RESUMEN

The interest in 2D materials continues to grow across numerous scientific disciplines as compounds with unique electrical, optical, chemical, and thermal characteristics are being discovered. All these properties are governed by an all-surface nature and nanoscale confinement, which can easily be altered by extrinsic influences, such as defects, dopants or strain, adsorbed molecules, and contaminants. Here, we report on the ubiquitous presence of polymeric adlayers on top of layered transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs). The atomically thin layers, not evident from common analytic methods, such as Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), or scanning electron microscopy (SEM), could be identified with highly resolved time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (TOF-SIMS). The layers consist of hydrocarbons, which preferentially adsorb to the hydrophobic van der Waals surfaces of TMDs, derived from the most common methods. Fingerprint fragmentation patterns enable us to identify certain polymers and link them to those used during preparation and storage of the TMDs. The ubiquitous presence of polymeric films on 2D materials has wide reaching implications for their investigation, processing, and applications. In this regard, we reveal the nature of polymeric residues after commonly used transfer procedures on MoS2 films and investigate several annealing procedures for their removal.

RESUMEN

Rabi splitting between the longitudinal plasmon of a gold nano-bipyramid and the A exciton of monolayer MoS2 is observed at room temperature. The dependence of the Rabi splitting on the physical dimensions of the nano-bipyramid is reported. The impact of bipyramid length, aspect ratio, and tip radius on the coupling strength is investigated. The mode volume of the nanoresonator is significantly reduced because of the sharp tips of the bipyramid, and the Rabi splitting increases with tip sharpness. The results also reveal that greater Rabi splitting is observed for larger bipyramids, contrasting with results previously reported for different nanoresonator shapes. This shows, for the first time, how the magnitude of the splitting has a different response for particular nanoresonators when tuning the size, without increasing the number of excitons coupled into the system. The Rabi splitting, at zero energy detuning between plasmon and A exciton, increases from ∼55 meV with a 70 nm-long bipyramid to ∼80 meV with a 100 nm-long bipyramid. The increase in coupling strength with size arises because of increasing confinement of the field enhancement at the bipyramid tip.

We report the first observation of a gate-controlled field emission current from a tungsten diselenide (WSe2) monolayer, synthesized by chemical-vapour deposition on a SiO2/Si substrate. Ni contacted WSe2 monolayer back-gated transistors, under high vacuum, exhibit n-type conduction and drain-bias dependent transfer characteristics, which are attributed to oxygen/water desorption and drain induced Schottky barrier lowering, respectively. The gate-tuned n-type conduction enables field emission, i.e. the extraction of electrons by quantum tunnelling, even from the flat part of the WSe2 monolayers. Electron emission occurs under an electric field ∼100 V µm-1 and exhibits good time stability. Remarkably, the field emission current can be modulated by the back-gate voltage. The first field-emission vertical transistor based on the WSe2 monolayer is thus demonstrated and can pave the way to further optimize new WSe2 based devices for use in vacuum electronics.

RESUMEN

We study the effect of polymer coating, pressure, temperature, and light on the electrical characteristics of monolayer WSe 2 back-gated transistors with Ni / Au contacts. Our investigation shows that the removal of a layer of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) or a decrease of the pressure change the device conductivity from p- to n-type. From the temperature behavior of the transistor transfer characteristics, a gate-tunable Schottky barrier at the contacts is demonstrated and a barrier height of ~ 70 meV in the flat-band condition is measured. We also report and discuss a temperature-driven change in the mobility and the subthreshold swing that is used to estimate the trap density at the WSe 2 / SiO 2 interface. Finally, from studying the spectral photoresponse of the WSe 2 , it is proven that the device can be used as a photodetector with a responsivity of ~ 0.5   AW - 1 at 700   nm and 0.37   mW / cm 2 optical power.

The key steps of a transfer of two-dimensional (2D) materials are the delamination of the as-grown material from a growth substrate and the lamination of the 2D material on a target substrate. In state-of-the-art transfer experiments, these steps remain very challenging, and transfer variations often result in unreliable 2D material properties. Here, it is demonstrated that interfacial water can insert between graphene and its growth substrate despite the hydrophobic behavior of graphene. It is understood that interfacial water is essential for an electrochemistry-based graphene delamination from a Pt surface. Additionally, the lamination of graphene to a target wafer is hindered by intercalation effects, which can even result in graphene delamination from the target wafer. For circumvention of these issues, a direct, support-free graphene transfer process is demonstrated, which relies on the formation of interfacial water between graphene and its growth surface, while avoiding water intercalation between graphene and the target wafer by using hydrophobic silane layers on the target wafer. The proposed direct graphene transfer also avoids polymer contamination (no temporary support layer) and eliminates the need for etching of the catalyst metal. Therefore, recycling of the growth template becomes feasible. The proposed transfer process might even open the door for the suggested atomic-scale interlocking-toy-brick-based stacking of different 2D materials, which will enable a more reliable fabrication of van der Waals heterostructure-based devices and applications.

The Youth Anxiety Measure for DSM-5 (YAM-5) is a newly developed rating scale for assessing anxiety disorder symptoms of children and adolescents in terms of the contemporary classification system. In the present study, 187 children aged 8-12 years completed the new measure as well as the trait version of the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory for Children (STAIC), the Short Form of the Fear Survey Schedule for Children-Revised (FSSC-R-SF), the Spence Children's Anxiety Scale (SCAS), the Selective Mutism Questionnaire (SMQ), and the Children's Depression Inventory (CDI). Results indicated that part one of the YAM-5, which measures symptoms of the major anxiety disorders, was most substantially linked with the trait anxiety scale of the STAIC, whereas part two, which measures phobic symptoms, was most clearly associated with the FSSC-R-SF. The correlation between the YAM-5 and the SCAS was also robust, and particularly strong correlations were found between subscales of both questionnaires that assessed similar symptoms. Further, the selective mutism subscale of the YAM-5 was most clearly linked to the SMQ. Finally, the YAM-5 was also significantly correlated with depression symptoms as indexed by the CDI. These findings provide further support for the concurrent validity of the YAM-5.
