RESUMEN

This article is composed of three independent commentaries about the state of Integrated, Coordinated, Open, Networked (ICON) principles in the American Geophysical Union Biogeosciences section, and discussion on the opportunities and challenges of adopting them. Each commentary focuses on a different topic: (a) Global collaboration, technology transfer, and application (Section 2), (b) Community engagement, community science, education, and stakeholder involvement (Section 3), and (c) Field, experimental, remote sensing, and real-time data research and application (Section 4). We discuss needs and strategies for implementing ICON and outline short- and long-term goals. The inclusion of global data and international community engagement are key to tackling grand challenges in biogeosciences. Although recent technological advances and growing open-access information across the world have enabled global collaborations to some extent, several barriers, ranging from technical to organizational to cultural, have remained in advancing interoperability and tangible scientific progress in biogeosciences. Overcoming these hurdles is necessary to address pressing large-scale research questions and applications in the biogeosciences, where ICON principles are essential. Here, we list several opportunities for ICON, including coordinated experimentation and field observations across global sites, that are ripe for implementation in biogeosciences as a means to scientific advancements and social progress.

RESUMEN

Photonic crystals are some of the more spectacular realizations that periodic arrays can change the behavior of electromagnetic waves. In nature, so-called structural colors appear in insects and even plants. Some species create beautiful color patterns as part of biological behavior such as reproduction or defense mechanisms as a form of biomimetics. The interaction between light and matter occurs at the surface, producing diffraction, interference and reflectance, and light transmission is possible under suitable conditions. In particular, there are two Colombian butterflies, Morpho cypris and Greta oto, that exhibit iridescence phenomena on their wings, and in this work, we relate these phenomena to the photonic effect. The experimental and theoretical approaches of the optical response visible region were studied to understand the underlying mechanism behind the light-matter interaction on the wings of these Colombian butterflies. Our results can guide the design of novel devices that use iridescence as angular filters or even for cosmetic purposes.

RESUMEN

The cattle tick Rhipicephalus microplus economically impacts cattle production in tropical and subtropical regions of the world. The recombinant R. microplus Subolesin antigen has been shown to protect cattle against tick infestations. In this study, we searched in silico protective epitopes in the subolesin gene and a recombinant peptide containing the predicted epitopes was expressed, and evaluated against a tick challenge. Two different epitope types, linear B-cells and conformational discontinuous epitopes, were predicted using bioinformatics strategies, in order to synthesize the recombinant peptide. Two Eightmonth-old calves European crossbred were immunized with two subcutaneous doses of the subolesin recombinant peptide, emulsified with Montanide ISA 50 V as an adjuvant, at 30-day intervals. The tick challenge was conducted with 5 000 R. microplus larvae/animal. ELISA test was used to evaluate the IgG immune response elicited against the peptide. After tick challenge, reduction in the number of engorged females (79%), and reduction in egg hatching (30%) was observed in tick population fed on immunized calves with regards to an untreated control group. The results showed a potential higher effect on tick reproduction for the recombinant peptide compared to other studies reported with Subolesin protein, demonstrating that the use of bioinformatics strategies to predict protective epitopes may lead to improve the immune response elicited against tick recombinant peptides and therefore to prevent cattle tick infestations.

L-selectin is an adhesion molecule that is responsible for the initial attachment of leukocytes to endothelium. After leukocyte activation L-selectin is endoproteolytically released from the cell surface. In order to analyze the relationship between soluble L-selectin (sL-selectin) and parameters of immune activation and disease progression, 51 HIV infected children and 15 healthy controls were studied. Serum L-selectin concentrations were significantly higher in HIV infected children than in the control group. Levels of sL-selectin were higher in HIV infected patients with severe immunologic suppression than in those with moderate or no evidence of suppression. A positive correlation between sL-selectin levels and LTCD8 counts, sL-selectin and soluble intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (sICAM-1) and immunogobulin A (IgA) levels was detected. On the contrary sL-selectin concentration did not correlate with plasmatic viral load. The correlation with parameters of immune activation may implicate involvement of sL-selectin in the immunopathogenesis of HIV infection.

RESUMEN

The effect of Fasciola hepatica parasite burden on the detection of excretory/secretory (E/S) antigens in sera and feces of experimentally infected sheep was evaluated using a double antibody-based capture enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Four groups of five sheep each were used. The first three groups were infected with 50, 100 and 200 metacercariae of F. hepatica, and the fourth group remained as non-infected control. On the day of infection and weekly thereafter, serum and fecal samples were taken. ELISA detected F. hepatica E/S antigen levels in serum from the first week post-infection (wpi) and in fecal supernatant from the fourth wpi, which were significantly (p<0.05) higher than controls. F. hepatica eggs were not detected until after the eighth wpi. The correlation between absorbance of E/S antigens in serum with the fluke burden was 0.77 (p<0.0001) and in feces 0.76 (p<0.0001) at 12th wpi. The sensitivity of the assay to detect E/S antigens in serum was 86.6% and in feces 93.3%. It is concluded that the ELISA technique used in this study offers a diagnostic alternative for detecting early infections of F. hepatica in sheep.

RESUMEN

This multicenter, open-label study assessed the clinical efficacy and tolerability of the proton-pump inhibitor rabeprazole 20 mg once daily in 189 patients with functional dyspepsia and normal findings on upper endoscopy. The clinical efficacy rate was 86% after only 4 weeks of treatment, and symptoms remained under control at the end of 4 weeks without treatment. Rabeprazole was well tolerated and was associated with a low incidence (8%) of mild, transient adverse events.

RESUMEN

The aim of the present study was to compare the sensitivity, specificity and usefulness of the DIG-ELISA, DOT-ELISA and Indirect ELISA tests for determining the seroprevalence of fasciolosis in cattle under tropical conditions in Mexico. To standardize the tests, positive and negative sera to F. hepatica from 88 Holstein Freisian adult cows located in an enzootic area of fascioliosis and 88 crossbred adult cattle from a fluke-free area were used. For the epidemiological study, 85 crossbred cattle between 1 to 7 years of age were used. Animals were bled every two months, from March 1995 to September 1996 and the sera obtained were stored at -70 degrees C, until used. Indirect ELISA showed a sensitivity of 96.5% and a specificity of 98.8%, DIG-ELISA 97.5% and 80.0% and DOT-ELISA 93.1% and 95.4%, respectively. During 1995, Indirect ELISA yielded the highest levels of IgG anti-F. hepatica antibodies. However, in 1996, after animal treatment with triclabendazole, DIG-ELISA tended to show higher percentages of antibody-positive animals, but it was not significantly different (p>0.05) from the other tests. Comparisons made in parallel to the faecal sedimentation test demonstrated that all serological tests detected higher percentages of positive animals. Only one serum out of ten (10%) of Paramphistomum spp. cross-reacted with the DOT-ELISA test, but no cross-reaction was observed with sera from animals with other parasites. All ELISA tests were highly sensitive and specific; they may be recommended for use in seroepidemiological surveys for F. hepatica.

RESUMEN

The strain G89HT of Clostridium argentinense obtained by culture selection of the prototype G89 strain producing high titers of type G botulinal toxin was studied. Its cultural, biochemical and toxigenic characteristics and the presence of plasmids were tested. Both strains showed similar physiological features and carried a 83 MDa plasmid. A 170 MDa plasmid was also recognized in the G89HT strain. Notably, this strain was better sporulating and showed a higher toxigenicity than the prototype G89 C. argentinense strain. These two characteristics might permit a long term storage and perhaps yield high antitoxin titres.

RESUMEN

A study was performed in order to explore the costs of treating diabetic retinopathy at a large eye hospital in Mexico with a view to identifying opportunities for improving efficiency. Clinical records of a random sample of 69 diabetic patients were reviewed for data on each patient's background, medical history, and treatment; and the costs of all resources utilized in each type of procedure provided were documented and priced. The resulting data on clinical costs was complemented by data on the private costs of treatment (medical fees, accommodation costs, transportation costs, and lost wages) that were gathered from patient interviews. The study found that the patients, who were generally poor, shouldered a substantial economic burden associated with treatment at the hospital; however, less than half this burden was in the form of fees. The rest involved other out-of-pocket expenditures on food, travel, and accommodation (45% of the total) and lost wages (10% of the total). Suggestions for reducing various of these costs without endangering treatment quality are presented. These include suggestions for reducing waiting time; reducing the number of patient visits required by increasing the strength of individual laser treatments, completing more procedures in a single visit, and reviewing hospital policy on fluoroangiograms; and increasing the chances for early and effective treatment by educating at-risk relatives accompanying the patients about the need for early treatment.

RESUMEN

We found the following results in 30 patients with intraocular cysticercosis: (1) a higher incidence in the first two decades of life compared with neurocysticercosis, (2) living cysticerci concomitant with inflammatory reactions, (3) diseases related to immune dysfunction in 17% of the cases, (4) anticysticercus antibodies in 57% of cases, (5) blindness in 81% of patients despite proper surgery, and (6) adult Taenia solium infection in a higher frequency of cases than expected for the Mexican population. We discuss these findings in light of recent and established knowledge regarding this disease.

RESUMEN

Bioactivity directed fractionation of the acetone extract of Teloxys graveolens (Willd.) Weber (Chenopodiaceae), using the brine shrimp lethality test, led to the isolation of 5,7-dihydroxyflavanone (pinocembrine) (LC50 = 4.25 micrograms/ml) as the only active compound. Pinocembrine also exhibited fasciolicide, ovicide and larvicide activities on newly excysted Fasciola hepatica, on infective eggs of Ascaridi galli and on stage three larvae of Stomoxys calcitrans, respectively.

RESUMEN

The evolution of the main topics of study related to the biology, the life-cycle and the distribution of insects causing cutaneous myiasis during the last century is presented. These subjects are still of interest and a synopsis of new data concerning Hypoderma tarandi, H. diana and Prezhevalskiana silenus is reported as well as the changes of distribution of some species such as Cochliomyia hominivorax. In the second part, an over view of what has been archived on myiasis immunology is reviewed. This is based on the work conducted on Lucilia cuprina and Hypoderma. The areas of research are serological diagnosis, disease monitoring, immunological mechanisms of host protection and parasite escape. The following topic reviewed the latest developments in chemotherapy, the problems associated with this approach to control the myiasis and the part played by these chemicals in successful eradication programs. In the last topic the latest results obtained with the use of biological measures to control C. hominivorax and H. bovis and H. lineatum are reported.

RESUMEN

An experimental model of Taenia crassiceps intraocular cysticercosis was developed in rabbits. The objectives of this study were to analyze the pathophysiology of this parasitic infection and to evaluate the humoral immune response. Cysticerci, inoculated in the anterior chamber of the eye, were able to grow; no inflammatory changes in the eye or anticysticercus antibodies in serum or in aqueous humor were detected during the 12-day period. In contrast, rabbits that had previously been either infected intraperitoneally with living T. crassiceps cysts or immunized intramuscularly with T. crassiceps antigenic extract developed an intense inflammatory reaction in the eye and high levels of antibodies were detected in serum and aqueous humor even before the intraocular inoculation of parasites. Furthermore, intraocular cysticerci showed minimal growth and some were eliminated. These findings support the concept that the eye is an immunologically privileged site in the nonimmunized host and the importance of the immune response in the elimination of this parasitic infection.

RESUMEN

There are still great incognites in the etiology and physiopathology of the so called chronic complications of diabetes mellitus. There are specially many questions about the origin of the diabetic microangiopathy which is the cause of several alterations like the diabetic retinopathy. Genetic, immunological and environmental factors have been involucrated in its development. In order to study the genetic involvement, in fifteen normal brothers and sisters of known diabetics type I a retina fluorangiographic study was performed. In all the cases the fluorangiography was normal suggesting that the genetic factors must coexist with the metabolic disturbance to produce retina vessels damage.

RESUMEN

The vitreoretinal relationships in 1021 eyes of 570 patients with diabetic retinopathy and in 857 normal eyes were studied retrospectively in an attempt to identify the vitreous changes specifically related to diabetes. Complete posterior vitreous detachment (PVD) occurred in diabetic patients largely as part of the aging process, but proliferation interfered with its development. Complete PVD with nonproliferative diabetic retinopathy in the younger age groups was more prevalent in eyes treated by panretinal photocoagulation (PRP) than in untreated eyes and thus might have an association with PRP treatment. Partial PVD, seen mainly in proliferative diabetic retinopathy, had no correlation with aging. In the eyes of patients who were younger when diabetes was diagnosed, the development of partial PVD had a close correlation with the duration of diabetes. The data suggest the need for a clinical trial of early photocoagulation, before partial PVD develops, in younger-onset diabetic patients showing early proliferative changes.

RESUMEN

We observed and photographed intraocular cysticercosis in a 50-year-old woman. The subretinal cysticercus in the macular area produced a macular break during its passage from the subretinal space into the vitreous cavity. The parasite was removed by closed vitrectomy, but the macular break was left untreated because there was no vitreous traction to the macula. The patient ultimately developed a subretinal scar in the macular area, and visual acuity improved from hand movements to counting fingers.
