INTRODUCTION: Scoliosis is a complex three-dimensional malformation of the spine. Although its etiology is still being investigated, it is clear that a number of factors can influence this syndrome. The spinal deformity of idiopathic scoliosis can be viewed from an etiopathogenetic perspective as a symptom of a complicated condition with a multifactorial etiology. Numerous studies have established its relationship with malocclusion, but it is still unclear how these factors interact. Malocclusion is a change in the physiological alignment of the upper and lower teeth that can be either dental or skeletal in origin. This study's objective is to assess the relationship between scoliosis and malocclusion. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 646 patients were enrolled (554 females and 92 males), 447 with scoliosis and 199 without, from private dental and orthopedic practices, to answer an anonymous questionnaire. They were selected in private dental and orthopedic practices where they had dental and orthopedic examinations. Twenty-two patients were excluded because of a lack of answers. Participants were given a bilingual survey, in English and Italian, composed of 13 questions formulated specifically for this study, using Google Forms (Google LLC, Mountain View, CA, USA). RESULTS: Univariate analysis of the question "Do you have scoliosis?" shows a significant correlation with the following questions: "Was scoliosis a family issue?" (p < 0.05 OR 7.30 IC: 3.05-17.46) "Do you have malocclusion?" (p < 0.05, OR: 1.19 IC:1.0-1.34) and "Was mal-occlusion a family issue?" (p < 0.01, OR: 1.39 IC 1.10-1.77). Performing a multivariate analysis for the same variables, the best predictors of scoliosis were "Was scoliosis a family issue?" (p < 0.001) and "Was malocclusion a family issue?" (p < 0.05), while the question "Do you have malocclusion" lost significance. CONCLUSION: This study adds further confirmation that there might be an important connection between malocclusion and scoliosis; it suggests that dentists and orthopedists have to check, as early as possible, for the probable presence of both pathologies to avoid a severe progression which, in most cases, may require significant therapy and even surgery.

Coronavirus disease 2019 represents the pandemic of the 21st century that has negatively affected the lives of the whole of humanity. For many months, the only weapons to fight against this infection were protective masks and social isolation. During recent months, fear of the virus has led people to avoid crowded environments and events, and to reduce medical checks, limiting them only to emergencies. Outpatient clinics, doctors' offices, and all closed-in environments were required to limit the patients' access. Nowadays, the presence of specific protocols around the world, and the extended vaccination campaign, have allowed a reduction of many restrictions. Unfortunately, the virus is still widespread, and dental practice and dental treatments suffer the consequences. Dental therapies in general, and in particular orthodontics, are not considered lifesaving. Due to this, orthodontists, in this historical time, must find solutions for motivating patients to start or continue therapies, while providing a safe way for them to do so. There are orthodontists who have developed, during this period, different ways to help them in treating and communicating with patients. Aim: The aim of this study is to assess the influence of the pandemic on the choice to start orthodontic treatment, oral health care, and the importance placed on the appearance of dental occlusions. Materials and Methods: This study is a survey analysis of 159 people, which was posted in Facebook groups of adult orthodontic patients. The timestamps and answers of responses were analyzed to avoid duplicated or interrupted questionnaires. Conclusions: This study found that the current health emergency has not reduced the demand for orthodontic care, while some patients' behaviors are changing in relation to oral hygiene and the importance that they attribute to dental health. It seems that dentists' availability plays a key role in this period of sanitary emergency.

Risk of fall (ROF) is a worldwide major concern for its prevalence and consequent dramatic outcomes in the elderly population. The growing age-related risk appears to be associated with increasing motor, sensory, and cognitive problems in the elderly population. There is a consensus on the need to screen for these balance dysfunctions, but the available methods are largely based on subjectively assessed performances. The instrumented Romberg test using a force plate represents a validated assessment process for the evaluation of balance performances. The purpose of this study is to propose an innovative instrumental method to identify balance deficits, assess their severity, and give an automated indication of the most likely etiology. The proposed new method was applied to the instrumented Romberg test, using force plate data recorded in a cohort of 551 females aged >65 participating in adapted physical activity courses. The method allowed us to identify 145 dysfunctional subjects and to determine the likely origin of their deficit: 21 central, 5 vestibular, 9 visual, 59 proprioceptive (musculoskeletal etiology), and 51 functional. Based on the preliminary findings of the study, this test could be an efficient and cost-effective mass screening tool for identifying subjects at risk of fall, since the procedure proves to be rapid, non-invasive, and apparently devoid of any contraindications.

Temporomandibular disorders are multi-factorial conditions that are caused by both physical and psychological factors. It has been well established that stress triggers or worsens TMDs. This paper looks to present early research, still unfolding, on the relationship between COVID-19 as a major life stressor and TMDs. The main aims of this study were to: investigate the presence of symptoms related to TMDs and the time of onset and the worsening of painful symptoms in relation to the changes in social life imposed by the coronavirus pandemic; and to evaluate the perception of COVID-19 as a major stressful event in subjects who report worsening of painful TMD symptoms. One hundred and eighty-two subjects answered questionnaires-Axis II of the RDC/TMD, the PSS, and specific items about coronavirus as a stressful event-during the lockdown period for COVID-19 in Italy to evaluate the presence of reported symptoms of TMD and the level of depression, somatization, and stress perceived. The results showed that 40.7% of subjects complained about TMD symptoms in the past month. Regarding the time of onset, 60.8% of them reported that facial pain started in the last three months, while 51.4% of these subjects reported that their symptoms worsened in the last month and were related to the aggravation of pain due to the coronavirus lockdown as a major life event and to the stress experienced. The results of this study seem to support the hypothesis that stress during the pandemic lockdown influenced the onset of temporomandibular joint disorders and facial pain, albeit with individual responses.

Osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) has been demonstrated to be an effective therapy in several clinical conditions and age groups. Despite the clinical effectiveness, lack of robust data in terms of neurobiological, specifically autonomic, mechanisms of action is observed. Preliminary studies showed a parasympathetic effect leading to a trophotropic effect of OMT. However, these data are limited to heart rate variability (HRV) analysis. In order to study further the role of OMT on the autonomic nervous system, a cross-over randomized controlled trial RCT has been designed to test the effect of osteopathic treatment compared to sham therapy on a range of autonomic parameters. Thermal images, HRV and skin conductance data were collected on a sample of healthy adults. The study design consisted of two sessions (OMT and SHAM), 1 treatment per week, lasting 35 min each, composed of 5 min of baseline, 25 min of treatment, and 5 min of post-touch. During the baseline and the post-treatment, participants received no touch. Thirty-seven participants (aged 27 ± 5 years old, male ratio 40%) completed the study. Multivariate analysis showed a significant parasympathetic effect of group as well as of epoch on thermographic data of the nose (estimate 0.38; 95% CI 0.12-0.63; p < 0.01), left (0.17; 0.06-0.27; <0.001) and right (0.16; 0.07-0.24; <0.001) perioral as well as on the forehead (0.07; 0.01-0.12; <0.01) regions but not for the chin (0.08; -0.02 to 0.18; 0.13). Consistent with a parasympathetic effect, analyses demonstrated a difference between OMT and sham groups on the nuHF (p < 0.001) and DFA-a1 (p < 0.01) as well as on skin conductance (<0.01). The present research supports the hypothesis that a single session of OMT as compared to sham induces autonomic consequences in healthy non-symptomatic adults. Swallowing dysfunction is a frequent disorder among children and refers to an altered tongue posture and abnormal tongue movement during swallowing. Removable functional appliance is one of the treatments applied by dentistry to correct this disorder. The aim of this study was to evaluate any differences on orofacial muscles activity in children with swallowing dysfunction with and without removable functional appliances. 68 children were eligible for the study and divided into the orthodontic group (OG) and the no-orthodontic group (NO-OG). Both groups performed a dental occlusion-class evaluation, a swallowing function test and a myoscan analysis in order to measure perioral forces (i.e. tongue extension force, lip pressure, masseter contraction force). Our results showed a significant difference (P=0.02) between OG and NO-OG for the tongue extension force, whereas no significant differences (P>0.05) were found for the other parameters. Our findings suggest that children with swallowing dysfunction and removable functional appliance show orofacial muscles activity within the range of reference values (except for the lip pressure). However, we hypothesize that orthodontic treatment can achieve more effective results with integration of myofunctional therapy.

Klippel-Feil syndrome is a congenital malformation characterized by the fusion of at least 2 cervical vertebrae. It may occur in association with other clinical syndromes and disorders. We describe a case of prenatal diagnosis of a Klippel-Feil syndrome with Dandy-Walker malformation, and spina bifida, proved by ultrasound examination. A postmortem x-ray and autopsy were performed in a female fetus of 16 + 6 weeks of gestation: several malformations have been discovered. To the best of our knowledge, no similar cases have been reported in the medical literature. This case report underscores the importance of a careful ultrasound screening during pregnancy for an adequate diagnostic and therapeutic management.

Partial trisomy of the long arm of chromosome 1 is a relatively rare cytogenetic anomaly. Its phenotype has still not been completely defined, because of the cytogenetic heterogeneity of the cases so far described. We report a prenatal case of partial 1q trisomy associated with partial monosomy 4q, secondary to balanced maternal translocation t(1;4). The trisomic segment extended from 1q31.1 to qter and the monosomy 4q was from 4q35.2 to qter. The phenotypic anomalies found by post-mortem and autopsy examinations were compared with those of similar cases reported in the literature. We performed standard cytogenetics and fluorescence in situ hybridization. Cerebral ventriculomegaly, present in our case, seemed to be a constant feature in partial 1q trisomies, so this cerebral malformation could be considered as the main echographic marker for this chromosomal imbalance and trisomy 1q should be added to the list of chromosomal abnormalities associated with ventriculomegaly.

Cadmium is a heavy metal dangerous for the environment and for the human health, with well shown carcinogenic potentiality. Many studies have related the professional exposure of the Cadmium with human pulmonary, prostatic and renal tumors, and it would be a role also in the tumors of the liver, of the hemopoietic system, of the bladder and of the stomach. The aim of the current study is to examine in normal and neoplastic fibroblasts culture cells the modifications induced by the Cadmium at cellular level, in particular on the cytoskeleton, responsible not only of the intracellular transport of vesicles and cell organules, but also of their positioning and of the cellular integrity. Two fibroblastic cellular strains, normal (FG) and neoplastic (SGS/3A), have been incubated in a 5 microM Cadmium acetate added medium for 1, 8, 24 hours and studied by indirect immunofluorescence methods, particularly for the following proteins: Actin, Tubulin and Vimentin. The observations show in normal and neoplastic fibroblasts comparables modifications and anomalies of cytoskeletal shape. In both the cases the cellular morphology suffers drastic modifications, gradually evolving through intermediary shapes: from triangular and spindle-shaped in the normal fibroblasts to irregular, star-shaped, and globular in the neoplastic ones. The Cadmium action on the morphology of the normal and tumoral cells changes according to the time of incubation, producing structural alterations of the cytoskeletal. The modifications that start to be observable at the first hour of incubation are more evident after the eighth hour of exposure, reaching the maximum expression at the twenty-fourth hour, often with reduction of the total volume of the cells and loss of their ability to adhere to the substratum. Such modifications can be related to great alterations of the cellular membrane, producing the change of shape and the progressive partial separation from the substratum. The intermediary filaments seem to be less sensitive, from a morphological but not functional point of view, to the action of the Cadmium in comparison to the Actin and the microtubules that, on the contrary, seem to lose their proper morphological characteristics.
