RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: With an incidence rate as high as 46%-58%, hypoglycemia is a common complication of glycemic management among those suffering from type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2DM). According to preclinical research, hypoglycemia episodes may impair cognition by harming neurons. However, there is still controversy regarding the clinical evidence for the relationship between hypoglycemic events and the likelihood of cognitive impairment. Furthermore, little research has been done on the dose-response association between hypoglycemia incidents and the possibility of cognitive impairment. To address these knowledge gaps, the present research intends to update the comprehension of the association among hypoglycemic events and the risk of cognitive impairment and to clarify the correlation between dose and response by incorporating the most recent investigations. METHOD AND ANALYSIS: This work has developed a protocol for a systematic review and meta-analysis that will examine, via a well-organized assessment of several databases, the relationship between the incidence of hypoglycemia and the probability of cognitive impairment. Observational studies investigating the connection between hypoglycemia episodes and cognitive impairment will be included. The databases that will be searched are PubMed, Web of Science, the Chinese Biomedical Literature Database (CBM), Cochrane Library, Embase, the China National Knowledge (CNKI), Wan Fang, the Chinese Science and Technology Periodical Database (VIP), and Du Xiu. Literature from the establishment of each database to December 2023 will be included in the search. Two researchers will independently screen the studies that satisfy the requirements for both inclusion and exclusion. A third researcher will be asked to mediate any disputes. The methodological caliber of the studies included will be assessed utilizing the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS) or the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) critical appraisal method. With regard to GRADE, which stands for Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development, and Evaluation, the quality of the evidence will be evaluated. ROBIS Tool will be used to evaluate the risk of bias in the development of the systematic review. If the data is accessible, meta-analysis and dose-response curve analysis will be employed by Stata software. However, if the data does not allow for such analysis, a descriptive review will be performed. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: Hypoglycemic episodes may raise the likelihood of cognitive impairment, according to earlier investigations. This study will update the relevant evidence and explore the dose-response connection between hypoglycemic episodes and cognitive impairment. The results of this review will have significant effects on decision-making by individuals with diabetes, healthcare providers, and government policy institutions. RESUMEN

The dry eye is a common ocular surface disease caused by multiple factors with multiple pathogenesis. With the increasing morbidity of dry eye in our country year by year, dry eye has gradually attracted people's attention. The pathogenesis of dry eye is more complicated whose critical influencing factors include inflammation, corneal and conjunctival epithelial cell changes, tear film composition changes, corneal nerve changes, and meibomian gland dysfunction and so on. The tear film hypertonicity leads to the hypertonicity of the ocular surface epithelial cells, stimulating the cascade of inflammation, which is the most critical part among the pathogenesis of dry eye. A variety of inflammatory mediators and immune cells are involved in this process, and more and more people have reached a consensus that the dry eye is an antigen-specific autoimmune inflammatory disease and they are closely correlated with each. In clinical treatment, various anti-inflammatory drugs and drugs promoting tear secretion mark the rapid development of drug therapy for dry eye to some extent, but dry eye treatment is not only to improve symptoms, but to carry out treatment according to specific etiology. Recently, researches on the immune mechanism of dry eye have been increasing. This article reviewed on the immune progress of dry eye to realize the clinical significance and systematically understand the role of which in the occurrence and development of dry eye.

RESUMEN

Pterygium is an ocular surface disease formed by many factors and associate with a series of changes caused by ultraviolet irradiation and radiation, its pathogenesis is still uncertain. Elevated vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF), inflammatory infiltrates, angiogenesis, oxidative stress, epithelial-mesenchymal cell transition(EMT), and tumor suppressor gene inactivation are currently recognized causes of pterygium. The mechanism of this factor in pterygium deveopment is still not completely understood. This review aimed to investigate the role of these factors in pterygium formation and provide targeted therapy and effective preventive measures for clinical diagnosis and treatment.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To observe the clinical efficacy of ZHU Lian's type Ⅱ inhibition acupuncture for chronic migraine, and explore the possible mechanism. METHODS: A total of 120 patients with chronic migraine were randomized into an observation group (60 cases, 3 cases dropped off) and a control group (60 cases, 2 cases dropped off). In the control group, flunarizine hydrochloride capsule was taken orally, 5 mg each time, once a day. In the observation group, ZHU Lian's typeⅡ inhibition acupuncture was applied at Erheliao (TE 22), Shousanli (LI 10), Hegu (LI 4), Yangbai (GB 14), Tongziliao (GB 1), Zusanli (ST 36) ect., once every other day. The treatment was given 4 weeks in the two groups. Before and after treatment, the migraine clinical symptom score, cerebral hemodynamics indexes (blood flow velocity of arterior cerebral artery [ACA], posterior cerebral artery [PCA], bilateral middle cerebral artery [MCA] and basilar artery [BA]), serum related indexes (levels of 5-hydroxytryptamine [5-HT], vascular endothelial growth factor [VEGF] and calcitonin gene-related peptide [CGRP]) and migraine specific quality of life questionnaire (MSQ) score were observed in the two groups, and the clinical effect was evaluated. RESULTS: The total effective rate in the observation group was 93.0% (53/57), which was higher than 79.3% (46/58) in the control group (P<0.05). After treatment, the number of headache attack was reduced, duration time was shortened, and the scores of pain intensity and concomitant symptom, cerebral hemodynamics indexes (blood flow velocity of ACA, PCA, MCA and BA) and serum levels of VEGF and CGRP were lower than before treatment in the two groups (P<0.05, P<0.01), and those in the observation group were lower than the control group (P<0.05). After treatment, the serum levels of 5-HT and MSQ scores of functional limitation, dysfunction and emotion were higher than before treatment in the two groups (P<0.05), and those in the observation group were higher than the control group (P<0.05). CONCLUSION: ZHU Lian's type Ⅱ inhibition acupuncture could reduce frequency of migraine attack and duration time, improve pain intensity, cerebral blood flow velocity and quality of life for patients with chronic migraine, its mechanism may be related to regulating serum levels of 5-HT, CGRP and VEGF.

RESUMEN

Stevens-Johnson syndrome/toxic epidermal necrolysis (SJS/TEN) is a rare adverse cutaneous reaction with a low incidence and high mortality. Despite posing a serious threat to patients' health and lives, there is no high-quality evidence for a standard treatment regimen. Here we report the case of a 62-year-old man with stage IV pancreatic cancer who experienced immunotherapy-induced SJS/TEN. After consensus-based regular treatments at a local hospital, his symptoms became worse. Thus, he consented to receive Chinese herbal medicine (CHM) therapy. The affected parts of the patient were treated with the CHM Pi-Yan-Ning which was applied externally for 20 min twice a day. After 7 days of treatment, the dead skin began peeling away from the former lesions that had covered his hands, feet, and lips, indicating that skin had regenerated. After 12 days of treatment, the patient's skin was completely recovered. In this case, SJS/TEN was successfully treated with Pi-Yan-Ning, suggesting that there might be tremendous potential for the use of Pi-Yan-Ning in the treatment of severe skin reactions to drug treatments. Further basic investigations and clinical trials to explore the mechanism and efficacy are needed.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Protein phosphatase 2 regulatory subunit B'' alpha (PPP2R3A) gene has been reported in other tumors, but the influence of PPP2R3A gene expression on the occurrence, development, and prognosis of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) remains unclear. AIM: To investigate whether the PPP2R3A gene could be used to predict tumor recurrence and survival of HCC patients after liver transplantation (LT). METHODS: Diseased liver tissues of HCC patients after LT were collected as well as their clinical data and follow-up information. The immunohistochemical method was used to detect the expression of PPP2R3A protein in the tissues of 108 patients with primary liver cancer. The χ 2 test was used to analyze the relationship between PPP2R3A protein expression levels and the clinicopathological features of tumors. The Kaplan-Meier method was used to analyze overall postoperative survival. The COX proportional hazard model was used to analyze adverse prognostic factors. RESULTS: Immunohistochemistry showed that the PPP2R3A protein was mainly expressed in the cytoplasm of HCC cells. Compared to corresponding peritumoral tissues, expression was higher in HCC tissues (P ≤ 0.001). Correlation analysis showed that high PPP2R3A expression was correlated with preoperative serum alpha-fetoprotein (AFP) levels (P = 0.003), tumor-node-metastasis-t stage (P ≤ 0.001), and envelope invasion (P = 0.001). Univariate analysis showed that overall survival (P ≤ 0.001) and recurrence-free survival (P = 0.025) of patients with high PPP2R3A expression (≥ 4 points) were poor compared to those with low expression (< 4 points). The overall survival rates or recurrence-free survival rates at 1, 2, and 3 years with high PPP2R3A expression were 73%, 38%, and 23% or 31%, 23%, and 23%, respectively. Multivariate analysis showed that high PPP2R3A expression (hazard ratio = 2.900, 95% confidence interval: 1.411-5.960, P = 0.004) was an independent survival risk factor of HCC patients after LT, and it was also an independent predictor of postoperative tumor recurrence. This study also showed in patients with AFP ≥ 400 ng/mL, the overall survival (P ≤ 0.001) and recurrence-free survival (P = 0.023) of those with high PPP2R3A expression were significantly worse compared to those with low PPP2R3A expression. When PPP2R3A expression was low, the overall survival rate (P = 0.461) or recurrence-free survival rate (P = 0.072) after LT in patients with AFP < 400 ng/mL and ≥ 400 ng/mL was not significantly difference. The 1, 2, and 3 year survival rate of patients with low PPP2R3A expression and AFP < 400 ng/mL were 98%, 80%, and 69%, respectively, while patients who met Hangzhou criteria had a post-transplant 1, 2, and 3 years overall survival rate of 89%, 66%, and 55%, respectively. CONCLUSION: High expression of PPP2R3A might be a potential marker for predicting poor prognosis of HCC after LT. Combined with serum AFP levels, PPP2R3A might enhance the accuracy of predicting HCC outcome in patients after LT and supplement the efficacy of the Hangzhou criteria.

RESUMEN

Hematite (Fe2O3) is one of the best candidates for photoelectrochemical water splitting due to its abundance and suitable bandgap. However, its efficiency is mostly impeded due to the intrinsically low conductivity and poor light absorption. In this study, we targeted this intrinsic behavior to investigate the thermodynamic stability, photoconductivity and optical properties of rhodium doped hematite using density functional theory. The calculated formation energy of pristine and rhodium doped hematite was - 4.47 eV and - 5.34 eV respectively, suggesting that the doped material is thermodynamically more stable. The DFT results established that the bandgap of doped hematite narrowed down to the lower edge (1.61 eV) in the visible region which enhanced the optical absorption and photoconductivity of the material. Moreover, doped hematite has the ability to absorb a broad spectrum (250-800) nm. The enhanced optical absorption boosted the photocurrent and incident photon to current efficiency. The calculated results also showed that the incorporation of rhodium in hematite induced a redshift in optical properties.

RESUMEN

Aim To study the effect of genistein on apoptosis in human breast cancer MDA-MB-231 cells and the underlying mechanisms. Methods MTT as-say was used to observe the inhibitory rate on human breast cancer MDA-MB-231 cells treated with genistein. Colony assay was used to determine the cell colony formation rate on human breast cancer MDA-MB-231 cells treated with genistein. Western blot was used to detect the expression of Bcl-2, Bax, caspase-3,NF-κB, ERK, p-ERK, JNK and p-JNK in human breast cancer MDA-MB-231 cells treated with genistein. Results The results of MTT assay showed that genistein inhibited the viability of breast cancer MDA-MB-231 cells in a time- and concentration-de-pendent manner. Colony assay suggested that genistein had an antiproliferative effect on MDA-MB-231 cells. The expression levels of Bcl-2, NF-κB and p-ERK were significantly down-regulated compared with con-trol(P < 0.01). However, the expression of Bax, caspase-3 and p-JNK was significantly up-regulated(P<0.01). Conclusions Genistein could inhibit the growth of human breast cancer MDA-MB-231 cells and induce apoptosis, and the mechanism may be related to the inhibition of NF-κB, ERK/MAPK signaling path-ways and the activation of JNK/MAPK signaling path-way.

RESUMEN

Blue luminescent carbon dots (CDs) with a high photoluminescence (PL) quantum yield (48.3 ± 5.3%) were prepared by the one-pot hydrothermal reaction of citric acid with poly(ethylenimine) (PEI). The CDs display bright PL, narrow emission spectra, pH-dependent PL intensity, high photostability, and up-converted luminescence. The CDs exhibit a quenching of both down- and up-conversion PL in the presence of morin and thus serve as useful probes for morin detection. Both down- and up-conversion measurements allow the quantification of concentrations from 0 to 300 µmol/L with a detection limit of 0.6 µmol/L, and this dual-mode detection increases the reliability of the measurement. The proposed method of determination is simple, sensitive, and cost-effective, with potential applications in clinical and biochemical assays.

RESUMEN

Microporous organic capsules with hollow interiors have received enormous attention due to their unusual encapsulation efficiency to confine chemicals within their hollow cavities and prompted controlled release by circumventing their ripening or poisoning. To this end, herein, we report the design and synthesis of carboxylic group functionalized hollow microporous organic capsules (HMOCs) using a facile emulsion polymerization technique that show extraordinary high encapsulation efficiency (up to 98%) of morphine·HCl and its promising prolonged release. The functionalized HMOCs are found to release the drug at a rate which is proportional to the amount of drug remaining in its interior. Due to the presence of hollow and porous morphologies, they possess high BET surface areas, i.e. up to 974 m2 g-1. Moreover, the in vivo results showed that functionalized HMOCs can offer slow release of active drug molecules and attenuate the level of writhing response over 72 h of intraperitoneal injection. The functionalized HMOCs, therefore, present a new class of potential drug delivery systems that can maintain the slow and prolonged release of analgesics by lowering the dosage and avoid frequent administration.

Objective To investigate the expression levels of miR-494 in breast cancer tissues and cell lines, and its correlations with the clinical stages, metastasis and prognosis of breast cancer. Methods The expression levels of miR--494 in 5 breast cancer cell lines, including MDA-MB-231,MDA-MB-453,HCC-1937,MDA-MB-468 and MCF-7,and normal breast cell line HBL-100,were detected by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR).The breast cancer tissues and normal adjacent tissues from 54 patients with breast cancer were collected, and their expression levels of miR-494 were determined by qRT-PCR.Then,the correlations of miR-494 levels with clinical stages, metastasis and prognosis of breast cancer were analyzed. Results The expression levels of miR-494 in MDA-MB-231,MDA-MB-453,HCC-1937,MDA-MB-468 and MCF-7 cells were significantly lower than that in HBL-100 cells (t =212.9,37.73,27.53,10.61 and 19.46,respectively,and all P <0.05).The expression levels of miR-494 in breast cancer tissues were also significantly lower than that in normal adjacent tissues (t =5.80,P < 0.01).Moreover,the expression of miR-494 was significantly related to the clinical stage (x2 =17.41,P <0.05),tumor grade (x2 =5.33,P <0.05),C-erbB-2 expression (x2 =9.83,P < 0.05) and the percentage of Ki-67 positive cells ((2 =6.13,P < 0.05) of breast cancer. Conclusion The expression levels of miR-494 are significantly dowrregulated in breast cancer tissues and cell lines, and related to the clinical stage, metastasis and prognosis of breast cancer, indicating that miR-494 may serve as a new biomarker for the diagnosis and prognosis of breast cancer.

RESUMEN

Recent studies have shown that long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) have critical roles in tumorigenesis, including osteosarcoma. The lncRNA taurine-upregulated gene 1 (TUG1) was reported to be involved in the progression of osteosarcoma. Here, we investigated the role of TUG1 in osteosarcoma cells and the underlying mechanism. TUG1 expression was measured in osteosarcoma cell lines and human normal osteoblast cells by quantitative real-time PCR (qRT-PCR). The effects of TUG1 on osteosarcoma cells were studied by RNA interference in vitro and in vivo. The mechanism of competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA) was determined using bioinformatic analysis and luciferase assays. Our data showed that TUG1 knockdown inhibited cell proliferation and colony formation, and induced G0/G1 cell cycle arrest and apoptosis in vitro, and suppressed tumor growth in vivo. Besides, we found that TUG1 acted as an endogenous sponge to directly bind to miR-9-5p and downregulated miR-9-5p expression. Moreover, TUG1 overturned the effect of miR-9-5p on the proliferation, colony formation, cell cycle arrest, and apoptosis in osteosarcoma cells, which involved the derepression of POU class 2 homeobox 1 (POU2F1) expression. In conclusion, our study elucidated a novel TUG1/miR-9-5p/POU2F1 pathway, in which TUG1 acted as a ceRNA by sponging miR-9-5p, leading to downregulation of POU2F1 and facilitating the tumorigenesis of osteosarcoma. These findings may contribute to the lncRNA-targeted therapy for human osteosarcoma.

RESUMEN

The elastic anisotropy and thermodynamic properties of the recently synthesized Pnnm-CN have been investigated using first-principles calculations under high temperature and high pressure. The calculated equilibrium crystal parameters and normalized volume dependence of the resulting pressure agree with available experimental and theoretical results. Within the considered pressure range of 0-90 GPa, the dependences of the bulk modulus, Young's modulus, and shear modulus on the crystal orientation for Pnnm-CN have been systematically studied. The results show that the Pnnm-CN exhibits a well-pronounced elastic anisotropy. The incompressibility is largest along the c-axis. For tension or compression loading, the Pnnm-CN is stiffest along [001] and the most obedient along [100] direction. On the basis of the quasi-harmonic Debye model, we have explored the Debye temperature, heat capacity, thermal expansion coefficient, and Grüneisen parameters within the pressure range of 0-90 GPa and temperature range of 0-1600K.

RESUMEN

Objective:With the development of modern skull base minimally invasive technology mature and neural radio surgery techniques,it is necessary to re-examine the therapeutic strategy for the treat-ment of petroclival meningiomas. To sum up the operative experience and methods in microsurgical resec-tion of petroclival meningiomas by the combining trans-subtemporal and suboccipital retrosigmoid keyhole approach. To explore the minimally invasive operation approach of petroclival meningiomas,to raise the removal degree and to improve the postoperative result using this approach. Methods:The clinical data of the consecutive 21 patients with the petroclival meningiomas were reviewed retrospectively. The meth-od,degree of tumor resection, techniques of the combining keyhole approach,Karnofsky performance score (KPS)before and after operation were also analyzed. The neuronavigation guided operation was performed in 9 cases, and 12 cases were operated in the neuroelectrophysiological monitoring. Results:Total excision of the tumor resection (Simpson,Ⅰ -Ⅱlevels)was conducted in 18 cases (85.7%,18 /21),and 3 patients underwent close resection (Simpson Ⅲ level,14.3%,3 /21).Postoperative three-dimensional CT showed good lock bone flap restoration;Postoperative pathology confirmed meningioma. Postoperative cranial nerve dysfunction or new original nerve dysfunction were aggravated in 5 cases (23.8%),including transient trochlear nerve (3 cases),abducent nerve (1 case),and the motor branch of trigeminal nerve paralysis (1 case).Abducent nerve paralysis (1 case)appeared, with hearing impairment. After the 3-month follow-up,11 cases had the same KPS aspreoperation,7 cases improved, and 3 cases not improved. The KPS score was 77.14 ±23.12 on average, and there was no statistically significant difference compared with that before operation (P >0.05 ).The postoperative follow-up for half a year showed fluent speaking and writing in 19 cases (KPS 70 or higher),and general recovery in 2 cases (KPS <70).The postoperative follow-up for 3 -29 months showed no tumor recur-rence or progress. Conclusion:The combining trans-subtemporal and suboccipital retrosigmoid keyhole approach is simple, safe, and minimally invasive, and an ideal operation approach of petroclival menin-gioma.To master the operation skills and the intraoperative matters needing attention in the operation,is favorable to improve the resection rate and curative effect.
