RESUMEN

AIM: To catch a representative view of a multicultural population's needs. DESIGN: Qualitative study. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were conducted from July 2022 to January 2023 with the project's stakeholders, migrants, and residents. Data analysis was performed using a multimethod textual analysis technique. FINDINGS: Territorial barriers, lack of social network, and specific professionals' training emerged as healthcare delivery obstacles. For migrants, language improvement emerged as a health priority. A deep relationship with migrants emerged as a deficiency for residents. CONCLUSION: A welcoming project equipped with solid leadership and the right resources can be fundamental in mediating health promotion and integration. In this process, the involvement of the resident population is essential. IMPLICATIONS FOR THE PROFESSION AND/OR PATIENT CARE: Analysing the migrants' needs and the strengths and limitations of a reception system could help identify the challenges for professionals in delivering culturally competent care. In this context, the nurse's role becomes relevant, being responsible for taking charge and caring for the population and the link between professionals and the population. WHAT PROBLEM DID THE STUDY ADDRESS?: The study addressed the problem of improving the overall health of migrants, refugees, and asylum seekers, mainly focusing on reception and integration into a new society process. WHAT WERE THE MAIN FINDINGS?: Worse health was identified with adaptation, integration, and family problems. Territorial barriers emerged, hindering good health. WHERE AND ON WHOM WILL THE RESEARCH HAVE AN IMPACT?: These research findings can be valuable for health professionals who want to improve the reception process and enhance a care model integrated with residents. PATIENT OR PUBLIC CONTRIBUTION: No patient or public contribution. REPORTING METHOD: To describe the research report, we referred to the COREQ checklist (Tong et al., 2007).

RESUMEN

In recent years, the increase in textual data production has meant that researchers require faster text analysis techniques and software to reliably produce knowledge for the scientific-nursing community. Automatic text data analysis opens the frontiers to a new research area combining the depth of analysis typical of qualitative research and the stability of measurements required for quantitative studies. Thanks to the statistical-computational approach, it proposes to study more or less extensive written texts produced in natural language to reveal lexical and linguistic worlds and extract useful and meaningful information for researchers. This article aims to provide an overview of this methodology, which has been rarely used in the nursing community to date.

RESUMEN

Qualitative research is fundamental to understanding the nature and complexity of human phenomena. While cultural and psychometric validations exist for quantitative tools, the same cannot be said of qualitative ones. There are other many challenges when conducting a multinational qualitative study, which includes different cultural and linguistic 'biases'. This paper presents some key issues that researchers may encounter when designing and developing multinational and multicultural qualitative studies, and also provides some strategies to overcome difficulties and ensure rigour.

RESUMEN

AIMS: To describe the image of the female Licensed Nurse in Italy as promoted by the Fascist party from 1939-1943 and to understand how gender stereotypes influenced the construction of this image. DESIGN: Mixed methods design. METHOD: The study started in 2016 and ended in 2019. In the qualitative phase, the primary source was analysis, following Chabod's historical method (2012), while the quantitative phase involved statistical analysis of textual data. DATA SOURCES: All data came from the only nursing category magazine of the time: 'L'Infermiera Italiana' (The Italian Nurse), published from 1939-1943. RESULTS: From 112 articles analysed, the gradual elevation of the nurse emerged, including the partial replacement of 'old' nurses with Graduate Nurses. The analysis shows the maturation in structure, differentiation and specification, together with the birth of a new professional image. The accepted image of the nurse was now a woman of high moral character with religious ideals, but less known for her technical skills, an exception being the Visiting Health Assistant who functioned at a high level in the society. CONCLUSIONS: The study shows an articulated, congruent and cohesive set of dimensions through which to review history and to understand the dynamics underlying the structuring of the nurse's professional image. IMPACT: A better understanding of the dynamics behind the development of the professional image will guide present and future actions on gender stereotypes and their negative effects on the safety and quality of nursing care. International synergies and alliances are required.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: Decision-making on artificial nutrition and hydration for patients terminally ill with cancer can be influenced by nurses' knowledge, attitudes, and behavioral intentions. A comprehensive 57-item questionnaire including six sections on the knowledge, attitudes, and behavioral intentions in providing artificial nutrition and hydration to patients terminally ill with cancer has been developed and used in Taiwan. However, the questionnaire needs further psychometric testing and adaptation for other cultures. This study aimed to cross-culturally adapt the questionnaire within the Italian cultural context and test its psychometric properties. METHODS: The questionnaire was translated into Italian and cross-culturally adapted per the recommendations by Beaton. A panel of 10 experts assessed content validity. A multicenter cross-sectional study was conducted with 411 nurses to test its psychometric properties. Dimensionality and construct validity were assessed through exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses. Reliability was estimated by composite ω and traditional methods, such as the Kuder Richardson formula-20 and Cronbach's α coefficients. RESULTS: The overall content validity index was 0.85. A confirmatory factor analysis was conducted for the knowledge section and the four attitudes sections. A preliminary analysis for the behavioral intentions section yielded non acceptable results. The internal consistency of the scales was adequate (range, 0.64-0.93). CONCLUSIONS: This study constituted a notable advancement in the psychometric testing of the tool, and provides evidence that the Italian version of the questionnaire has acceptable psychometric characteristics for the sections on knowledge and attitudes.

RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: Military corps have always been supported by healthcare providers who took care of the injured and sick soldiers. Traditionally the military nurse's figure has never been fully appreciated to the point that, even nowadays, it is still searching for its own identity. AIM: The aim of the study is to describe the military nurse's role from the Second War for Italian Independence (1859) to the conquest of Rome (1870). METHODS: Historical investigation. Secondary sources were consulted to carry out a geopolitical and historical contextualization of the reference period, while to trace the military nurse's evolution the team referred to primary sources. All the mentioned sources were analyzed according to Chabod's methodology (2012). RESULTS: The military nurse was born as a corpsman. The Risorgimento wars contributed to highlight the major contribution that nurses could give to military healthcare. In 1863 the Ministry of War elaborated a new and innovative profile for military nurses which foresaw particular physical and moral requirements, but also specific competences. Even though a new ideal of nurse was created, the Military Nurses Corp did not experience any changes: the nurses' activities remained transporting the injured and assisting doctors. CONCLUSIONS: Primary sources analysis highlighted an important attention towards the military nurse's role and education after national unity, although the gap shown by the military healthcare service during the Risorgimento battles was evident. Such condition facilitated the development of the first rescue committees which became, at a later time, the International Red Cross. The committees popularity allowed the volunteers to gain higher fame and social prestige than military nurses.
