cross matched with citations harvested from Web of Science (WoS) and Google Scholar. Altmetric Attention Score (AAS) and Dimension counts were also collected. Analysis and network visualization of authors, countries, and keywords were generated using VOSviewer software. RESULTS: Among a total of 1107 articles published on ETS and CH, the 100 top-cited articles appeared in 54 journals, with Pediatrics (n = 12) contributing a maximum number of articles. The time period between 2000 and 2009 accounted for 44% of all publications. With respect to the research design employed across these studies, cross-sectional design took precedence over others accounting for approximately 40%. Predominantly, articles focused on childhood asthma; however, current research trends have shifted towards emerging fields such as children's oral health and DNA methylation. Twitter, policy documents, and news outlets were the main platforms where outputs were discussed. The AAS was not associated with journal impact factor or access type. Weak correlations were observed between AAS and citation count in Scopus, WoS, and Google Scholar (r = 0.17 to 0.27) while a positive association existed between dimension count and the number of citations across all three databases (r = 0.84 to 0.98). CONCLUSION: This study demonstrates the evolution, digital dissemination and research hotspots in the field of ETS and CH, predicting the possible future research directions. High-quality studies with more specific exposure classification are warranted to better understand the relationship between ETS and CH.

It is uncommon for bony cervical spine lesions to cause dysphagia. Middle-aged female presented in the outpatient clinic with complaints of dysphagia of insidious onset. Patient's medical history, clinical manifestation and imaging studies guided the diagnosis of spinal osteoid osteoma. The presentation and surgical management are discussed in this report. BACKGROUND: Intra-procedural characterization of stroke thromboemboli might guide mechanical thrombectomy (MT) device choice to improve recanalization rates. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) has been used to characterize various biological tissues in real time but has not been used in thrombus. OBJECTIVE: To perform a feasibility study of EIS analysis of thrombi retrieved by MT to evaluate: (1) the ability of EIS and machine learning to predict red blood cell (RBC) percentage content of thrombi and (2) to classify the thrombi as "RBC-rich" or "RBC-poor" based on a range of cutoff values of RBC. METHODS: ClotbasePilot was a multicentric, international, prospective feasibility study. Retrieved thrombi underwent histological analysis to identify proportions of RBC and other components. EIS results were analyzed with machine learning. Linear regression was used to evaluate the correlation between the histology and EIS. Sensitivity and specificity of the model to classify the thrombus as RBC-rich or RBC-poor were also evaluated. RESULTS: Among 514 MT,179 thrombi were included for EIS and histological analysis. The mean composition in RBC of the thrombi was 36% ± 24. Good correlation between the impedance-based prediction and histology was achieved (slope of 0.9, R2 = 0.53, Pearson coefficient = 0.72). Depending on the chosen cutoff, ranging from 20 to 60% of RBC, the calculated sensitivity for classification of thrombi ranged from 77 to 85% and the specificity from 72 to 88%. CONCLUSION: Combination of EIS and machine learning can reliably predict the RBC composition of retrieved ex vivo AIS thrombi and then classify them into groups according to their RBC composition with good sensitivity and specificity.

Aim: To assess the changes in salivary profile and its clinical correlation in patients with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) undergoing chemotherapy. Materials and methods: Children who have been diagnosed with ALL undergoing chemotherapy at Bharati Hospital, Pune, were included in the study. Those children were included who fulfilled the following inclusion and exclusion criteria. Stimulated salivary samples were collected in sterile vials at 1-, 3-, and 6-month intervals and ware assessed for salivary pH and buffering capacity. Caries and oral manifestations were also checked at each interval. Results: A total of 25 children with ALL undergoing chemotherapy were included to participate in the study. The results were analyzed using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences software. There was a statistically significant difference in the change in salivary pH during the 1st and 6th months of chemotherapy (p-value of 0.001). Salivary buffering capacity was also found to be low in these patients during the 1st month of chemotherapy, which gradually increased during the entire course of chemotherapy (p-value of 0.011). Progression of dental caries was seen during the entire course of treatment. Conclusion: All the major changes were seen in the 1st month, that is, the induction phase of chemotherapy. Hence, we can say this is the most affected phase of chemotherapy. Clinical significance: The parents and children should be educated and motivated to maintain proper oral hygiene. Whenever possible, all preventive dental procedures should be undertaken before the start of chemotherapy to avoid future complications. Fahr's disease is an exceptionally rare and complex neurological disorder characterized by abnormal calcium deposition in the basal ganglia and cerebral cortex. This case report presents a 27-year-old female with Fahr's disease, showcasing the striking clinical diversity and challenging diagnostic landscape associated with this condition. Despite its rarity, Fahr's disease can have a profound impact on patients, manifesting as a spectrum of neurological symptoms, cognitive deficits, and motor impairment. Recent advancements in research have illuminated genetic aspects, offering potential avenues for enhanced diagnostic accuracy and therapeutic interventions. Treatment for Fahr's disease remains primarily supportive, targeting neuropsychiatric symptoms and seizure prophylaxis. Our case highlights the unique presentation of a young female patient with Fahr's disease, challenging conventional demographic profiles and emphasizing the need for individualized patient assessments. The utilization of non-contrast CT scans in diagnosis underscores the importance of appropriate imaging techniques, given the diverse clinical manifestations of this condition. This case adds to the growing understanding of Fahr's disease, emphasizing its clinical heterogeneity and advancing the quest for tailored approaches to diagnosis and intervention.

Microalgae cultivation utilizes the energy of sunlight to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) for producing renewable energy feedstock. The commercial success of the biological fixation of carbon in a consistent manner depends upon the availability of a robust microalgae strain. In the present work, we report the identification of a novel marine Nannochloris sp. through multiparametric photosynthetic evaluation. Detailed photobiological analysis of this strain has revealed a smaller functional antenna, faster relaxation kinetics of non-photochemical quenching, and a high photosynthetic rate with increasing light and temperatures. Furthermore, laboratory scale growth assessment demonstrated a broad range halotolerance of 10-70 parts per thousand (PPT) and high-temperature tolerance up to 45 °C. Such traits led to the translation of biomass productivity potential from the laboratory scale (0.2-3.0 L) to the outdoor 50,000 L raceway pond scale (500-m2) without any pond crashes. The current investigation revealed outdoor single-day peak areal biomass productivity of 43 g m-2 d-1 in summer with an annual (March 2019-February 2020) average productivity of 20 g m-2 d-1 in seawater. From a sustainability perspective, this is the first report of successful round-the-year (> 347 days) multi-season (summer, monsoon, and winter) outdoor cultivation of Nannochloris sp. in broad seawater salinity (1-57 PPT), wide temperature ranges (15-40 °C), and in fluctuating light conditions. Concurrently, outdoor cultivation of this strain demonstrated conducive fatty acid distribution, including increased unsaturated fatty acids in winter. This inherent characteristic might play a role in protecting photosynthesis machinery at low temperatures and in high light stress. Altogether, our marine Nannochloris sp. showed tremendous potential for commercial scale cultivation to produce biofuels, food ingredients, and a sustainable source for vegetarian protein.

Objective: The aim of this research was to evaluate and compare the effect of a packaged orange juice on the two most commonly used restorative materials in pediatric dentistry. Methodology: Fifteen samples each of 6 mm diameter and 2 mm thickness of a glass ionomer cement (GIC) and an esthetic restorative material were prepared using silicone rings. These were exposed to a packaged orange fruit juice and then placed in a standard culture of Streptococcus mutans. The bacterial adhesion to these samples was evaluated after exposure to the fruit juice for 1 day and for 7 days. Results: Results from the study show that there is a decrease in the colony forming unit (CFU) after exposure to the packaged fruit juice as opposed to the studies using carbonated acidic drinks, which have shown a consistent rise in the CFU due to a change in the surface morphology. Conclusion: Within the limitations of this study, it was seen that the consumption of fruit juice may not cause a deteriorating effect on the restorative materials considered. However, the results were not statistically significant and further research is necessary to come to a conclusion regarding the reduction in the bacterial count after exposure to the fruit juice. Stroke is one of the leading causes of disability worldwide. Early diagnosis and treatment of stroke are important for better clinical outcome. Rapid and accurate diagnosis of stroke subtypes is critical. This review discusses the advantages and disadvantages of the current diagnostic and assessment techniques used in clinical practice, particularly for diagnosing acute ischemic stroke. Alternative techniques for rapid detection of stroke utilizing blood based biomarkers and novel portable devices employing imaging methods such as volumetric impedance phase-shift spectroscopy, microwave tomography and Doppler ultrasound are also discussed. Current therapeutic approaches for treating acute ischemic stroke using thrombolytic drugs and endovascular thrombectomy are discussed, with a focus on devices and approaches recently developed to treat large cranial vessel occlusions.

AIM: The study was conducted to assess the changes in bone density before and after performing accelerated orthodontic maxillary canine retraction by microosteoperforations (MOPs). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty patients (120 cone-beam computed tomography [CBCT] images) within the age group of 15 to 25 years undergoing fixed orthodontic treatment with bilateral maxillary first premolar extraction were enrolled in this study. The right and left sides of the maxillary jaw in the same patients were selected as experimental and control sites. To accelerate the tooth movement, MOPs were performed distal to the canine root in the extraction space under local anesthesia with a miniscrew. Thereafter, the maxillary canine retraction was initiated using a NiTi closed coil spring. The CBCT images were taken and evaluated at the following time intervals: 1 week before MOPs(T0);1 week after MOPs(T1);3 weeks after MOPs(T2). RESULTS: A statistically significant reduction in bone density was observed at the center of resistance of canine on the experimental site (after MOPs) at 1 week and 3 weeks (T0-T1 = 0.000,0.115; T1-T2 = 0.0025,0.0117), whereas a statistically non-significant difference was found 1 week before and 3 weeks later in the control group. CONCLUSION: Accelerated orthodontics by MOPscan result in a substantial reduction in bone density during canine retraction, leading to an increase in the tooth movement rate, hence lowering the overall orthodontic treatment time.

Treatment of acute ischaemic stroke (AIS) focuses on rapid recanalisation of the occluded artery. In recent years, advent of mechanical thrombectomy devices and new procedures have accelerated the analysis of thrombi retrieved during the endovascular thrombectomy procedure. Despite ongoing developments and progress in AIS imaging techniques, it is not yet possible to conclude definitively regarding thrombus characteristics that could advise on the probable efficacy of thrombolysis or thrombectomy in advance of treatment. Intraprocedural devices with dignostic capabilities or new clinical imaging approaches are needed for better treatment of AIS patients. In this review, what is known about the composition of the thrombi that cause strokes and the evidence that thrombus composition has an impact on success of acute stroke treatment has been examined. This review also discusses the evidence that AIS thrombus composition varies with aetiology, questioning if suspected aetiology could be a useful indicator to stroke physicians to help decide the best acute course of treatment. Furthermore, this review discusses the evidence that current widely used radiological imaging tools can predict thrombus composition. Further use of new emerging technologies based on bioimpedance, as imaging modalities for diagnosing AIS and new medical device tools for detecting thrombus composition in situ has been introduced. Whether bioimpedance would be beneficial for gaining new insights into in situ thrombus composition that could guide choice of optimum treatment approach is also reviewed.

The challenge that practicing dentists face every day is to decide which dental material is best suited for each dental treatment. New glass-ionomer cement (GIC) formulations have been introduced in order to overcome the drawbacks of conventional ones thereby catering to the needs of the pediatric population. Aim and objective: The study aimed to evaluate and compare water sorption, solubility, and microhardness of zirconia-reinforced glass ionomer, resin-modified glass ionomer, type IX glass ionomer cements. Materials and methods: 90 specimens were prepared in total of which 45 cylindrical specimens with dimensions of (6 × 4) mm and 45 disks with (10 × 2) mm were prepared from Zirconomer, RMGIC, and Type IX GIC restorative materials, each material having 30 specimens (15 disks, 15 cylinders). After taking the initial weight (W1), the 45 cylinders (15 of each material) were immersed in artificial saliva at 37°C for 28 days after which the weights W2 and W3 were weighed. The other 45 disks (15 of each material) were subjected to microhardness test under microhardness tester. Results were subjected to ANOVA and Tuckey's post hoc test. Results: Zirconomer showed the maximum resistance to water sorption and solubility followed by RMGIC and type IX GIC with a significant p value of < 0.001 difference. For microhardness, Zirconomer showed the highest value with a significant p value of < 0.001 difference. But, there was no significant difference between RMGIC and Type IX GIC depicting almost equal strength. Conclusion: Water sorption, solubility, and microhardness of Zirconomer were significantly high in comparison to the other groups and it can be used as a posterior restorative material for stress-bearing areas. Clinical Significance: As pediatric dentistry demands restorations to be completed frequently in less than ideal conditions, Zirconomer has shown to be better than RMGIC and conventional GIC probably because of the improvisation in the GIC properties. Radicular cyst involving the deciduous dentition is rare. Most of the cases reported it with primary molar teeth with apical infection. But very rare literature is available regarding radicular cysts associated with primary incisors. Case report: A case of 9-year-old boy, who had bilaterally impacted supernumerary teeth, had developed a radicular cyst associated with a previously traumatized and intruded right upper primary lateral incisor is reported. Supernumerary teeth and intruded primary lateral incisor were removed along with enucleation of a radicular cyst. Conclusion: The importance of correct diagnosis and management of radicular cyst in pediatric patients is important as most of the radicular cysts of primary teeth go undiagnosed, which can affect the developing succedaneous tooth bud. Introduction: A drop in pH of the oral cavity results in demineralization, which, if continued, leads to loss of minerals from tooth structure, resulting in dental caries. A goal of modern dentistry is to manage noncavitated caries lesions noninvasively through remineralization in an attempt to prevent disease progression. Materials and methods: A total of 40 extracted premolar teeth were selected for the study. The specimens were divided into four groups, group I, the control group; group II, remineralizing agent as fluoride toothpaste; group III, the treatment material as ginger and honey paste; and group IV, the treatment material as ozone oil. An initial reading of surface roughness and hardness was recorded for the group (control group). Repeated treatment has continued lasting 21 days. This saliva was changed each day. Following the lesion formation procedure, the surface microhardness was measured for all specimens. The parameters were 200 gm force for 15 seconds with a Vickers indenter and the roughness of the demineralized area of each specimen was obtained by using the surface roughness tester. Results: Surface roughness was checked by using a surface roughness tester. Before starting the pH cycle, the baseline value for the control group was calculated. The baseline value for the control group was calculated. The surface roughness average value for 10 samples is 0.555 µm and the average surface microhardness is 304 HV; the average surface roughness value for fluoride is 0.244 µm and the microhardness is 256 HV, 0.241 µm, and 271 HV value for honey-ginger paste. For ozone surface roughness average value is 0.238 µm and the surface microhardness average mean value is 253 HV. Conclusion: The future of dentistry will rely on the regeneration of tooth structure. There is no significant difference seen between each treatment group. Considering the adverse effect of fluoride, we can consider honey-ginger and ozone as good remineralizing agents for fluoride. Aim: The aim of this study is to compare and evaluate compressive strength (CS) and diametral tensile strength (DTS) of a conventional glass ionomer cement (GIC) and a glass hybrid GIC. Materials and methods: Five samples each were prepared of GC Fuji IX and EQUIA Forte cements for CS testing and five samples of each material for tensile strength testing. Specimens were subjected to a universal testing machine. Comparison of CS and DTS among two study groups was made using an independent t-test for each. Level of significance was set at p ≤ 0.05. Results: Both test values were on the higher side for EQUIA Forte cement as compared to conventional GIC (p ≥ 0.05). However, the differences in values were not statistically significant. Conclusion: EQUIA Forte can serve as an alternative to conventional GIC in stress-bearing primary teeth areas. Considering several factors like cost-effectiveness, surface to be restored, moisture contamination, and time considerations, the material of choice can be tailored to one's needs. RESUMEN

AIM: The purpose of the study was to evaluate the efficacy of infrazygomatic (IZ) implants along with mini-implants for full-arch distalization of maxilla and reduction of gummy smile in patients with class II division I malocclusion. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Ten orthodontic patients were taken from the department of orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics. Each patient required distalization and intrusion of the complete maxillary arch as a part of the treatment plan. Patients were of class II malocclusion with gummy smile. Initial leveling and alignment were done by using 0.22″ slot Mclaughlin Bennett Trevisi (MBT) prescription. Fav Anchor infrazygomatic crest (IZC) implants of 2 mm of head diameter and 14 mm length were inserted between first and second molar and 2 mm above the mucogingival junction in the alveolar mucosa and in the anterior region, two titanium mini-implants of 1.4 mm head diameter and 6 mm length. The screws were loaded immediately with e-chain with a minimal force from mini-implants in the anterior region to crimpable hook placed between lateral and canine and continuing the same till the IZ implants. To measure the amount of distalization and reduction of gummy smile, pre- and postlateral cephalograms were taken and assessed. Pre- and postdistalization and intrusion readings of all patients were obtained and calculated statistically for quantifying the amount of distalization of maxillary arch and intrusion for reduction of gummy smile. RESULTS: The distalization of the maxillary arch achieved was 4.6 mm which is clinically and statistically significant. The anterior teeth in the study were intruded with a minimum of 3.8 mm which is clinically and statistically significant; the gingival smile line was reduced with a mean of 3.4 mm which is clinically and statistically significant. Overbite correction of 4 mm was done with the mean difference of 4 mm which is also statistically significant. CONCLUSION: The IZ bone screws can be effectively used as an absolute anchorage to correct class II skeletal discrepancy with gummy smile devoid of premolar extraction with noninvasive procedure. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The use of IZC implants along with anterior implants, a biomechanical approach is effective in achieving full-arch distalization of maxilla and intrusion as the force vectors allow that the line of action passes through the center of resistance (Cr) of the entire maxillary arch, facilitates the distalization and intrusion of the maxillary arch, establishes ideal occlusion, and improves the smile esthetics.

BACKGROUND: We aimed to determine the fluoride release and fluoride-recharging ability of a sealant containing surface pre-reacted glass (S-PRG) ionomer filler particles (BeautiSealant) with a fluoride-releasing resin sealant (Helioseal F), and a glass-ionomer sealant (Fuji VII). METHODOLOGY: Forty-eight disc-shaped specimens of each material were immersed in deionized water to determine the fluoride release utilizing a fluoride ion-selective electrode. After 21 days, 8 specimens were soaked in 0.22% Sodium Fluoride solution for 2 min; 8 specimens were coated with 1.23% Acidulated Phosphate Fluoride (APF) gel for 4 min, and the fluoride-recharging ability was evaluated for 40 days. Data were analyzed using one way-ANOVA and Bonferroni post hoc tests. RESULTS: Total fluoride release over the 21-day period was: Fuji VII > BeautiSealant > Helioseal F, (P = 0.000). After refluoridation of the specimens with 0.22% Sodium Fluoride solution, the cumulative fluoride release during the 40-day period for each material was: BeautiSealant > Fuji VII > Helioseal (P = 0.000). After exposure to 1.23% APF gel, the cumulative fluoride release during the 40-day period for each material was: BeautiSealant > Fuji VII > Helioseal F (P = 0.000). CONCLUSION: Glass ionomer-based sealants (Fuji VII) exhibited higher initial fluoride release whilst the surface pre-reacted glass-ionomer filler containing sealant (BeautiSealant) demonstrated superior fluoride recharging properties.
