RESUMEN

The new Magnet Model for the Magnet Recognition Program describes the domain of "new knowledge, innovations, and improvements". This domain has the potential to provide the momentum and be the impetus for the forward motion needed to make major contributions in the advancement of professional nursing. There are many models supporting the advancement of practice to achieve "new knowledge, innovations and improvements". Ochsner Medical Center, a Magnet-designated facility in New Orleans partnered with Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center School of Nursing to create the Joint Center for Nursing Research. Outcomes of the partnership demonstrate their contributions to "new knowledge, innovations, and improvements".

RESUMEN

Systems comprising more than one organization at some point think about whether or not to pursue Magnet recognition for each individual organization or as a system. There are several considerations when making this decision in each of the Model Components for the Magnet Recognition Program. Magnet recognition is not a checklist of achievements, but rather an enculturation of values, standards, vision, commitment, and pride. It is important to remember that each organization is different and is at a different place in their development at any one time. Making the decision to pursue system Magnet recognition should consider all important factors since if one organization in the system doesn't make the grade, the system is not Magnet recognized.

RESUMEN

The Annual ANCC Magnet Conferences provide an atmosphere of learning, celebration, and recognition. At the 11th Annual Conference in 2007, those attending could choose from a variety of programs, visit exhibits, watch film clips from different organizations, view art displays, connect with 4,700 others and most of all, celebrate. Capturing the culture of this celebration and channeling the energy of nurses into creating solutions and a new view of nursing are vital to our recruitment and retention efforts.

RESUMEN

The Unit Practice Council (UPC) is the heart of unit-based activity. There are any number of UPCs in an organization, but Jackson Health System in Miami, FL, has organized 93 UPCs in their 2,200 licensed bed system. There are several points of support for the UPC that Jackson uses including a UPC orientation, guidelines to write a charter, and an implementation guide. Another strong support for the UPC is the use of an external (to the unit) facilitator to help keep the UPC on track and to support the continued contributions of the parts of the system to the whole. Outcomes of the UPCs include improved patient and staff satisfaction, improved quality outcomes, and cost savings to the organization.

RESUMEN

Many programs have been invented or re-invented to help cope with nursing shortages. Although re-entry is not a new program, most are thought not to be successful. Emory Hospitals in Atlanta, Georgia designed a Re-entry Program in 2000 that is still in place and has had 105 nurses successfully complete the program.
