RESUMEN

Spring staging Greater White-fronted Geese Anser albifrons have increasingly shifted from traditional diverse grassland fields to monocultures of winter cereals, causing conflict with farmers. To account for this transition, we tested two key predictions, controlling for goose age effects and sward height. Firstly, that cereal is better quality than grass (based on crude protein content). Secondly, that geese show higher peck rate and step rate on grassland than cereal, enabling them to compensate for lower, less selective intake rates there compared to the uniform, dense, high quality arable sward where all blades are equally of high profitability. Laboratory analyses showed that winter cereal had 27 % higher crude protein content than grass. Based on data extracted from video sequences of spring foraging geese in NE Poland, first-year birds ("immatures") showed significantly higher peck rates and step rates than adults in all situations, likely reflecting their less efficient foraging abilities. Both age classes showed significantly higher peck rates on grass than winter cereal as predicted. Combining differential protein content and lamina length/dry weight relationships of grass versus cereal showed that geese obtained 17-33 % more protein from cereal lamina of the same length. At observed peck rates, this equated to a 6 % greater hourly crude protein intake rate on cereals compared to grass at lamina length 2.5 cm, increasing to 29 % difference at 12.5 cm. Hence, at longer swards, cereals become increasingly profitable for foraging geese over grass swards, despite the higher peck rates observed on grass which failed to compensate for lower lamina quality. We contend that these interactions explain the simultaneous attraction of cereal over grass swards in this study area and likely elsewhere and we discuss the management implications of these findings.

Food wastes are among the factors with the greatest effects on animal populations. The white stork is among bird species that clearly profit from feeding at landfills, at least in Western Europe and North Africa. However, the rate and the consequences of this feeding are still unknown in the Central-Eastern European population, which differs from the western population not only in terms of migration routes but also in the greater availability of suitable natural breeding habitats due to less intensified agriculture. The aim of the study was to describe the use of landfills and its consequences in terms of probability of nest occupation and breeding effects in different regions of Poland. Although the most important factors influencing nest-site selection and breeding effect are still habitat quality and weather conditions, distance to landfills is important in selection of nest sites. White storks use landfills most intensively late in the breeding season, independently of the density of breeding pairs. The results suggest that the use of landfills is not currently essential in the Central-Eastern European population of the white stork, does not affect breeding effect, and may be more frequent in non-breeders. However, this phenomenon is still developing and requires continuous monitoring.

Avian eye colour changes with age, but many aspects of this transition are still insufficiently understood. We examined if an individual's sex, age, species and body condition are related to the iris colour in common migratory passerines during their autumn passage through Central Europe. A total of 1,399 individuals from nine numerous species were ringed and examined in late autumn in northern Poland. Each individual was sexed by plumage (if possible) and assigned to one of three classes of the iris colour-typical for immatures, typical for adults and intermediate. We found that the iris was typical in 97.7% cases of immatures and in 75.8% cases of adults and this difference was significant. Species, sex and body mass index (BMI) had no significant influence on the iris colour. We show that iris colour in passerines in late autumn is strongly age-dependent and thus can serve as a reliable feature for ageing in field studies, especially in species difficult to age by plumage.

Urban and rural habitats provide different conditions to wintering birds mainly due to different access to bird feeders. Returning to the food sources, even under the stress related to trapping, could play an important role in the energetic budget of wintering birds. We studied the duration of period between the first and the second capture of the Great Tits (Parus major) caught and ringed at bird feeders. We expected that recapturing of birds, which could be connected with their experience, would depend on their sex, age and on the size of human settlements (urban vs. rural areas), which could modify the behavior of wintering birds. We found that the length of the period was the shortest for immature females and the longest for adult males (the difference being 3.8 days in average). In contrast to more experienced adults, more frequent visits in case of immature tits, which increased probability of being trapped, could be affected by their weaker condition and smaller size, which resulted in feeding whenever it was possible. At the same time we did not find any differences between urban (duration of 29.5 days in average) and rural (28.5 days) areas. Differentiation in bird densities, access to feeders and various environmental factors seems to be the reason why this issue awaits further, more detailed studies including influence of weather on the behavior of birds.

Urban environments cover vast areas with a high density of humans and their dogs and cats causing problems for exploitation of new resources by wild animals. Such resources facilitate colonization by individuals with a high level of neophilia predicting that urban animals should show more neophilia than rural conspecifics. We provided bird-feeders across urban environments in 14 Polish cities and matched nearby rural habitats, testing whether the presence of a novel item (a brightly coloured green object made out of gum with a tuft of hair) differentially delayed arrival at feeders in rural compared to urban habitats. The presence of a novel object reduced the number of great tits Parus major, but also the total number of all species of birds although differentially so in urban compared to rural areas. That was the case independent of the potentially confounding effects of temperature, population density of birds, and the abundance of cats, dogs and pedestrians. The number of great tits and the total number of birds attending feeders increased in urban compared to rural areas independent of local population density of birds. This implies that urban birds have high levels of neophilia allowing them to readily exploit unpredictable resources in urban environments.

Urban development has a marked effect on the ecological and behavioural traits of many living organisms, including birds. In this paper, we analysed differences in the numbers of wintering birds between rural and urban areas in Poland. We also analysed species richness and abundance in relation to longitude, latitude, human population size, and landscape structure. All these parameters were analysed using modern statistical techniques incorporating species detectability. We counted birds in 156 squares (0.25 km2 each) in December 2012 and again in January 2013 in locations in and around 26 urban areas across Poland (in each urban area we surveyed 3 squares and 3 squares in nearby rural areas). The influence of twelve potential environmental variables on species abundance and richness was assessed with Generalized Linear Mixed Models, Principal Components and Detrended Correspondence Analyses. Totals of 72 bird species and 89,710 individual birds were recorded in this study. On average (± SE) 13.3 ± 0.3 species and 288 ± 14 individuals were recorded in each square in each survey. A formal comparison of rural and urban areas revealed that 27 species had a significant preference; 17 to rural areas and 10 to urban areas. Moreover, overall abundance in urban areas was more than double that of rural areas. There was almost a complete separation of rural and urban bird communities. Significantly more birds and more bird species were recorded in January compared to December. We conclude that differences between rural and urban areas in terms of winter conditions and the availability of resources are reflected in different bird communities in the two environments.

Bird feeding is one of the most widespread direct interactions between man and nature, and this has important social and environmental consequences. However, this activity can differ between rural and urban habitats, due to inter alia habitat structure, human behaviour and the composition of wintering bird communities. We counted birds in 156 squares (0.25 km(2) each) in December 2012 and again in January 2013 in locations in and around 26 towns and cities across Poland (in each urban area, we surveyed 3 squares and also 3 squares in nearby rural areas). At each count, we noted the number of bird feeders, the number of bird feeders with food, the type of feeders, additional food supplies potentially available for birds (bread offered by people, bins) and finally the birds themselves. In winter, urban and rural areas differ in the availability of food offered intentionally and unintentionally to birds by humans. Both types of food availability are higher in urban areas. Our findings suggest that different types of bird feeder support only those species specialized for that particular food type and this relationship is similar in urban and rural areas.
