RESUMEN

HYPOTHESIS: Chitin is a biopolymer which can be used as a low-cost and eco-friendly material for dyes adsorption. The use of chitin for dyes removal is little investigated, due its low surface area, porosity and high crystallinity. So, an ultrasonic surface modified chitin (USM-chitin) was prepared and used for Methylene Blue (MB) adsorption. EXPERIMENTS: Chitin was obtained from shrimp wastes and its surface was modified by an ultrasound-assisted treatment. USM-chitin was characterized by N2 adsorption/desorption isotherms (BET surface area, total pore volume), infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. The adsorption of MB on USM-chitin was studied by kinetic, equilibrium, thermodynamic, interactions analysis, desorption and mass transfer aspects. FINDINGS: USM-chitin presented surface area 25 times higher than raw chitin. The porosity was increased and the crystallinity was decreased. The general order model was suitable to represent the adsorption kinetics and the Langmuir model was adequate for the equilibrium. The maximum adsorption capacity was 26.69 mg g(-1). The adsorption was spontaneous, favorable and exothermic. USM-chitin can be used seven times maintaining the same adsorption capacity.

RESUMEN

Aniline groups chemically immobilized on silica through the sol-gel process were employed to extract divalent nickel and manganese from aqueous solutions at room temperature. The maximum adsorption capacity of the xerogel was studied from adsorption isotherms using a batch technique. The isotherms obtained were adjusted following the Langmuir equation. The xerogel adsorbent appears to have better affinity for nickel than manganese. From calorimetric titration, thermodynamic data on cation/nitrogen basic atom interaction in the solid/liquid interface were determined. The enthalpic values, -0.46 +/- 0.02 and -.029 +/- 0.02 kJ mol(-1) for nickel and manganese, respectively, are in agreement with the low availability of the basic nitrogen atom on the aniline group and also the possible steric hindrance of the phenyl group bonded to nitrogen. However, thermodynamics indicated the existence of favorable conditions for such cation-nitrogen interactions.

RESUMEN

Deltamethrin (S)-alpha-cyano-3-phenoxybenzyl) (1R,3R)-3-(2, 2-dibromovinyl)-2,2-dimethylcyclopropane-1-carboxylate is classified as a pyrethroid pesticide that is largely used as an acaricide and scabicide. For bovines, especially, the treatment is done with the aid of dipping baths of the pyrethroid solution. Analytical control of the concentration of deltamethrin in these baths must be done periodically in order to guarantee treatment efficacy. In the proposed procedure, the sample is prepared by centrifugation followed by filtration and measurement by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with spectrophotometric detection at 275 nm. Separation is done in a Nucleosil C-18 column with acetonitrile-water as the mobile phase. A calibration curve was constructed with external standards, and a detection limit of 0.2 mg L(-)(1) was obtained. In the samples analyzed, only ca. 20% of the total deltamethrin content was found in the solution. The results obtained demonstrate the potential of the described procedure for the determination of deltamethrin in animal baths.
