RESUMEN

The adapted DIRAC experiment at the CERN PS accelerator observed for the first time long-lived hydrogenlike π^{+}π^{-} atoms, produced by protons hitting a beryllium target. A part of these atoms crossed the gap of 96 mm between the target and a 2.1 µm thick platinum foil, in which most of them dissociated. Analyzing the observed number of atomic pairs, n_{A}^{L}=436_{-61}^{+157}|_{tot}, the lifetime of the 2p state is found to be τ_{2p}=(0.45_{-0.30}^{+1.08}|_{tot})×10^{-11} s, not contradicting the corresponding QED 2p state lifetime τ_{2p}^{QED}=1.17×10^{-11} s. This lifetime value is three orders of magnitude larger than our previously measured value of the π^{+}π^{-} atom ground state lifetime τ=(3.15_{-0.26}^{+0.28}|_{tot})×10^{-15} s. Further studies of long-lived π^{+}π^{-} atoms will allow us to measure energy differences between p and s atomic states and so to discriminate between the isoscalar and isotensor ππ scattering lengths with the aim to check QCD predictions.

RESUMEN

The observation of hydrogenlike πK atoms, consisting of π^{-}K^{+} or π^{+}K^{-} mesons, is presented. The atoms are produced by 24 GeV/c protons from the CERN PS accelerator, interacting with platinum or nickel foil targets. The breakup (ionization) of πK atoms in the same targets yields characteristic πK pairs, called "atomic pairs," with small relative momenta Q in the pair center-of-mass system. The upgraded DIRAC experiment observed 349±62 such atomic πK pairs, corresponding to a signal of 5.6 standard deviations. This is the first statistically significant observation of the strange dimesonic πK atom.

RESUMEN

AIM: The aim of this study was to determine the role of parents after extubation of their children affected by Spinal Muscular Atrophy Type 1 (SMA1) in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit. Currently, children affected by SMA1 are often treated with non-invasive mechanical ventilation and mechanical support of cough. During the first two or three years of life they frequently present severe respiratory failure requiring intubation. Extubation may be at severe risk of failure even because of inadequate care. METHODS: Parents of SMA1 children were offered an early education on the most critical aspects and a training in non-invasive respiratory support after diagnosis. They were asked and allowed to stay as longer as possible with their child after extubation. Quality and quantity of care given by parents during the first 24 hours after extubation were recorded. RESULTS: All parents participated to the success of the weaning procedure: they gave continuous care and all children could be extubated. CONCLUSION: The presence of parents after extubation of SMA1 patients is important for the success of the procedure; otherwise, the presence of a skilled nurse is needed, with a nurse-patient ratio of 1:1.

We studied the effect of protein phosphatase and kinase inhibitors on Tax-mediated transcription of constructs carrying the reporter gene chloramphenicol acetyl transferase under the control of either the full-length LTR of HTLV-I or three copies of the tax-responsive 21-bp repeats. We observed that treatment with okadaic acid, which inhibits the serine/threonine protein phosphatases type 1 and 2A, reduced HTLV-I LTR transcriptional activation in MT2 and K562 cells; on the contrary, the enhancer activity of the 21-bp sequences was significantly increased in both cell lines; treatment with the protein kinase C inhibitor H-7 blocked Tax-mediated transcription of both constructs. We also found that treatment with sodium orthovanadate, a tyrosine phosphatase inhibitor, reduced Tax-mediated activation of both plasmids. These findings indicated that specific serine/threonine phosphorylation events are required for Tax-mediated HTLV-I LTR activation and also suggested that phosphorylation at tyrosine residues is involved in this process.
