RESUMEN

The hierarchization of zeolites to overcome the major drawbacks related to molecular diffusion limitation in micropores is a popular concept in heterogeneous catalysis. Despite the constant increase of new synthesis strategies to produce such hierarchical systems, the deep knowledge of their structural arrangement and how the zeolitic lattice is organized in a multilevel porous system is often missing. This information is essential to design a structure, tuning the porosity and the distribution of easily accessible active sites, and successively controlling the catalytic properties. In the present work, the synthesis of one of the most sophisticated forms of the hierarchical ZSM-5 zeolite has been reproduced, obtaining two multilevel porous materials with different crystallinity degrees, with the final aim of investigating and clarifying the finest features of their active sites. For this purpose, an extended characterization step by means of a unique multitechnique approach has been performed, thus revealing the active site nature, abundance, and distribution. IR spectroscopy with different molecular probes and a targeted catalytic test based on the hydroconversion reaction of n-decane were the toolbox for disclosing how the MFI lattice takes part in the hierarchical structure and how it, working in synergy with the mesoporous system, confers to this material a totally new shape-size selectivity. Merging the information obtained for the synthesized hierarchical zeolite with the characterization results of two reference materials (a mesoporous aluminum-containing MCM-41 and a microporous commercial ZSM-5), it was possible to define an internal and external map of the pore network of this complex and unique molecular sieve, where strong Brønsted acidic sites are located at the mouth of the MFI micropores and, at the same time, exposed at the surface of the mesoporous channels. Hence, the possibility of easily releasing bulky products is ensured and the application possibilities of the MFI lattice are expanded beyond cracking reactions.

Perovskite solar cells are a hot topic of photovoltaic research, reaching, in few years, an impressive efficiency (25.5%), but their long-term stability still needs to be addressed for industrial production. One of the most sizeable reasons for instability is the doping of the Hole Transporting Material (HTM), being the salt commonly employed as a vector bringing moisture in contact with perovskite film and destroying it. With this respect, the research focused on new and stable "dopant-free" HTMs, which are inherently conductive, being able to effectively work without any addition of dopants. Notwithstanding, they show impressive efficiency and stability results. The dopant-free polymers, often made of alternated donor and acceptor cores, have properties, namely the filming ability, the molecular weight tunability, the stacking and packing peculiarities, and high hole mobility in absence of any dopant, that make them very attractive and a real innovation in the field. In this review, we tried our best to collect all the dopant-free polymeric HTMs known so far in the perovskite solar cells field, providing a brief historical introduction, followed by the classification and analysis of the polymeric structures, based on their building blocks, trying to find structure-activity relationships whenever possible. The research is still increasing and a very simple polymer (PFDT-2F-COOH) approaches PCE = 22% while some more complex ones overcome 22%, up to 22.41% (PPY2).

Synthesis and characterization of 14 new 2,2'-bipyridine metal complexes fac-M(bpy-R)(CO)3X (where M = Mn, X = Br or M = Re, X = Cl and R = -CF3, -CN, -Ph, -PhOH, -NMe2) are reported. The complexes have been characterized by NMR, IR spectroscopy and elemental analysis. Single crystal X-Ray diffraction structures have been solved for Re(dpbpy)(CO)3Cl (dpbpy = 4,6-diphenyl-2,2'-bipyridine) and Re(hpbpy)(CO)3Cl (hpbpy = 4-(2-hydroxy-phenyl)-6-phenyl-2,2'-bipyridine). Electrochemical behaviors of the complexes in acetonitrile under Ar and their catalytic performances for CO2 reduction with added water and MeOH have been investigated by cyclic voltammetry and controlled potential electrolysis. The role of the substituents on the electrochemical properties and the related over potentials required for CO2 transformation have been analyzed. The complexes carrying only electron withdrawing groups like -CF3, -CN totally lose their catalytic activities toward CO2 reduction, whereas the symmetric -NMe2 substituted and push-pull systems (containing both -NMe2 and -CF3) still display electrocatalytic current enhancement under CO2 atmosphere. The complexes carrying a phenyl or a phenol group in position 4 show catalytic behaviors similar to those of simple M-bpy systems. The only detected reduction product by GC analysis is CO: for example, fac-Re (bpy-4,4'-NMe2)(CO)3Cl gives CO with high faradic efficiency and a TON of 18 and 31, in absence of external proton source and with 5% MeOH, respectively. DFT calculations were carried out to highlight the electronic properties of the complexes; results are in agreement with experimental electrochemical data.

Biological and thermodynamic properties of a new homologous series of highly fluorinated bispyridinium cationic gemini surfactants, differing in the length of the spacer bridging the pyridinium polar heads in 1,1' position, are reported for the first time. Interestingly, gene delivery ability is closely associated with the spacer length due to a structural change of the molecule in solution. This conformation change is allowed when the spacer reaches the right length, and it is suggested by the trends of the apparent and partial molar enthalpies vs molality. To assess the compounds' biological activity, they were tested with an agarose gel electrophoresis mobility shift assay (EMSA), MTT proliferation assay and Transient Transfection assays on a human rhabdomyosarcoma cell line. Data from atomic force microscopy (AFM) allow for morphological characterization of DNA nanoparticles. Dilution enthalpies, measured at 298K, enabled the determination of apparent and partial molar enthalpies vs molality. All tested compounds (except that with the longest spacer), at different levels, can deliver the plasmid when co-formulated with 1,2-dioleyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphoethanolamine (DOPE). The compound with a spacer formed by eight carbon atoms gives rise to a gene delivery ability that is comparable to that of the commercial reagent. The compound with the longest spacer compacts DNA in loosely condensed structures by forming bows, which are not suitable for transfection. Regarding the compounds' hydrogenated counterparts, the tight relationship between the solution thermodynamics data and their biological performance is amazing, making "old" methods the foundation to deeply understanding "new" applications.

Three novel thiophene substituted bipyridine ligands and their corresponding rhenium complexes were synthesized and tested for the electrocatalytic reduction of CO2. Two complexes underwent oxidative electropolymerization on a glassy carbon electrode (GCE) surface. The conductive polymers chemically deposited on the GCE allow electron transport from the surface to the polymer-attached rhenium catalytic center in contact with the solution. The chemically modified electrodes show significant catalytic activities for CO2 reduction, and moderate relative higher stabilities when compared with the homogeneous solution counterparts.

Terpyridine and quaterpyridine-based complexes allow wide light harvesting of the solar spectrum. Terpyridines, with respect to bipyridines, allow for achieving metal-complexes with lower band gaps in the metal-to-ligand transition (MLCT), thus providing a better absorption at lower energy wavelengths resulting in an enhancement of the solar light-harvesting ability. Despite the wider absorption of the first tricarboxylate terpyridyl ligand-based complex, Black Dye (BD), dye-sensitized solar cell (DSC) performances are lower if compared with N719 or other optimized bipyridine-based complexes. To further improve BD performances several modifications have been carried out in recent years affecting each component of the complexes: terpyridines have been replaced by quaterpyridines; other metals were used instead of ruthenium, and thiocyanates have been replaced by different pinchers in order to achieve cyclometalated or heteroleptic complexes. The review provides a summary on design strategies, main synthetic routes, optical and photovoltaic properties of terpyridine and quaterpyridine ligands applied to photovoltaic, and focuses on n-type DSCs.

RESUMEN

A microwave-assisted method for the preparation of a wide color range of 2,3,3-trimethylindolenine-based squaraines and their intermediates is described. This practical approach allows the rapid preparation of both symmetrical and nonsymmetrical squaraine dyes, reducing reaction time from days to minutes with more than 2-fold improvement in product yields when compared to conventional methods.

Titanium dioxide (TiO2) is widely used as ingredient in several products in the nanoform. TiO2-nanoparticles (NPs) are also currently studied for different medical applications. A large debate exists on possible adverse health effects related to their exposure. While there is some evidence of TiO2-NP central nervous system toxicity, their effects on peripheral neurons have been poorly explored. In this study we investigated the effects of TiO2-NPs on dorsal root ganglion (DRG) sensory neurons and satellite glial cells that may be reached by nanoparticles from the bloodstream. We found that TiO2-NPs are internalized in DRG cells and induce apoptosis in a dose dependent manner in both types of cells, ROS production and changes in expression of proinflammatory cytokine IL-1ß. Furthermore, we found that the axonal retrograde transport is altered in neurons upon exposure to TiO2-NPs. Overall, the results indicate a potential neurotoxic effect of TiO2-NPs on DRG cells. FROM THE CLINICAL EDITOR: Exposure to titanium dioxide nanoparticles is increasing in medical practice. Little is known about their potential toxic effects on the peripheral nervous system. The authors studied this aspect and showed that titanium nanoparticles might potentially cause toxicity over long term.

Pyridinium gemini surfactants with hexadecyl chains linked to nitrogen atoms and a tuned aliphatic spacer that bridges the two pyridinium polar heads in 2,2'-positions have been synthesized and characterized. A multitechnique approach allowed us to study the aggregation behavior, using conductivity, surface tension, and fluorescence. Graphs of the specific conductivity (κ) versus the surfactant molar concentration (C), and graphs of the molar conductivity (Λ) versus C0.5 suggest pre-aggregation phenomena of these amphiphiles at very low concentration. The trends of Amin as a function of the spacer length confirm the hypothesis of a conformational change of the molecule with four methylene groups as spacer owing to stacking interactions between the two pyridinium rings mediated by the counterion. Moreover, the trends of Amin and counterion binding (ß) suggest that the spacer must be longer than eight carbon atoms to fold efficiently toward the micellar core. The opportunity to tune the surfactant structure and aggregation properties make those surfactants-particularly the long-chain ones for which the DNA complexing ability was shown by means of atomic force microscopy (AFM) imaging-desirable candidates for gene-delivery experiments.

The interaction with a model membrane, the formation of DNA nanoparticles, and the transfection ability of a homologous series of bispyridinium dihexadecyl cationic gemini surfactants, differing in the length of the alkyl spacer bridging the two pyridinium polar heads in the 1 and 1' positions (P16-n with n = 3, 4, 8, 12), have been studied by means of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), atomic force microscopy, electrophoresis mobility shift assay, and transient transfection assay measurements. The results presented here show that their performance in gene delivery is strictly related to their structure in solution. For the first time the different transfection activities of the compounds can be explained by referring to their thermodynamic properties in solution, previously studied. The compound with a spacer formed by four carbon atoms, showing unexpected enthalpic properties vs concentration in solution, is the only one giving rise to a transfection activity comparable to that of the commercial reagent, when formulated with L-α-dioleoylphosphatidylethanolamine. We suggest that P16-4 behaves like molecular tongs able to grip basic groups near each other, allowing the formation of compact and nearly spherical DNA particles. The compound with the longest spacer gives rise to loosely condensed structures by forming a sort of bow, not able to give rise to transfection notwithstanding the double positive charge of the molecule. On the other hand, DSC measurements on synthetic membranes show that the compounds with the shortest spacers (three and four methylene groups) practically do not interact with the 1,2-dipalmitoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphatidylcholine membrane, while compounds P16-8 and, particularly, P16-12 induce the formation of surfactant-rich and surfactant-poor domains in the membrane, without showing any peculiarity for compound P16-4. This could suggest that the mechanisms involved in the interaction with the model membrane and in gene delivery are substantially different and could strike a blow for an endocytosis mechanism for the internalization in the cell of the DNA nanoparticles.

A series of pyridinium-based cationic surfactants has been synthesised and their amphiphilic properties have been studied by conductivity and surface tension measurements. The modification of the substitution pattern on the pyridinium ring by hydrophobic moieties (methyl vs. hydrogen and presence or not of condensed benzene ring) gave the opportunity to investigate structure-activity relationships. Characterization by conductivity and surface tension measurements shed light on the behaviour at the air/water interface and in the micellar environment. In particular, the tendency to form ion pairs at very low concentration was evidenced for all the surfactants substituted on the ring, but not for the simple pyridinium ones. The formation of ion pairs affects both the conductivity and the surface tension plots, showing that a series of steps is involved during the adsorption to the air/water surface. An attempt was made to qualify the single steps in the adsorption at the surface layer. Those steps were attributed to different chemical species (free surfactant ions or ion pairs) and to different arrangements of the surfactant. This work also represents a contribution of investigation at very low surfactant concentrations and high surface tension values.

Apparent and partial molar enthalpies at 298 K of the aqueous solutions of cationic gemini surfactants 1,1'-didodecyl-2,2'-dimethylenebispyridinium dimethanesulfonate (12-Py(2)-2-(2)Py-12 MS); 1,1'-didodecyl-2,2'-trimethylenebispyridinium dimethanesulfonate (12-Py(2)-3-(2)Py-12 MS); 1,1'-didodecyl-2,2'-tetramethylenebispyridinium dimethanesulfonate (12-Py(2)-4-(2)Py-12 MS); 1,1'-didodecyl-2,2'-octamethylenebispyridinium dimethanesulfonate (12-Py(2)-8-(2)Py-12 MS); 1,1'-didodecyl-2,2'-dodecamethylenebispyridinium dimethanesulfonate (12-Py(2)-12-(2)Py-12 MS) were measured as a function of concentration and are here reported for the first time. They show a very peculiar behavior as a function of the spacer length, not allowing for the determination of a -CH 2- group contribution when this group is added to the spacer. The curve of the compound with a four-carbon-atom-long spacer lies between those of the compound with a spacer of 2 and 3 carbon atoms, instead of that below the latter, as expected. This surprising behavior, never found before in the literature and different from that found for the more popular m- s- m-type bisquaternary ammonium gemini surfactants, could be explained by a conformation change of the molecule, caused by stacking interactions between the two pyridinium rings, mediated by the counterion and appearing at an optimum length of the spacer. The hypothesis is also supported by the data obtained from the surface tension vs log c curves, showing that A min, the minimum area taken at the air-water interface by the molecule, is significantly lower for 12-Py(2)-4-(2)Py-12 MS than that of the other compounds of the same homologous series, and that the same compound has a greater tendency to form micelles instead of adsorbing at the air/water interface. The evaluation of the micellization enthalpies, by means of a pseudophase transition model, agrees with the exposed trends. These results confirm the great crop of information that can be derived from the study of the solution thermodynamics of aggregate systems and in particular from the curves of apparent and molar enthalpies vs concentration.

Thermodynamic properties of aqueous solutions of newly synthesized compounds, namely, N-[2-(beta-D-glucopyranosyl)ethyl]-N,N-dimethyl-N-alkylammonium bromides with hydrophobic tails of 12 (C12DGCB) and 16 (C16DGCB) carbon atoms, determined as a function of concentration by means of direct methods, are reported here. Dilution enthalpies, densities, and sound velocities were measured at 298 K, allowing for the determination of apparent and partial molar enthalpies, volumes, and compressibilities. Changes in thermodynamic quantities upon micellization were derived using a pseudophase-transition approach. From a comparison with the corresponding acetylated compounds N-[2-(2,3,4,6-tetra-O-acetyl-beta-D-glucopyranosyl)ethyl]-N,N-dimethyl-N-dodecylammonium bromide (C12AGCB) and N-[2-(2,3,4,6-tetra-O-acetyl-beta-D-glucopyanosyl)ethyl]-N,N-dimethyl-N-hexadecylammonium bromide (C16AGCB), the role played in the micellization process by the acetylated glycosyl moiety was inferred: it enhances the hydrophobic character of the molecule and lowers the change in enthalpy of micelle formation by about 1.5 kJ mol(-1). By comparing the volume of C12DGCB with those of DEDAB and DTAB, the volumes taken up by the (beta- d-glucopyranosyl)ethyl and beta- d-glucopyranosyl groups were found to be 133 and 99 cm3 mol(-1), respectively. Regarding the interaction with DPPC membranes, it seems that the sugar moiety of the hexadecyl deacetylated compound gives rise to hydrogen bonds with the oxygen atoms of the lipid phosphates, shifting the phase transition of DPPC from a bilayer gel to a bilayer liquid crystal to lower temperatures. C16AGCB induces significantly greater changes than C16DGCB in the structure of liposomes, suggesting the formation of domains. The interaction is strongly enhanced by the presence of water. Neither compound interacts strongly with DNA or compacts it, as shown by EMSA assays and AFM images. Only C16AGCB is able to deliver little DNA inside cells when coformulated with DOPE, as shown by the transient transfection assay. This might be related to the ability of C16AGCB to form surfactant-rich domains in the lipid structure.

Compost humic acid-like (cHAL) polymeric matter (MW = 15610), isolated in 12% yield from food and green waste compost, exhibits very good surfactant properties in aqueous solution: i.e., critical micelle concentration (cmc) = 403 mg/L and surface tension at cmc = 36.1 mN/m. Values of cmc are confirmed also by conductivity and phenanthrene solubility measurements. These results, compared with those for other major commercial and research surfactants, propose cHAL as a competitive low-cost biosurfactant.

[reaction: see text] In this work, we report the synthesis of a new series of glucocationic surfactants, a class of surfactants we introduced very recently. The preparation of the surfactants is based on the synthesis of the 2-bromoethyl-2,3,4,6-tetra-O-acetyl-beta-D-glucopyranoside, whose preparation was studied in order to improve yields and stereoselectivity of this key intermediate. These glucocationic amphiphiles were prepared and studied as a model of cationic surfactants marked with a carbohydrate moiety. The use of carbohydrates as markers on cationic lipids was recently introduced to induce recognition by specific receptors, present on the surface of cell membranes. The chemicophysical characterization of these model structures can give more insight on the aggregation behavior. Conductivity and surface tension measurements were performed in order to characterize the compounds from the amphiphilic point of view. The results showed a different effect of the glucosidic moiety on the cmc value with respect to the glucopyridinium cationic surfactants. The surfactants also showed the tendency to form premicellar aggregates in solution when the hydrophobicity is raised.

The apparent and partial molar enthalpies, apparent molar volumes, and adiabatic compressibilities at 298 K of the aqueous solutions of the cationic gemini surfactants propanediyl-alpha,omega-bis(octyldimethylammonium bromide) (8-3-8) and propanediyl-alpha,omega-bis(dodecyldimethylammonium bromide) (12-3-12) have been measured as a function of concentration. The trends of the partial molar enthalpies versus concentration are the first well documented thermodynamic evidence of sphere to rod transition in the micellar phase, involving a detectable quantity of heat, and allow the determination of the change in enthalpy associated with this transition. The changes in enthalpies upon micellization and for the sphere to elongated micelles transition, DeltaH(s)(-->)(r), have been obtained from the experimental data by using a pseudo-phase transition approach: -1.5 kJ mol(-1) for 8-3-8 and -3.9 kJ mol(-1) for 12-3-12. No evidence of the above transition is found in the trends of volumetric properties versus m. The apparent adiabatic molar compressibilities for the compounds under investigation are also reported here for the first time: a negative group contribution for the methylene group is evaluated, when the surfactants are present in solution as a single molecule, reflecting its solvation structure. In the micellar phase, the -CH(2)- group contribution becomes positive. A value of 1.17 x 10(-3) cm(3) bar(-1) mol(-1) for the change in adiabatic molar compressibility upon micellization is obtained. The lower values of the methylene group contributions to the volumetric properties for the monomers support the hypothesis of partial association of the chains before the cmc.

RESUMEN

A new series of pyridinium cationic gemini surfactants was prepared by quaternization of the 2,2'-(alpha,omega-alkanediyl)bispyridines with N-alkylating agents, whose reactivity is briefly discussed. Particularly useful was the use of long-chain alkyl triflates (trifluoromethanesulfonates) for both overcoming the sterical hindrance in the pyridines and obtaining higher synthetic yields. Well-known 4,4'-(alpha,omega-alkanediyl)bis(1-alkylpyridinium) structures showed narrow temperature ranges for practical applications, due to their high Krafft points, while the new 2,2'-(alpha,omega-alkanediyl)bis(1-alkylpyridinium) series, accounted for good surface active properties. Due to the Krafft points below 0 degrees C, they could be exploited as solutions in water at any temperature. The characterization of the behavior of the series was performed by conductivity measurements. Some of the proposed structures exhibited unusual surface active behavior, which was interpreted in terms of particular conformational arrangements.

To understand the aggregation behavior of surface-active ligands with a salycilic polar head, we undertook a systematic study of some classes of anionic surfactants where the presence and the position of the -OH and the carboxylic group differ. This paper reports the dilution heats at 298 and 313 K of aqueous solutions of potassium 4-((alkylcarbonyl)amino)-2-hydroxybenzoate (KPAS-C(n) where n stands for the number of carbon atoms in the chain) in KOH at 0.1 m, measured as a function of concentration. From the experimental data, apparent and partial molar enthalpies vs concentration were obtained. By using a pseudo-phase-transition approach, the enthalpy changes upon micelle formation (DeltaH(m)) and assuming that in the restricted range of temperature examined heat capacities are constant, the heat capacity changes have been obtained. Micelle formation enthalpies are seen to be additive with a group contribution for the methylene group of -1.5+/-0.1 kJ mol(-1) per group at 298 K and -2.3+/-0.1 kJ mol(-1) per group at 313 K, comparable with that obtained for similar anionic compounds in the same experimental conditions and for N-alkylnicotinamide chlorides (cationic surfactants). The -CH(2)- group contribution to the micelle formation heat capacities is -53+/-1 J K(-1) mol(-1).
