RESUMEN
Experimental results are presented from vacuum-ultraviolet free-electron laser (FEL) operating in the self-amplified spontaneous emission (SASE) mode. The generation of ultrashort radiation pulses became possible due to specific tailoring of the bunch charge distribution. A complete characterization of the linear and nonlinear modes of the SASE FEL operation was performed. At saturation the FEL produces ultrashort pulses (30-100 fs FWHM) with a peak radiation power in the GW level and with full transverse coherence. The wavelength was tuned in the range of 95-105 nm.
RESUMEN
Cotton (Gossypium hirsutum) fibers are single-celled seed coat hairs that elongate up to 2mm per day during a phase of rapid growth. Recent evidence suggests this growth is orchestrated by a series of events which includes temporary closure of plasmodesmata.

Campaniform sensilla (CS) of the locust proximal leg segments are arranged predominantly as homologous groups on the trochantera and femora. Their number is reduced in the more specialized jumping legs. The specific projections of the primary afferent axons from single groups of CS are visualized after backfilling them with CoCl2 introduced through the dendritic area in the cuticle. The majority of central branching patterns reveal a high degree of uniformity if compared within a population, between populations of one segment, and between populations of different legs. All projections bifurcate close to the peripheral root of the leg nerve and are restricted to the ipsilateral hemiganglion of the segments. These projections seem to differ in their extent more or less from those campaniform sensilla in other parts of the locust and in other insects.

The fatigue response of PMMA-specimen was tested under cyclic bending of 1.5 Hz in a particularly designed testing device. Specimen were tested that a "Wöhler" curve and the corresponding fatigue strength could be evaluated. The fatigue strength was reached after a comparatively short time and ranged in the order of 33 per cent of static breaking strength.

The stresses that occur between femoral head and cup in a total human hip joint prosthesis are especially calculated for the running-in phase when transition takes place between the Hertzian stress distribution and the stress distribution caused by wear. It turns out that the Hertzian stress distribution has already altered considerably after nearly 1 year of wear.
