RESUMEN

Asphyxia due to strangulation is an uncommon but important modality of homicide that tends to disproportionately involve female victims. The present study was designed to investigate the circumstances, motivations, and injuries associated with strangulation homicides of females and to measure trends in incidence over time. Electronic records of the King County Medical Examiner's Office in Seattle, Washington, were used to compile a data set of all homicides in King County from 1995 through 2022. A second data set of female homicides due to strangulation was constructed with additional records prior to 1995, supplemented with data abstracted from autopsy reports, and linked to the Washington Attorney General's Office Homicide Investigation Tracking System database. This comprehensive data set was used to analyze demographics, circumstances, motives, and injuries of female strangulation homicides from 1978 through 2016. The results found that, from 1995 through 2022, females accounted for 22.8% of 2394 homicides but 80.3% of strangulation homicides. The average annual rate of all strangulation homicides decreased until 2020. Mean ages of female decedents were 27.7 years in homicides associated with sexual assault, 36.8 years with domestic violence, and 63.9 years with robbery. Lethal assaults most often occurred in private homes, and perpetrators were usually well known to the victim. Injuries included petechiae in 83%; ligature marks in 20%; fingernail marks in 1.4%; hyoid fractures in 23%; and thyroid cartilage fractures in 31%. Fractures were more common in manual strangulation and in decedents of ages over 40 years.

The MV X-Press Pearl marine debacle severely affected the marine environment in the Indian Ocean. The objective of this study is to monitor environmental pollution along the west coast of Sri Lanka. Beach sand samples were collected from 40 locations. Visual and microscopic observations, plastic pellets pollution index (PPI), and degradation effects of plastic nurdles were examined. Chemical and thermal characteristics were investigated using Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometric analysis (ICP-MS) and Fourier Transform Infra-Red Spectroscopic analysis (FTIR) analyses, respectively. Cylindrical-shaped plastic nurdles (>0.2 cm in size) were observed in off-white (mainly), yellow, and black colours. The white colour plastic nurdles change to yellow at 240 °C and black at 300 °C. Epamulla (PPI = 1940-3364) and Sarakkuwa (PPI = 2158-3466) beaches were recognized as the most contaminated beaches during the initial sampling (i.e., after six to eight days of the explosion of the vessel). Well-rounded small plastic nurdles (i.e., after one year of the disaster) can indicate degradation effects. FTIR results confirm (i) plastic nurdles as low-density polyethylene (LDPE) and (ii) alteration of the chemical composition of nurdles at a low temperature of 60 °C. In this case, a significant amount of microplastics have been added to the environment under the influence of UV irradiation and abrasion against beach sand. In addition, the presence of heavy metals (e.g., arsenic, cadmium, lead, and copper) in swash zone sediments is a great threat to marine animals and plants. Consequently, the ingestion of microplastics and heavy metals would be increased in a wide range of marine organisms and can be bio-accumulated in humans through seafood and salt.

A case report from Sri Lanka on surrogacy leading to a tragic maternal death; medico-legal and ethical aspects. Surrogacy, with multiple ethical and legal issues associated with it, is practised worldwide. Although regulations are not available in Sri Lanka, we report a woman who had a tragic death as a complication of surrogate pregnancy. The body of a young mother with four living children was brought for autopsy examination. According to the documents provided, there was a controversy about the deceased's identity. A woman volunteered to show a pillow trapped in her abdomen, simulating a pregnancy. By surrogacy, her husband's sperm were inseminated in this woman's uterus artificially according to a contract. She was diagnosed and managed for pregnancy-induced hypertension in the second trimester. At 36 weeks of gestation, she was admitted to the hospital in labour. On admission, she was icteric with elevated blood pressure. A cesarean section delivered a baby, and it was noted that she had an abruption of the placenta. She developed a postpartum haemorrhage following delivery, and resuscitation failed, resulting in her death. She had elevated liver enzymes and low serum proteins before death. Autopsy findings included intense icterus, congested lungs, global ischemic changes in the myocardium, pale kidneys and fatty soft yellow liver. This case discusses many unanticipated legal and ethical issues related to surrogate pregnancy, especially in a lack of regulations regarding the practice and relatively cheap medical expenses.

RESUMEN

Sri Lanka is positioned as an important hub for international shipping. The recent naval accidents of MT New Diamond (in 2020) and MV X-Press Pearl (in 2021) suggest that the country is at risk for future maritime environmental disasters. However, Sri Lanka still has no adequate planning and regulation at the national policy level. Therefore, the objective of the current study is to formulate a national policy and contingency plan to augment maritime safety. This paper proposed the framework for the integrated coastal zone management in Sri Lanka, based on the national acts and laws, existing regulations, and analysis of international experiences. The integrated coastal zone management framework is proposed into four hierarchical levels. The proposed framework establishes a permanent coordination and management system for environmental assessment and sustainability of the coastal zone. This article describes requirements for coastal zone management, reasons for failures during recent naval accidents, possible drawbacks of implementing an integrated coastal zone management framework in Sri Lanka, and ways to overcome these challenges.

Swellable polymers that respond to pH (including a portion of the physiological pH range) have been prepared from N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPA) copolymerized with acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, ethacrylic acid or propacrylic acid by dispersion polymerization. When the swellable polymer particles are dispersed in a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) hydrogel membrane, large changes occur in the turbidity of the membrane (which is measured using an absorbance spectrometer) as the pH of the buffer solution in contact with the hydrogel membrane is varied. The swelling of the NIPA copolymer is nonionic, as the ionic strength of the buffer solution in contact with the PVA membrane was increased from 0.1 to 1.0 M without a decrease in the swelling. For many of these NIPA copolymers, swelling was also reversible in both low- and high ionic strength pH-buffered media and at ambient and physiological temperatures. The composition of the formulation used to prepare these copolymers of NIPA can be correlated to the enthalpy and entropy of the pH-induced swelling.

A range of artificial molecular systems has been created that can exhibit controlled linear and rotational motion. In the further development of such systems, a key step is the addition of communication between molecules in a network. Here, we show that a two-dimensional array of dipolar molecular rotors can undergo simultaneous rotational switching when applying an electric field from the tip of a scanning tunnelling microscope. Several hundred rotors made from porphyrin-based double-decker complexes can be simultaneously rotated when in a hexagonal rotor network on a Cu(111) surface by applying biases above 1 V at 80 K. The phenomenon is observed only in a hexagonal rotor network due to the degeneracy of the ground-state dipole rotational energy barrier of the system. Defects are essential to increase electric torque on the rotor network and to stabilize the switched rotor domains. At low biases and low initial rotator angles, slight reorientations of individual rotors can occur, resulting in the rotator arms pointing in different directions. Analysis reveals that the rotator arm directions are not random, but are coordinated to minimize energy via crosstalk among the rotors through dipolar interactions.

Cancer invasion is a hallmark of metastasis. The mesenchymal mode of cancer cell invasion is mediated by elongated membrane protrusions driven by the assembly of branched F-actin networks. How deregulation of actin regulators promotes cancer cell invasion is still enigmatic. We report that increased expression and membrane localization of the actin regulator Lamellipodin correlate with reduced metastasis-free survival and poor prognosis in breast cancer patients. In agreement, we find that Lamellipodin depletion reduced lung metastasis in an orthotopic mouse breast cancer model. Invasive 3D cancer cell migration as well as invadopodia formation and matrix degradation was impaired upon Lamellipodin depletion. Mechanistically, we show that Lamellipodin promotes invasive 3D cancer cell migration via both actin-elongating Ena/VASP proteins and the Scar/WAVE complex, which stimulates actin branching. In contrast, Lamellipodin interaction with Scar/WAVE but not with Ena/VASP is required for random 2D cell migration. We identified a phosphorylation-dependent mechanism that regulates selective recruitment of these effectors to Lamellipodin: Abl-mediated Lamellipodin phosphorylation promotes its association with both Scar/WAVE and Ena/VASP, whereas Src-dependent phosphorylation enhances binding to Scar/WAVE but not to Ena/VASP. Through these selective, regulated interactions Lamellipodin mediates directional sensing of epidermal growth factor (EGF) gradients and invasive 3D migration of breast cancer cells. Our findings imply that increased Lamellipodin levels enhance Ena/VASP and Scar/WAVE activities at the plasma membrane to promote 3D invasion and metastasis.

Introduction: Only the Mini mental state examination (MMSE) and Montreal Cognitive Assessment scale have been validated in a Sri Lankan population for the assessment of cognitive functions. Both tests are deficient in the number of domains assessed. Therefore validation of Repeatable Battery for Assessment of Neuropsychological Status is important as it assesses most of the cognitive domains. Objectives: To culturally adapt RBANS and investigate the validity and reliability of culturally adapted RBANS (RBANS-S). Methods: Fifty four participants with major neurocognitive disorder and 60 normal controls aged >50 were administered with RBANS-S at the Cognitive Assessment Unit, Faculty of Medicine, Colombo and National Hospital of Sri Lanka. The participants were selected after a detailed clinical assessment according to Diagnostic and Statistical Manual ­ 5 criteria. Data were analysed using SPSS data package. Results: The mean age of the sample was 69.5 years. RBANS-S total scale correlated highly with MMSE total score, (Pearson correlational coefficient = 0.793 p=0.01). Criterion validity was assessed using receiver operating curve characteristic analysis and the area under the curve was 0.937. RBANS-S showed strong concurrent validity us indicated by its significant correlations with the MMSE. All of the RBANS-S subtests demonstrated significant correlations with the MMSE subsets. The sensitivity and specificity for RBANS-S was 89% and 85% respectively at a totals score of 80.5. The RBANS-S yielded a reliability coefficient of 0.929. Conclusions: Culturally adapted RBANS-S is a valid and reliable instrument which can be used in assessment of cognitive functions.

Narrow graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) constructed by atomically precise bottom-up synthesis from molecular precursors have attracted significant interest as promising materials for nanoelectronics. But there has been little awareness of the potential of GNRs to serve as nanoscale building blocks of novel materials. Here we show that the substitutional doping with nitrogen atoms can trigger the hierarchical self-assembly of GNRs into ordered metamaterials. We use GNRs doped with eight N atoms per unit cell and their undoped analogues, synthesized using both surface-assisted and solution approaches, to study this self-assembly on a support and in an unrestricted three-dimensional (3D) solution environment. On a surface, N-doping mediates the formation of hydrogen-bonded GNR sheets. In solution, sheets of side-by-side coordinated GNRs can in turn assemble via van der Waals and π-stacking interactions into 3D stacks, a process that ultimately produces macroscopic crystalline structures. The optoelectronic properties of these semiconducting GNR crystals are determined entirely by those of the individual nanoscale constituents, which are tunable by varying their width, edge orientation, termination, and so forth. The atomically precise bottom-up synthesis of bulk quantities of basic nanoribbon units and their subsequent self-assembly into crystalline structures suggests that the rapidly developing toolset of organic and polymer chemistry can be harnessed to realize families of novel carbon-based materials with engineered properties.

The design of artificial molecular machines often takes inspiration from macroscopic machines. However, the parallels between the two systems are often only superficial, because most molecular machines are governed by quantum processes. Previously, rotary molecular motors powered by light and chemical energy have been developed. In electrically driven motors, tunnelling electrons from the tip of a scanning tunnelling microscope have been used to drive the rotation of a simple rotor in a single direction and to move a four-wheeled molecule across a surface. Here, we show that a stand-alone molecular motor adsorbed on a gold surface can be made to rotate in a clockwise or anticlockwise direction by selective inelastic electron tunnelling through different subunits of the motor. Our motor is composed of a tripodal stator for vertical positioning, a five-arm rotor for controlled rotations, and a ruthenium atomic ball bearing connecting the static and rotational parts. The directional rotation arises from sawtooth-like rotational potentials, which are solely determined by the internal molecular structure and are independent of the surface adsorption site.

The place of steroids in the management of severe forms of dengue is unclear. A retrospective observational study showed the benefits of a single dose of intravenous methyl prednisolone in a highly selected group of patients who developed severe dengue during the febrile phase of infection. We report the case of a 14-year-old boy with dengue who developed three episodes of severe hemodynamic compromise while having high fever, 'myocarditis', third space fluid accumulation, progressive reduction in urine output, and altered mentation, who made a dramatic recovery following a single dose of intravenous methyl prednisolone. Results justify a well powered randomized controlled trial to evaluate the efficacy of this treatment in severe dengue.

RESUMEN

An extensive redistribution of spin density in TBrPP-Co molecules adsorbed on a Cu(111) surface is investigated by monitoring Kondo resonances at different locations on single molecules. Remarkably, the width of the Kondo resonance is found to be much larger on the organic ligands than on the central cobalt atom-reflecting enhanced spin-electron interactions on molecular orbitals. This unusual effect is explained by means of first-principles and numerical renormalization-group calculations highlighting the possibility to engineer spin polarization by exploiting interfacial charge transfer.

Electron donor-acceptor molecular charge transfer complexes (CTCs) formed by alpha-sexithiophene (6T) and tetrafluoro-tetracyano-quinodimethane (F4TCNQ) on a Au(111) surface are investigated by scanning tunneling microscopy, spectroscopy, and spectroscopic imaging at 6 K. New hybrid molecular orbitals are formed in the CTCs, and the highest occupied molecular orbital of the CTC is mainly located on the electron accepting F4TCNQ while the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital is predominantly positioned on the electron donating 6T. We observed the conductance switching of F4TCNQ inside CTCs, which may find potential applications in novel molecular device operations.

There have been several mass grave excavations in Sri Lanka during the period of 1995 to 1998. Excavation of mass graves in the Chemmani area of northern peninsula of the country took place in September 1999, after about 5 years of the incident. Six graves with 1 to 6 bodies in each were identified and excavated in accordance with archaeological methods modified to suit the requirements of forensic exhumations. The experience gathered from excavation of those sites revealed the importance of archaeological methods in mass grave exhumations. For the first time in our forensic history, services of archaeologists and soil experts were used in the Chemmani exhumation. Their knowledge was found useful in locating the pit, pedestalling, and collection of human remains without causing any damage and artefacts, and in recording of the data.
