RESUMEN

The nuclei below lead but with more than 126 neutrons are crucial to an understanding of the astrophysical r process in producing nuclei heavier than A∼190. Despite their importance, the structure and properties of these nuclei remain experimentally untested as they are difficult to produce in nuclear reactions with stable beams. In a first exploration of the shell structure of this region, neutron excitations in ^{207}Hg have been probed using the neutron-adding (d,p) reaction in inverse kinematics. The radioactive beam of ^{206}Hg was delivered to the new ISOLDE Solenoidal Spectrometer at an energy above the Coulomb barrier. The spectroscopy of ^{207}Hg marks a first step in improving our understanding of the relevant structural properties of nuclei involved in a key part of the path of the r process.

RESUMEN

The isoscalar monopole response has been measured in the unstable nucleus (68)Ni using inelastic alpha scattering at 50A MeV in inverse kinematics with the active target MAYA at GANIL. The isoscalar giant monopole resonance (ISGMR) centroid was determined to be 21.1 ± 1.9 MeV and indications for a soft monopole mode are provided for the first time at 12.9 ± 1.0 MeV. Analysis of the corresponding angular distributions using distorted-wave-born approximation with random-phase approximation transition densities indicates that the L = 0 multipolarity dominates the cross section for the ISGMR and significantly contributes to the low-energy mode. The L=0 part of this low-energy mode, the soft monopole mode, is dominated by neutron excitations. This demonstrates the relevance of inelastic alpha scattering in inverse kinematics in order to probe both the ISGMR and isoscalar soft modes in neutron-rich nuclei.

Energies and spectroscopic factors of the first 7/2-, 3/2-, 1/2-, and 5/2- states in the (35)Si21 nucleus were determined by means of the (d, p) transfer reaction in inverse kinematics at GANIL using the MUST2 and EXOGAM detectors. By comparing the spectroscopic information on the Si35 and S37 isotones, a reduction of the p3/2-p1/2 spin-orbit splitting by about 25% is proposed, while the f7/2-f5/2 spin-orbit splitting seems to remain constant. These features, derived after having unfolded nuclear correlations using shell model calculations, have been attributed to the properties of the two-body spin-orbit interaction, the amplitude of which is derived for the first time in an atomic nucleus. The present results, remarkably well reproduced by using several realistic nucleon-nucleon forces, provide a unique touchstone for the modeling of the spin-orbit interaction in atomic nuclei.

Many (multi-centre) breath-analysis studies require transport and storage of samples. We aimed to test the effect of transportation and storage using sorbent tubes of exhaled breath samples for diagnostic accuracy of eNose and GC-MS analysis. As a reference standard for diagnostic accuracy, breath samples of asthmatic patients and healthy controls were analysed by three eNose devices. Samples were analysed by GC-MS and eNose after 1, 7 and 14 days of transportation and storage using sorbent tubes. The diagnostic accuracy for eNose and GC-MS after storage was compared to the reference standard. As a validation, the stability was assessed of 15 compounds known to be related to asthma, abundant in breath or related to sampling and analysis. The reference test discriminated asthma and healthy controls with a median AUC (range) of 0.77 (0.72-0.76). Similar accuracies were achieved at t1 (AUC eNose 0.78; GC-MS 0.84), t7 (AUC eNose 0.76; GC-MS 0.79) and t14 (AUC eNose 0.83; GC-MS 0.84). The GC-MS analysis of compounds showed an adequate stability for all 15 compounds during the 14 day period. Short-term transportation and storage using sorbent tubes of breath samples does not influence the diagnostic accuracy for discrimination between asthma and health by eNose and GC-MS.

RESUMEN

Single nucleon pickup reactions were performed with a 18.1 MeV/nucleon (14)O beam on a deuterium target. Within the coupled reaction channel framework, the measured cross sections were compared to theoretical predictions and analyzed using both phenomenological and microscopic overlap functions. The missing strength due to correlations does not show significant dependence on the nucleon separation energy asymmetry over a wide range of 37 MeV, in contrast with nucleon removal data analyzed within the sudden-eikonal formalism.

RESUMEN

A measurement of the final state distribution of the (8)B ß decay, obtained by implanting a (8)B beam in a double-sided silicon strip detector, is reported here. The present spectrum is consistent with a recent independent precise measurement performed by our collaboration at the IGISOL facility, Jyväskylä [O. S. Kirsebom et al., Phys. Rev. C 83, 065802 (2011)]. It shows discrepancies with previously measured spectra, leading to differences in the derived neutrino spectrum. Thanks to a low detection threshold, the neutrino spectrum is for the first time directly extracted from the measured final state distribution, thus avoiding the uncertainties related to the extrapolation of R-matrix fits. Combined with the IGISOL data, this leads to an improvement of the overall errors and the extension of the neutrino spectrum at high energy. The new unperturbed neutrino spectrum represents a benchmark for future measurements of the solar neutrino flux as a function of energy.

Collisions induced by (9,10,11)Be on a 64Zn target at the same c.m. energy were studied. For the first time, strong effects of the 11Be halo structure on elastic-scattering and reaction mechanisms at energies near the Coulomb barrier are evidenced experimentally. The elastic-scattering cross section of the 11Be halo nucleus shows unusual behavior in the Coulomb-nuclear interference peak angular region. The extracted total-reaction cross section for the 11Be collision is more than double the ones measured in the collisions induced by (9,10)Be. It is shown that such a strong enhancement of the total-reaction cross section with 11Be is due to transfer and breakup processes.

RESUMEN

A modern variation of the Rutherford experiment to probe the tunneling of exotic nuclear matter from the measurement of the residues formed in the bombardment of (197)Au by extremely neutron-rich (8)He nuclei is presented. Using a novel off-beam technique the most precise and accurate measurements of fusion and neutron transfer involving reaccelerated unstable beams are reported. The results show unusual behavior of the tunneling of (8)He compared to that for lighter helium isotopes, highlighting the role of the intrinsic structure of composite many-body quantum systems and pairing correlations.

RESUMEN

The deuteron-emission channel in the beta decay of the halo nucleus (11)Li was measured at the Isotope Separator and Accelerator facility at TRIUMF by implanting postaccelerated (11)Li ions into a segmented silicon detector. The events of interest were identified by correlating the decays of (11)Li with those of the daughter nuclei. This method allowed the energy spectrum of the emitted deuterons to be extracted, free from contributions from other channels, and a precise value for the branching ratio B(d)=1.30(13)x10(-4) to be deduced for E(c.m.)>200 keV. The results provide the first unambiguous experimental evidence that the decay takes place essentially in the halo of (11)Li and that it proceeds mainly to the (9)Li+d continuum, opening up a new means to study the halo wave function of (11)Li.

Angular distributions for 1n and 2n transfer are reported for the 6He+65Cu system at E_{lab}=22.6 MeV. For the first time, triple coincidences between alpha particles, neutrons, and characteristic gamma rays from the targetlike residues were used to separate the contributions arising from 1n and 2n transfer. The differential cross sections for these channels, elastic scattering, and fusion were analyzed using a coupled reaction channels approach. The large measured ratio of the 2n-to-1n cross section and the strong influence of 2n transfer on other channels indicate that the dineutron configuration of 6He plays a dominant role in the reaction mechanism.

BACKGROUND: Hemodialysis (HD) grafts often fail because of stenosis at the venous anastomosis and thrombotic occlusion. Percutaneous management relies on thrombolysis with plasminogen activators, mechanical removal of thrombus, and angioplasty of the stenotic lesion. OBJECTIVES: This report describes a phase I trial using Plasmin (Human) TAL 05-00018, a direct-acting fibrinolytic agent, to evaluate safety and, secondarily, to establish effective thrombolytic dosing. PATIENTS/METHODS: Six cohorts of five patients with acute HD graft occlusion documented by angiography were treated with escalating dosages of plasmin (1, 2, 4, 8, 12, and 24 mg) infused over 30 min via criss-crossed pulse-spray catheters within the graft. The primary efficacy endpoint was > or =50% thrombolysis, as determined by comparison of pre-plasmin and 30-min post-plasmin fistulograms. RESULTS: Of 31 subjects who received study drug (safety population), one withdrew and 30 completed the trial (evaluable for efficacy). There was no significant change in plasma alpha-2 antiplasmin or fibrinogen concentration, major bleeding did not occur, and there were no deaths. Serious adverse events in four patients were not related to the study drug. There was a dose-response relationship for the primary efficacy endpoint, all five subjects receiving 24 mg achieving >75% lysis. CONCLUSIONS: This first phase I study of Plasmin (Human) TAL 05-00018, infused into thrombosed HD grafts, documents safety at dosages of 1-24 mg and an effective thrombolytic dosage of 24 mg. The results establish a foundation for further clinical study of catheter-based plasmin administration in thrombotic disorders.

RESUMEN

Neutron-rich, radioactive Zn isotopes were investigated at the Radioactive Ion Beam facility REX-ISOLDE (CERN) using low-energy Coulomb excitation. The energy of the 2(1)+ state in 78Zn could be firmly established and for the first time the 2+ --> 0(1)+ transition in 80Zn was observed at 1492(1) keV. B(E2,2(1)+ --> 0(1)+) values were extracted for (74,76,78,80)Zn and compared to large scale shell model calculations. With only two protons outside the Z=28 proton core, 80Zn is the lightest N=50 isotone for which spectroscopic information has been obtained to date. Two sets of advanced shell model calculations reproduce the observed B(E2) systematics. The results for N=50 isotones indicate a good N=50 shell closure and a strong Z=28 proton core polarization. The new results serve as benchmarks to establish theoretical models, predicting the nuclear properties of the doubly magic nucleus 78Ni.

RESUMEN

The 10.15 MeV resonance in 10Be has been probed via resonant 6He+4He elastic scattering. It is demonstrated that it is the Jpi=4+ member of a rotational band built on the 6.18 MeV 0+ state. A Gammaalpha of 0.10-0.13 MeV and Gammaalpha/Gamma=0.35-0.46 were deduced. The corresponding reduced alpha width, gamma2alpha, indicates one of the largest alpha-cluster spectroscopic factors known. The deformation of the band, including the 7.54 MeV, 2+ member, is large (h2/2I=200 keV). Such a deformation and the significant degree of clusterization signals a well-developed alpha:2n:alpha molecular structure.

RESUMEN

Quantum tunnelling through a potential barrier (such as occurs in nuclear fusion) is very sensitive to the detailed structure of the system and its intrinsic degrees of freedom. A strong increase of the fusion probability has been observed for heavy deformed nuclei. In light exotic nuclei such as 6He, 11Li and 11Be (termed 'halo' nuclei), the neutron matter extends much further than the usual nuclear interaction scale. However, understanding the effect of the neutron halo on fusion has been controversial--it could induce a large enhancement of fusion, but alternatively the weak binding energy of the nuclei could inhibit the process. Other reaction channels known as direct processes (usually negligible for ordinary nuclei) are also important: for example, a fragment of the halo nucleus could transfer to the target nucleus through a diminished potential barrier. Here we study the reactions of the halo nucleus 6He with a 238U target, at energies near the fusion barrier. Most of these reactions lead to fission of the system, which we use as an experimental signature to identify the contribution of the fusion and transfer channels to the total cross-section. At energies below the fusion barrier, we find no evidence for a substantial enhancement of fusion. Rather, the (large) fission yield is due to a two-neutron transfer reaction, with other direct processes possibly also involved.

RESUMEN

The 5H system was produced in the 3H(t,p)5H reaction studied with a 58 MeV tritium beam at small c.m. angles. High statistics data were used to reconstruct the energy and angular correlations between the 5H decay fragments. A broad structure in the 5H missing mass spectrum showing up above 2.5 MeV was identified as a mixture of the 3/2+ and 5/2+ states. The data also present evidence that the 1/2+ ground state of 5H is located at about 2 MeV.

The fusion-fission cross sections of the 4He+238U and 6He+238U systems have been measured, at Louvain-la-Neuve, for energies around and below the Coulomb barrier, using an array of Si detectors surrounding a UF4 target. The data taken with 4He are in good agreement with previous data and with the coupled channel fusion calculation performed with ECIS. The 6He data show a regular trend with a large enhancement below the barrier which is attributed to the halo structure of the 6He nucleus.

We examined the mechanisms of interaction of crocidolite asbestos fibers with the epidermal growth factor (EGF) receptor (EGFR) and the role of the EGFR-extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) signaling pathway in early-response protooncogene (c-fos/c-jun) expression and apoptosis induced by asbestos in rat pleural mesothelial (RPM) cells. Asbestos fibers, but not the nonfibrous analog riebeckite, abolished binding of EGF to the EGFR. This was not due to a direct interaction of fibers with ligand, inasmuch as binding studies using fibers and EGF in the absence of membranes showed that EGF did not adsorb to the surface of asbestos fibers. Exposure of RPM cells to asbestos caused a greater than twofold increase in steady-state message and protein levels of EGFR (P < 0.05). The tyrphostin AG-1478, which inhibits the tyrosine kinase activity of the EGFR, but not the tyrphostin A-10, which does not affect EGFR activity, significantly ameliorated asbestos-induced increases in mRNA levels of c-fos but not of c-jun. Pretreatment of RPM cells with AG-1478 significantly reduced apoptosis in cells exposed to asbestos. Our findings suggest that asbestos-induced binding to EGFR initiates signaling pathways responsible for increased expression of the protooncogene c-fos and the development of apoptosis. The ability to block asbestos-induced elevations in c-fos mRNA levels and apoptosis by small-molecule inhibitors of EGFR phosphorylation may have therapeutic implications in asbestos-related diseases.

RESUMEN

Revascularization cures or attenuates the clinical manifestations of renal artery stenosis (hypertension, ischemic nephropathy, pulmonary edema, angina, and congestive heart failure). Traditional approaches have been sub-optimal due to low rates of success and long-term patency after angioplasty, and to relatively high rates of perioperative morbidity and mortality. Endovascular stent placement is an alternative interventional method for renal artery revascularization. Technical success rates are excellent, and the impact on clinical outcomes (blood pressure, renal function, and cardiac complications) is promising.
